Help me know when my wife needs me Posted: 01 Nov 2020 07:14 PM PST This is my first time here so forgive me if I don't know all the subreddit rules. Here's the situation: I have a mancave in the basement and I'm a gamer that's wearing loud headphones most of the time. It frustrates my wife that I can't hear her and I'm normally startled or unaware of her presence. I want a bat signal. A literal bat signal, that she can either activate via google voice or a motion sensor when she's headed down to my room. With so many different options for home automation this has to be possible right? Help me out. [link] [comments]
Roborock infiltrated by little yellow mites or something? How to get rid of them? Posted: 01 Nov 2020 04:41 PM PST So I have a roborock S6 and recently discovered a lot of these yellow small mites on it, in it, under the lid, but not underneath the machine where all the wheels and stuff are. The roborock was placed next to a bag of grain rice so I assume the mites came from there? Though I thought rice mites were black or something. No idea how they got in the house either. So we wiped it, sprayed some bug spray over it, took it out to the garden to let it sit for about a week, while checking up on it every couple days to wipe it and spray every nook I can with a can of compressed air and every time I keep finding them. Last time I only found a couple and this time I only saw one inside so they have been decreasing, but Im reluctant to bring it back into the house as Im scared having it move over the house will just spread the little mites everywhere. Where tf are they hiding in and how can I clean it out? Or is the machine just fucked and I have to throw it out? :/ also emptied and removed the dust bin as well [link] [comments]
Tasmota compatible controller for individually addressable RGB LEDs? Anything outside of an ESP-01? Posted: 01 Nov 2020 04:45 PM PST I wanted to throw together a Tasmota compatible controller for individually addressable RGB LEDs like the ws2811, ws8212b, or etc. I made one out of an ESP-01 and a cheap add-on board from ali-express (example) and it works great but it's a little clunky/prone to accidental failure. Tasmota compatibility is a little bit of a misnomer as what I really want to MQTT so that I can setup commands for individual pixels in Node-Red. I'm hoping that there's something in existence like THIS that's a small, clean, water-proof-ish, and durable housing. Any ideas r/homeautomation ? [link] [comments]

HELP requested - Caseta Switches flashing and resetting Posted: 01 Nov 2020 04:04 PM PST I installed the following caseta hardware in my home: - 7 PD-5NE ELV+ dimmers- 2 PD-6ANS switches I am experiencing some issues: "Flashing" - Approximately once every 30 seconds or so, when a 5NE dimmer is in a dimmed position, the light will "flash" up to its full brightness for a fraction of a second. Almost like a voltage surge or something. When at full brightness, I don't notice anything "Resetting" - Once every 10 - 15 minutes or so, when a 5NE dimmer is in a dimmed position, the light will turn off completely and then return to the dimmed state that it was in before it "reset." When at full brightness, I don't experience any issues. I experience these issues in all zones but are most pronounced in ELV zones and I have only seen the "reset" in ELV zones. About the loads: - In all zones, incandescent or halogen bulbs are being used- 2 zones (bathrooms) contain MLV transformers so forward dimming is being used- 4 zones contain ELV transformers so trailing dimming is being used- 1 zone is incandescents with no transformer so I have tried using both forward and trailing but mainly leave it on forward Wiring: - Neutral wiring throughout my home so neutrals are connected for all dimmers and switches- LED strip load on one of the switches so a LUT-MLC is being used to prevent flashing I've tried changing bulbs and isolating switches from the system but I haven't found anything that has had an effect. Tried speaking to Lutron support but the tech that I spoke to didn't have any good ideas but are sending out some MLCs and a Maestro to try. I also emailed Lutron support and the tech thought there could be some neutral wire noise but I don't know how to fix that. Any ideas? [link] [comments]
Require Help with GE In Wall Smart Dimmer #14294 Posted: 01 Nov 2020 10:53 PM PST The room that connects my house to the garage has a GE In Wall Smart Dimmer model number 14294. It recently has stopped working with the SmartThings 2015 Hub. The Hub is located in the basement, in the corner closest to the basement door, and the light switch is not more than 15 feet away. It was working fine for years on end before, however now it has stopped turning on the lights. I am also unable to turn the lights on from the ceiling fan with the light bulbs. When I try to run a Z-Wave Repair on the SmartThings app, it says that "Z-Wave failed to update route." Any help would be appreciated, I've been losing my mind over this for the past few days because the lights in this room do not work. [link] [comments]
Outdoor Lights with Integrated Camera Posted: 01 Nov 2020 03:14 PM PST I'm considering changing our the outdoor fixtures on my house and wondering if anybody has experience with any fixtures with integrated cameras. I have been using Amcrest cameras on my window sills for surveillance and don't like the idea of the monthly fees for Ring. I'm sure they are easy to use but seems like another expense. Best daylight bulbs that work with Google Home and don't require a hub? Posted: 01 Nov 2020 03:36 PM PST I want to get daylight bulbs that will work with google home/google assistant. Most ones I see are soft white and the daylight ones I do find require a hub. I'm fine with tunable ones also. [link] [comments]
Replacing cabinet florescent lights with led strips. Posted: 01 Nov 2020 06:39 AM PST Hi everyone, Been lurking this group trying to figure out how I should automate a few things in my house. I definitely will be using HA with zwave and zigbee usb stick. I think one of my first projects will be replacing the under cabinet kitchen lights with strip led lights. I think the ballasts are wired to a light switch in series. Not sure if I can change these to outlets and get some sort of smart led module that can control the color and led strips for dimming? Not sure if anyone has done this and what components are required. I'm thinking I would need to put outlets at each section where wiring for ballasts existed and transformers connected to each outlet? [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 Nov 2020 08:49 PM PST Installed in a few of my rooms are recessed RGBW LED downlights. They all have integrated LED drivers, and are wired straight into the mains power. At the moment, the only option we have to control them is via an app (Smartlife) / google assistant / alexa. For some rooms that's totally fine, but in many cases it's beyond annoying (e.g., if you get up in the night to go to the bathroom you have to pull out your phone to dim the lights). We've tried to get around this by automating their dimming based on a schedule, but invariably that doesn't work because people turn them off at the wall switch (which is just a manual switch) when they leave the room and so cut the power to them. Is anyone aware of a wall panel / switch that you can use almost as a wifi remote? (E.g. you push the 'on' button and it actually triggers an IFTTT command that turns the light on / off; or a dim button that triggers a command dimming the lights). All the panels I can find seem to either require direct drive of the lights (which we don't have), or act as 2.4g RF remotes (which wouldn't work with these lights). Other suggestions greatly appreciated! [link] [comments]
The basics: what's the right backbone to lay the lights onto? Posted: 01 Nov 2020 07:57 PM PST I am a neophyte to home automation (I had a Dropcam and I stuck with it as it turned into Nest the Google Home). I liked Dropcam. It was basic. I need basic. I now have a house with a Nest thermostat. It wasn't the plan, but it came with the house. Now this is an old enough house. So I've been experimenting with turning on the detached garage outside light with a smart bulb, so I can actually do it without going outside or running wire. It works just fine. (Wyze bulb, btw; I also experimented with Yeelight, just to compare, and I hate the app and setup, so I'm done with them). I'm going to want to have multiple colored light bulbs and strips in the back deck (which will be built), and some bulbs in the garage for great light, and some few bulbs inside the house so I can effectively have night lights, which are red in the evening; also so I can have some nice warm yellows to wake up to. I'm going to want to control them in groups. My big question is this: what backbone do I need? That is, what open or closed compatible stuff do I need? There are so many names and acronyms. I want to be able to control everything from a smartphone. I can access everything now from Google Home, but I'm not sure I want to stick with it. I'll also want some serious external cameras (I was looking at the Arlo Ultras). I'd like to add smart outlets at some point. Dimmers on a wall? I don't want hubs. I don't want to use Alexa or Google Assistant (just an app). I don't want to install a Raspberri Pi. I'd prefer not using a mesh system... the wifi seems fine. I don't want to learn another technology, I rather want to use a system. So, what should I make sure things are compatible with so I can use them for max flexibility as I buy new stuff over the next couple of years? I'm having serious fear of making the wrong decision now, and sinking some money in then wishing I'd done something else. Can you advise me on how to proceed down this path? [link] [comments]

DIY Motion Sensor Paired w/ Colored Light Posted: 01 Nov 2020 07:07 PM PST I'm looking for a solution to signal when someone gets close to my home office. The room is a weird setup and best spot for my desk is facing away from the door. I like to put on my noise cancelling headphones while I'm working to focus, but also don't like when my wife or kid sneaks up behind me with a question or request. I'd like to put a motion sensor outside my door and have it turn on a light above my desk to give me some warning that someone is behind me. Any creative ideas to pull this off? Do I need to rely on IFTTT? [link] [comments]
I'm having trouble connecting the Yeelight app to my new Smart LED Bulb 1S(color) Posted: 01 Nov 2020 10:21 AM PST I bought this nifty bulb b/c WireCutter recommended it, so I thought I'd play around with it and see. So I go through the setup with the Yeelight app, but as soon as I connect to the Yeelight-specific wifi (for setup) there is an Apple iOs setup screen (from Apple Home) that pops up. Initially I didn't want to add it, but fine, I finally did. The Apple Home app then instructs me to add the bulb with the QR code. Done. I can now turn it on and off with the Apple App. But I still cannot connect to it with the Yeelight App, which I presume is the only way to change the color and intensity (I installed a WyzeBulb, yesterday, and their separate app lets me tune the white color and intensity). So, what am I doing wrong? The Yeelight App requires that I choose the proper device first (you'd think it could just scan), so I try a few (the names are not that specific) and only can get by one of the setup screens if I choose the LED bulb that has a '1S' in it. I do. Great. I am 100% sure I typed in my WIFI network PW correctly, but when it goes to the nest Yeelight APP setup screen, to scan the area for products to add, it simply does not find it. Ever. I've repeated in different combos of resetting, etc. All combos as far as I can tell. What am I missing? I'm flabbergasted that this setup is so unfriendly for users. EDIT: The answer is disable the 5 ghz wifi. For setup anyhow. [link] [comments]
Local home automation, where to start Posted: 01 Nov 2020 06:43 PM PST I don't want to use any kind of Raspberry Pi & a monitor as I don't have any room for that stuff? I was thinking of going with Hubitat, for someone who has only used GH & Alexa routines, I have an echo dot & nest home mini & plan on getting more nest stuff in the future, I use an iPhone & have an Apple TV 4K & IPad, would Hubitat work well? Looking for outdoor, preferably Z-wave/Zigbee water shut off valve Posted: 01 Nov 2020 12:34 PM PST Maybe I'm not looking hard enough but I've been looking for an outdoor Z-wave/Zigbee (don't really like to use wifi products) water valve for my different water mains. This is the scenario I need it for: Where I live, we have a secondary water mains valve that is closer to our house as the one that is metered is a bit too far. However, due to droughts, we do not have a consistent water supply throughout the year. Because of that, we would usually turn off the secondary water mains valve and go to the other side of the house and turn on our valve for our cistern to supply the house with water. I was looking to automate this process to make life a bit easier (and vice versa when we decide to switch back to the mains supply again). I would also prefer to be able to turn the valve by hand just in case one of my parents or I am already outside near to the valves. I saw the shut-off valve by Dome but I see on their amazon product page that it isn't rated for outdoors since both valves are out in the open. For a little extra info:
Edit: Located in the Caribbean so you can expect pretty serious storms and that's about it. Max temps will be mid 90F but average 85F and lowest is probably 75F so temp resistance need not be a big priority. Basically, I just need ideas! lolI'm also open to anyone saying this is a horrible idea and just stick to the manual way of things (but where's the fun in that, right? Lol). [link] [comments]

Seeking reccomendation: Inline Zigbee switch, with dimmer? Posted: 01 Nov 2020 01:48 PM PST Seeking a simple "inline" zigbee switch, exactly like this: https://sonoff.tech/product/zigbee-diy-smart-switches/basiczbr3 Except with dimming functionality also. Posted: 01 Nov 2020 12:07 PM PST Hi there, Newcomer to this sub, the content here looks great, can't believe I've been missing out on this community for this long. Has anyone used the Emporia Vue Gen 2? I've been looking around for cheap solutions that give me the power to monitor my two breaker panels, and each of the circuits within those panels, and the Emporia seems like the best thing out there for the price (someone correct me if there's better solutions out there!). I'm curious what the experience using it has been like, and how easy it's been to integrate with other home automation tools (Home Assistant for instance). [link] [comments]
Setting up Hue lights with August lock after sunset Posted: 01 Nov 2020 12:01 PM PST What I am trying to set up is getting the hue lights I have outdoors to come on for 15 minutes or so any time the front door is unlocked. I only want this to happen after dark and before sunrise. I am currently set up using Google home with Phillips hue and the August lock. [link] [comments]
