    Lazy with washer dryer

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 12:58 AM PST

Partner and I are super bad at dealing with our combi washer dryer, the main issue being it never fully dries with one dry cycle, so we always need to run 2-3 dries.

So if we leave this too long the clothes smell bad and we have to start again.

Is there UK style smart plug that I can plug the machine into so that when it's finished (i.e stops drawing a large current) we can get a notification on our phone or via our Amazon echo devices?

Wanting to make a dumb heating system smart.

I have 4 cadet heaters in my house and they all run independently in their own rooms. Does anyone know a way to make central heating like setup out of these? They work well but they are inconvenient.

Smart lock for gate in multi-unit building

    Posted: 06 Jan 2021 03:39 PM PST

    hey there,

I live in a 3-unit building and we share a common outdoor gate. We'd like to install a smart lock that all 3 families can control remotely.

Is there a system that would look like one lock connected to 3 wifi adapters (one per unit) each connected to their own wifi network?

Best way to get smart switches square and flush

    Posted: 06 Jan 2021 02:20 PM PST

I have been going around the house installing smart dimmers throughout and am struggling with getting them square, especially the multi-gang boxes.

The wiring is solid core which is hard to push back into the box and the smart dimmers are pretty deep so when I go to screw them in there is usually more resistance on one side than the other causing the switch to not look flush or sometimes even not line up to the multi-gang wall plate once installed.

Anyone have any tips or tricks?

Liftmaster Garage Door Openers acting as Internet Gateways my MYQ app?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2021 09:33 PM PST

First time Reddit poster here! Sorry in advance for the length of this thing.
I have 2 garage door openers. One was new with my home (built-in 2019) and the other I had installed. Mind you, I had previously had one installed by the same company just a year prior in the previous home. The device Installed by the company and not the builder looks exactly the same as the one in my old home. The device installed by the builder/contractor is similar but has the lights on both sides. In any case, both of the devices in the new home are Liftmaster and they have the same symbols on them (MyQ + WIFI). Our home was new on the market when we bought it, and we were not a part of the building process. As a part of the build, there were some smart features: A router, Elan Thermostat, and G1 Controller, Vera Edge Z-Wave Hub, some Leviton switches, and a Ring Doorbell. This seemed great, though we had never used ELAN or Z-Wave. As part of this, we had some info for someone to call and set things up for us.

First things first, the router coverage was awful and we instantly set up a 2nd one. In hindsight, we should have just updated to Mesh right away, but we did it later in the year around Black Friday (Google Nest WIFI, it's great so far). So long story short, some random dude set up our smart home stuff despite us both working in the Premier Enterprise Tech Support Space and being fully capable of doing it ourselves. Get the new Mesh system set up and of course, we have to re-connect everything because our old routers had 2 networks, one for 2G and another for 5G. Because I'm fairly tech-savvy, I decide I'm going to figure out this ELAN thing. Of course, I come to the conclusion that you can't actually manage it unless you're a dealer. Instantly decide to ditch it because no thank you--I'm not going to pay someone to come here whenever we want to install a new light switch or device. So we get the Z-Wave controller reset and connect everything Z-Wave to that and set everything else up on Google Home.

Except that's where the problem comes in. I had a HELL of a time setting up the garage door openers. This seems crazy since I have done it before with ease! Long Story Short(er, again), I messed around and I was able to set up the garage door openers using a serial number and selecting (Internet Gateway) as the device in the MyQ app instead of selecting "Garage Door Opener with WIFI (Ceiling Installed).

I'm making extensive notes on the whole experience so that I never forget if I have to do it again, but mostly wondering if anyone else has ever experienced this or has any idea why this would be the right setup?

I'm thinking the ELAN guy who came in before did something to it, but I don't really care to give him a call.

How to control multiple lights or one light with same switch.

    Posted: 06 Jan 2021 05:47 PM PST

Hi All, I am a total noob when it comes to smart lighting. I have 3 exterior dumb light fixtures with flood lights on the back side of my house. One at either end and one in the middle. None of them are near enough each other to have switches in the same location. How would I go about putting in a smart switch that could turn on all 3 at once but also just the middle one if I so choose? I would like to do this with a switch and not an app.

I would assume I would need smart switches for all 3 locations? Or all smart bulbs with 1 smart switch?

Which would be the best or cheapest option?

Is it possible to do without a hub?

    Which products would you recommend?

    Thanks!

DIY Automation or buying things ready-to-use?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2021 05:11 AM PST

I've got a little storage near my abitation that i'm designing to use as a personal lab, with a place for multimedia features, a place for coding, one for development of electronic , 3D printing etc..

For years i had the dream of building a domotic / automation system by myself, but in normal habitation the project would always be too big and too complex for a place where me and my family actively live.

This time i'm literally forced to do everything from painting, to wirings, cause in this storage all I got is just 4 walls, nothing else.

Counting that i would have just the weekend for working on it, and i don't have any hurry to finish it soon, would be better to build everything by myself, with the risk of stretching a lot the time for finishing the storage, or buy things ready-to-use with the cons of not having customization and less fun?

For information, i've got the ability to dev in Python and a little C for Arduino, know a little of networking systems and got a qualification as electrician (just to say that i'm not here to build spaceship without knowing what a wire is)

I'm counting on your answer as people who got more experience than me :)

Xiaomi Hub + Temperature Sensor + Google Assistant?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2021 03:51 AM PST

    Hi folks,

I've been slowly stepping into home automation and am currently looking for a relatively cheap and easy solution to get my Google Home Mini's to tell me what the temperature is in a certain room (Hey Google, what's the temperate in the lounge room)

I've done a fair bit of reading up to the point where I've honestly probably confused myself. I recently purchased a Xiaomi Mi Smart Home Hub V3 which will arrive tomorrow with the plan to purchase some AQARA Temperature Sensors or something similar - but now I've read this may not actually link up with Google to the point of getting it to respond to me with the current room temperature reading.

I have a Xiaomi Air Purifier 3H which actually shows the temperature of the room it's in, but I haven't been able to figure out a way to get that data into something Google can respond with.

If anyone could give me some straightforward pointers on what I need to do, or if I'm even on the right track, because despite reading many posts, many articles on the web I have absolutely confused myself.

    Thanks!

Most used devices for a new hous

    Posted: 06 Jan 2021 03:57 AM PST

Hi, so here are my doubts any help will be perfect. I'm wondering what kind of devices I could use for a new house. First I think the best is to have two networks, one for cameras, doors, alarms ... to other one for entertainment, alexa, Internet ... In terms of security if don't know if its the best to have doors than could open through Internet but is one option. Also I find it could be interesting to control temperature. Do you know any basic guide for interesting thinks that are in a budget for maybe 1000 or 2000?

    Thanks!!!

    Humidity/temperature sensor

    Posted: 06 Jan 2021 06:42 AM PST

Hi, I'm looking for some advice on a humidity/temperature sensor. I have a few requirements, and can't seem to easily find the info that fits my needs.

-It's going to be used in a cabinet outdoors on my front porch. So it needs to tolerate cooler temps and higher humidity but will be completely protected from wind/precipitation.

-I need it to be able to control a smart plug with automation. I use Alexa and SmartThings. I have an ecobee thermostat as well, if that's a connection method, and I can use IFTTT as well.

-I need it to be fairly accurate. I'm using it to measure the temp and humidity of a chamber used to cure ham.

-I'm looking for something plug and play, and not terribly expensive. Hopefully around $20.

    Any help is appreciated!

    Automating blinds inside door

    Posted: 06 Jan 2021 06:45 AM PST

My sliding patio door has blinds inside the door. They're controlled by magnetic sliders. On the outside of the glass is a magnet in a track, and inside the glass is a magnet attached to the mechanism.

Any suggestions for how I could automate these? I guess I need some sort of motor to drag a magnet.
