Do Hue bulbs mesh with other zigbee devices if I use my own coordinator instead of the Hub? Posted: 01 Oct 2020 05:44 PM PDT The best answer I've been able to find so far is that Hue bulbs paired to the Hub don't mesh with other devices not on the Hub's network, but what if I pair the bulbs to my own existing zigbee network? Recommend a zigbee or other DC relay out of the box to trigger 2 low voltage DC switches please? Posted: 01 Oct 2020 08:10 PM PDT Hi there, I am reasonably well experienced at this but this is something I can't quite seem to find. I expect its staring me in the face but I need the above to control an existing roller shutter. It's got separate up and down DC switches that then in turn control an AC motor through some kind of circuitry. I want a simple solution to trigger the switches. That can be one relay or two, I don't mind. Thank you for any help [link] [comments]
Smart switch for ceiling fan with integrated LED? Posted: 01 Oct 2020 07:20 PM PDT I found the perfect ceiling fan for aesthetics, and originally my plan was to control the light with a smart switch and the fan with a, well, fan switch. When installing the fan, unfortunately there's only a single circuit as opposed to independent circuits for the fan and light. They're both controlled with a remote and the light seems to have its own independent toggle that doesn't use switch. I think I'm looking for a wall switch that's something like a Bond/Harmony device but can act as a control for the fan and light. Doesn't matter if they're the same or separate switches, I have 3 gangs I can use. However since I don't have a dedicated circuit for each function, it needs to learn the fan and the light independently. Does this exist? [link] [comments]

Z wave bridge to HomeKit or Alexa? Posted: 01 Oct 2020 05:14 PM PDT Sorry if this gets asked a lot— I did try to search but I didn't see anything recent. I was wondering if there's a good solution to update Z wave systems to work with Alexa and HomeKit There's a product called the Skaro automation bridge but it appears to be based out of Australia and not widely sold here in the US. https://automationbridge.com.au I'm going to help a friend whose mountain cabin was set up by a Z wave whiz a few years ago but I don't think it's working well anymore. I'm going to try to apply my IT skills getting things working and I thought it might be helpful if someone had finally created a device to make it compatible with these modern automation systems. I'm aware there's this thing called homebridge but I took a look at it a year or two ago and at the time it seemed extremely complicated and limited. Thanks! [link] [comments]

Can Honeywell evohome function alongside a stove with a backboiler? Posted: 01 Oct 2020 11:59 AM PDT A bit of background first. I have a 3 bed semi detached house, it has a stove, said stove is 14kw and has a back boiler (yes it's a monster for the size of the house). During the summer this year I installed an evohome system replacing 6 out of 8 rads with smart thermostats. Has been brilliant up to this point keeping the house at a nice steady temperature etc... In the last few days it's getting quite cold at night and this evening we decided to light a fire and as per usual once a reasonable temperature was reached the pump kicked in and started circulating the hot water to the reservoir but unlike it usually does it did not warm up any of the radiators since the set temperature in Honeywell was already reached. My main concern is that the backboiler will only be heating the reservoir and none of the rads and not sure if that is going to cause any issues, the backboiler is usually capable of heating all 8 rads in the house to a point where you can not touch them without burning yourself. Anyway just wondering if there is an override I can set in Honeywell and maybe for later an automated trigger to open all the rads but keep the Gaz off if the fire is going. Any ideas considered.... EDIT: After carefull consideration the decision was made to leave the hall radiators on the old style Thermostats fully open, being the colder area of the house, this means that if any other room triggers the heating it will also heat the hall and if we have a fire lit there is an outlet for the heat. Posted: 01 Oct 2020 11:24 AM PDT Is there any smart remotes that are similar to the insteon remote https://www.smarthome.com/products/insteon-2342-222-mini-remote-8-scene that work with Z-wave or Lutron Caseta switches? [link] [comments]

Just starting out: Question on SmartThings and cloud vs local Posted: 01 Oct 2020 09:00 AM PDT Hello all: I'm just starting down the path of home automation. Our needs (wants) are very light right now, so I'm most likely going to dip my toe in the water with SmartThings. I understand it is somewhat limited compared to more robust solutions like HomeAssistant/Hubitat, but is seems to be a good learning platform. One major concern I have is that all processing is done remotely in the cloud, which I understand can add latency between keypress and resultant action. A few hundred MS is fine. Several seconds....gives me pause. Plus an Internet outage in my area could bring things to a screaching halt. However, I came across this support article: https://support.smartthings.com/hc/en-us/articles/209979766-Local-processing#What Which suggests that some automation can be processed locally. Is this local automation only in the event the internet connection is lost or is it always local (when certain conditions are met)? If certain rules work locally always - I'd think that may eliminate some of the reported delay. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Dedicated machine for Tasker etc instead of my phone Posted: 01 Oct 2020 05:07 AM PDT I've recently started getting into doing more things with my google home than just switching on and off smart plugs and have been running into some issues with consistency which I assume is due to how background apps work on android. I have recently set up a wake on lan action with tasker and join and this consistently doesn't work unless I make sure my phone has recently been accessed and is not in low battery mode. It feels silly to me to keep building automations if sometimes they won't work as that somewhat defeats the point. I was wondering if there is an easy solution for using say a raspberry pi and having these same applications always running at my home. I wish this sort of thing could just be built directly into the google home but obviously that isn't there yet. I have attempted to find something like this online but wasn't really getting what I was looking for. Any pointers would be great. [link] [comments]
What RGB led strip controller its more universal and easy to use? Posted: 01 Oct 2020 04:50 AM PDT Hi, dont know its this is the best place to ask, i see some similar topics. Im making some lamps designs to 3D printing. Until now all my lamps use normal Bulbs (some people bought smarts lamps like xiaomis and use it inside), but now i have some designs thats need to use led strips (normal ). Im looking to use a wifi-controller so can be used with alexa/google/smartphones. But im lost, A LOTS of differents models, TUYA, Magic Home, alternatives firmwares, a lot of different brands.... I will be using normal 12v/24v rgb strips, small lenghts (1-2m), i need a solid product than can be durable and easy to use. In local shops they only have really BIG and expensive controllers to control. [link] [comments]
Questions On Arduino For Custom IoT Devices Posted: 01 Oct 2020 08:26 AM PDT I was messing around with an Arduino starter kit that I have, and I managed to build something that would be really useful in my house. In this case, it's a water level sensor for a holding tank I have. I won't get into the details of how it works, or why, but I'm really new to this. I'm curious about what methods people are using to report or act on the information from their Arduino projects. I see that there are z-wave and wi-fi modules you can get, but don't know much about them. Just curious about what everyone else is doing! In this case, I won't have a computer nearby that I can plug the board into via USB. At home, I currently use a smartthings hub for managing my z-wave devices. I may switch to Home Assistant in the future, but I'm not in any hurry to do so. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 Oct 2020 04:18 AM PDT I want to use these RGBIC LED strips in 2 different locations for Halloween lights. I need 16 ft in 2 different locations. The length of strip is perfect, but I only have one power supply/ remote per purchase. Is there a place I can purchase a separate Govee remote and power supply? Or would it be cheaper to buy a 9.8ft LED strip and just use the power cord and remote from that with my 33.8 pack I bought? [link] [comments]
August Connect not good for Multifamily Posted: 01 Oct 2020 07:14 AM PDT Not sure if anyone else has run into this issue. I purchased the Yale Assure Lock with the August Connect Wifi Module and installed it on my building, which is a multifamily. We previously had The Yale x Nest lock. Design-wise the two are very similar, but with the increasing Google-ization of Nest, the Yale x Nest lock began losing functionality. For example I can't sign up new users to the Home without converting everything to Google accounts. After carefully reviewing the documentation on the August website, the box, etc. I decided to go with the August Connect module and the Yale Assure Lock as it seemed to have all of the same features as the Nest Lock. I got everyone in the building signed-up with August Connect and everything seemed great, until I started getting messages that users couldn't connect to the lock. I investigated and it seems that only OWNERS can connect to the lock via wifi. Guests can only use codes or Bluetooth. This is a problem as the other people in the building need to be able to open the door remotely to let in FedEx, UPS, etc. so they can securely leave packages in the vestibule. Nowhere on the August website does it say that Guests can ONLY use Bluetooth. I've tried reaching out to August Support, but they are... abysmal. Unfortunately I can't just set everyone up as Owners as the device shows the names and phone numbers of all of the users, which I consider to be personal information and wouldn't be comfortable sharing between users. Additionally, Owners can add and delete users, which is not a privilege that they should be granted. I simply want them to be able to unlock the door via Wifi. TL;DR: August Connect doesn't let Guests unlock doors over Wifi -bluetooth only and NOWHERE IN tHE DOCUMENTATION IS THIS STATED. If anyone has any ideas for how to get around this, I'm all ears! Thanks! [link] [comments]
Help? Philips Wiz lights remote only controls one light in the room when it should control all(?) Posted: 01 Oct 2020 04:25 AM PDT Just got some new Philips Wiz 60w color selectable dimmable smart bulbs and have been using them with the Wiz app and that works great. I added a remote to the set this morning and the remote says it should control the whole room but it will only do one light right now. I've tried grouping and ungrouping the lights and nothing works - still just one light being controlled. Help? Edit: and now, after adding the remote, one of the lights wont pair at all! (???) Problem pairing Tradfi lights with ConbeeII Posted: 01 Oct 2020 04:15 AM PDT Hi everyone, First post here, I started my setup 3 days ago, slowly ramping up :) So my current setup is very basic: a Pi 4 running Home Assistant, and a conbeII that I just received this morning. I've got a few switches from Ikea (2 remotes and one on/off switch) and 2 movement sensors, all perfectly paired with the ConBeeII. I have 3 Tradfi lights, one of them I had for a while so is already paired to one of the remotes. Nobe of the lights are found by the ConBee. I've tried turning on/off plenty of times, it's not doing anything. Any hints on what I'm missing ? Thanks ! [link] [comments] |
