Automation for productivity while at work - any help is appreciated! Posted: 07 Jan 2021 06:04 PM PST Hi, I am wondering what are some ways you have automated parts of your life to help with your job? Even simple things like using a google mini to add things to your calendar. I'd love to hear some examples. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Jan 2021 11:40 AM PST Ok, so I have smartthings, google hub/assistant, chromecasts, smartlife and a number of other odd and end type of software/device packages loaded here and there. So how do you bring it all together ? I could use smartthings right ? But does it provide all the capabilities I need ? announcements, voice and all that. Or should I use google and if so, do I need to load things in Smartthings ? So I load everything in smartthings, then I load them into google OH I have some smart relays now I need their software to make it work, then I can load into SmartThings again and then google. It just seems like I'm reinventing the wheel with every device and every hub. If you don't mind me asking, whats your 1 all defined converged platform to make it all work together ? Edit 1: I wanted to update and expand on what I'm looking to do and why I'm looking for a good hub. I am looking to deploy tablets as control solutions for each IoT system located through out the home. I have Tv's in all rooms, patio, full compliment of light switches (TP-Link), a Unifi Network and Protect NVR with 12 cameras inside and outside, to include the doorbell, which I love. I want to be able to control the Tv's, view cameras on tablets or Tv's and have Google voice assistant announce some, not all, changes in state of systems. Not to mention, implement Geolocation integration that opens garage, entry door and a host of other things. Hope this helps! [link] [comments] |
Moved into a home that has Legrand Smart Switches.. how do I access them? Posted: 07 Jan 2021 02:47 PM PST As title says.. previous owner installed multiple Legrand smart switches around his home. I've got the app downloaded and WiFi established in my home. It wants me to scan a QR code to connect the switch to the WiFi. There's only one code I could find and it's outside in the shed where there's a switch. The instructions said to wait until the light on the switch glows amber but I could not get it to do so. So I'm wondering now.. Does each individual switch have its own QR code? If so, I have none of these except the one pasted up out in the shed. Should one be enough to allow me to access all of them? Any trouble shooting tips as to why I couldn't get it to glow amber? Really hope I can take advantage of this feature in the house! Thanks for any advice. [link] [comments] |
Keep my light switches? Some device to publish a MQTT from flipping a light switch? Posted: 07 Jan 2021 04:40 PM PST I'm in the process of updating the electrical in my (very old) house, and plan to add more lights where there currently are none, and updating lights that are already present. I'm planning on controlling these lights with either Shelly 1 (UL)s or Shelly RGBW2s. I know I could get cheap Zwave or other smart switches, but the house has truly unique variety of antique light switches: heavy toggle switches that make a satisfying "thunk" when they are flipped, push-button light switches, and rotary light switches. Keeping the light switches would help preserve the house's character. Are there any devices that could allow me to wire one of those switches in a circuit, use low voltage from the device, and publish a message in an MQTT topic (for Home Assistant) to allow the Shelly's to change based on the switch being flipped? Are there any devices I modify to do that? It doesn't even have to publish directly, just something I could integrate in someway to a Home Assistant/HomeKit system. In my mind, this would be the best of both worlds, I could turn a light on using an automation, then turn it off when I'm done by flipping a switch. Side note: I'm totally willing to buy an Arduino/Rapberry Pi/nodemcu and use that, but I'm nervous about selecting the right resistor for the switches, I don't want the current to be so low that it doesn't reach the switch's Wetting Current, and cause damage to the these antique switches. Any and all advice and suggestions are appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Jan 2021 06:42 AM PST Hey everyone, I'm building a house and I figured I'll lay out the electric circuits myself (I'll have a proffessional check and sign it ofcourse). Part of my research is about lighting automation, I know there are out of the box wi-fi solutions like smart bulbs or smart switches that connect to wi-fi, but I've heard they are not 100% stable (disconnects and such) which is why I'm thinking about a wired design. Also given that I can do anything I want with wiring on the walls I'd like to ask for any ideas I could implement regarding home automation. Thank you for any insights [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Jan 2021 08:48 AM PST I'd be interested to see if they have US AC outlet compatibility (I'm not affiliated btw) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Jan 2021 02:06 PM PST Hi! I'm moving into a new house and I want to get away from my control 4 setup and have a simple audio/tv solution. I will have 6 or 7 TV's and about 4 audio zones. I'm would like to stick an Apple TV or Roku streaming device behind each and use sonos for home audio. Would I be able to control each separate streaming device and sonos audio with one Harmony remote? I'm not worried about any other home automation. I have all that stuff in my current house and no one uses any of it. Lighting, thermostat, turn on the oven... all possible, never used. The TV and music though... everyone wants to watch something different, or listen to something different and I'm not about to spend a fortune again. Thanks in advance for your insight! Help: Smart Line Voltage Thermostat with remote sensor Posted: 07 Jan 2021 09:03 PM PST Hey experts! I just bought a house and I'm trying to improve some odd wiring. Bathroom has in floor heating, controlled by a standard dimmer outside the bathroom (???). I want a smart thermostat, but i cant find a line voltage thermostat with a remote sensor. The best I've come up with so far is the honeywell econnect - I'd stick the relay where dimmer is now and out the wireless control panel in the bathroom. Better ideas are greatly appreciated!!! Relay recommendation for smart switch to control water heater Posted: 07 Jan 2021 07:02 PM PST I am trying to install a smart switch to turn on/off a water heater via Wifi, I already own a wall smart switch for this (Tp Link HS200) . I am having trouble finding the best relay, as the technical specifications of my water heater is 220V 4000W, I found the Functional Devices RIB2401B relay. (Still not sure if I should go with 20 or 30 amps) Do you have any experience/recommendations with this kind of automation? [link] [comments] |
Trying to connect Eufy indoor cams to Homeseer via RTSP Posted: 07 Jan 2021 04:35 PM PST I have 2 wired Eufy pan/tilts and 1 wired Eufy cam that I'm trying to get to show up as a RTSP camera on Homeseer. So far, I've set static IP addresses for the cameras like Eufy guides you to do to turn on RTSP. I've tried pasting the rtsp:// link from Eufy into my Homeseer camera settings but the feed doesn't work. Am I missing something? I haven't installed SD cards in the Eufy cams yet but I plan to do so in the near future. Is this the problem? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Jan 2021 08:16 PM PST I've watched a ton of videos about window blind automation and most if not all are not packaged or not out of the box solutions that can easily be installed / configured by consumers. I did come across this device on Amazon and was wondering if there were other products on the market similar ? https://www.amazon.com/MySmartBlinds-Automation-automated-Compatible-Assistant/dp/B078T1X2HM At $225 a pop That's a lot of dough for a small motor configuration. I did find an article where they were listed at $99 on Amazon in 2018, but I guess since IoT is in high gear now, design and flow come at a premium. Just wondering if anyone has had experience with these, others or doing their own. [link] [comments] |
UK Light Dimmer Switch Modules Posted: 07 Jan 2021 12:10 PM PST Hi - I've been looking at dimmable wall switches, and the options here in the UK are limited. Lightwave seem to be the only real solution, but they're very expensive.I'm completely new to all this, and have no idea about wiring so i've been trying to read up on basics of electrics. I've been seeing these kind of smart modules which fit into switch back box. The idea is that they work with regular light switches.Has anyone had any experience of these? or these type of modules? I know its been asked a lot before, but any recommendations on dimmer switches that work in the UK would be great. Thanks. **Edit - also will need to work with Home Assistant or Hubitat (not decided between these 2 yet) [link] [comments] |
Requesting help with Aukey smart plugs Posted: 07 Jan 2021 02:01 PM PST I've got a set of Aukey smart plugs (SH-PA1) which I use for automating Christmas lights. I think I originally set them up using the Smart Life app, but control them through schedules in the Alexa app. Halfway through the season, they stopped responding. Alexa says the devices are unresponsive. The Smart Life app shows no devices listed. I've found several different methods to pair these devices to either Alexa or Smart Life and none of them seem to work. Does anyone have any tested or trusted methods to get these to pair? I don't remember the exact process I got them to pair before, and I am stumped. [link] [comments] |
Schlage Sense with Apple Homepod and Google Assistant Posted: 07 Jan 2021 12:46 PM PST Hey all, I know that the Schlage Sense requires either an Apple Homekit hub or one of their specific wifi adapters to use remotely. I was wondering if it's possible to use my Apple Homepod Mini as the homekit hub and that being sufficient to get Google Assistant access to the lock. My goal is to be able to have both siri and google assistant control the lock. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Can I copy/replicate a Zigbee button ? Posted: 07 Jan 2021 12:10 PM PST So here it is : I had new windows installed, and the blinds changed. It seems to be a Somfy motor with a Zigbee remote Now that I want to HA my flat, I discovered that there is no way for me to access the "setup" electric connection without opening the wood case containing the motor/hub. They didn't give an access when installing. If I open, I must repaint, and I would (largely) prefer not to. I have the remote (3 of them, one for each room) Is it possible to copy/duplicate them in HA ? I have a Cornbee 2, if that helps. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 07 Jan 2021 11:13 AM PST Hey all, my house has no outdoor lighting. Zero. So I want to add some in the front, back, and side yards but there are so many considerations I'm a little lost on where to start. Some thoughts on requirements I have:
What do you all have at your houses? Any recommendations are welcome! [link] [comments] |
Is there anything like "smart window"? Posted: 08 Jan 2021 12:22 AM PST I would like to mount it and open/close based on schedule or preferences. Not "smart blinds" but the whole window. Something like a smart mechanism to open it and close it remotely. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Trouble with Sylvania A19 bulbs not connecting to GoogleHome.. Posted: 08 Jan 2021 12:11 AM PST I have six "SYLVANIA SMART+ WiFi Full Color Dimmable A19 LED Light Bulbs" throughout my apartment. I've always controlled them with the "Sylvania Smart WiFi" app on my phone. I also have Sylvania LED strips, but those are controlled through AppleHomeKit. I want to consolidate all the lights to AppleHomeKit but the lightbulbs won't connect / aren't recognized when adding a device to AppleHomeKit. The only code on the bulb contains letters in addition to numbers, so I can't manually enter it. At this point I am considering replacing all the bulbs with ones that are compatible with AppleHomeKit. Before I make that change I wanted to reach out here. Any advice? ***edited to Apple home not Google home [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Jan 2021 01:14 PM PST I am looking for an exterior light sensor that may also include a camera. There is no need for the light. Can anyone recommend such device? [link] [comments] |
Accessing IOT devices if IOT devices are on a separate network Posted: 07 Jan 2021 03:00 PM PST I have set up a separate network for my IOT devices in my router and have another network for all personal use. I have a couple of Sonos Ones that I would like to put onto the IOT network but would it still work if I am connected to my personal network and not on the IOT network? It seems like there are issues with finding devices if you're not connected to the same network [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Jan 2021 07:42 PM PST So I have a new house with a fixed flame fireplace (meaning its either on or off, nothing in between). There is a regular rocker wall switch nearby that operates it, by simply connecting the circuit to power it on. From what I can tell, there is always a load on the wire. I'm looking for a remote controlled option that would work here. The problem is, there is not a heavy enough load on the wire to power a regular switch. It's as if the fireplace is wired directly and then they spliced in a switch control into the wire running to the on button. Is this a low voltage scenario? I can find plenty of remote controlled switches that get their power from normal 120v wiring, but I guess what I need is a switch operated by an outside power source (9V battery?), or some other way I can't think of. And to clarify, there are only two wires running to the current rocker switch, both of which just go to the fireplace unit. [link] [comments] |
Using single/double clicks on ZWave light switches Posted: 07 Jan 2021 11:11 PM PST TL;DR - is there a ZWave in wall light switch where you can send a signal to the ZWave controller/another node with a single click, but control the output load with a double click? Background: One of the core tenets of my home automation is that my house must work without any dependencies, whether they be Internet based or local. For lights, this means the local light switch should always work, even if my local OpenHAB or Home Assistant server is down. These servers simply augment capability (add Alexa, HomeKit, rules, etc). I've moved all my dumb lights to ZWave, which works perfectly. I have several rooms with LIFX bulbs that I'm trying to solve for. I've invested a bit in LIFX so don't want to repurchase. My ideal setup would be a single momentary press of the switch will send a signal to the controller that OpenHAB can then use to turn the LIFX on or off. A double press should control the actual local load however, so if OpenHAB is down (or the LIFX is bugging out), I have a way to control the light. I've got several Aeotec Nano Switches which I know can't do this, but reading about scenes in the Fibaro FGS 214, it's seems like this may be possible? I can't for the life of me figure out from the docs if the parameters would allow this. Any one have any advice, own these Fibaro, or know how I could implement this in an elegant way? (Elegant meaning there's just a single, normal looking switch on the wall that contains this single/double press logic) I'm wracking my brain, but can see a way. [link] [comments] |
Pair Ikea bulb with both hub and switch Posted: 07 Jan 2021 10:59 AM PST Hi I read somewhere that you should be able to pair the Ikea bulbs with both the Ikea on/off switch and a hub (not the Ikea gateway). I've been trawling through forum posts the last couple of hours but I can't figure out where I first found it. I've got Hubitat and the bulb pairs fine but when I afterwards pair it with the remote I can no longer control it from hubitat. Is there a trick? Or maybe it doesn't work that way?
