replacing old GE switches, what is the best z-wave switch right now?

    Posted: 25 Dec 2020 10:46 PM PST

so, i've got 4 old ge zwave switches in my house...one of them just died (or seems to have anyway) with the blinking blue light issue. after some research, seems likely that the other three are probably going to die the same way at some point...luckily for me they've all lasted way longer than two years (the oldest is actually going on almost 7 years), but i'm still thinking i should probably look at replacing them soon (along with adding some more switches as well).

what's the preferred brand of switch now? i've been looking at zooz (although i hate the stupid logo on the paddle) and inovelli (although they seem to be OOS at amazon at the moment)...are there others that i should be looking at?

What are your favorite dimmers that can go in shallower electric wall boxes?

    Posted: 25 Dec 2020 07:51 PM PST

    Just starting. HA/Rpi/Z-Wave.

I've got 2 7/8" deep and 1 3/4" deep. And, luckily some 3 3/4" deep. These rule out some of the cooler HomeSeer dimmers and Inovelli Red dimmers.

What are your favorite low-profile dimmers?

Is Custom command/scripting for Wifi remote possible?

    Posted: 25 Dec 2020 04:57 PM PST

    Sup HA fam,

I'm new to HA have a few devices (plugs, lifghts, sunoff mini) now with a super simple setup using the SmartLife app.

Recenetly added was the Wifi IR remote controller to use my smart phone to control any device that has an IR receiver.

I'd like to send a sequence of commands to open up specific apps or even type since I can't use siri if I'm not on my home network.

Example: Press home button, up button, up button, left, up.

This sequence would open up Youtube, go into a playlist I have, and select my first playlist based on my home screen icon arrangement. Not sure if this makes sense.

Its not ideal since it's "hard programming" but it's the only way I can think to do what I need without reinventing the wheel.

Twinkly lights gen 1 don’t work this year

    Posted: 25 Dec 2020 02:10 AM PST

I have gen 1 and gen 2 strings. The gen 2 work perfectly but the gen 1 refuse to stay connected to Wi-Fi this year. I am guessing an update has messed these up. Not happy I can no longer use them :-(

Anyone else have this problem with Gen 1?

    Isy 994i

    Posted: 25 Dec 2020 07:11 AM PST

I have a Universal isy994i / zwave and a mix of Insteon, x10, and zwave. Runs reliably and it's integrated with DSC alarm panel. I had mobilelinc for a while, but with it's fairly expensive monthly fee I discontinued it. Is there another way to access my ISY994i remotely through a OIS phone app that doesn't require a monthly subscription fee?

Universal RGB bluetooth light strip app?

    Posted: 25 Dec 2020 03:41 PM PST

Hello! I recently got a Dalattin light strip and the included app it's meant to work with is terrible and most important for me is not compatible with google home. Thankfully it is a general bluetooth device that appears so is there any app out there that is compatible with google home and connects to bluetooth devices? Thanks.

Feit Smart bulbs are in setup until they aren't

    Posted: 25 Dec 2020 08:12 AM PST

Trying to re-setup some Feit bulbs from Lowe's and they are having trouble connecting. I had them connected and working great with Alexa until I hit the light switch. Turned the switch back on a day later, not realizing what I had done, and only one bulb turned on. Frustrated and with no time, I hit the switch and walked away. Today I am attempting to re-add the bulbs and they will not connect. First the app said they needed deleted and put back in. So I removed the bulbs and reset them via the switch. The bulbs blink and blink and blink until its time to go into setup. Once in the app, they go solid and will not connect. Anyone have similar issues?

Switchbot isn't powerful enough to push my switch :(

    Posted: 25 Dec 2020 02:55 PM PST

Not looking for any help, just disappointed. The buttons used for turning on power for ovens require more effort than a regular lightswitch and the switchbot appears to not be powerful enough to do it :(

    My Crestron Home Automation Project

    Posted: 25 Dec 2020 10:12 AM PST

    My Crestron Home Automation Project

A little background, I am a commercial AV integrator by trade and a certified crestron programmer. My last house was based around RTI, but I decided to start fresh with this house when we moved in a couple years ago and decided to go with Crestron to use as a test bench. The goal with this project was to build something that was extremely reliable for the family to use and on a budget. Most of the equipment for this project was purchased second hand from local dealers or ebay.

There is still a bit of touch up work to get done as you can see by the photos, but it has been a fun project so here and has met all of our needs. Some details of the system are at the bottom of the post.

    https://preview.redd.it/qgi8ldpzxc761.jpg?width=1283&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ffa5ef62698e7cebce321e39377bc1c1c4181e4c

    Here are some rough specs
    - Video is based on a Crestron DM-MD16x16 with a mix of HD, 4K, 4KZ cards. I prefer this platform as I can mix and match video to match sources and displays as needed. There are currently 9 video sources and 7 video zones.
    - Audio is a QSC QSYS Core100f feeding an RTI CP-16i which feed a variety of Paradigm speakers. A Yamaha AVR feeds a 5.1 for living room and 2.1 for the master. There are 11 audio sources and 13 zones of audio.
    - Lighting and Fans are a Crestron Pyng system with Crestron in-wall dimmers and a 4ch dimmer for Christmas lights. This is a stand alone system with hooks back into the main control system. This will give me the ability to leave the lighting package as a stand alone for the next owner if they want it, or it can all be removed and put back to the it was when we bought it.
    - HVAC is a Crestron T-Stat with 3 remote sensors around the house. An additional 4ch temp sensor is used for external, attic, and rack temps. Whole House fan and garage exhaust fans are also integrated. A Weatherflow weather system has also been integrated.
    - Security is handled from a DSC based security system for door, windows, glass break, and motion sensors. A variety of magnetic sensors for things like garage door and side gate status.
    - Sprinklers are handled via a rachio 16ch sprinkler system. Patio misters are also integrated into a sprinkler circuit so they can be turned on from one of the lighting keypads.
    - Access Control is handled with Kwickset Z-Wave locks for exterior doors via a vera gateway that integrates with the control system. Garage door is handle with contact closures.
    - Voice control is handled via Amazon Alexa. I am not a huge fan of voice control personally, but we use it to run basic scenes and some functions we use all the time.
    - Interfaces are a variety of 10" and 7" touch panels around the house, a 12-button keypad was installed in all the rooms for local control for audio and other misc room controls, and iOS interface that minimills any of the touch panels functionality, and a mix of TSR-302 and HR-310 handheld remotes are used in all the zones with video.

Can't add Magic Home skill to an Alexa routine

    Posted: 25 Dec 2020 04:18 PM PST

Just got some wifi light bulbs that are controlled by the Magic Home Alexa skill. I am able to control them just fine with "Alexa, turn on Normal Lighting" where Normal Lighting is one of the "scenes" I setup in the app.

However, I want a routine that sets the lights to one of my scenes and also plays some music. I can add the music just fine, but when I click Add Action in the routine then go to Skills > Your Skills I get an error page that says "No enabled skills".

When I navigate to More > Skills & Games > Your Skills I see Magic Home enabled.

Why can't I add it to the routine?

    Thanks!

    Wireless light switch advice

    Posted: 25 Dec 2020 08:42 AM PST

The upper level of my home is one large room that currently has no light switches (older 1.5 story home so it's basically a finished attic) and I'd like to add wireless switches instead of wiring for traditional switches. There are 3 ceiling fixtures I want to control with the wireless switches. One fixture is above the stairs and is currently controlled by a wired switch at at the bottom of the stairs, so I'd like to add a switch upstairs. The other two fixtures are centered on each side of the room and are controled by a pull chains so they're not wired for a switch.

Any advice on how to do this and/or product recommendations would be appreciated. I've researched quite a bit and feel like I'm going in circles with possible solutions!

    Edit: I'm in the US.

Sensors that sense walking in + out of room?

    Posted: 25 Dec 2020 03:33 PM PST

I was wondering is it possible via for example some laser sensors to sense if a person is either walking into a room or out of it. Perhaps 2 sensors adjacent to each other with enough distance to understand the direction of the moving object by looking which sensor gets the signal first.

Idea is to activate room lights according to the person walking in or out of it.

Are there some already established ways that people have done this or do you guys have some interesting insights on this plan?

I have lots of experience in software development regarding web apps but none in hardware related stuff but I am looking to improve myself in that field but if there are already working solutions available then I am not going to reinvent the wheel.

    Also merry christmas!!

Question about home automation in my alarm center

    Posted: 25 Dec 2020 06:05 AM PST

I recently hired a guy to install security cameras and a central alarm to my house. When he was about to leave, he said that it was possible to add voice commands to the phone via Google Home to activate and deactivate the alarm. I downloaded the app from Google Home, but I couldn't add the voice commands, I even downloaded the app from the alarm center on Google Home itself, logged in to my account and added the device, but I have no idea how I do it for add voice commands to activate the alarm when I'm leaving the house, for example. I tried to add a command to open the application and after activating the alarm, but I think Google can't do this second option and I would like to know if anyone knows how to do this, I don't know if it is relevant, but the name of the application is TEM Flex Web. Before anyone asks, the guy who came to install the central alarm and cameras was hired by some company, so I don't have his personal contact to ask. Thanks

    Simple wireless switch

    Posted: 25 Dec 2020 06:55 AM PST

Hey all, apologies if this is the wrong sub but any recommendations on a simple wireless switch? I'd like to add a switch to a bathroom to essentially turn a single pole into a three way. I see the Lutron Caseta but was hoping to avoid any kind of hub and I'm also not a big fan of the design. I'm hoping to just stay with a simple on/off paddle switch. Anything out there?

Looking for a solution to connect several light switch panels that sync wirelessly.

    Posted: 25 Dec 2020 11:26 AM PST

Hi, my basement's lights are divided into 3 sections.

    1. entertainment area (1 light switch, 6 LED potlights)
    2. workout area (3 light switches, 18 LED potlights)
    3. kitchen area (4 light switches, 24 LED potlights)

Each section is in a different corner of the basement. I would like to have a panel in each section that has a switch for each section that would sync with the other panels accordingly. I've looked into the Lutron Caseta which seems like an all right option, but I prefer something as simple and reliable as possible, maybe just radio frequenct based instead of relying on wifi. My basement is already built so routing new wires is not really an option.

    Any help or suggestions appreciated.
