Posted: 11 Feb 2021 12:25 AM PST Unfortunately my Harmony Hub has bit the dust (more specifically the micro USB connector has a bad solder and isn't receiving power) so I'm wondering if I should pick up another unit or if there are better options. My minor gripes with the unit were that it used a micro USB connector for power (that connection just seems to be prone to failure) and it could be a bit finicky at times although I think I got that ironed out with some settings changes. I've looked at various devices such as the Broadlink RM 4 Pro and while they look like they'll fulfill most of my needs I haven't seen many that have bluetooth device support which I really want to have for my Playstation systems. Quick rundown of current devices: Sony Bravia 42" 1080p HDTV (can dig up the model number if needed) Denon AVR-1911 Sony Playstation 4 Sony Playstation 3 Sony Playstation 2 Xbox 360 Nintendo Switch I may be adding some wifi/bluetooth enabled smart plugs as well at some point in the future. I am not averse to running a home automation server if that helps with the experience at all as I have a rackmount server with a lot of capacity to spare. I look forward to any suggestions that you folks may have. [link] [comments]
Posted: 10 Feb 2021 03:29 PM PST So, I've got this door. It's a regular wooden door, nothing special or smart about it beyond the fact that it's the entrance to my man cave. I am often engrossed in a game, movie, or show when noises begin to emanate from elsewhere in the house, forcing me to get up and close the door. I use Hubitat for my home automation with voice control through Alexa. I'd love to be able to say "Alexa, close the door." So far, I've got a spring-loaded door hinge that will close it automatically no matter what, and a Jasco door position sensor. I figured the next step would be to hold the door open with an electromagnet that could be shut off with a simple smart plug, but every thing I'm finding is industrial grade and designed to be wired directly into the mains and alarm system for a fire door. Has anyone seen a simple plug-in electromagnet that could work in this scenario? Or devised another way to close a door on-demand? Note: I am not looking to automate opening the door back up again. Just closing. Thanks in advance for any suggestions! [link] [comments]
Need help identifying these landscape SMD LED, for eventual replacement Posted: 10 Feb 2021 07:03 PM PST We moved in a few months ago, and we have one landscape light that is dead, and would like to learn about what is it. My google-fu is failing me. Can some of you guys that know let me know more about this light fixture? [link] [comments]
Smart switch to control another smart switch Posted: 10 Feb 2021 10:35 PM PST Situation: I have a series of spotlights around main floor living room, controlled from a smart switch (named A) which is located deep inside the living room. This works fine, except I have to go deep inside to control this manually. I also have a dummy switch (yes, it doesn't do anything, tested ) at the entrance of the home itself, is it possible to get rid of this dummy switch and put in some kind of (smart) switch (named B) that will act as a proxy to the actual smart switch (A), so I can control the spotlights from the entrance? Posted: 10 Feb 2021 10:59 AM PST Hi All, I was hoping someone can help me out. I am mounting two iPads using the following Heckler iPad Mounts + Power. These take a 24v passive POE input. (https://hecklerdesign.com/products/ipad-10-2-inch-wall-mount-plus-power)..) The switch which I have is a Unifi 24 Power POE 120w Gen 2 switch which only does 802.11af at 48v. I was wondering how I could get this to work, would putting one of these adapters in the middle work? https://www.ui.com/accessories/instant-8023af-adapters/ -- such as the INS-3AF-I-G? Or could I just use one of Ubiquiti's POE injectors like a POE-24-12W? I have looked at Redpark and the TexasPOE GAT24w25 but 2 of them are going to cost another $150 vs. $11 for a POE injector. Surely there has to be an easy way to do this. Thank you!!! [link] [comments]
Cheap yet reliable temp sensor to set off alarm Posted: 10 Feb 2021 08:41 PM PST I am in need of a temp sensor that can set off an alarm on a phone for example. This alarm will basically be if the temp goes below or above a certain temperature. Have wifi but could look at other options. Power is available. [link] [comments]
Smart plug connected to pc will it be fine? Posted: 10 Feb 2021 10:46 AM PST Hi guys I got a quick question do you think my pc will be fine if I have a smart plug connected to my pc. In the bios I set up ac power loss where it automatically boots up when there's power. [link] [comments]
Need sanity check on first hardware purchases Posted: 10 Feb 2021 04:36 PM PST Completely new to Home Automation and smart devices, and just want to double check the compatibility of the hardware I intend to buy and that it's everything I need to get started. I already have a Home Assistant server running which is what I intend to use for management. Here is my shopping list:
Is this everything hardware-wise I need to get it working? The temp sensor mentions it needs an Aquara hub, but is that necessary if I already have the Zigbee USB hub? I am comfortable flashing firmware/setting up software if needed to make them all talk. Many thanks [link] [comments]
Ideas for power-sensing in-wall outlets with USB? Posted: 10 Feb 2021 04:33 PM PST Hi everyone! I have a pair of TopGreener TGWF215U2AM - these are "Smart Wi-Fi In-Wall Tamper-Resistant Dual USB Charger Outlet w/Energy Monitoring." I bought them when we moved into our current house about 2 years ago, thinking they were awesome and that I'd find a use for them. In that time, though, I haven't been able to figure out what to use them for and they've just been collecting dust in my box of miscellaneous home automation devices. Our house is plenty smart now with tons of smart switches, lamp modules, door sensors, deadbolts, Alexa control, and more (all tied together through OpenHAB). But I just can't think of anything to do with these energy-monitoring outlets. I did install a (cheaper) energy-monitoring outlet for the washing machine so I could detect when it's running, but that's it. I can't think of anything else I might want to monitor power consumption on and if I want a switched outlet or plug, there are much cheaper options (including this pile of Tasmota-flashed plugs sitting on my desk...) So, fellow home automation people, do you have any creative suggestions on what to use these Top Greener outlets for that I haven't thought of yet? Or should I just sell them and use the proceeds for other HA gear I will actually use? [link] [comments]
Posted: 10 Feb 2021 03:24 PM PST I was wondering about smart door locks, and how they open up? Not in an app way, but as in how they physically unlock the door(remove the deadbolt) once they receive your command to open it. Do they use an actuator or servo? Sorry if this isn't the right community to ask this. [link] [comments]
My mom wants a good security camera for around the house, any suggestions? Posted: 10 Feb 2021 10:42 AM PST Hey yall, So recently, my mom want's a good security camera to put around the house. One that'll be able to see at night clearly might I add. I have no knowledge of this type of field so I would like some suggestions. This is just for general security because the area we live in is a bit sketchy. [link] [comments]
Posted: 10 Feb 2021 12:12 PM PST I originally got the Kwikset 914 since it was cheaper but still within the return period. When I paired it with Ring, the Ring app gave be a message about this lock having weaker security. I did see that the Schlage Cam 605 does support S2. That being so it's my understanding that z-wave can only be exploited during the pairing process and I haven't read of any real world hacks on either S0 or S2. Am I just being paranoid or is S2 encryption the way to go for a door lock? [link] [comments]

Anyone Charged their iPad using a POE Injector? Posted: 10 Feb 2021 02:02 PM PST Hi there, Has anyone ever charged their iPad using a POE injector? I am looking at powering two iPads in a Heckler wall mount using a Ubiquiti POE-24-30W - 1.25amp POE. Injector. I am worried that might not be enough juice to keep the iPad running or charging since the Apple charger is 2.1Amp. It is a 7th Gen iPad 10.2". [link] [comments]

How can I have my girlfriend also have lights turn on when she walks in. Posted: 10 Feb 2021 05:30 PM PST I have my lights set so they turn on (after sunset) if I walk in, and turn off when I leave. How can I have my girflriend who lives with me, also have lights turn on when she walks in, and NOT turn off if I leave and she's home. I've left, and left her in the dark numerous times haha. I tried inviting her into homekit but her contact does not appear. [link] [comments]

Sonoff/eWeLink zigbee button to trigger google home routines? Posted: 10 Feb 2021 08:37 AM PST So I just got a sonoff zigbee button for and tied it to the zigbee sonoff switch. I can program it to trigger scenes but I'm actually interested in triggering whole google home routines with this button. I can't figure out any way to do that. IFTTT seems out since they and ewelink went subscription model only. [link] [comments]
Posted: 10 Feb 2021 04:06 PM PST I have a lenovo thinkcentre m72e that has been sitting around for some time, looking to sell it off in the near future, but first wanted to check if it could have a second life as a smart hub or something else useful? Any thoughts? [link] [comments]
(UK) Pre Installed apartment thermostat to Nest advice Posted: 10 Feb 2021 08:24 AM PST Hi! Amateur here. I have just moved into a new build apartment block, with the worlds most complicated and unhelpful thermostat pre installed In the hallway. The combi boiler is in an external cabinet in the hallway. I have hot water on demand (when using the hot taps) and as far as I can tell, the thermostat is a programmer for when the central heating should come on. The existing thermostat is a Salus RT510. I have looked under the cover and it seems that only two wires come out of the wall, connected to pin 1 and 3. My question is, would these two wires support a nest thermostat (E version) and is install as simple as moving the wires from the existing thermostat to the Nest? [link] [comments]
Mini plug to replace wemo? Looking for something small and NOT wifi Posted: 10 Feb 2021 08:12 AM PST Hello. I searched on this sub for recommendations for a small plug that isn't wifi, but I didn't find anything solid. What can you guys recommend that doesn't need a separate hub? I already have a SmartThings hub, don't want to add another hub, and while I'd love to migrate away from SmartThings, I just haven't had the time. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 10 Feb 2021 09:20 AM PST Been looking into streamlining by smart devices for less "clunky" home automation.... The problem is I have items that just don't work together. I need multiple apps to control. I am hoping there is something I can do to control them via one device/app. Ive been looking at the Hubitat but even that is not going to be able to combine Wyze, and Nest. Currently I am using Google Home Assistant which is on/off with reliability. I need a z-wave hub for the smart locks. z-wave - Schlage Smart Locks Wifi - Leviton Dimmers/Switches, Kasa Switches/Power strips Thermostat - Nest Security Cameras - Nest Doorbell and Nest Indoor/Outdoor Cameras TV - TCL smart TVs, LG SmartTV. Harmony Hub A/C's - Wifi LG Security - Wyze Security system (Pre-Ordered) [link] [comments] |
