Is a cheap robot vacuum worth it? Posted: 13 Oct 2020 10:43 AM PDT I'm sorry, I know I see a lot of these posts, but most of them are out of my price range at the moment and I haven't seen many looking for a decent budget robot vacuum. My house is only about 1500 sq ft, hardwood with a rug in one room and carpet in the 3 bedrooms. I have a Husky, so decent amount of dog hair. Is there any sub-$300 one that will do me justice or is it not even worth it? I'm trying to keep up with my manual vacuuming, but it would be nice to have a robot to go more frequently. Any advice is much appreciated. I'm checking out the ones on Prime today too as there are decent discounts, just really unsure of what's a decent one to look at. Thanks! EDIT: Thanks for all the advice everyone. I ended up ordering the Roborock S4 on Prime Day for $284. I figure if I end up not liking it, the cheap N79S is not a Prime Day special so I can always return for the cheaper if this one doesn't seem to do the job I need. [link] [comments]
Posted: 13 Oct 2020 05:03 PM PDT I love the the Reddit HA community. Everyday I see something clever, unique, cool or something I wish I had in my home. That being the case, I'm thinking that maybe some of y'all here may have encountered the same issue I have and maybe came up with a solution that works. I've got a chrome cast, a number of HDMI adapters and more and more things in my entertainment center that require USB for power. Fitting all the USB wall warts on my surge protectors alongside the other assorted wall warts is hard! As best I can tell, I need 4 USB ports. Each port must be able to deliver 1 amp/5 watts or more. Any less and things get wonky. I would also need 8 AC outlets on the unit if it's a AC power or surge strip with USB ports built in. I've had a hard time searching through the many possible power strips and USB charging hubs on Amazon. A lot of the ones I find simply don't have at least one amp for each outlet. I tried a no-name 4 port USB charging hub that was supposed to deliver 1 amp per port at minimum but it didn't work. Soooo... do any of y'all know of any:

Do Roborock vacuums need constant wifi connection to work properly? Posted: 13 Oct 2020 06:23 AM PDT Last year we got the Roborock S4 and we absolutely love it. Every time my mom has visited she comments on it. My brothers and myself are planning on splitting the cost of a Roborock S4 for her for Christmas. They're currently $284.90 for Amazon Prime Day, but I do have 1 question. At my parents house, their wifi router is in one corner of the house. It has good coverage in the office and living room, but the opposite corner of the house has no wifi coverage at all. Will it still build a map of these areas? How well will this work? I understand that if the Roborock is out of wifi range, you wouldn't be able to see it's location or control it with the app; that's obvious. [link] [comments]

Posted: 13 Oct 2020 06:47 AM PDT Building a new home that will be about 5000 square feet (3 stories, standard wood frame construction) and I think the Caseta product line will be the best option. Since this is new construction, I'll have neutral wires at all switch locations. Should I use the more expensive Caseta switch that requires the neutral wiring (PD-5BE)? Is there any advantage to doing this for standard LED recessed lighting and other normal light fixtures? Obviously the price is about double over the PD-6WCL - but if it provides for more reliability or more fixture compatibility it may be worth it. I also understand that I could hit the distance limit or max out at 75 devices pretty quick, so anticipating needing one Hub per floor, but maybe with a dimmer extended it'll hit all the switches with just a single hub. I know I can't link more than one hub with Smartthings but can I link more than one hub with Alexa? I'd rather not spend the extra money for the RA2 system. Is there another system I should be considering? Thank you. [link] [comments]
Posted: 13 Oct 2020 12:40 PM PDT My family's CPK-17 is dying and it's a workhorse, but I'd love something that I can automate with an iDevices outlet. The above are requirements, as is boil-dry protection. Ideally it's decent looking, too, since it'll be sitting out all the time. Suggestions? [link] [comments]
Posted: 13 Oct 2020 10:33 PM PDT I would like to play music (Pandora, Spotify etc) from my Echo Dot ("Alexa, play X Station") in my back yard. -I would like to have 4 speakers in two "zones" (so I could play on speaker 1+2, or 3+4, or all 4). -I want these hard mounted high on a wall. So wired is expected. I can find outdoor speakers just fine... just don't know what I need "in between" the speakers and the Echo?? Recommendations please! :) [link] [comments]
Anyone have suggestions on how to turn bathwater into a humidifier / cooler? Posted: 13 Oct 2020 10:31 PM PDT I live in a condo that gets roasted when the sun is out and the air here is also super dry. I do have cold running water (utilities included) that I was thinking to potentially use as a source of cooling. Anyone have any suggestions on atomizing the water for humidity / cooling, or other practical solutions without taking up too much real estate? I know that I can get a humidifier etc but the idea is to keep enough source water such that I don't have to refill twice a day. P.S. I already have inflow / outflow duct fans set up where practical already. [link] [comments]

Wyze + IFTTT/Alexa/Google = Ring Protect Alarm? Posted: 13 Oct 2020 06:21 PM PDT OK smarthome nerds, I've got a quandary for you. Is there a way to have IFTTT, Alexa, or Google Assistant trip the alarm on Ring home security? Here's the use-case -- I like Rings home protect that I could use month-to-month if I ever travel. But Ring's window/door sensors are $20 while Wyze's are $5. Wyze doesn't use ZWave (even though they transmit in a similar range) so they're not compatible with Ring. But they do integrate nicely with IFTTT, Alexa, and Google Assistant. Sooo... if I could come up with a recipe in IFTTT/Alexa/Google to trip the Ring Alarm when a sensor a Wyze sensor is activated, I could incorporate Wyze into my home security system and have Ring monitor it whenever I need it. I primarily have the Alexa and Ring ecosystem at home so that's my preference. Ring's website and IFTTT PR stuff doesn't talk about it and I'm digging through the interwebs but you people are way smarter than me so I figured this was a good place to ask. :) [link] [comments]
Posted: 13 Oct 2020 05:51 PM PDT I'm trying to figure out a way to accomplish two things, now that IFTTT is apparently not free anymore and I can't create applets.

Z-wave temperature sensors that work in sub-zero temperatures? Posted: 13 Oct 2020 01:56 PM PDT In my case, I'm talking about sub-zero degrees Fahrenheit. Are there any out there? I'm willing to consider a roll-your-own solution. [link] [comments]

Posted: 13 Oct 2020 08:45 AM PDT Has any flashed the Laview halo one video doorbell with a different firmware? My mom purchased one a few months back of a person on Kijiji. The person never removed the unit from their account and by the time I got around to installing the doorbell the ad wasong removed so we have no way of logging into the doorbell itself. Laview has been useless in removing the account from the doorbell citing they are having software issues on their end. [link] [comments]
Wireless speaker I can send wav/mp3 to in response to HA events? Posted: 13 Oct 2020 06:45 PM PDT I'd like to have a speaker in the living room, that would for example, get an audio clip sent to it if something happens in the back of the house. Likewise, I'd like something in the back of the house that can respond to events in the front, like someone opening a door or window. I had thought maybe I could send something to something like a Nest Mini, but I really don't want little listening devices all over the house. Just personal preference. I know there are a lot of speakers out there, but I'm assuming that not all of them have support in HA. [link] [comments]
Looking to Remotely Control Home Automation Posted: 13 Oct 2020 06:31 PM PDT So I'm totally new to home automation, but am really eager to learn as much as possible about ways to automate my home. The first thing I'd like to do is help my dad who has some mobility, but unfortunately we live a bit too far away for me to be able to get out to help him with the automation as often as he might need me to. Let's say we set up a bed time routine, is there any way using any controls that would allow me to change the routine for him without physically being on location? Hope that makes sense. Posted: 13 Oct 2020 02:20 PM PDT To replace on my front porch. Want to create a SmartThings automation. This is the bulb, and inside the light fixture it says don't use anything more than a B series light, 60w. Current light bulb From what I've found, that's a CA series bulb. Can't figure out if it's CA5, CA7, CA8, CA10, or CA11. Hoping someone here can lead me in the right direction. [link] [comments]
Smart locks: Yale Assure vs Nest x Yale Posted: 13 Oct 2020 05:00 PM PDT I'm moving into a new home soon and looking for some advice when it comes to smart lock selection. My current home: Connected through Google Home / Assistant and Smartthings. Most devices are wifi. New home: I'll bring my current setup over, and add the Nest thermostat that is already installed. Locks I'm considering Questions
Any advice or experience with these locks would be much appreciated! Thank you! [link] [comments]
Posted: 13 Oct 2020 04:53 PM PDT I might be beating a dead pony, as I've read quite a bit about this topic here. However, I can't seem to find a solid option for landscape lights that I can pair with a Hue Hub. I really love Gledopto.. their garden spotlight model 9205 would be perfect, but I don't have receptacles at every location where I'd need them and they ship with standard power cables. The Hue Lily lights are offensively expensive but the wiring is great. In-line transformer, daisy chainable with fairly long stock cables, etc. Ideally I would just direct bury wire back to an outlet which I could do with those. Gledopto makes a "garden lamp" model 9201... but I can't find that anywhere nor can I find specs. Anyhow.. just throwing it out there. Any suggestions welcome. I guess I could do something not tied to Hue Hub, but I already have that, plus some Wemo light switches, and some Ring gear. So I really didn't want a third controller/vendor in the mix. Question about Samsung sensor for garage Posted: 13 Oct 2020 12:35 PM PDT I have a Samsung multipurpose sensor and a smart things hub. I put this on my garage. It works great but I realized in setting there is a garage mode that allows the sensor to function as an axis (when the device goes fully horizontal that's when it knows it's open). My only question is does one or the other affect battery life. Is either more desirable? Thanks!! [link] [comments] |
