Kasa HS103 smart plugs not following schedule without internet access.

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 03:58 PM PST

Everywhere I've looked, all the threads say that the Kasa smart plugs will follow their assigned schedule without internet access once the schedule is set. After 36 hours without internet access in my house, I can tell you that this is NOT the case. At least it wasn't for me. Is it possible I'm doing it wrong?

    Threads like these: https://community.tp-link.com/us/home/forum/topic/170652

    https://www.reddit.com/r/homeautomation/comments/9ch3y4/does_tplink_smart_plug_scheduling_work_if_they/

Note: If internet fails, Schedule, Away and Timer mode will continue to run as programmed.

    https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/faq/947/

    Not based on my experience.

UPDATE: If you lose power at any point once the internet goes down, apparently, you're going to lose the scheduling also until you can get internet access back due to the loss of NTP.

    Net New Home Automation Project

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 12:57 PM PST

    Hi folks,

I'm looking to automate a small 600 sq ft condo apartment. The only smart components I have right now is an August lock and a few tuya based "Globe Electric" bulbs, and I use google home as my assistant.

I'm looking to implement smart roller shades for all my windows, Nest thermostat, smart light switches, and smart bulbs all around, and keep my August lock.

Originally I was looking to switch everything to Z-wave or Zigbee. However I'm reading that Z-wave is probably on it's way out, and given the small size of the apartment, I'm not sure Zigbee is really required. A simple wifi based system might be all I need, and I'm not overly concerned about cloud based security/privacy.

So for the light switches/bulbs, I'm thinking of sticking with tuya based bulbs/switches and run it through Smart Life app. I assume that if my internet were to go down, the smart functionality will be lost but that I can at least turn the bulbs on/off with the switches.

I'm not planning any over the top automation, out of the box functionality will probably be sufficient. But I do want to keep my options open for down the road and integrate with a smart hub. I have a 25/7 HTPC that I could run Home Assistant on, so that's likely the route I would take to dabble.

TLDR: Given the small condo size, are there any cons by going with Wifi Tuya based system versus Zigbee?

    Apartment automation

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 01:50 PM PST

I am looking to automate my next apartment, mostly looking at ring cameras and extra security, smart plugs, and some sort of home hub. I currently have a Google phone but my bf has an iPhone so I am trying to find out what system would be the best for us. Mostly between Google and Alexa. Does either integrate better with ring and the phones? Could it all be controlled through one app? Thank you for any advice!

Is there anyway to integrate Ring1 with Google Home Hub?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 12:35 PM PST

......I haven't found any way to connect these, wondering if anyone found a workaround.

I have a ring1 doorbell and a google home hub, what I wanted was to be able to get the video feed onto he GHH. If I replace the doorbell with Eufy, seems that would be workable solution.

Secondly, if I want my porch light to come on when someone rings the doorbell, whats the best way to automate that? thinking of getting a smart light switch, but not sure how to build the google routines to kick that off? Do I need IFTTT to do that? (If doorbell pressed then turn porch light on)

Thanks in advance for the tips and tricks you guys collectively rock!

Tuya Door Sensor not working with Alexa

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 06:22 PM PST

    Hey Everyone,

I recently brought a cheap door sensor off ali express which works with the Tuya app. Upon linking it to Alexa it picks up the contact sensor in the devices options but if you click into it then it states "there was a problem" I've tried doing voice commands which state "doesn't support that" errors despite using the commands told to me by the Alexa app and also it doesn't show up in routines although it still works through the Tuya app

Has anyone else ran into this and found a solution?

    Automate HVAC Mini-Splits

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 07:53 AM PST

Hi all- I'm learning a ton from you all, and hope you have some good advice for my next project.

We had six Daikin mini-splits installed for whole house heating and cooling. Daiken has a built-in in app and automation system which seems pretty good, but the frustrating part is that you need to install wi-fi modules on each unit. The kicker is that my HVAC installer (who was otherwise great and priced well) wants $400 per unit to provide and install the module. I can buy the same module online for $165, and installation is somewhat straightforward, but involves opening the whole evaporator unit and plugging things direct to the PCB. While I don't love the idea of opening the evaporators, spending $990 all in and doing some work is much more palatable than $2,400.

I can also buy a very similar looking unit with a very similar model number (BRP069B42 instead of BRP072A43) online for $65, which looks to be the part for the EU units. Might those two units be effectively the same? Spending $365 is far better than $990.

The other alternative is getting a third party solution that uses an IR controller, like Cielo or Sensibo. Does anyone have any experience with those? I don't love the idea of needing something handing on the wall in the unit's line of sight forever (and losing controls just because it gets covered). I also don't love the idea that one of these companies goes under and I lose my controls or investment.

    Any thoughts? Thanks in Advance!

Would you be willing to pay for a universal home automation echo system?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 07:40 PM PST

    Hello everyone!

My quarantine project is coming to a head and in its final stages! It's been suggested to me that there might be a market for it. I figured this was a great group to ask before I looked at taking it to market via Kickstarter or another platform.

I hope this doesn't break rule #6! I promise I'm just speaking feedback!

I was tired of having a bunch of different apps to control different aspects of my smart home and when my internet went out that my devices were regulated to basic status. I tried a few open source solutions but none of them were really what I was looking for.

My goal was to create an out of the box solution that anyone can set up, from my 60 year old mother, my 85 year old grand father or my 7 year old nephew. And was intuitive for all of them to be able to use.

What I have developed is basically a refined home assistant (not their code), that connects with most smart products (761 right now) in one app with an accompanying hub. This includes lights, locks, curtains, fans, switches, cameras, thermostats, alarms, Av receivers, tv's, fridges, sprinkler controllers and a bunch of other devices. I'm currently still working on expanding the control envelope!

Aside from the obvious controls it allows:

An admin user and regular users. The admin can assign room control to users like parent and a child's room.

A customizable main page that lets you put what's important to you right up front. No matter where it's located in the echo system. Want you baby monitor on your main page along with the thermostat and the controls for your living room? Easy Peezy! Want to see what's on the baby monitor full screen? Hold and press expand and it is now full window.

Each room has a tab with its controllable devices.

    Still 100% local.

In the future I plan on developing a wall plate replacement that would go into a standard double gang j box and would give the user a 7" touch screen for that specific room or a master screen available.

So my question to the group, if this product was available would you be interested in it? Would you back it on Kickstarter?

If you'd back it on kick started what are some of the rewards you would like to see and what would price point would make you say "ya that's worth it!"?

    Thanks everyone!

Schlage Keypad Lock Retrofit August Smart Lock

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 01:51 PM PST

I recently moved into a new apartment that uses the Schlage Camelot Keypad Lock. I don't have the option to replace it after talking with my landlord. I also have a V3 August Smart Lock that I would like to put on the deadbolt. When I opened up the Schlage lock, it looks like I can put the August Lock on, but it would look a bit ugly. I'm curious if anyone has come across a retrofit/conversion kit to attach the August. Thanks for any suggestions!

    Robot vacuum cleaner filter

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 04:56 AM PST

    Hi,

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask

I wanted to change the filter if my inselife E3 robot vacuum cleaner, but it's out of stock and there seems to be no place to buy these filters.

Also, I didn't find filters with the correct measurements (85mm30mm10mm) online.

Is there any other way to get such a filter or some DIY way?

Inovelli red series black colored switches?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 09:09 PM PST

Hi, I'm planning to buy a bunch of inovelli red series on/off and dimmer switches in black color since they go with the theme of the house I'm moving to. When I try to order them from their website, I see in the cart that I'm charged for the switch ($42) + black paddle ($5) for each switch I buy. Does this mean I get a regular white switch and a white wall plate and also a black paddle for every switch?

Help for hearing impaired parent waiting our first child?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 05:34 AM PST

Me and my wife are waiting our first child. My wife is hearing impaired. Not deaf, but has quite some trouble hearing without hearing aids for both ears.

We've been starting to think of solutions for sleep time, mainly that not just I will be able to react when our child wakes up crying during work nights when my wife is on her leave the first months. We both have lots of Apple devices, and we've been thinking of both vibrating solutions with the Apple Watch and/or flashing lights connected to baby monitor, if that's a possible solution.

Any suggestions on how we could solve this the best way possible so we'll be able to take care of our firstborn especially during nights without having to both wake up (me 🤣) to help our child?

Shelly 2.5 to work like Shelly i3

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 05:32 AM PST

    Hello,

I just installed another Shelly 2.3 in my house, but in this case, I wanted to do something a bit different.

The first channel of my Shelly connected to my bulb and to momentary switch as in input, but the second channel has no wired output, just a momentary switch input - I want it to be an MQTT trigger on a press of the switch, just like the i3 device (i1 to be more specific)

Is there any way to disable the output of this channel? which button type is the best for this case?
