Posted: 28 Feb 2021 10:18 AM PST While browsing Ali Express, I found a few stores selling those ubiquitous indicator/stack-lights that are used everywhere in factories to indicate the status of some machine or process. I don't have any big machines in my apartment, but I certainly do have a bunch of containers and servers running on my network. I designed a simple PCB meant to connect a cheap ESP32 module to some basic drive electronics to control a stack light. You can't beat the simplicity of one cable - directly into the network switch - for power and data, so I designed the whole thing around PoE, but that's not a hard requirement. I am currently using this to indicate several different things w/r/t the state of my home lab and network. Some of the indications are driven via Home Assistant automations, but others are controlled via small scripts/binaries that live on hosts outside of my Kubernetes cluster. All the files and build instructions can be found here. [link] [comments]

Video Doorbell - help me find one that fits our needs. Posted: 28 Feb 2021 06:10 PM PST Looking for a video doorbell that is wireless (will be install on vinyl siding if that matters) and no subscription. I don't want another bill every month. Local storage is fine with us, whatever is free). We have WiFi of course. I would like to (if possible) install other cameras inside on the same system that can also be monitored on my phone while away. Can someone guide me in the right direction. I know what I want but where do I start? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Feb 2021 07:57 PM PST I have the LEGELITE LED Smart Light Bulb, and the app they use (Smart Life) to control the lights is horrible. It takes forever to make rules and it is hard to work colors into that. Is there a better app / computer program to use? [link] [comments]
Recommended Whole House Lighting System? Posted: 28 Feb 2021 05:07 PM PST Recently moving into my first house and I'm trying to find the best lighting system and replace all of the current bulbs with this system. My kitchen is currently controlled by Lutron Caseta dimmers that is connected to my Smartthings Hub. My dining room and living room all have standard bulbs sockets, and I'd like to be able to adjust them (dimming and color temperature) as needed. Main features I'm looking for:
Does this system exist? It seems like the list of smartthings compatible bulbs isnt too large, and once I add in the constraints of being dimmable, tunable white or color, 100W options, etc that there doesn't seem to be any good options. Ikea might fit this bill, but I'm not sure how reliable they work with Smartthings. [link] [comments]

Use Sengled App with SmartThings Hub? Posted: 28 Feb 2021 09:28 PM PST My tunable white Sengled zig bee lights set up with SmartThings hub easily, but I'm a bit disappointed with the clunky controls in SmartThings. I can't change the color of all bulbs in one group at a time, and when I change the dimmer level of a group, it lags and jumps to another dim setting. The Sengled app looks like a better layout, can I use the Sengled app and my SmartThings hub to control the bulbs? I can't get the SmartThings hub to be detected in their app. [link] [comments]

Examples and discussion of data logging for APC PowerChute or other UPSs? Posted: 28 Feb 2021 06:30 AM PST I'm looking for a device that can log when power goes down for me... we have a goofy utility here and I'd like an easy way to see how often it does this over time. In another thread on this /sr, I asked in a general way, and several people said some UPSs can do this, including the APC PowerChute. So I've made this new post to ask specifically about this. I tried looking at the APC info on their PowerChute software, but it doesn't have anything on this. It doesn't even mention that it has data logging. Can someone show examples of data logs by UPSs, or point to sites that show log info? I'd like to see how fine their granularity is. Good screen captures or actual data are best. Some questions I'm trying to have answered:
My ultimate goal is to look back over the past, say, 3 years, and be able to easily chart just when, and for how long, power was out. Can this log really do that, even if only checked once a year? (Will it do it passively in the "background" without any need for user intervention?) How long of a log can it keep (how many rows)? Is it preserved even if the UPS loses all power? Etc. Thanks if you can help! [link] [comments]
How to Calculate Smart LED Downlight Size & Quantity? Posted: 28 Feb 2021 12:45 PM PST We're building out a 24x14 family room. We want to use the new smart recessed LED downlights. I'm think of the ones that dim, change temp and are controlled individually. Placing them evenly across the ceiling. Then create groups in the hub. But, how do I calculate the location, size, brightness, number etc? [link] [comments]
MyQ and Ryobi garage door opener not connecting Posted: 28 Feb 2021 09:20 AM PST I can't seem to find anything online to help with this so thought I would ask here. Just as the title says my ryobi garage door opener won't connect to the MyQ garage hub. Anyone run into this issue before and know how to solve it? Or know a product that does work with the ryobi? Smart thermostat for both line-voltage and IR/minisplit Posted: 28 Feb 2021 01:42 PM PST My house is about 20 years old and originally had line voltage forced-air convectors with a wall thermostat in each room for heating. The previous owner added minisplits in most of the rooms for AC, but there's also a heat pump so they can provide heating too. From my searching on this sub and elsewhere, there exists smart thermostats for line voltage units (like the Mysa https://shop-us.getmysa.com/products/mysa-baseboard?variant=7861106212921) and there's also IR blaster "pucks" from a bunch of different companies that connect and control the minisplits via IR (like Flair, Sensibo, etc) My question is there any "hub" thermostat that can do both? I imagine it'd be similar to the line-voltage thermo but with an additional IR blaster added on Or maybe there is a DIY solution that I should be going down. Can this be done with something like Tado? Or maybe I should ditch the convectors and demo them out of the house and rely entirely on the minisplits. I believe they are more efficient than the convectors so would save on $$. Thanks for any input. [link] [comments]

In house camera security setup Posted: 28 Feb 2021 10:15 PM PST I was reading before about a "in house security camera setup. You would run it on a hidden wireless network that was not connected to the internet. Thoughts? [link] [comments]
Cheap-ish RGB strips for along ceiling of my bedroom Posted: 28 Feb 2021 04:16 PM PST Hey everyone, so I'm really new to this whole RGB strip scene. I have RGB strips already, but they're some "five-dollar one color at a time only" RGB strips. I'm looking for some RGB strips that won't break the bank (under $35) and it would be better if it worked out of the box. I've been seeing some posts about separate controllers, 12v and 24v, and even Arduino stuff. That was all confusing for me considering the ones I bought just came out of the box and I slapped them onto my wall and bam they already worked lol. Do I need to know anything about coding for whatever those people were talking about? Just a basic 30ft RGB is what I'm looking for. Nothing too crazy, just want to be able to have some decent color and have the colors on the remote actually match the colors being shown on the lights, and to be able to strobe through multiple colors at once, like have more than one color option to be used at once on the strip. Doesn't need to have all the fancy things like Alexa, I would actually prefer to have no type of WiFi/Bluetooth connection at all, to be honest. Any other question of info needed please comment below [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Feb 2021 10:07 PM PST Just bought a place with a multi-zone system in the basement that sends wired audio all over the house. I'd love to shoot sound from my studio, (80ft and 2 floors away) to the home base for whole-house embarrassment, cough cough, enjoyment. Thinking a 150ft RCA cable would be a crap solution and need some help. But hey, I worked at Tweeter back in '00... we'd try the 150ft cable. [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Feb 2021 11:15 AM PST Hey guys, did some searching and could not find an answer. I currently have some Aeotec Nano dimmers wired without neutrals. I am looking to isolate the switch from the relay itself. I'd like the power to be constantly on and the flipping the switch event in HA turns on hue lights instead. Does anyone know of this is possible with current hardware or anything else? [link] [comments]
Bond Bridge Pro - any advantage? Posted: 28 Feb 2021 06:52 AM PST It seems the Bond Bridge Pro is now out, and I'm trying to figure out what would justify buying it (at over triple the price) over the normal Bond Bridge. Their feature comparison is a little sparse:
I can't really find any other information about the Bond Pro since it's new. I like the ability to wire things in when possible but not for that much more money. Are there other differences in terms of RF or software abilities that I'm missing? [link] [comments]
Honeywell T6 Pro Smart Temperature Offset Posted: 28 Feb 2021 10:00 AM PST I found online it says to hold down on menu for 5 seconds to enter advanced menu. Then go to temperature offset. I do not see temperature offset. Is there no temperature offset for this thermostat or is it something else? [link] [comments]
Help choosing temperature sensors Posted: 28 Feb 2021 05:45 AM PST Good morning everyone, I am trying to plan out a project to automate the lighting and heating in a large reptile enclosure. The basic idea is creating multiple heat and light zones in order to create a temperature gradient. I have broken the project down into several phases. Phase 1 (Data Phase)
Phase 2 (Action Phase)
Phase 3 (Alert Phase)
Phase 4 (Bonus Phase)
What I have
What I need help with Choosing temperature/ humidity sensors that I can remotely access using a dedicated pc running custom software, preferably .NET. My plan is to export the data to Excel for analysis. Google has given so many varying options I am not sure where to focus my research. I am willing to explore other languages or approaches if needed. Thanks in advance for your help. [link] [comments]
Wired smart dimmer to control smart bulb Posted: 28 Feb 2021 06:03 AM PST Okay, here's my dilemma. We recently reorganized our family room. Previously, lighting was controlled in a pretty standard 'dumb' setup with a couple floor lamps on a switched outlet controlled by a dimmer wall switch. In our new setup, it isn't feasible to connect the floor lamps to the switched outlet without a unsightly/hazardous extension cord going across the room. So, what I need to do (or have been asked to do, for ease of use for everyone in the house) is to find a way to allow continued control and dimming of the lamps from the wall switch. What I'm thinking is to wire a smart switch into the existing wall switch location which no longer controls the switched outlet, but directly controls smart bulbs in the lamps. Make sense? I have only a few smart devices in the house, so I'm not tied to any particular system. Any suggestions would be helpful. Does this idea make sense? Is there a simpler way (not involving an extension cord, lol) to have dimmer control of lights from an existing wall switch? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]
