Flashing Tuya firmware via serial help

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 01:14 PM PST

I'm trying to flash my Treatlife Outdoor Smart Dimmer and I can see that it has been done successfully at https://templates.blakadder.com/treatlife_DP10.html . The kind gentlemen even mentions how to bypass the MCU.

All was fine until I actually opened it up. I have a typical solder iron and typical hobby skills - not a god, but not a glooper either. However, THIS fucker just looks way too small.

Airpod for scale, I'd need to solder the small IC (Nuvoton), the 5th pin from the bottom on the left: https://imgur.com/a/qsqiQwJ

Any tips? I can't see myself doing this successfully with the tools and skills I have.

And before you folks suggest doing this wirelessly - I've tried, but TuyaConvert reports my firmware is too new and has patched the exploit that allowed the OTA firmware hack.

    Touch screen “toucher” for washer/dryer

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 02:48 PM PST

This is probably a long shot, but I use the SDGE time-of-use electricity plan and am looking for something to turn on my washer/dryer after midnight. That way it's done with it's cycle once I wake up in the morning. Electricity is cheaper between midnight and 6 am on week days. I have a newer whirlpool washer and dryer but there is no time delay built in. I was looking for some sort of device to "touch" the touchscreen or trick the touch screen to thinking there is an input so I can turn it on after midnight and not have to stay up that late.

Free Private Brokers for MQTT [POST APPROVED BY MODS]

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 03:08 PM PST

    Hi Everyone!

Some of my friends and I recently made a web app for developers to create free private MQTT brokers, and we're looking for any ideas and constructive criticism on the platform we developed. Recently in college, we all took an Embedded Systems Design class that involved private MQTT brokers; however, all of the private broker services online are currently paid, so we decided to make a free version for students and developers. If you would like to check it out, feel free to Google AirMQTT or visit our site at https://airmqtt.com. Also, if you have used and enjoyed this service, we'd be greatly appreciative for any donations as we hope to maintain this as a free service for the future. Please let us know if you have any questions!

What kind of switch for fan/light

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 10:39 PM PST

Standard ceiling fan with a light and 2 lil pullstrings on a single pole switch. So right now I just have a smart bulb in there, but how could I possibly control my fan? If I did a switch it would affect the voltage of the light as well, the only thing I can thing of is some sort of module hardwired into the fan, Or do I just have to trash it and buy a new one?

I've got an old laptop and a spare 2 TB SSD. Should I install the SSD to the laptop or hook up the SSD to my router for a home server?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 07:04 PM PST

I have a laptop that I would otherwise not use because I have a newer machine and a tablet. The laptop is a Lenovo T540P. I have a 2TB samsung ssd that would fit inside the device should I want to upgrade it. I could transfer the Windows copy over OR install Linux on it and make it a multi-purpose Linux PC. I could also make it a home server for storing any and all kinds of files on it. Does Reddit have any suggestions for which is more useful?

What is best programmable thermostat to reduce energy cost?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 12:30 PM PST

I am hoping to upgrade my dumb thermostats to programmable thermostats and, while I want them to be user-friendly, I don't want to be inundated with features I won't use. Ideally, I want the thermostat to have an app to control them by and to auto turn up or down based on time of day. What are my best options?

    Help with shelly wiring please

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 06:14 PM PST

I have one of those fan light combos that is operated by one switch. I have a shelly 2.5 and a shelly 1L.

I planned on using one of them as a way to control both independently (don't care about fan speed). The plan is to install it in the fan sconce(?), the house wire as input and 2 outputs 1 to fan and 1 to light.

Which one of the shellys 2.5 or 1L can be used to achieve this?

    TIA

Yeelight Lightstrip Plus VS Govee WiFi LED Smart RGB LED strip

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 02:57 PM PST

    Hey everyone!

I don't know if this is the right place to ask for help on this subject but I'll post this anyway.

So, I am planning on installing a 10m Smart LED RGB lightstrip on my bedroom ceiling and I'm on kinda of a low budget, so, according to my needs and after some research I have narrowed my options down to two contenders:

    • Yeelight Lightstrip Plus (2m starter kit + 2x4m extensions) ~40€
    • Govee WiFi LED Smart RGB LED strip (10m / 32.8ft version) ~90€

As I've never installed or used any sort of led strip I don't know what to look for in a good strip, and so far I haven't been able to find a direct comparison between the two items.

So what I'd like to hear your opinions on this subject so I can choose the best item between these two, or, alternativly, find a better contender.

    Smart 'button' for lamp automation?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 02:47 AM PST

I'm chasing a solution for a smart switch style button that I can temporarily mount in my bedroom. All the smart switches I've come across require hard wiring which I don't think will solve what I'm trying to do. I'd like this button to activate two lamps to help my wife getting up at night to feed our baby.

I'm envisioning something like a garage door opener style button, battery operated and temporary/portable.

If anyone has any other ideas that don't require using a phone/Google assistant to turn on, I'm interested.

    I'm in Australia. Cheers

How to set up *continuous* motion detection?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 02:05 AM PST

So I would like to switch on the lights in the hallway when motion occurs. Easy. But: When remaining there long enough, the lights go off even though my entire family is getting dressed, in front of the motion sensor. And its not like the lights would go on immediately after being switched off. The motion sensor seems to sensor motion only after a minute or two, if at all, while we are dancing in front of it.

Similar scenario will occur in basically any other scenario where one remains and moves long and enough to trigger the sensor initially (like bathroom, kitchen, garage, etc.)

I am using IKEAs tradfri indoor motion sensor via Phoscons Conbee II via Homebridge-Hue Plugin via Homebridge, as well as Boschs motion sensor, also in HomeKit. I simply set the lights to switch on when motion occurs and off when "no motion" is detected. How should I alter my setup to continually check for motion, after motion has been detected?

    Switchbot PI3 range?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 08:20 AM PST

Has anyone used Switchbot with a PI3 for the Bluetooth and can give me an idea on range?

Alternatively, can anyone recommend a Bluetooth adaptor with good range that works with switchbot?

Context: I have a reset button to push on a boiler 100 miles away, but I have a pi in a cupboard 10m and 4 walls away, and if required I could run a long usb cable to within 2m in the ceiling void if it's totally nessescary.
