    Zigbee Dimmer Switch recommendations

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 06:07 PM PST

Maybe this isn't the place, but I don't want to invest time and money on installing dimmer switches that don't work well with HA, so I'm hoping someone can give me product advice. I have like 40-50 switches in the house, so hopefully something I can buy in bulk and/or cheap. Thanks.

    Lutron motion sensor switches - confused..they only come in 2amp ? Isn't standard 15 or 20 amp?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 08:53 PM PST

All my light switches in my house are the old style 15 or 20 amps.

I'm starting to upgrade to lutron.

Starting with the small bathroom, which controls fan and 4 vanity lights..

Looking on amazon Lutron only have a 2 amp motion switch.

    That.. seems incredibly low?

Installed a GE Enbrighten Zwave fan switch. Is this the switch I want?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 12:26 AM PST

My fan has only 1 power wire, light and fan. I installed this switch and ironically I have been so busy moving I didn't test the fan itself, the light works fine.

What does this actually do in this sense, if my fan/light has 1 power wire how would this switch even control different speeds? Assuming I go to the fan and set it on low, medium, or high would this switch also drop the brightness if I change fan speed to low? Am I over thinking this one?

I don't even know how to ask this as I am confused why I needed a new fan specific smart switch.

    Thanks.

    BR40 smart bulbs recommendations?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 12:12 AM PST

Just moved into a new house, and they have all BR40 recessed sockets. Hue has BR30s. Any ideas on smart bulbs? It's not easy to find recognized brands online selling BR40s.

Home is being built. What should I ask the builder to put in so later automation is easy.

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 11:22 PM PST

Hello, I'm brand new to this community and I am so fascinated with home automation. I'm a complete noob however I'd like to get into the "hobby" of automating my new home which is currently being built.

While the house is still in the bare studs phase I'd like to ask what things I should be asking the builder to put in so later on I don't need to break the bank by having to manually add them.

Someone has mentioned that I should add internet ports on every floor. Anything else? Thank you

    Outdoor Strip Lights

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 12:02 PM PST

I'm looking for recommendations for an outdoor Strip light. I want to put it under a floating bench in my back garden. I have a power source at the bench so I'll be able to wire it into that. I have spot lights around the garden and I'd light to have the colour of this close to matching that. So ideally I'd like a strip light that allows me to customise the colour. Anyone got any recommendations? Thanks

Help on setting up a 3 way switch.

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 12:00 PM PST

Hi there. I want to make one of my 3 way switches smart. The plan is to keep one in the always on position and never touch it so that we can voice control the lights using this one smart 3 way switch.

However, opening the switch box has uncovered confusion. I've read a bunch online and it seems like it's all conflicting information. The "common" screw has been said to be ALL THREE of the neutral, load, and traveller. I don't know what to believe.

I have included 2 images below. One you can see inside the box. There are 3 wires and a ground all the way at the back under a screw. The other is of the current connection to the old switch I'm trying to replace. As you notice on the close side of the picture, there is a black screw and thats where the switch plate has "common" written on it.

    https://ibb.co/dmqtk1y

    https://ibb.co/Ws0k1Jh

Does anyone know which wire is which? I assume the white is the neutral wire so thats pretty easy, but I can't tell if the red wire is the traveller or if it's the black.

    Thanks for the help!

Do these LED strips emits ANY UV at all?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 03:49 PM PST

Do these LED strips emits ANY UV at all?

    Hello everybody,

I have question about LED strips.

I have movie prop that is very,VERY fragile and it's very sensitive to UV.

I have it displayed in my cabinet and I bought LED strips for illumination.

Problem is that I'm not sure if model that I bought emits UV even in smallest quantity.

I know some people are saying that LED don't produce UV at all,but that's not completely true.

Some models do and some don't.

I read that phosphorus have role in producing UV when it comes to LED lights.

I tried to contact company that made LED strip I get but they didn't replied to me back.

I was hoping that you may know if this particular model produce any UV?

Model name is Optonica LED Strip 12V 2835 60 LEDs SKU:4703

I manage to find them in catalog and I made a screen shot so you don't have to bother searching for it.

I'll post it so you can see specifications.

Every help is more than welcome.

Are there any good “smart” explosive gas detectors?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 09:51 AM PST

I've looked around but most of the posts I found were a few years old. I'm wondering if anything has changed...

I'm looking for a WiFi enabled explosive gas detector to put near a gas fireplace in an air bnb rental. I'm worried about someone accidentally putting out the pilot light and leaving, so a non-connected alarm may not do my any good if no one is there to hear it.

    Thanks for any pointers!

Monitoring power consumption on U.S. split-phase loads?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 10:41 AM PST

I've got a submersible well pump in my family's summer house that runs directly (no receptacle) on split-phase (i.e. 2 hot 120v lines 180 degrees out-of-phase to achieve 240v). A typical Square-D pressure switch activates and deactivates the pump.

I'd like to figure out how to monitor the amperage through the load so that I can monitor it for atypical power usage when nobody's home all winter. i.e., if it starts running more often, there's probably a leak in the plumbing somewhere that urgently needs to be addressed.

Basically I want the arduino version of a clamp ammeter like this one https://www.amazon.com/Auto-ranging-Digital-Clamp-Meter/dp/B001VGND88

I'm trying to be minimally invasive, but I'm open to suggestions that involve putting something in-line as well.

Device number limits on wifi?? Is this why people use bridges?!??

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 03:24 PM PST

I've been using a lot of Gosund products like smart plugs and light strips to avoid buying a bridge... but now my internet is not allowing more devices... is this problem solved by bridges?

    Wash lighting from floor?

Hey folks - I'm tired of downlights in the ceiling and thinking about wash lighting from led strips on the floor. I'm looking for inspiration on how to install/mount them so they are nice and not janky, especially in daytime when they are not turned on. Any ideas? TIA!

Powering an electric gate away from mains?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 10:02 AM PST

    Hi all,

Do you have any tips on powering a driveway gate away from mains? Its about 20-30m from the house, kind of a standard metal swing farm gate.

I am not an electrician and don't want to mess around with mains supply or digging conduits, unless people think that's feasible for a noob?

What I was thinking is to counterweight the gate so that the power required to move it would be lower than actively moving the whole thing (its some work to open, but swings shut, so a counter could balance this), although this might mean it is very slow to open. I was then going to add an RPI for number plate recognition, and try to power off solar with a decent size battery pack.

Does this sound legit and has anyone done similar?

    Sonoff Mini S1/S2 wiring

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 05:16 PM PST

I'm pretty sure someone solved this problem before...

I have a 3 way in my kitchen and in my living room. Wiring diagram is like below. Red/Black travelers are connected to switches and carry current. How can I wire Sonoff Mini for S1&S2? (There are no Hot wire in the kitchen, either T1 or T2 is Hot depending on which switch is pressed)

     Light ^ +------------|--------------+ +---------------------------+ | | | | | | | | | T1 T2 | | | | | (Red) (Black) | | Comm | | \ / | | / \ | | \ / | | / \ | | Comm | | T1 T2 | | ^ | | (Red) (Black) | | | Hot | | | | | | +---------------------------+ +---------------------------+ Kitchen | Living room | +

One idea could be not wiring S1/S2 and leave them alone... But I'm not sure if this is a good idea??

Has anyone been successful with a fireplace flue damper sensor?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 09:22 AM PST

I want to be able to see if my fireplace flue damper is open or closed as it's always left open but very hard to see. I am wondering if any sensors would be up to the high temperature conditions of being installed in a fireplace flue. Any window sensor could work IF it could withstand the temps. Has anyone done this?

I'm looking for recommendations for companies that can do home tech buildouts

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 07:52 AM PST

I'm a tech idiot but want to create a gamer's paradise condo. Full Emersion. Lets say I have a 100 sq ft studio condo with separate bathroom. I want floor to ceiling video screen walls, full augmented reality, voice recognition, high speed internet, ... I don't know what else. Everything imaginable. Who could do it right? Would $50,000 do it?

Phillips Wiz Bulb...no light at all = bad bulb?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 04:12 PM PST

Picked up a phillips wiz bulb. Been trying to pair it but I can never get it to pulsate in pairing mode. That said, I can't even get it to turn on as a plain bulb. Looking at videos it looks like it should at least turn on as a plain bulb, eh? If it's not, fair to assume I got a dud? Or is there a way to reset it?

Replacing a dumb pool light controller

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 08:04 AM PST

Hey there, I have a dumb 433MHz remote switch for the LED lights in my pool (it's an older 1-channel version of this https://www.seamaid-lighting.com/en/produit/module-de-commande-radio/). The controller has stopped working and rather than replace it with another expensive dumb one I'd like to add it to my smart home, which is Google Assistant and Hubitat based.

The existing setup is pretty simple: it has 12VAC in and provides 12VAC out to the lights. That's it. The controller is a small PCB mounted in an IP55 box with a screw-on antenna sticking out the top. I figure I'll remove the existing PCB and replace it with a smart one.

There are approximately one jillion of these little PCBs on Amazon that all seem to be versions of the same thing that seems like what I need - some run on any voltage, some on low-voltage DC, some on low-voltage AC, many are labeled "Sonoff" but I suspect they're fakes. I think Wifi is going to reach out to the pool house better than Zigbee so that's a consideration.

Now for the question: what should I use? It doesn't look like Shelly makes anything suitable, though that would be my preference. Anyone have experience with these type of things?
