LED light strips bright enough to replace fluorescent tubes Posted: 19 Feb 2021 01:57 PM PST In my living room I have vaulted ceilings with exposed beams, some of which have 48" fluorescent tubes on the top shining up at the ceiling. The result looks really good, but I wish I had something dimmable and ideally could tweak the color of the light, not crazy RGB, just adjust cool/warm to time of day. There are a bunch of LED strips on the market to do something like this, but I don't have a good sense of which ones look good (high CRI) and would be bright enough to replace fluorescent tubes. Anyone have suggestions? [link] [comments]
6" LED can trims with light adjustment BUT use normal dimmer? Posted: 19 Feb 2021 09:53 PM PST I changed out a handful of my cans and love that I can adjust light warmness manually, HOWEVER, I want the same setup but adjust my light color via Homeseer. Like to make my bathroom lights warm at night and 5000k during the day. Hue looks neat enough, but they won't work on a normal zwave dimmer. Have you guys come across any products? New Construction House Pre Wiring Posted: 19 Feb 2021 04:40 PM PST Hi all - was wondering if anyone wanted to help answer some questions I have as I get ready to pre wire this house.
Any other advice for pre wiring or anything else? Going to do this next week and close the walls soon after. Thanks a lot If anyone answers ! [link] [comments]
Modifying very old light switches for lighting control Posted: 19 Feb 2021 09:28 AM PST We've just moved into a very old house that hasn't been updated in an extremely long time. The whole house needs rewiring because the current wiring is a fire hazard. Because the house is of some historical significance we have to ensure that everything we do preserves the character of the house. Many of our light switches are similar to this My plan was to install a lighting system from Rako that uses wireless battery powered control panels and then attempt to modify some of our old fashioned light switches by hiding the guts of the Rako switches inside. This means less destructive rewiring of the old house and that we get to keep some of these period light switches and use them safely. Just wondering if this is the best way of attacking this or are there more cost-effective solutions? If anyone's modified some old switches with wireless control I'd love to hear about it [link] [comments]

Anyone used the Brilliant.tech switches? Posted: 19 Feb 2021 01:32 PM PST I like the marketing, but I'd love real world feedback. I have hue lights and google mini's, pluse home assistant w/ nodered. [link] [comments]
Automating Venetian blinds - UK Posted: 20 Feb 2021 12:33 AM PST I'm looking to install Venetian blinds in the entire house and am looking for a solution where the blinds can be automated/set on schedule. I've looked at Somfy but they're quite expensive for a full house install. Wondering if there are any other options out there. I have also looked at Soma Tilt but the motors are quite large and would be on display everywhere around the house. Further to my issue is that I have 2 bay windows comprised of 6 individual panes (so the bay is quite circular) - this means whatever I get I will need at least 12 motors just for these 2 windows alone. Any help and advice is appreciated. I'm based in the UK. [link] [comments]

Just lookign for ideas. i have smartthings and google ecosystem. any clever suggestions? right now we have a fork balancing on her door handle [link] [comments]
Has anybody figured out how to re-flash Kangaroo sensors? Posted: 19 Feb 2021 07:26 PM PST Does anyone know how to reflash any of the Kangaroo sensors to use with homekit? I bought their security system and few more of the Kangaroo sensors, both motion and door ones. I tried out their security system and I couldn't get it to not false trigger with the sensors ( though, that could easily be because of how they'd have to be placed to work as an alarm.). So it just doesn't work for me. It was an expensive lesson. I wasted a chunk of $$. But to liked the design of the sensors and since they are supposedly ESP based, I would love to find a way to reflash them so I could flash them with homekit compatible ESP sw. Has anyone actually figured out how to reflash them? ( at this point I'm not going to recover any of the $$, so willing to experiment some. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]

Smart sensor for crawl space water intrusion Posted: 19 Feb 2021 10:05 AM PST We have a crawl space which previously had water intrusion problems, though we wren't able to pin down exactly what caused the water (poor downspouts? foundation issues? leaks through gutters/walls?) We think we probably fixed the issue but need to continue to monitor the situation for water or high humidity. I'm looking for something that will give me a graph of humidity over time as well as alerts for humidity past a certain threshold or actual water detected. Should be able to be put in an unconditioned, muddy crawl space. [link] [comments]
Complete Newbie looking for some starter recommendations. Posted: 19 Feb 2021 06:16 PM PST Hey everyone. I'm new here and looking for some beginner recommendations. I live in an apartment and am a single mom. What I'm starting with: - samsung smart tv with smart things -samsung tv with google chromecast - one echo dot - google mini What I am aiming to do: -1. Wake up routine: lightbulb fade on, curtains open, coffee brews, weather forecast and calenders 2. Kids bedtime routine: turn off kids light, close curtains, turn on nightlight (above doorway?), Play sleep sounds 3. Time to relax: lights off, bedroom lights dim, tv on 4. My bedtime: lights off door locks 5. Going to work: lights off, 65 thermo, curtains close, door locks 6. Motions sensor ambiant lights But I think maybe just lights on and coffee in the morning and locking the door and turning lights off for work and bedtime is probably a good start. I'm limited in funds and haven't created routines like this before so I'm lost at where to begin. [link] [comments]

Control ikea lightning, Somfy io blinds and danalock with one hub? Posted: 19 Feb 2021 02:42 PM PST Hello. I want to use only ine hub to control all devices...if its possible :) I have ikea lightning controlled with ikea trådfri dimmer (zigbee). The blinds on the window is Somfy IO The doorlock is danalock zigbee. Possible to control all this with one hub? [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Feb 2021 02:22 PM PST USA/Home Assistant/Rpi/z-wave pretty much defines my network. I can support Zigbee as well. I have just bought a couch that now has to be several inches from the wall based on the current cord situation in the outlet behind it. The outlet currently is your standard 3-prong US-style double outlet. First problem: I'd like to get three (3) thingies plugged in (phone, yes, real phone; roomba; air purifier... you know, so y'all go the deets on how I roll). Maybe, just maybe, I could get away with two thingies. But even if I plug in just two things directly into the outlets, they extend further from the wall than I'd like. Second, a very good nice-to-have: I figured as I'm already going to find a way to thin out this plug/outlet thing for the couch, I might as well consider a smart outlet. Does anyone make smart outlets that let you plug in from the side (along the wall) instead of 90 degrees from the wall, right into the room? Ideas anyone? [link] [comments]
Please help me solve this "simple" (?!?) automation puzzle, which has me flummoxed! Posted: 19 Feb 2021 07:37 AM PST First, please forgive me if this is the wrong subreddit for my question. Since I have various hardware/software devices running, I'm unsure "who's doing what to whom". I am running Homebridge, google home, the eve app, Wyze sensors, and Smartlife-compatible RGB bulbs, etc. I have sometimes used IFTTT. Please let me tell you what I have been trying to do, and where I have semi-succeeded. I am an older guy who frequently forgets to check all the (many) windows and doors at/before bedtime to make sure they're closed (really it's mostly a window issue in this big old house with no central AC). We have a table lamp in the central hallway of the house that I have to walk past to go upstairs. It's a dark hallway at night and the light needs to be bright and white. We always have that lamp turned on in the evening and it's the last thing to be turned off when we head upstairs to bed. Now, I can ask Google, "Are windows or doors open"? And Google will reply, telling me which windows or doors (sensors) are open, or closed. That is amazing and helpful, but I have to remember to ask ! So I thought, what if I made an automation that would poll ALL the window and door contact sensors and if ANY sensors are open, would turn that lamp bulb from white to amber, or red, to alert me to go check the "usual suspects" windows/doors. I have been trying all kinds of automations with the Eve app and most have failed. I finally succeeded with a time-based Eve automation that polls the sensors at 9 pm and turns my generic (Airlux) RGB bulb red if any of them are open. I'm proud of at least that small accomplishment. But I really need that bulb to be normally white unless a sensor is open. Perhaps more importantly, I need the automation to keep check / poll the sensors constantly or frequently and to change the color of the bulb accordingly, rather than at just one time every evening. Complicating this more, most software tools seem only willing to report when an event takes place (sensor has been opened or closed) but I need the tool to report on the current status of the sensor (it's open, or it's closed). Google apparently can do this, and the Eve app. I'm frustrated and would appreciate any help! [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Feb 2021 06:59 AM PST So I shower every morning before work, and have a simple on/off towel heater in the bathroom. I turn it on when I get up so by the time I shower it's warm, but it's not dry by the time I leave the house. I'd like to have it plugged into a smart plug that automatically turns it on 15 minutes before I get up, and 2-4 hours after I finish my shower. Would be for electricity consumption and safety reasons. Is there any reason to be worried about the safety of this in a bathroom? Thinking about humidity, the amount of power being drawn, etc. Would it be safer to just leave it on all day? At work now, not sure what the specs on the heater is. Will check when I get home. Will this smart switch work for my ventilation ‘boost’ mode switch? I’m a tad stuck! Posted: 19 Feb 2021 05:20 AM PST Hi guys :) sorry in advance for a 'not-very-detailed' question but I'm hoping someone might be able to have a quick answer (even if it's a no!) or be able to help out. I'm by no ones measure an expert with this kind of stuff, but have managed to replace a few of my traditional light switches with smart switches so far. This original switch isn't for a light, but switches between a standard 'fan' mode and a more powerful 'boost' mode for my extractor/ventilation system (Vectaire Aera) in my flat. Original Switch (Front) Original Switch (Back) I always forget to turn it on or off at particular times e.g. on when showering, off again when I head out. So I was hoping to pop a smart switch in its place so I can still use traditionally but also set schedules and countdown timers e.g. turn on in the morning for a shower and turn off an hour later. Will this new smart switch switch work, and any idea which wires should go where? New Switch (Back) New Switch (Amazon) It isn't as simple as on/off (it's boost and not boost), but I thought it might work and I'm stuck. It's worth mentioning the green and yellow wire (earth?) wasn't screwed into the original switch at all. Sorry if this is dumb, but thanks so much in advance for any and all support! Best way to automate a 2-switch, 3-outlet circuit with no neutrals in the switchboxes? Posted: 19 Feb 2021 08:21 AM PST Hi, apologies in advance, this is a bit of a complicated one! Our living room has 3 outlets which have top plugs controlled by 2 switches (one on either side of the room), which we've been using to plug in lamps. I've been hoping to replace both switches with smart switches so that we can turn our lamps on and off while we're away. Unfortunately, neither of the switch boxes have neutral wires. The white wires are being used as travelers in both boxes. My first thought was to use the Lutron dimmer switches (with one of them being a wall-mounted Pico remote), but everything I'm reading is saying that using dimming switches for standard outlets is against NEC. At this point, I feel like I have two options:
Both the first and second options feel pretty expensive for just trying to automate a couple lamps and the third option feels limiting since we lose plugs that we could be using for other things like phone chargers, etc. Has anyone dealt with a similar setup? Are there any obvious other options that I'm missing? [link] [comments]
UK Zigbee Smart Switches that fail to manual? Posted: 19 Feb 2021 08:12 AM PST I am planning to get some zigbee smart bulbs (TRADFRI) with a DIY zigbee hub. In order to get wife and family approval these will have to be operable by physical switches when desired. I know that much of technology is unreliable and especially so when I cant stop tinkering with it. Are there zigbee switches that can replace physical UK (live wire only) switches that have an analog fail mode. Said another way, if the zigbee connection fails then the switch detects this and acts a a true physical switch, breaking the circuit and turning off the bulb. [link] [comments]
