As of the end of 2020, what's your best-discovered use-case for a "Smart Plug"?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 08:49 PM PST

I have a home gym in the garage, and I use a TP-Link Kasa Smart Plug to programme a space heater to switch in 45mins before I wake up to work out... curious what other ingenious "around the house"
use-cases this pandemic has created for the "Smart plug" or "smart socket"

Secondary lifestyle Affects of Home Automation

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 10:33 PM PST

Has anyone observed secondary lifestyle affects of having home automation? If so, would you share? An example of what I mean: after scheduling my Roomba, I found my house was cleaner....not because of the vacuum, but because my kids became accustomed to having to stow their possessions lest the Roomba consume their stuff. So the automation resulted in an unintended secondary affect in terms of the children being tidy. Anyone with similar observations to share?

What's the right way to configure a Google Home for a large home?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 10:18 AM PST

We have six family members living in our house. We have plenty of home automation around the house which includes a Google Home, a Next Hub Max, and several Google Home minis. Everyone has their own Google Accounts (i.e. Gmail email addresses).

So the problem is how should I configure these devices? The house is setup under my Google account and this is creating headaches for me. Whenever anyone uses Spotify around the house, it ties up my account. Also, if there is an incoming Duo call, it rings the house (whereas I would prefer it just ring my phone).

Is creating a dummy Google Home account for the house the right move or is there some other way I should tackle this one?

Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated!

Nest Hello Doorbell to atomically play on to Android TV

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 06:59 PM PST

I've been racking my brain on this one all day. I've got 2 devices in my house. A Google Nest Max and Nvidia Sheild TV Pro (basically Android TV).

When my Nest Hello doorbell goes off, I am wanting for it to display the feed automatically onto the TV as well as the Nest Home Max. Currently I've got it to display to the Home Max just fine. But no amount of tinkering can seem to get it to the Android TV.

I can get it to display the feed manually through Google Assistant (ie "shown front door") and it will pull it up. I also managed to Sideload an old version of the Nest Home app and I can get it displaying just fine if I pull up the Nest app manually on the TV. But it won't play automatically when the door bell is pressed like the Nest Max.

Any work arounds that I am not aware of? I've been google fooing all day but can't seem to find a solid solution.

Hardware for new home build, opensource decentralized, or commercial centralized?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 06:18 PM PST

I am in the early stages of planning a new home build, and I'm interested in options and opinions on hardware and systems, open source, commercial, centralized, or distributed.

I built my current house, and at great cost installed a Vantage system. When the system works all is fine, the central power controller and programmable keypads are great, but it lacks many modern features like voice integration (been promised for years), but when it fails it is a disaster as nothing works, and it is a closed dealer only supported ecosystem.

I also run HomeAssistant, but use it mostly for data collection for power, water, gas, and ESPHome controlled devices.

I could again go Vantage, Control4, Crestron, Savant, etc., but I am leaning towards going with HA and distributed hardware control switches and lights, instead of keypads and centralized controllers.

I do wish there were more "opensource friendly" hardware options similar in capabilities to Vantage keypads and power modules, but most hardware targets retrofit vs. centralized, and I assume safety certification cost is a major problem for opensource hardware.

I know this is a very open-ended question, but what are your opinions, experiences, and options on full home control using commodity hardware and opensource controllers, vs. high end systems, and let's say the budget could be the same?

Alternative to Insteon's in-wall micro dimmer?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 10:49 PM PST

I'm upgrading from Insteon to Lutron. I have several places in the house where the prior owner had 5+ wall switches in one place. Looks like a piano. Anyway, I replaced 4 of them with Insteon micro dimmers and put an Insteon 6 Button controller. Worked like a charm.

Now that I'm starting to pass out Insteon, I'm looking for similar solutions using Lutron. (I have some z-wave, but I find z-wave unusually difficult to use.) Does either have a good in wall dimmer? or multi button switch?

I have also seen people running nodered along side HASS so don't be afraid to make suggestions like that. I am not really familiar with all the selfhosted options which is why I have come to yall

Multiple Mini-split AC/heat units smart setup suggestions?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 08:27 PM PST

    I have three mini-split units:
1- First Floor (covers whole floor)
    2- Second Floor (Main Bedroom)
    3- Third Floor (Family Room)
The rest of the house has electric baseboard heaters.

I want to be able to detect the temperature in multiple places and based on that turn on/off or change temperature setting of each unit individually. Any tips/suggestions?

What voltage can my wiring support for smart shades?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 05:29 PM PST

Apologies for asking what I assume will be a very basic question, but I couldn't find a thread about this. I'm building a home and I decided to have some window frames pre-wired for smart shades. My builder has run 16/2 low voltage wiring to the windows in the master bed/bath and the common areas.

I've been engaging with some local blind stores over the last couple days and I have to admit that I'm getting confused. After I told them that I have 16/2 low voltage wiring, Rep 1 told me that I need at least 24v and that 16v won't work. Rep 2 told me that low voltage wiring won't work at all and I need high voltage wiring that will support 110v. I thought that 16/2 referred to the size/gauge of the wire and not the voltage, so I think they may be misunderstanding or perhaps (likely) I'm not asking the question correctly.

How can I be sure that my wiring will support a 24v (or higher?) motorized shade? Is there a good tutorial on this for beginners? How can I know what brands will be compatible with my wiring?

    Zwave Dimmer via app only?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 09:06 PM PST

    Hey folks,

I'm a noob home automator with only my gate automated. I use smarthings as my hub.

I'm about to redo my lights in my den with recessed lights. There are two switches today, one with a dimmer and one without.

I want to put in zwave switches. Normally I want this to be a standard on/off, but via an app I want to be able to enable movie mode which dims half the den and turns off the other half.

I'd rather not get a dimmer switch because I normally only want it to be on and off.

Is there any in wall option for controlling light brightness besides a dmer switch or smart bulb? Note, I already have the new lights and they are not smart and the bulbs are not replaceable.

    Zigbee Door Sensors

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 08:22 PM PST

I have a Deco M9 mesh system in my house and wanted to buy some smart door sensors. I figured since the device has zigbee support, I would use it and buy some sensors that work on the ZHA platform. However, when I look at the list of compatible devices, it is very small:

    https://www.tp-link.com/us/Deco-M9-Plus/compatibility/

Am I limited to the list? I didn't want to have to buy another hub, ie smartthings, etc. if I don't have to.

    Programmable button for android?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 03:49 PM PST

    Hi all,

I'm new to this and don't really know anything about it so please bear with me.

I need to find a way to get a bluetooth/wired button for an android phone that I can program to either press the right hand side of the screen, or swipe the screen to the left.

It's for the Kindle app if that makes any difference.

The set up is having the phone on a moveable arm, which can then be controlled via said button to go to the next page on the kindle app.

I have access to the tasker app if that is necessary.

Could anyone give me some sort of advice?

    Thanks.

Best camera for this situation? (Spying on potential cat killer.)

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 06:38 PM PST

I really don't know what kind of camera would work best for my situation.

I believe there may be a person poisoning stray cats nearby my home. I'm looking for a camera that lets me view from a computer or phone. But do I rely on the motion sensor to record only during movement, or do I have something that I can go through 24/7 footage? I would be placing this camera near a dumpster in the rear of a parking lot. I could ask for assistance from the store the parking lot is for, but I'm unsure how they would respond.

Another main concern is the range between the camera near the dumpster and my home a couple blocks away. Do I need somethings that has a base I keep at home? Again, just really unsure what is the best route here.

    Thanks for for any help!

Tuya smart heating valves + Thermostat

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 06:05 PM PST

    Hi guys!

I ordered 3 smart heating valves from AliExpress for my apartment, in a set with the gateway/hub. Looking around on AliExpress, I found some neat looking smart thermostats, that also use Tuya platform. But in confused on how they actually function, as every single one has a scheme that connects the wires from the thermostat to the valves and (for example) boiler. Since this is an apartment and I can't access any kind of boiler, nor do the valves have any kind of electrical wiring, I'm left completely confused. My question is:

Can I simply plug the thermostat to the wires and connect the valves through Tuya and use the thermostat to control the valves through Tuya and WiFi? I would like a simple interface that all members of the household can easily access and those thermostats on Ali look exactly like what I would need. I'm only left with confusing schemes and lackluster descriptions.

If anyone knows or owns those, I would appreciate the help! Thanks!

Teaching Harmony Hub about a new remote without Harmony (Elite) remote

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 06:14 AM PST

I would like to be able to turn on/off my Philips Projector (Philips Neopix Ultra) from my Google Home Assistant. The projector (model NPX 640) comes with a remote but this model is not listed as one of the supported devices in Harmony Hub's website.

However, it appears there's a way to add custom models to Harmony remote but it is not clear to me if it will work with just the harmony app (android), or do I need the Harmony remote (that comes with Elite) for this?

Also, can I add other non-standard devices which are remote controlled via IR (eg. humidifier)?

    Edit: formatting.

    Smart lighting solution recommendations

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 01:08 PM PST

    Hi All,

We have recently purchased a home which was built in the 80's and want to replace our lighting with a smart solution. Key requirements:

    • We'd like to be able to control our lighting based on motion, I.e., if I walk into the bathroom the lights automatically switch on and turn off on a timer based on motion. The same would be true for stairwell
    • For specific lights we'd like to control these based on a schedule, with flexibility to control outdoor lighting as well
    • We have a mix of 1, 2 and 3 gang switch boxes, some control fan's, others are 3 way
    • Ideally the smart switches would integrate into a hub which can connect to google / apple voice control and also integrate with Serena Shades / similar

In doing some research there seem to be products from Lutron, GE Z Wave, Wemo etc., but some of the offering's are expensive (> $50 per switch) and or don't have the motion detection I was after, or it's difficult to understand which hub is supported.

Would greatly appreciate some suggestions from those that have spent more time going down this rabbit hole than I have currently :)

Home assistant where to start? Pi4? PiZero? NUC? Docker on Synology? Also which zigbee/zwave?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 10:04 AM PST

I have been on smartthings for a few years now, with a couple different locations running v2 hubs, and I'm tired of the automations silently failing.

I ordered a hubitat hub, which is currently somewhere in the postal mail's "In transit, arriving late" black hole, it will probably pop up in a week or two.

In the mean time, I did some more reading and realized that HASS would probably be a better fit for me. But, as with the last time I looked into it, I am getting lost in the myriad of options for the hardware.

I run a Synology in a closet in my garage, so I could move that into the house and hook up a usb zwave/zigbee module, or I could buy an rPi/nuc/whatever.

    • Which zwave and zigbee modules are best supported?
    • Is there a recommended low power rPi/NUC for under $50-60 that uses just a few watts at idle? Hubitat is 1.2-1.8 watts.
    • I see that rPi supports booting from an SSD instead of an SD, and I have a few spare SSDs I could use, but in the documentation it says this will prevent using the USB port(s) for devices... wouldn't that prevent me from using the usb zigbee or zwave module?

    Thanks!
