What do you use IFTTT for?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 08:39 PM PST

Honestly, I've struggled to find a use for IFTTT in my daily life, but a lot of people seem to love it. The only uses I have for it are phone notifications if my wife adds something to our shared calendar, or our shopping list.

What do you use it for?

Lutron RadioRA 2. Other than device cost, why not?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 09:26 PM PST

Just finished my RadioRA 2 training after considering it for a while. Is device cost the reason it's not more popular?

With Insteon dying a slow, weird death, no other system seems to have the breadth of integrated, polished devices that Lutron does. I'm pretty much convinced that RadioRA 2 is the right path for me.

    Thoughts?

Trane TZEMT400BB3 Z-Wave Thermostat with Ring or SmartThings?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 08:33 PM PST

    Hello all,

I have a Trane TZEMT400BB3 Remote Energy Management Thermostat (z-wave). It's currently connected to a Frontpoint Home Alarm System, but I'm discontinuing service for Ring. Anyone have any luck adding it to Ring? My other option for remote control is SmartThings. I'm curious which would be better. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

    iPad and Any tv

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 06:11 PM PST

Little back story, my sister is 40 and has severe cerebral palsy. She has limited control over her motor skills making it impossible for her to do almost anything on her own. She has limited use of her right hand only which makes most tasks very difficult. She's very intelligent but just can't do anything that requires fine motor skills. She has an iPad that she uses as an assistive device so I'm trying to see how I can help her capitalize on that. Her TV is going to need to be replaced and I'm wondering what kind I can buy her that will work with the iPad. Specifically to turn it on and control the volume and change the channels. I'll slap a chromecast on it to stream Netflix or whatever but we have to get the TV on using the iPad. I don't mind buying an additional peripheral to make the two work, but I have no idea where to start. Most apps let you control the tv but only after it is on. Her wheelchair can't get that close to the tv and she has to rely on a comically large remote to control her current tv and I know there has to be a better way. Does anybody here have any insight? Is there a sub that I should look for?

It has to be an iPad because of the government program she is with.

    CbyGE HELP

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 09:12 PM PST

I've had a setup that includes 4 CbyGE bulbs and one plug that serves as the wifi hookup point for the bulbs. They all worked perfectly until this past fall when they began having issues. I use an Amazon Echo dot to control them. While the bulbs still work within the CbyGE app, Alexa cannot get them to connect. I've tried fully deleted and reconnecting them but they immediately become unresponsive again. Has anyone else seen this issue? GE support are all a bunch of useless script readers. I'm at my wits end and ready to replace them all. Any other good recommendations that won't break the bank?

    TLDR: lightbulbs no worky anymore

    New home, clean slate!

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 09:26 AM PST

Hey all, I'm closing on my first home in the next couple weeks and have been avidly researching smart home tech. Between the added square footage and a new ability to make permanent changes I'm pretty excited. I'll share what I have so far as well as what I'm eyeing (and why) for different devices.

    Current gear:

    • Various Hue bulbs
    • 2 x Hue motion sensors
    • Various Sonos speakers
    • 2 x Caseta on/off switches + 1 Pico remote
    • Wyze Pan cam (running RTSP firmware)
    • 2 x Amazon Echo dots (in addition to Sonos speakers w/ Alexa)

Right now I have all of that linked to Homekit for automation but use Alexa for voice commands. I'm fine with this setup for now but I might eventually migrate to HA with this new place. I still would use Alexa for voice and maybe Homekit for UI.

New house is wired with Cat 5e, has a few door/window sensors linked to some random 2GIG security panel. Living room is prewired for four in-ceiling speakers. Crappy Honeywell thermostats. Rainbird sprinkler controller. Marantec garage door opener. LED can lights throughout the house.

    Here's my thoughts by device:

    • Lights: Stick to Hue for lamps and accent lighting. Maybe replace ceiling can lights with Hue in a few places where dimming/colors might be fun (living room?) but otherwise go with switches throughout.
    • Switches: I like the Caseta system so far but I've also been eyeing the Inovelli red series. The scene button and LED seem to unlock a lot of potential plus they're a bit cheaper. I'm also interested in maybe one or two switches with multiple scene buttons but haven't seen anything with a glowing endorsement. I'll probably put "dumb" motion sensor switches in the closets.
    • Garage: Outside of a random dongle sold in Europe, Marantec doesn't seem to smart home-friendly. Meross looks nice but I'm considering a MyQ controller + Linear universal receiver just so I can use Amazon's Key service. Would love to thwart the local porch pirates.
    • Locks: The Yale Assure locks (connected by August) seem pretty well-reviewed
    • Security: This 2GIG panel was installed by an Alarm.com vendor along with a few door/window systems. They unsurprisingly offer cameras and other sensors as well. I don't know that I'm interested in active monitoring and I definitely don't want to lock myself into their system. Any suggestions here? I could use something like Konnected to connect to the wired sensors and maybe an RF module to grab the rest? I like the idea of Noonlight if I want to add monitoring down the road.
    • Doorbell/Cameras: I like the idea of HKSV for cloud storage, facial recognition, etc. The lack of 24/7 recording isn't a dealbreaker and we're pretty entrenched in the iOS world right now. The Logitech Circle View doorbell seems pretty popular but that definitely locks me into the HK ecosystem. Eufy and Wyze's doorbells doesn't use the mechanical chimes which is annoying given that this place has three stories. I'd likely match the non-doorbell cameras to the doorbell vendor for continuity. Am I screwing up by not going with a Blue Iris or UniFi controller and running PoE cameras?
    • Sprinklers: Seems like I can install Rain Bird's LNK module and should be good to go
    • Sensors: It seems like Aqara is hard to beat at that price point. Stupid question: Where are people putting leak sensors?
    • Thermostat: My apartment has a Nest (which I've connected via Homebridge) and it's fine. Seems like ecobee is the go-to here? Do I need three of them to replace all three existing thermostats?
    • Shades: Lutron's Serena line seems like the winner here but is unfortunately way out of my price range. The Tilt MySmartRollerShades seem interesting- anyone have much experience with them?
    • Speakers/Voice: I'll likely stick with Sonos here and connect whatever ceiling speakers to an Amp. Eventually I'll probably migrate from a Sonos home theater setup but that's not as pressing. I'll continue to use Sonos speakers + random Echo dots for voice.
    • Appliances: I still have to buy a washer and dryer. Is it worth looking at something from Samsung for even basic integration?
    • Vaccum: Any suggestions?
    • Smoke detectors: Suggestions? Nest?

So please, critique my selections! Throw out devices/applications I might not even think of! Thanks in advance!

Remote switch for light but not outlet?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 06:24 PM PST

I think this is a pretty simple question, I'm just not familiar enough with the technologies available.

In our 1/2 bathroom, we have a single light and a single outlet. The circuit is wired in series (switch-light-outlet), so that it means if the switch is off, so is the light - as per every other light switch in the world ;) - but so is the outlet.

Rewiring the outlet to be permanent on it's own is a bit difficult because of the placement in the house and the number of finished surfaces, so what I think I need - and need input on what technology to use - is to

    a. Remove the switch from the circuit, therefore making both the outlet and light permanently "on"

    b. Install a remote switch as a replacement - this would be essentially a wireless device, not a true "switch" elecrically

    c. Put a wireless "switch" - like a Shelly 1 - in the lighting outlet which would actually switch the light on and off.

For this particular application, I've no interest in connecting it via any sort of central hub or gateeway, or to my Home Assistant; basically just need a "switch like button" that can communicate with a "wireless actuated switch".

The whole house is Decora style switches, so ideally the 'switch-button' would be Decora style.

Any suggestions on the easiest/best kit to use for this?

Connecting to a Heat Recovery Ventilator

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 07:24 AM PST

I have a Venmar K8 HRV which has 4 control wires.

With wifi relays and a resistor I can use two of the wires to control off, low, and high speed.

What I can't access is the option to recirculate the air. The manual mentions one of the remaining wires is for transmitting the outside air temperature to an advanced wall controller (I have basic), which I assume leaves the last wire for recirculation control.

From my testing, this does not appear to be triggered by high or low voltages like fan speed.

I've read on some old forums that it most likely talks via some protocol, but I have no experience in that.

Has anyone hacked their HRV controls or have any advice where I could start?

Is there an easy to flash LED controller for WLED?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 07:36 AM PST

Does anyone know of a commercial RGB LED light controller that is pretty easy (ie. no dismantling and soldering inside) to flash with WLED? My new living situation makes it pretty inconvenient to solder until I get a better place to work on electronics projects. I'm aware of (and own and use 1 of) the QuinLED Dig Uno boards, which isn't a product per se but it's a bit better than an ESP board by itself; I'm looking for something closer to plug and play except maybe having to wire the LEDs to the controller. Also the Dig Uno is always out of stock (too much demand!)

Side question just for fun, I don't have a 3d printer (yet!) so is there a reasonably priced service that I could use to print a box for the Dig Uno? I'm pretty much clueless on 3d printing right now, something I hope to change when I have a space to work on electronics again.

    Smart irrigation replacement?

    Smart irrigation replacement?

I have a small yard with a 3 zone system. It doesn't have a rain sensor, so I'd like to add a smart system that can monitor conditions and only run the sprinklers when necessary. Also for convenience so I can control it from my phone rather than going down two floors to manually change it (out of sight out of mind issue). Suggestions?

Wifi Inching Switch speeds - Help

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 06:29 AM PST

Hey guys!, I'm fairly new to this and I'm looking for a switch that I can control inching speeds with, but faster than default. I purchased this switch here,

    https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B08F7M82NB/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Its default speed is about half a second (on/off inching). Through the Tuya app, the lowest I can set is 2 seconds. I'm looking to have it set almost instantaneously, basically to lift a solenoid latch to allow a weighted tube to move, and then close back down , to stop the tube from moving too far.

I contacted Tuya about a way to set it to go faster, but they just told me they don't have a way to do that. Is there a way to change the default manufacturer speed, or is there another wifi powered switch that I can set up to turn on/off almost instantly (I dunno, like .10 seconds inching speed?)

    Thanks!

Poe Cameras Viewable in Google Home App

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 06:24 AM PST

I have a new build that is wired for a poe doorbell and cameras. I like the google home app and would love for the preview of the video feed to show up there, like it does with the nest cam. I would love to just use nest camera but they do not have any poe models. Does anyone have any suggestions that will work? A lot of camera like wyze say they have google assistant support (ask google assistant to show a feed on a screen), but doesn't look like they have previews in the google home app. I found a video verifying of Arlo cameras have this functionality but they do not have poe cameras either.

Beginner trying to decide if I should stick with Home Assistant

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 04:57 PM PST

I've been obsessively researching automation hubs since moving into a new place, and decided to try out Home Assistant because:

    • Despite being a beginner, I enjoy tinkering and want to train myself to be more tech-savvy anyway
    • I tend to trust the reddit hive mind more than tech blog listicles
    • I want to spend as little money as possible, and I can always repurpose the Raspberry Pi I bought for a DIY project if it doesn't work out
    • I've had good experiences with open-source software in the past, and HA seems like it has the support to evolve with the industry rather than become obsolete.

Unfortunately after a week of setup and troubleshooting, it feels like I underestimated the amount of work it would take (or overestimated my ability to pick it up quickly). As I consider the additional costs of fully committing to HA (Z-Wave dongle, SSD, etc.), and all the hours it will take just to maintain it, I'm wondering if I should just cut my losses and get a Hubitat instead.

Can anyone be so kind as to give this fence-sitter a nudge in either direction?

Additional Context: I've read all sorts of conflicting arguments on virtually every aspect of home automation, and a lot of information from as recent as 2020 already seems outdated, so it's difficult to determine which bits of advice apply to my situation. I'm smarting up a 2-bedroom condo containing 2 PC-gaming gay dudes. I'm mostly concerned with light switches automated by timers/motion sensors, but I like the possibility of complex automations and hobby projects to work towards, like garden irrigation or DIY smart blinds.

Since last week Google Assistant and IFTTT have been totally hosed.

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 12:37 PM PST

I have been using IFTTT, Google Assistant, and google home for over a year to control devices around my home. My home is a mish mash of different devices, old and new. IFTTT has been absolutely wonderful, allowing me to control anything by simply setting up trigger phrases.

Last weekend everything went haywire. When I spoke a command my google home would respond, "one or more devices are not available, or "it doesn't look like that device has been set up yet," or even sometimes it would say "Sorry, I don't understand."

A support request to IFTTT got the following reply, "We have identified an issue with a Google Assistant update which has caused some Google Assistant voice triggers to temporarily stop working."

They suggested a temporary fix. But none of the suggested fixes from IFTTT tech support help at all.

Growing fusterated with IFTTT, I bought an account on Triggercmd.com, set up their software on my home server, and migrated some of my stuff there.

Though Triggercmd seems to be a little more reliable than IFTTT, it intermittently has the exact same issues as IFTTT. What is maddening is that EVERYTHING works from within the google app when manually triggered, it is only when speaking the command that Google seems to have gone completely stupid.

Anybody else having issues with IFTTT or other home automation scripting services?

Shelly 2.5 test directly from wall outlet

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 05:07 AM PST

    Hi

My girlfriend and I are buying a new house, and I want to install Shelly 2.5 in our light switches. There's still a few months before we can move in, and I wanted to test out a Shelly 2.5 first, to make sure it works as expected, and to get familiar with it. I've never used it before, so sorry if it's a silly question:
Can I take a power cord, cut it in half to expose the wires, connect the Shelly 2.5 to the exposed wires, and then just plug it into the wall? I only want to test out its functionality, and I think it should be fine - I just need to make sure.

I live in Denmark if that's relevant.

    Thanks!

3-way switches, will I need both?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 11:25 AM PST

I have a couple "basement steps" situations where I want to wire smart switches. I'm using the "C by GE" switches, which are 3-way capable. In order to get these working, do I need a smart switch on both sides of the "basement steps" setup? Or just 1?

If it matters, I have no neutral wire anywhere in my house. The switches I purchased are no-neutral-required.

Question about Power Supply... 4mm LED Strip

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 10:37 AM PST

    Hi,

My Dad is building a model railway and wants to light under his station canopies.

He wants some very thin LED strip.

He wants to buy these, at 1m and 2m (for two different platforms).

Would all this work okay, and what amp power adaptor should he get? 1A or 2A? He doesn't want the LEDs too bright as to look unnatural on such a small scale.

Do any of these IP cameras work without the app or the internet?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 03:45 AM PST

    Hi everybody,

I am looking for an IP-Wifi camera that I could place outside my front door that could connect to my house wifi.

I have built a Gui using python where I would like to see the video stream using the OpenCV library. For that, I would need the camera to stream over http or rtsp so that it can be accessed over the browser. It should be able to stream without an app or any proprietary protocol. I have a few cameras available at the store near my house so I was wondering if you know whether I could achieve this with one of them. Here they are:

    Hikvision DS-2CD1021-I 4mm (ant mp) 2Mpx

    Hikvision DS-2CD2032-I 6mm (ant mp) 3Mpx

    Tuya WiFi Camera 2Mpix WFIP-5632T 3.6mm

    Dahua IPC-K35

    DAHUA IPC-HFW1235S-W-0280B-S2

These are the only options available to me right now. Will any of them work without an app or the internet?

How to detect the presence of a bin?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 03:39 AM PST

I use Home Assistant and would like to detect whether my dustbins are out for collection or not. The goal is to create a reminder to put them out the evening before collection - but only in the event that I haven't already done so. Similarly, I'd like to be notified if I forget to bring them in the next day. My general waste and recycling bins are collected on alternate weeks, so I'd also like to know which of the two bins is out at a given time so that I can be notified if it's the wrong one.

I have a long driveway and the bins are stored close to the house. The effect of this is that their "In" location is within range of Bluetooth/Zigbee/etc. and their "Out" location is outside even my WiFi network's range. I don't need to detect whether my bins are in the collection spot at the end of my drive, it would be quite enough to detect that they are not in their storage location against the house.

Whilst there's a purpose to this, it's mostly just a "because I can" use case. I'd thought that potentially a BLE beacon stuck to each bin might be an easy solution, but I've no experience at all with them and don't know how they work.
