Make Raspberry pi detect when I enter the room Posted: 27 Feb 2021 05:21 PM PST In my office I have several lights I also have a raspberry pi zero W I saw somewhere that you would be able to do room presents with the Bluetooth in your phone can someone point me in the direction of that guide I just simply want the lights to turn on and off as I leave the room when my phone is in my pocket. Or did I miss understand everything [link] [comments]
Recovering abandoned Honeywell sensors for ST Use Posted: 27 Feb 2021 07:13 PM PST Moving into a new house, I thought it had a full security system, but it turns out the system (a Vista 15p board) hasn't seen use in years. I'd like to recover the motion sensors, door sensor, alarm siren, and 2 keypads (or just the wiring to them?) for a Konnected.io board or alternate, bonus would be to integrate the wired smoke detectors. I have questions

Posted: 27 Feb 2021 06:12 PM PST Trying to decide between a Google (Nest?), Echo, or HomePod smart device for my apartment. I have an eero wifi system as well as a Ring alarm which are both under the Amazon umbrella but I've heard great things about Google Assistant. I also use an Nvidia Shield and an iPhone so I have a hodgepodge of devices. Any input is much appreciated, and if you can please specify which device you recommend to use with the voice commands (i.e Echo, Echo Dot, Nest Home, etc) I'd appreciate it. [link] [comments]
Scheduled battery charging? Is it worthwhile? Posted: 27 Feb 2021 12:08 PM PST I have a bunch of lithium ion batteries around the house. Lawnmower, power tools, vacumes etc. I'm debating is it worthwhile putting them on timers via kasa smartpugs. Is it better for the batteries than just leaving them on an active plug all the time? Do I save anything by charging off peak? Am I just wasting my time? [link] [comments]
Home energy monitor and *logger* for power outages? Posted: 27 Feb 2021 09:42 AM PST I would like some sort of log generator specifically for how often power goes out, to our home. I already have two different types of power monitors in the sense of, how much power is used over time. But they do not account for when power is out, per se; only how much has been used. They're useless for downtime unless you carefully comb their records (which also assumes they didn't lose info because of it). Our local utility keeps cutting out several times a month. Usually only for a second - just enough to make my PC reboot and lose everything I had up, grrr. I'd like a good record of how often this happens but it's a lot of work to make notes every time I notice, plus I could easily miss ones (asleep or away). The logger would::
It could also have power monitoring capabilities built in, such as detecting brownouts or whatever. But that's less important to me than simply having a solid record of how often our house's power is up or down. If I search on "power monitoring", it only brings up a gazillion devices that track usage over time. Home Automation isn't exactly the right place to ask this, but it's the closest I could find. Any ideas? [link] [comments]
Homeseer cameras for nanny cams? Posted: 27 Feb 2021 01:28 PM PST Has anyone used the homeseer cameras yet? I'm looking to add a few around the house as nanny cams. I understand that I'd have to add a separate motion sensor to activate the recording, but I'm not sure if there's a lag when doing that.
I looked at Blue Iris, but that seems really costly as I don't have a spare PC I can run it on. I also looked at Unifi, but you can't get their inexpensive cameras right now due to demand, so dropping the money on a dream machine doesn't seem worth it for just this. The big things for me are reliability, local storage, ease of reviewing clips, and not terrible quality... probably looking at 5 indoor cameras. [link] [comments]

Posted: 27 Feb 2021 03:31 AM PST Hi there! TL:DR Would like to control individual radiator valves by setting target temperature, and using external temperature sensor, all running locally. Intro I have scoured the forum as I am looking into changing temperature control in my house. My guess is this type of post must be getting old, so I do apologize in advance. Some time ago I used Tado's thermostatic radiator valves in an apartment, and it worked great. But the cloud-based control is just moronic, although not unusual, I am having the exact same problem with robot vacuum cleaners. (doing some overhaul to have a more autonomous house, i.e., temperature, vacuum, and airing out by opening windows) Anyways, I am having a hard time finding any consensus on possible solutions (perhaps due to the insane amount of available product) and it is also quite possible I have overlooked the simplest solutions. Use case and question. Basically, I would just like for, let us say TRV 1 and TRV 2 to react to temperature reading from external sensor. So set a target temperature in the individual rooms and have the TRV open/close to accomplish this. All don locally. Sure, open window detection and such would be nice but not necessary. I have a Raspberry Pi 4 and ConBee II, planning on getting the Aeotec Gen 5+ Stick (aware of the Pi4 issues and new version) for maximizing options. No current running Home Assistant as I am starting from a clean plate (and it has been a while, so have to get into it again) Just to clarify, I could easily just use the Tado's I already have – this is just to "improve" and getting rid of bridge. Have a nice weekend! [link] [comments]
Google Home refusing commands because it can’t recognize my voice, but it shows my picture. Posted: 27 Feb 2021 07:11 AM PST Pretty much title. I'm getting really frustrated with my Google Home Hub. For an assistant, she's pretty fucking insolent. I will issue a simple command like "Hey google, remind me in 2 hours to change over the laundry." The speech to text shows that she hears me just fine, AND she displays a picture of my Gmail profile pic - as opposed to my wife's, which appears when my wife issues a command - and yet she will declare that she can't do it, because "I couldn't recognize your voice, check your Voice Match settings." If you don't know who's fucking talking, how are you showing me their picture? Seems like I wasted $100. [link] [comments]
Arlo vs Nest outdoor security camera? Posted: 27 Feb 2021 12:28 PM PST We are about to buy a set of outdoor security cameras for our house. I believe we're getting four. We're looking at the Arlo system and the Nest. We don't have a home security system at this particular house (though we may get one soon), or any special concerns, just want to keep an eye on the somewhat remote property to see who comes and goes esp when we aren't there, and occasionally see what critters stop by. Budget isn't our first concern but we aren't looking for a super high end military grade system. Ease of setup is important (though we're having it installed by an electrician); our wifi is not always great though it's fast and robust when it works (Xfiinity) and we hope to improve what's not great about it. Long story short we were about to pull the trigger on two Nest IQ outdoor cams and two regular Nest outdoor cams. Then after noticing that Nest/Google was discontinuing the IQ and these were sold out in many places, we wondered if it weren't unwise to purchase something that may be without support soon. Should we avoid these Nest cams at this point or just the IQ? Anyway, we started looking at the Arlo system. Between the Arlo pro 4 spotlight and Arlo Ultra, the Arlo Pro 2 Smart Camera (+ base station? do we need the base station?), and the Arlo Pro 3, which of them are comparable to the Nest models mentioned above, respectively. What are pros and cons, and which would you knowledgeable redditors reccomend? Many thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 27 Feb 2021 06:47 AM PST Just had the Hive thermostat installation today, however when trying to find the device on the Hive Android app, its unable to find it. The hive hub flashes yellow/orange to indicate its searching for device's, however it cannot find it. Anyone else been in a similar situation that can help? [link] [comments]
I want to get a quality hub. What about Vera? Posted: 27 Feb 2021 07:59 AM PST Looking at this after writing, I got long-winded. TL;DR at the bottom. I am currently only relying on Amazon Alexa; which is kind of a joke (strongly worded?) for a hub if you want fully customizable automation spanning multiple protocols. I am just fine with utilizing my Alexa devices for voice control but I want a more robust hub to allow me full control. About a year and a half ago I was going to pick up a Vera but never pulled the trigger. Now that I'm looking again, it seems they've kind of fallen a bit into the obscure. I am more than willing to do the configuration and programming on whatever I get. I just want flexibility, security, and customization. Also, anything that doesn't "phone home" with all my information all the time is a plus. Please hit me with your recommendations and reasons. Or just tickle my confirmation bias by telling me Vera is still the way to go, haha. TL;DR - Looking for a secure, flexible, customizable hub that appreciates privacy for someone willing to do the tech work. [link] [comments]
