Issue after lightening storm - POE cameras

    Posted: 18 Feb 2021 02:57 PM PST

We had a major lightening storm early this morning. I'm running a UniFi USG & POE switch, Reolink cameras, and BlueIris on a dedicated server (also with HomeSeer HS4, but not linked to BI). The entire system pretty much crashed, which I was able to get up and running (mostly). Two of my six cameras are not working, however when I plug them directly into the switch they function normally. I tested the cable (Cat6A) with a cheapo tester (only tests continuity) and it tested fine. Also tested the patch cable. Does anybody have any ideas what could possibly be causing the issue?

I apologize if I'm omitting any important details. Thank you in advance!

Found my GE Concord 4 Security System Installer Code

    Posted: 18 Feb 2021 05:38 AM PST

I am planning on integrating the Interlogix SuperBus 2000 RS-232 module into my system so I can automate via the Concord integration in HomeAssistant.

While not always necessary, it is recommended to have and know the installer code to the alarm system (which is different than the master codes). In most cases, this is not needed, but for whatever reason, if I am unable to ACK the messages on the RS-232, I'll need to remove the module from the bus (to stop the panel beeping). This can only be done via the installer code.

Here is the rub..I do not know the installer code, nor am I interested in pulling the EPROM and reading it directly. My system is still centrally monitored by a home security company, and I would like to keep it that way

I tried all of the default installer codes that I could find on the internet, but none of them worked. I had an idea that the installer code might be something specific to my account, my serial numbers, etc. I pulled out all of the old paperwork that I have from the installs and maintenance, and wrote down the account numbers, site numbers, etc from the work orders, then tried the starting 4 and ending 4 digits of each of these. To my surprise, the installer code was the last 4 digits of my customer number.

Hope this helps someone else looking to find their installer code.

Best robo vac to shuffle weekly between carpeted upstairs and hardwood downstairs?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2021 12:03 PM PST

Looking for something we can use on both floors without much hassle. I realize we will have to move the charger to the floor its on but that's not an issue. We have never used any robo vacs so we're complete noobs. Do they have different height settings like a normal vacuum?

We are hoping to spend less than 300 and not expecting it to replace actual vacuuming and mopping, just further the interval between them.

    Thanks!

    Discord for Home Automation/Smart Home

    Posted: 18 Feb 2021 03:11 PM PST

Hello all! I'm conducting a poll to see how many people would want a home automation/smart home discord server to hang with fellow smart homers. If you don't think that r/homeautomation should have a discord, let me know why in the comments. I think if the mods decide to make a discord server, it would need to be heavily categorized and heavily moderated. (Maybe verified email?) Also, think the subreddit should be used for mainly asking questions and the discord just to chat as many questions will probably get overlooked. Thanks. Looking forward to your responses! Mods please take note if the response is high. Lol! Link to the poll: StrawPoll link

Is anyone educated in Physics, lol? Wondering if the 360 s5 can take a 14.8V battery instead of a 14.4V battery. Not sure if the 0.4V difference is significant.

    Buoy water monitor/meter/shutoff is discontinued

    Posted: 18 Feb 2021 12:46 PM PST

It sounds like the Buoy water monitor/meter/shutoff is being discontinued.

    https://www.santacruztechbeat.com/2021/02/18/the-end-of-the-buoy-story/

Has anyone opened one of these up? I'm hoping I can reprogram it to log my data somewhere else. I might not get all the data and analysis of the original product, but I should be able to do _something_.

Maybe just sending MQTT would be enough?

    NEST/HIVE alternatives??

    Posted: 18 Feb 2021 05:38 PM PST

    Hey All

I am looking for a wifi based control system for my hot water and central heating via my gas boiler.

I have looked at Nest and Hive Active, both are good but require a working internet connection. Is anyone aware of something similar but which doesn't need an internet connection to work?

Ideally it connects via wifi but I dont quite fancy plugging my central heating to the internet, I rather control my schedules etc via wifi on my own network and not have it exposed to the net or at the mercy of services changing or shutting down in the future.

If you have any suggestions please do share :-)

    Many thanks!

Which smart home hub do you prefer & why?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2021 08:47 PM PST

Currently using Smartthings V3, but limited with local automations if a device is using a custom handler. Looking to try another hub with a nice user interface.

Pros and Cons will help others like myself decide which hub is best to choose from.

    Smartthings V3

    Pros:

Clean and Interactive User Interface - Organize by rooms - Nice icons and visuals - Tiles to control devices with a touch

Quick and easy setup - Scan QR or Find nearby devices to pair

    Many compatible devices

Cons: - Limited local automations - Some devices require custom handlers for advanced settings - Most automations run from the cloud so they require a internet connection

If you're using another hub not listed in the list feel free to comment your suggestion and recommendations in the comments. Thank you all!

Simple way to turn on multiple plug in lights off wall switch

    Posted: 18 Feb 2021 06:17 PM PST

I just moved into an apartment. I only plan to stay for around 6 months, so I don't want to deal with anything too complicated. The living room doesn't have any overhead lights. The switch near the door enables an outlet near the door. One light doesn't give off enough for the size of the room.

I'm looking for suggestions on how I might be able to enable lights plugged into other outlets to also turn on when I turn the switch on.

I don't have any other smart devices/hubs, but I do have two Amazon Echo Flexes that I bought on sale. I'm open to something else, but don't really want to invest too much in infrastructure since this is not a long-term home. I don't want to use an extension cord, since the cord would pretty much have to cross the room.

Z-Wave Dual Outlet Switch with Power usage meter

    Posted: 18 Feb 2021 07:09 AM PST

Hope everyone is doing well. I'm looking to run a local automation on my router and modem to restart every night and I would like to monitor how much power throughout the day the modem and router are taking. It would be best if this can be done on one dual outlet where I can connect both the modem and router.

Any recommendations or suggestions would be highly appreciated. Thanks!

Sonoff Basic - or something else working as Normally Closed relay?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2021 06:59 AM PST

Sonoff basic is a "smart switch" with a normally open relay.

Today i installed one Sonoff to a ceiling dome light, to be able to turn it off from sofa, but still could use the light normally with the original wall switch. I just installed L and N wires leading to lamp to input and took the wires to lamp from output. It works, but has it's caveats.

This setup has 2 problems:- when i turn on the light, it takes about 5sec for the firmware(espEasy mega) to boot up, subscribe to MQTT topic with a retained state and turn the light on(if the state is left to "on")
    - possible wifi outage causes light not being able to turn on at all from wall switch

Everything would be better if sonoff basic was a "normally closed" relay, so when AC power is turned on the lamp would light up instantly and if wifi was out, i couldn't turn it off remotely.

Any ideas about modding this, or recommendations on other relay units?

What are my smart options for very long 30ft horizontal curtain travel? Curious to see how many motors I would need.

    Posted: 18 Feb 2021 11:19 AM PST

I have a Florida room with a massive 30 ft wall of windows. There are no obstructions between windows. I don't expect one motor to cover it all but if I could get away with 2 or 4 it would be nice.

how to automate motor speed controller

    Posted: 18 Feb 2021 01:40 AM PST

I've got an inline duct fan that currently uses a variable speed motor controller like this one. Most of the time I like it set to medium (when one duct is closed), but when both ducts are open, I want it set to full power. The ducts open via a 24v trigger that control motorized dampers.

How can I adjust the speeds based on the presence of a 24v trigger? Or is there another "2 stage" fan motor controller that I can use?

    Zooz in-wall scene controller?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2021 05:13 AM PST

I swear a few days ago I saw an announcement for a zooz in-wall scene controller but now for the life of me I cannot find it. It was 5 button, with one large button on top and four smaller ones on the bottom. I thought it was on Twitter but I can't find it on their feed, website or store site.

Did I confuse it with a different manufacturer, is my google-fu failing, or has it been deleted?

Robot Vacuum at Bed Bath and Beyond

    Posted: 18 Feb 2021 03:36 AM PST

I have a few hundred dollars in gift cards for Bed Bath and Beyond and I think I'm going to use them for a new robot vacuum. I can also spend a couple hundred more if need be.

My floors are primarily hardwood with one area rug and I have a long haired German Shepherd, so there is always a lot of hair.

Which vacuum do you think would be best?
