    Energy monitoring / no internet

    Posted: 23 Dec 2020 11:51 PM PST

I am trying to find a energy monitor that just clamps onto the breakerbox incoming lines and possibly also does individual breaker monitoring. Yes there are many different options, but I am restricted because the place I want to put the monitoring equipment does not have internet. I was looking at the "efergy" e2 2.0 wireless. This seems to be the only one that does not need an internet connection and the data can be downloaded onto a computer via USB, although downloading via bluetooth to a phone would be good, so I do not have to lug around a laptop and preferable, that it can also do 3 phase if need be or be added on.

    any ideas???!!

I really just need the monthly usage, but more data and a good interface to look at the data is preferred.

If you can cut into your pipes, what would you install to monitor water flow?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2020 11:01 PM PST

I have access to electrical power outlet, and this is in the basement. If I can put something inline, is there a better option for monitoring water flow than trying to monitor the magnetometer in a water meter?

Looking for something long lasting and pretty accurate. Has to be local of course, no cloud stuff.

Just a simple timer switch and other simpler methods?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2020 10:59 PM PST

I have some cruddy, cheap eWeLink light switches because I couldn't find a basic timer switch for wired in lights.

Now I've got the thing I can't get it to pair with the app to set the timer. It's all in Chinese but AFAIK it doesn't support bluetooth and only WiFi. I can connect to it with WiFi Direct but then I can't get it to pair to the local 2.4ghz WiFi.

Surely there are simpler, more offline ways to do automation tasks like using a simple timer switch? Is there a search term for a more basic approach than full networking?

    Virgin to home automation

    Posted: 23 Dec 2020 02:37 PM PST

Hello home automation veterans, I am interested in buying some automated lights and was wondering what you'd recommend for someone like me..

    • My budget is $150 - 200usd
    • I have an Amazon Alexa
    • Colour-changing dimmable bulb
    • Colour-changing TV backlight which reacts to TV content
    • A strip light (doesn't have to be colour-changing) -All of which can be scheduled and ideally paired with a sensor

    • Additionally rechargable sensor closet lights

Any help would be much appreciated, there are so many on the market these days I can't tell what's good.

When HomeSeer says that their dimmer is 2.76 x 2.48 x 4.49 inches, which one of those is the depth?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2020 07:54 PM PST

Old house. I'm trying to figure out if my (with neutral wire) 2-gang box is big enough for two of these HomeSeer HS-WS200+ dimmers.

My box (rough measurements, with switches still in) is 3 3/4" wide x 2 3/4" tall x just under 2" (probably 1 3/4") deep.

Is that enough? Ima gonna guess not :( bummer

Detect power on one plug and turn on another

    Posted: 23 Dec 2020 04:55 PM PST

So I have a laser cutting machine in the basement of my home. Problem is I always forget to turn off my chiller when I'm done so it runs all day when I'm not home and uses power.

I want my chiller to turn on and off automatically when I turn the machine on or off.

They're on separate plugs on separate breakers.

I have no experience with automation so is there a way to do this? Detect power on one plug and turn on another?

    Thanks!

A simple way to create a touch screen control pannel?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2020 06:19 AM PST

Hi, I have a Raspberry Pi 4 alongside with a 7" hdmi touch screen for it. I have some appliances that I'd like to control such as a Govee LED strip (bluetooth only), 2x BG electrical (wifi) sockets, my pc (WOL), probs will pick up a Broadlink rm 4 mini some point to control my projector and more. I've tried Home Assistant and OpenHAB but in my experience its very hard for them to recognise my devices or do anything with them. Northing seems to be compatible. I have tried just using Android on the pi4 and it seems to work well except some widgets such as Govee Home doesn't seem to work well. Any suggestions on software/OS/apps etc...? Thank you.

    Magic Home Pro

    Posted: 23 Dec 2020 02:57 PM PST

Hi, so I bought some LEDs and they work fine the colours etc. are all okay, but I can't connect them to my phone using Magic Home Pro, Magic Hue Wifi or MagicLight WF. Nothing is coming up in my WiFi settings.

I have tried every solution, the LEDs dont reset even after I have followed the instructions of turning the lights on and off 3 times. The aeroplane mode solution doesn't work either or no mobile data. I have tried the forget WiFi solution as well and it still won't come up.

Can somebody please help me before I lose my mind? :)

    Thanks so much

Looking for a home media system thing?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2020 11:37 AM PST

I have no idea what to even search for. I'm looking for something that potentially has surround sound and will let me connect all my devices, multiple consoles and a PC to my TV with multiple HMDIs. All controlled by Google home or just a remote depending on the price. I have no idea where to start.

The logitech harmoney Hub with an IR controlled HDMI switch looks interesting but I'm really interested in getting surround sound connected too.

    3-way switch (US) options?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2020 07:07 AM PST

    Hi all,

I've been slowly adding Shelly 1's to all of my home switches. I have gotten to a point where all that is left are 3 different circuits that are controlled by 2 three-way switches. Unfortunately they are configured in such a way that I would need an un-switched mains line into the box to use the Shellys.

Does anyone have an idea of what the best solution for this situation would be?

Looking for a Sonoff mini clone suitable for a water heater (16A)

    Posted: 23 Dec 2020 10:45 AM PST

Hi all, The water heater in my new place is connected to a switch with mechanical timer, which my wife likes for some reason. I wanna hook it up to something similar to Sonoff Mini (that can be switched either using the API or the input from the mechanical switch, and ideally that can be flashed with Tasmota), but that can switch a 16A line. Anybody have any leads on a suitable device? If you have experience with it, even better

(Alternatively, is it reasonable to tear apart the Sonoff mini and just replace the relay with a 16A one?)

Choosing a water flooding switch for use with home alarm

    Posted: 23 Dec 2020 02:00 AM PST

Hi all, I'm going to purchase a home alarm system, which unfortunately does not have water flood detection sensors. I want to have two. However the supplier told me that I can purchase my own and he will connect them. Basically the alarm system accepts a simple switch. He recommended using float switch, and I'm not convinced. Seems to be something more appropriate for boats. Any ideas? I want something 'dumb' and no need for wifi etc, something that can close the circuit to trigger the alarm system. Thanks guys.
