    Noob Getting Started Questions

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 05:52 PM PST

Moved into a new house and am interested in some basic automation (for now :)) and overall making some things around the house "smart".

Here is what I have presently and where I'd like to get to.

Currently have Reolink PoE cameras + NVR and a Ring doorbell.

    Hunter Douglass powered blinds

Multiple dimmable lights (dumb presently and thinking about putting in smart witches)

    Sense electric and solar monitoring.

    My Q garage door opener.

    Full Meraki network stack.

I'd like to end in a state where I can have all my devices visible and controllable in a single dashboard interface. Thinking Home Assistant with maybe a lovelace dashboard. Open to ideas, pros and cons.

So for smart switches, I've read the GE ones are reliable. I need guidance on connectivity methods.. WiFi vs Zwave vs Zigbee and so on. If I don't use WiFi, how do these devices all stay connected and sync'd throughout the house. Home is close to 4k Sq Ft. Leaning towards running Home Assistant on a NUC in my basement network rack.

Comments and suggestions are welcomed and appreciated!

    Thanks

    Question about neutral wire

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 09:32 PM PST

    Hi all,

This is probably a really basic question, but I'm stumped and hope someone can guide me.

I'm trying to install z wave Honeywell Smart Switches with their Add On switch for 3 way setups in my house. However, I've run into an issue. At the slave switch, there is a bundle of white wires (neutral), a separate white wire which appears to be coming from the master, a red traveler, a black wire (presumably going to the bulb), and a ground. At the master switch, there is a black wire (presumably coming from breaker), red traveler, white wire which I believe is going to the slave switch, and a ground. I do not see a bundle of white, capped neutral wires. In order to install these switches with the add on, a neutral is required at both sites.

Does this make any sense? Am I missing something? Is it normal to have a neutral bundle at the slave switch but not at the master switch?

    Thank you for your help.

Smart toggle or smart controller behind dumb switch?

Can anybody help me? (can't connect Alexa to Chinese Xiaomi Robot-mop)

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 07:32 PM PST

Some time ago I bought a Mi Robot Vacuum-mop which I could only connect to the Mi app if it's set to Chinese mainland. The thing is I live in Brazil and it seems that Alexa just can't sync.
Do you folks have any idea of what I can do or try?
    I'd really appreciate.
    Cheers!

    Google vs apple?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 07:04 PM PST

I just bought my first home so I'm just starting out on this whole smart home thing but I love the idea of it and want to get started my only issue is trying to decide between apple or Google any advise? I'm not deep in any ecosystem and will be picking up a new phone tomorrow either a pixel 4a (5g) or an iPhone 12. From there it's either stadia chromecast with Google tv a Google home with a hub or an Apple TV apple HomePod with an iPad for a hub.

Nexia Z-wave Bridge Replacement? Need to control my Schlage door locks

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 09:01 PM PST

As the title says, I want to replace my Nexia Z-wave bridge, very poor sporadic signal strength. Anyone know of a compatible hub that will work? I just purchased two Aeotec Range Extender 7 Zwave Repeaters hoping it will improve signal strength and alleviate the problem.

When I contacted Nexia, that have an updated wifi hub, but the tech told me they are having many problems with the unit.

Remotec Z-Wave AC Controller or Sensibo?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 08:50 PM PST

    Hi gang,

I'm currently looking at options for A/C controller to integrate into Home Assistant and wanting to get opinions on the Remotec ZXT-600 vs the Sensibo Sky option.

At $20 more expensive the Sensibo seems like the better option, but want to be sure before I purchase anything.

    Thanks!

Displaying energy used per room in Home Assistant floor plan?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 09:05 AM PST

I'd like to use this to actually gather the energy data from my electrical panel. This is hooked up to HA with ESPHome.

I'm vaguely familiar with floor plan plugins for HA. What would be the best way to bring the current energy data in to display it per room? In some cases, like the kitchen there are more than one circuit, so I would need, ideally, to display energy used over the fridge and oven, then an overall total.

Any ideas? I feel like this would be really useful.

Looking for a smart ceiling fan. Any recommendations?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 09:46 AM PST

Hi, I'm looking for a smart ceiling fan that would synchronise with Google home easily and work with smart bulbs. Ideally one that I can change the colour of the light, the dimness and the fan speed all with voice commands with my Google. Any recommendations? Thank you in advance!

Advice needed: HDMI Switch/google home/IR remote issues

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 02:00 PM PST

I need help finding a good solution for a combination of problems I have:

    1. My tv only has 2 hdmi inputs, and I need at least 4

    2. With the way that my tv stand is set up,my soundbar blocks the IR sensor of the tv for the remote. CEC takes care of this issue somewhat for powering on, but I run into issues with switching inputs and powering off.

So, I obviously need an hdmi switch. And I'm also looking into possibly doing a Logitech Harmony Hub or something similar to help solve the ir issues while also connecting to the semi robust google home setup I already have

Big question: Does anyone know of a reliable combination of hdmi switch and remote hub. As in something that I could talk to my google assistant and it would be able to activate the correct channel on the hdmi switch and turn on the device.

Am I asking for too much? Should I just invest in a quality universal remote?

    Thanks for the help!

    Logitech Harmony Remote Replacement

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 11:31 AM PST

I have 2 harmony hubs and they are operating fine, I don't mind them at all. But I'd like to make a customized remote using a cheap tablet like an Amazon fire device. I need to activate harmony activities from it and would love to tie it into other automation like controlling lights. Anyone know of a software that I could use to accomplish this? A layout similar to the elgato stream deck is what I want.

    Looking for water flow sensor

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 01:19 PM PST

TLDR: I'm looking for an inexpensive, 1", potable water safe, low restriction, water flow sensor.

Long version. My house has a hot water circulation pump that keeps hot water at the ready all the time. It saves a significant amount of water because the idiot home builder put the most commonly used faucets at the end of a very long recirculation line. Without it running multiple gallons of water are wasted every day while waiting for the cold water in the lines to be replaced with hot. However, when it is running the long recirculation line cools the water quite a bit and the water heater cycles on and off even when no one is using water.

What I need is a water sensor that tells me when water is flowing. With that input I can build a switch to turn the pump on and off. The most common scenario is when someone flushes the toilet there is a 100% chance they will want warm water to wash their hands. With the sensor the hot water pump would turn on when the flush happens and provide the hot water without the wait and wasted water.

I've found $500 - $900 sensors, but that's way too expensive. Does anyone know of a more budget friendly 1", potable water safe, low restriction, water flow sensor?

PSA/Rant about the relationship of Nest and Google Home "Same but Different".

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 07:20 AM PST

This is probably common knowledge for those who are in the Google/Nest world but it can be confusing for Apple users or even myself, an Android user who doesn't have any Nest devices. If I got something wrong, for the love of god let me know because I'm still figuring it out too.

Nest used to be its own company before Google bought it and those accounts became legacy Nest accounts. After google took over and the dust settled (not sure when exactly), new users would sign up for Nest using their Google account instead but the old legacy accounts still exist so there are two different ways of logging into the Nest app but they are not interchangeable unless you migrate your old Nest account over to Google. On the Nest App there are actually two different links for logging in - one for Google, one for Nest (legacy Nest).

When it comes to linking the Nest App to the Google Home devices, they are treated VERY differently and IMO this is the biggest source of confusion:

    • If you have a legacy Nest account, it's treated as a separate entity from Google so if you want to add your Nest stuff (cameras, doorbell, thermostat, whatever) to a Google Home Hub or Nest Hub Max, you would go to add the devices under "Works with Google" and look for Nest, then use your legacy Nest login information and it works. It has some limitations but it works.
    • If however you set up your Nest app using a google account, or it is a migrated Nest>Google account, and it's a different google account than what you used to set up your Google Home Hub or Nest Hub Max, when you go to "Works with Google" and find Nest, and try to log in, it will not log in because it's expecting a legacy Nest account. It would be nice if it explained that "It looks like you're logging in with a google account" but it just says "wrong username and password"

So the only way to link your Google based Nest account to a Google Home Hub or Hub Max is to use the SAME google account for both. Then after that, you can add individual users to the home whom I assume would need to install google assistant as well if they're Apple users and don't have it built into their phone (please someone correct me on that).

Anyway, I really wish Nest and google make up their mind- is it All Google Home or Nest....

Audiobook automation - something like alexa and audible just for existing titles

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 10:42 AM PST

I love audiobooks and listen to them every day before sleeping.

At the moment I have a function on my phone that stops the audiobook playing on alexa when I fell asleep and I am using the Miband 2 and a bit of python magic to get this info. Sometimes I like to continue to listen in the kitchen.

The nearest thing to a solution I have found is the app smart audiobook player https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ak.alizandro.smartaudiobookplayer&hl=en&gl=US

I would like however to be able to control it by speech recognition without having to buy my stuff over audible. Since alexa command integration is terribly complicated to work with, if you don't want to spend money for home assistant cloud and not an emulated hue.

Can I do this with the Google Pendant to Alexa? Or is there a good diy option for this?

    Controlling lights with end-of-line switch

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 12:45 PM PST

I have some LED lights where the circuit is wired from power to the lights and then to the switch. I have some Shelly 1's and Shelly 2.5's that I had planned to use behind the switch before I realized that the power went to the lights first. I think that I could put the a Shelly device in front of the light (I do have neutral wires), but then the switch won't do anything when the Shelly turns the light (and therefore the switch) off.

Is there anything that I can do so that I'll have remote control of the lights but still have the switch work? I know that the Shelly 1L is supposed to work without a neutral, but as I understand it does this by always drawing some small amount of power when the lights are off, and I'm concerned that this will cause my lights to flicker.

    Shelly Dimmer Relay

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 12:07 PM PST

In the process of building a new home and looking for solutions for light switching (both physical and automated). I came across the Shelly line of relays and am really impressed with the capability and versatility. For the purposes of these questions I am focused on the areas where I want to use dimmable light fixtures, so we are talking the shelly dimmer. My plan is to use momentary style light switches where a single click will change the light state, and a long press will either dim or brighten, depending on my code. Since I have no past experiences with these (I do have some on order to play with) I was hoping someone here could help me with a couple questions.

    1. Will my plan work as described or are there some pitfalls I haven't accounted for?
    2. Is there a way to setup a wifi network in advance and preprogram all the relays so that when they are installed they work as intended (or at least enough) so that the electricians can test their work and other contractors can use the lights during continued construction until the time when I can install the "real" network?

Many thanks in advance for any help and/or advice!!!

Integrate BroadLink RM4 pro / 3 or Mini with IR/RF into Apple HomeKit

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 09:21 AM PST

Alright this was a long time coming - integrated the Broadlink Pro into Apple HomeKit. With the plugin and this device - Basically you can control your dumb devices using the Infra Red & Radio Frequency that comes with this Device. This way - you can get rid of those OLD remotes and get that ultimate device control in HomeKit as well as with Siri. But Mind You - setting up the plugin requires good amount of patience so that you can capture the HEX codes when the device is in learning mode and ensure the functions are configured + mapped correctly.

Decora dumb switch with smart-like activation

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 07:38 AM PST

I'm installing Inovelli switches in my house, some of which will be in 3-way and 4-way configurations.

In at least one instance, I will have to install smart switches next to dumb 2/3 way switches. Additionally I'd like the ease of use of all switches to be "press top on, press bottom off". It makes things easier for guests, consistent use, etc.

Are there any dumb Decora-style dumb switches that are always push-up-on, even in 3/4 way configurations?

I think I just don't know the proper search terms to use to look for these items. Any help - even the search terms I could use - would be exceptionally helpful.

Cheap relays to be controled by raspberry pi with radio or maybe wifi?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 07:37 AM PST

    Hello there, newbie here!

I had the idea of automating my house with my raspberry pi - like turn on/off the heater, the security camera, lights, tv, etc. But all of those things are far appart from each other and I don't want to put wires on everything and connect some 5v relays via wires, so can this be done via wifi or radio signals emitted by raspberry pi? If so, how? And how much would it cost? What are my alternatives?

Thank you for helping a newbie here! Much apreciated for your time.

Newbie looking for product recommendation and possible setup help for smart bulbs and remote wall switch

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 07:10 AM PST

A little background. I'm using Google home assistant as my "control" system and as such I have a system of systems it seems. But for what I have it seems to work well.

Kasa wall plugs: Recently purchased for Christmas lights. Worked great and don't have current plan for them now.

Lutron Caseta wall switches: Smart switches to control can lights and pendant lights. Will be adding more for under cabs and other wall controlled illumination.

Feit smart bulbs: wifi bulbs in multiple rooms. Works well with voice control. Currently only way for turning on all lamps with the smart bulbs in a room is via voice or app.

Goal:. Add a remote wall switch (Not wired into house electrical) to control smart bulbs in a room.

Options as I see it: 1) Replace smart bulbs with dumb and use Kasa plugs with some remote switch that integrates with kasa 2) Replace bulbs with smart bulbs that have a remote switch integration 3) Find a remote switch option that can trigger a google routine to activate Feit bulbs or talk to Feit bulbs directly.

Would like switch to resemble the Caseta or Diva.

My google searching has led me to a state of confusion.

Hey Google, errrrr Reddit, how do I do this?

    Thanks!
