Chamberlain MyQ completely stops working after submitting request to "DobNot Sell my Personal Data."

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 07:11 AM PST

I bought a Chamberlain MyQ in Black Friday for $19. Despite its limitations, it was a great device for the month it worked and I had it set up with Amazon Key and Google Home. I also ran into a technical issue caused by either my password being too long or having invalid characters - regardless, not the point of this post.

I submitted a normal "Do Not Sell My Personal Info" request under California law. A week later, they reach out saying this means it will make Amazon Key stop working. Typically Amazon would be considered a service provider, but they are clearly selling additional data and told me Amazon Key would quit working.

I told them to go ahead. A few days later, I tried to use Google Assistant to close the door and it didn't work. I tried to log into the app it said my password was wrong. I tried to reset my password, but the links never came. My device is useless. I've reached out to Chamberlain multiple times who gave useless troubleshooting advice from whatever script they fits the most closely to the issue (change the batteries in the sensor?!?).

The things not a terribly difficult install, but having to get out the ladder and drill because Chamberlain wants to sell off data about my home/away habits with my name and fill address? Not worth it.

Buyer Beware - Chamberlain has some really shady business practices and forcing them to comply with California law breaks your device and account.

    Automate commands within an app?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 11:10 PM PST

A lot of devices seem to allow for usage via an app for a single device but require expensive hubs to operate through things like Google Assistant.

Has anyone tried using a second phone/tablet as a "hub"? Essentially using the phone to perform the "commands" (e.g. Open App - > Click "Light A" - > click "off" - > close app through secondary automations such as IFTTT or tasker or Google Assistant.

My use case is buying a SwitchBot which are about $30AU at the moment and using my backup phone to control the app, but automate that vis my Google Home.

I have a Samsung phone so Bixby, Google, Tasker and IFTT are options for me if that matters?

Struggling between going all-in on Google Nest's suite, or building from scratch?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 11:44 AM PST

    Hey all

First time home owner, long time tech lover.

A few of my family members have Ring or Nest doorbells, along with some cameras. The ease of integrations with those respective vendor apps are pretty sweet, and obviously attractive. And my wife and i use Pixel phones and have some chromecasts around.

However, I have larger visions of z-wave switches and various sensors throughout the house... eventually.

I've looked into getting a Nest Hello doorbell and some of the Nest Outdoor cameras, but i wonder if by doing so, i'm limiting my abilities for z-wave products later?

My end goal would be to have one app or one interface where i can see and control everything.

I've tried doing some research but man theres a lot of moving parts in the home automation world! lol

Master control power strip not working with my TV (LG OLED65CX) - any suggestions?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 01:14 PM PST

    Hey all,

So, I have a problem with a master control power strip and my TV, and I hope someone can help.

I have my TV connected to a master control power strip with a bunch of devices connected to the slaves. The TV is plugged into the master/control, but the power strip doesn't turn off the slaves, when the TV is turned off. The power strip is just always on for every outlet. Any suggestions or experiences with this?

I have tried using another device as the master and then the power strip works as intended.

I have tried unplugging all cables from the TV except the power cable, which is connected to the master, but this still doesn't affect the power strip, when I turn the TV off (there is an audible "click", when it shuts off power).

I have also tried to turn off "Quick start+" and the standby LED-light in settings to minimize power consumption from the TV. Doesn't help either.

If you have a master control power strip that works with the CX, please provide a link to the power strip, so I can compare it to mine.

Thanks, and Happy New Year! :)

    Ecobee blower fan running status

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 09:30 PM PST

I want to be able to trigger a booster fan whenever my blower motor turns on. So a cal for heat, cooling, or recirculating. Other than adding diodes or relays at the terminal board on the furnace to a dry contact from like a door sensor, is there a software way to accomplish this. I'm trying to use HomeKit exclusively with HomeBridge or anything else. Thanks

    Wired whole home audio?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 07:48 PM PST

Does anyone have recommendations on wired whole home audio systems. I know of control4, savant and sonos but those seem overkill for my intentions. Im looking for just a solid system for music. 6 zones. Maybe 3 sources.

Meco cam - what's the login info? Can't find it anywhere.

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 07:46 PM PST

    Hey there,

I have just bought and installed a Meco Camera (this one because it's super cheap https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B088K141DL/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and I'd like to view it on something local like iviewer.

I've given up trying to tie the Yi Camera app to google, and it works with alexa, but the more I've looked into this the less I want it broadcasting anywhere.

I ran Fing and founf the IP address, but I cannot find the username and password in order to import it into iViewer. FWIW the maker comes up on Fing as Topwell International Holdinds (sic) and there is very little out there about them.

Any ideas how to make this an IP cam? I had great luck setting up the Vivint (vivitek) doorbell camera just to broadcast over my own network because the default Un/Pw was easily found online.

Does the Aeotec Smart Switch 6 cover up more than one plug on a standard US 110v outlet?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 07:33 PM PST

I've seen a review on Amazon stating that these devices could prevent the use of the other plug in an outlet by covering it up when plugged in. Can anyone confirm? What about if you have a double-gang set of plugs? Could you plug one in into one outlet and one into the other set of outlets? I looked for pictures and couldn't find much of anything one-way or the other.

I want to use these for my washer and dryer to send alerts via Home Assistant when they are done, but if they cover more than one outlet while in use, it's a no-go.

    Spinning out of control!!

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 01:26 PM PST

I have been having a horrible time with SmartThings, Google Assistant, Alexa, and pretty much all of my home automation lately! It is a mess...

I am wanting to try to consolidate now. I want to choose either ALL Google Assistant devices or Alexa devices instead of having a mixture (Leaning towards Alexa). I also want to clean up the device list.

SETUP - I have a Harmony Hub for the main entertainment space, plus that equipment has built-in Chromecast and a Fire TV Stick. That room also has Zwave light switches. I have an Ecobee thermostat (which has been HELL with Alexa skill issues recently!). I basically just use SmartThings as a Zwave hub to get these devices into the assistants but it has a link to the Ecobee currently as well.

So needless to say... the device list in Alexa and Google Home is getting out of hand. It is not uncommon for the Harmony Actions in Google Home/Alexa to get confused with the Fire TV or Chromecast devices when talking to the assistants. I have the Ecobee thermostat from the Google/Alexa link and also one from SmartThings, but I know I can just remove unwanted devices from SmartThings and that is the plan, but lately the SmartThings app has just been hell for me as well. My family all uses iPhones, so that doesn't help with a Samsung product. I think just leaving ST completely would be better.

    Anyway.....

I would like better control, and I have played around with Home Assistant before and I loved the control I had and it did well with combining most things, but I need remote access to the home. The dilemma is, I am on AT&T Fixed Wireless internet. So... with HA, I could not get outside access to work with the SSL/port forwarding/etc. The AT&T network causes issues with that.

My question - Would a Hubitat hub be the same way? Do they need special setup, or do the apps just work like SmartThings and other cloud apps do? Would it be a better fit for combining all of this or would it just be another ST clone?

Any other suggestions on downsizing/decluttering all of these different services?

Is it just me or is Home Automation just getting out of control with too many (or no) standards?!

    Production Quality Home Automation System

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 06:29 PM PST

I own, and was living in, an upscale property in Malibu but we are moving out of CA. I am keeping the property as an investment property (but might also sell it).

When I was living in the property I had a decent system running OpenHAB ZWave on a RasberryPi with an Aeon ZStick. It was pretty good but required tinkering and maintaining. Even when things were working well I would not consider it "production quality" fit for a buyer or tenant. As a landlord the last thing I want to be is a tech support agent.

The house is currently undergoing an extensive remodel so I have the opportunity to do things like wire ethernet, install new switches, tablets, etc.

I think it would help sell the place if I could have 5-6 touch pads in various locations that could control lights, air, and possibly music. While I can accomplish this with OpenHAB I am not sure that a RaspberryPI is the right fit (or is it?)

I need something reliable and sturdy. I think a lot of the issues came down to the Zstick. I am planning on having an IT closet with a server.

What is the best route to go here for something more commercial and appropriate for tenants? Should I keep OpenHAB and upgrade hardware? Keep Zwave or try something else? Use a better, more commercial-ish controller?

    Help!

dealing with smart devices in rental property between tenants

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 05:59 PM PST

I'm planning to rent my house out soon, and I've been thinking of keeping this smart theme going.

I have a ring doorbell and floodlight, nest thermostat, and somfy mylink bridge. short of removing them, what is the best way to transfer control of devices between tenants, assuming the tenant doesn't unlike it form their account or something.

Problem is i'm not going to live in the same area to come take care of it, so been thinking removing it completely makes the most sense and allow the new tenants to install their own if they wanted.

I may have answered my own question haha

Has LEDvance/Sylvania killed the Smart+ wifi bulbs?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 09:58 AM PST

We're slowly converting our whole house to the Sylvania Smart+ wifi bulbs. The value of those bulbs is phenomenal, even if the Sylvania wifi app leaves a lot to be desired. However, I've noticed that as of this week, none of the wifi bulbs are available on Amazon. Are they discontinuing the line? Or could this be related to the lawsuit between Osram's new owners and LEDvance?

Smart in-line dimmers without breaking the bank

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 07:32 AM PST

Hi all, I have a few lamps around the house that i want to make dimmable. I have seen the following

GE Enbrighten and Leviton but honestly, I'd rather not spend that much for 3-4 dimmers. I'm running HomeBridge and an iPad as a hub for HomeKit. Are there any other cheaper solutions? or a DYI option that would out cheaper?

    Thanks!

[EDIT] - for Lava lamps, requires incandescent bulbs.

Converting Apartment smart home setup into a full house one questions.

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 10:42 AM PST

Hi guys so basically past 5 years I've been using smart devices in a small apartment setut. Current Devices and systems are:

    Google Home Hub-2

    Google Home pucks- 4

    Nest Hello-1

    Nest Yale lock- 1

Philips Hue color Bulbs/ bridge- about 15 bulbs 1 bridge

Smart Things gen 1 Hub- 1

    Nvidea Shield- 1

LG smart washer/dryer- 1 of each

    Nest Outdoor Cams- 4

The setup is everything goes into the smart things then that goes into the google home hub for voice commands and syncing with my pixel devices. Now that I own a home though these are the expansions I want to do and would need advice on the devices and how tos.

    1. I now have recessed lights and some are in a vaulted ceiling, will regular hue color bulbs work or do I need a different hue bulb for recessed lights.

    2. Are using hue bulbs in old recessed lights worth it or am i better off buying the hue recessed light all in one things (https://www.philips-hue.com/en-us/p/hue-white-and-color-ambiance-downlight-5-6-inch/5996611U5)

    3. I want to put smart light switches/ control panels on the walls in every room, so you can control anything via voice from the supplied google pucks or by taping the panel on the wall. Does anything like this exist or if I want a control panel I need to buy cheap tablets and run home assistant? I would prefer not to. My setup isnt so much automations rather a home network for smart devices.

    4. I do need smart locks for my two rear doors however I've been trying to find ones that don't have a keypad. Is this possible to just make the deadbolt into a smart device or am I better off just buying 2 more nest yale locks?

    5. Last question is what are suggestions on smart garage doors/ openers, smart outdoor flood lights, outdoor driveway pathing lights, and finally smart blinds. I'm sure other questions will come up but

Surveillance Camera System/Set with pinhole cameras? Recommendations?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 08:27 AM PST

I am looking for a Surveillance Camera System set with pinhole cameras for out door use.

I noticed there are only sets out there with casual cameras with casing to put on the wall.

But I need one with pinhole cameras which fit in to my door spyhole and also can hide in objects for outdoor viewing.

Therefor would be also a night vision from help.

They should work over wireless, and only need a energy source like casual eu plug.

And a kind of a mother box for keeping the recording and analysis for movement detection that I don't have to monitore/watch 24 hours surveillance footage.

    Thank full for any recommendation!

Minimum Hardware Needed for wall switch + multiple plugs

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 09:39 AM PST

    Hello all,

I'm trying to come up to speed on the latest in HA tech after going deep in to X10 a decade ago and then ignoring everything since then!

I'm trying to solve a specific problem and I know I can solve it with any of the many full-blown HA systems discussed here, but this is "using a cannon to kill a mosquito" territory if I'm not careful.

Specifically, I want to convert an existing wall switch that controls one wall plug to something smart enough to do that but *also* send a command to several other smart outlets/plugs. (The wall switch is currently a 3-way style but I'm comfortable with bypassing the 2nd switch if needed - it's in a location we never use it.) Basically I want to be able to slap a wall paddle and have 4-5 lights turn on. That's it.

    * I don't need voice integration or other full-blown "scene" control. We have non-tech-savvy people in the house so I need these lights to all work from a "normal" wall switch without an app, etc.

    * Also local handling virtually a must-have since we can't tolerate inability to turn on lights due to DSL going down, etc.

    * Strongly prefer something non-WiFi for the main signaling - our particular house construction/layout makes for a challenging WiFi environment in a best case, don't want to add burden to that. (Though I won't look down my nose at WiFi support, there are things I *may* be able to expand to later.)

    * I'm a techie, but not looking for a project at the moment, so something relatively off-the-shelf would be great.

If it weren't for the wall control requirement, I'd just get a bunch of the Ikea Tradfri and sync them together. So what's the minimum hardware I need to get this done?
