Is getting rid of Control 4 even worth it (or possible) at this point?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 10:27 PM PST

My husband and I had our Control 4 A/V installation about 1.5 weeks ago and already hate it. All the cool things we were told we could do actually come with caveats, severe limitations, or simply can't be done because of C4. We've run into some sort of issue every day since installation, like something not working at all or not working as it should. Even during installation, there were a lot of things we wanted but weren't given because "you don't want that" or "it'll cost you $$$," such as:

    • Adding our Honeywell thermostat to the app.
    • Enabling Google voice for all devices.
    • Being able to arm/disarm our security system from the app.
    • Playing any TV audio (xbox, movies) through all surround sound speakers.

We can't even play music via Spotify on the surround sound system they installed because "music is stereo only so C4 only plays through the front 2 speakers." Interestingly enough, if we bypass C4 and play directly through the AV receiver via bluetooth, all 4 speakers play music. What gives?

We've spent $20K on this entire system and we're not seeing the value. Clearly, I'm missing the hype and would rather have a bunch of apps to deal with instead of C4's crap. Can we even get rid of it at this point without it costing us a fraction of our soul? If it matters, most devices seem to not be C4-only except for the Neeo remote, C4 controller, and 1 of the amps.

Side note: We have a post-installation/"how's everything?" meeting with our A/V dealer next week, but before we mention our abhorrence with C4, we want to make sure dropping it is even possible/a sane thing to do.

Turn on Google home routines using the NFC tag

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 06:07 PM PST

Hi, I have such an idea, but I don't know how to implement it. I had Smart home things like lights etc. I have an NFC Chip in my hand and it occurred to me that it would be nice to have something like NFC reader anywhere in the house, just to put my hand on it and turn on my routine. But I already have a card loaded on the NFC chip, so I need the reader to read my UID and turn on the routine. I found instructions on the internet, but you had to upload the code to turn on the routine on the NFC chip, which I don't want because I have the card on it I just want the reader to turn on my routine just by reading my UID or that card's code. Any ideas? Thanks

    Started over, need a hub...

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 07:03 PM PST

Just moved and had to leave my Smartthings hub at the old house for the new owners. Getting ready to start all over again at the new house. Looking to stay zwave, hate Wi-Fi switches. Was going to buy a smartthings v3 but can't find it anywhere. What the hell is going on? I am pretty tech savvy but don't want to get crazy. I sometimes like the ease of smartthings.

    Existing plantation shutters

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 02:55 PM PST

It's been a while since this was asked, hopefully someone has a solution now.

Does anyone have a solution for automating existing plantation shutters? There was a promising Kickstarter for a place call shuttereaze, but it looks like it never eventuated.

    Anyone got something working?

Sonoff dual r2 for garage door control?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 06:31 PM PST

I was going to try and set up a sonoff dual r2 in combination with a wyze sensor to wirelessly control the garage door. I have everything integrated with home assistant already. I have seen tutorials for the process but with sonoff sv instead of the dual r2. My understanding is that I can connect the sonoff directly to the garage door motor in the second wired remote hardwire spot. The sonoff is programmed to turn on for 1 second and then turn back off.

Has anyone tried this out with the dual r2? Can I mess up the garage motor if there is too much voltage running through the dual?

New Nest thermostat doesn't show up in Nest app, only in Google Home.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 08:22 PM PST

So just a heads up. "New" Nest thermostats have been castrated.

My utility had a sale on "new" Nest thermostats (Model G4CVZ) at $10 a pop so I picked up two. Figured something was wrong when I saw two AA batteries inside.

Installed one and all over packaging and inside there were notes to use the Google Home app instead of Nest App. Lo and behold after the install it doesn't show up in Nest app at all which means the schedules, the Away/Eco mode, pretty much nothing works. Everything is completely separate from the rest of the Nest system. Worst of all I can't even turn on the fan only without the AC. I have a weird system with 3 thermostats - 1st and 2nd floor heat and whole house AC so need everything to work as one, alas can't do it. At least I only spent $20 on these...

Building Custom Home, Motorized Blind Power Requirement?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 08:18 PM PST

I'm at the rough in stage if my build and have been installing miles of cat 6 and 2 and 4 wire security cable. I want to ensure I have the ability to wire in motorized blinds like Somfy but hardwiring the system for power and com. I believe cat6 will be sufficient for both, but am looking to see if anyone else has done something similar? I would like to use an open source phone system to work with google home as well, any ideas?

Opening my apartment gate with myq

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 11:23 PM PST

So I just moved into a new building that is double gated...there is a master gate that is a multi code gate that protects all the units garages, and a personal garage door. I have myQ set up and I'm trying to figure out a solution for Amazon key or delivery people that, when they try to open my main garage door, they can open the gate as well...is this even possible? Lind of new to this, does anyone have a workable solution to this?

Fast motion sensor with Lutron switch

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 03:43 PM PST

I am trying to find a fast response motion sensor that will turn on a Lutron switch? I am loooking for something with quick response (<1s) and a 1 minute shutoff.

I looked at the Fibaro but it has a 2s delay that cant be overwritten. I have a smartthings v2 hub and can purchase a Habitat system if needed.

    Any recommendations?

Motion sensor overload for home assistant. Do i need a hub or just a usb zigbe stick? And are there any good looking corner mount sensors out there?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 03:41 PM PST

If i get a usb stick im done right? Im using windows 10 via virtualbox. And suggestions on which one?

I keep reading xiaomi are the best motions but im not a fan of the way they look. I currently have a simplisafe alarm system and their motions are attractive and corner mount to the wall which makes them practically disappear. Ive looked at dozens of sensors today and it seems like the better looking ones are full of problems like super short battery life.

So are there any good corner mounts that work with home assistant? Heres the simplisafe sensor and basically what im looking for. https://scene7.samsclub.com/is/image/samsclub/0081501702962_B?wid=280&hei=280

Backup cellular internet with automatic switch over?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 12:40 PM PST

Today our internet went out (someone drive into a pole in our street) and it made me think it would be nice to have some automatic switch over to cellular.

I have unlimited cellular data and as many sims as I want (Fi) so I was hoping I can get a cheap cellular modem. I'm not sure about the automatic switchover though. Any idea?

edit: I have a cable modem and google wifi, so I'd like something that I can insert in-between those, that would detect if cable is up/down and switchover to lte (5g to be future proof?) when needed.

    Lutron Caseta Wireless Switch/Dimmer Help

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 03:22 PM PST

I have a Caseta dimmer switch installed at the beginning of my run where the 3 wire switch was and capped off the other end of the run where the other 3 wire switch was.

I also closed off the other middle 4 wire switches in the middle of the run. When I turn the power back on, the lights stay at about 20% and the new switch does not work at all. So, I put the old switch in, and the lights go on, but the switch (old one) does not work to even turn off the light. At this for like 3 hrs and it has me totally baffled.

    Thanks for any help/input

    Jacuzzi "Smart Tub" integrations?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 02:34 PM PST

Has anyone had any experience interfacing with Jacuzzi's "Smart Tub"? It is a direct 3G connection from the hot tub to the cloud, and access is via iOS and Android app. For control and monitoring of the hot tub itself it is actually pretty cool.

My current, specific use case is that I'd like to be able to detect the color of the leds inside the tub, and color match the external strip light leds outside the tub. I see 4 possible solutions to detect the current color:

    1. Use a REST API or other interface to the Smart Tub app to detect the current light color
    2. Interface with existing communications wiring (the same stuff that the Smart Tub module connects to). I've read a couple articles which suggest that most modern hot tubs use RS485 and maybe Modbus?
    3. Determine if there are jumpers on the main control board that I could determine the LED Colors (brief note, despite a mix of RGB led's it only allows about 10 Colors).
    4. Create a "color detector" circuit (found a sensor that is supposed to fit the bill). Detect the color "manually" and since the color palette is so small, assume I can match close enough. There is a small "waterfall" with leds in it so I think as long as I waterproof the crap out of the color detector, I might be able to install this in a location with limited noise and interference.

Thoughts? Any Jacuzzi experts out there?

Last note, I do think that options 1 or 2 give me the most flexibility so I can actually eventually do more with the hot tub (applying a Home Assistant Scene that includes the hot tub for instance).

Cost isn't a huge factor and I'd probably pick a highly flexible solution like 1 or 2 over something more limited like 3 and 4.

Flic Button to Arm Arlo Pro?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 02:32 PM PST

Has anyone integrated a Flic button for this purpose?

    Looking for light switch recommendations!

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 11:55 AM PST

    Hi All!

I'm trying to figure out which smart switches make the most sense for me and hoping you all can advise!

I live in a fairly old house, so the wiring isn't up to modern code. We have no neutral wire. I'm already planning on getting the house rewired so we'll have one soon and am trying to figure out which switches to buy when we do that.
I had originally wanted to have dumb lights and smart switches, but since switches aren't possible just yet, I started playing with Hue lights and I like them a lot, so I'm changing my mind on what I want out of switches. Here are my thoughts:

    • Lots of my switches now only control Hue lights, so I want to keep the lights powered 100% of the time. Are there smart switches that can do this? I would like to wire them into the house so the switches' processors are powered, but I don't want them turning off the power to the lights
    • I want something with a public API. This is one of my favorite things about Hue products. I'm very comfortable with programming since it's something I do a lot for work and I'm currently only using my own code. I want to keep it that way because I hate black boxes. I could also accept something like TP-Link that has an API that's been nicely reverse-engineered and has a reasonably nice Python package.
    • I do need to have SOME dumb products in the loop. Most importantly, I want to add smarts to my ceiling fans without having to replace them with smart fans. But maybe there's a different solution for fans that I'm not aware of.
    • Some of my switch boxes have one switch, others have two. I'd like to avoid having to patch or open up holes in my walls.

    Thanks for your help!
