    Smart Home Tablet Design

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 04:59 PM PST

    Hey Everyone

I thought I would share my Lovelace UI I made for my smart home. I made this thread for the home assistant reddit but since there's a lot of cross over with this reddit and not everyone is in both, I thought I would share it here too. I'm personally quite proud of it especially since I'm rubbish at code.

If you've previously set up a tablet interface and can spot where I can improve, please let me know.

    Tablet

running on Fully Kiosk Browser paid version so I can have it turn on with motion detection:

    https://preview.redd.it/h1zilfv6ocg61.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=58a04cb32f8112aab28badb4f4f430023bf093de

    Overview Screen
For this I was going for a quick view, quick selection interface. It includes a quick view of the time, weather, my councils recycling bin schedule, appliances and a spotify card. There's also a few hidden commands, tapping the living room and bedroom pictures turns their lights on and off, holding them down triggers a nightlight scene in both rooms. The bathroom photo is mostly there for temperature display reasons as my landlord has set up the light and bathroom fan on the same switch, I can't have a smart light in there but I thought I'd add some action commands to it as well. Tapping on it brings all the lights on to 90% and holding it down turns on my outside sprinklers as I ran out of room to put them nicely on this dashboard. This dashboard also excludes my smart kettle but it's also right beside it in the kitchen so I chose to exclude it for that reason.

Slight issue: Sometimes the Spotify custom card glitches up and I need to refresh the page, nothing major.

    https://preview.redd.it/c71ruou7ocg61.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=69b099d38bb95f6a1de4eac28a53b0e20735d766

    Camera Card
This was a difficult one for me as while I do have some home cameras, I don't have enough to fill the card and the Wyze integration through Motion Eye and a RTSP feed were causing my RP4 to get too hot so until a proper integration for that is released I decided to have this card showing traffic cameras in my area which are available on our councils website. Very handy for travelling and also if you're looking to avoid large crowds when out walking.

    https://preview.redd.it/gyf8r7k9ocg61.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=9745c4db010a0fced180085d7eb6cf5b167284d5

    Internet Card
This card was mostly just to tell me the status of my internet. The speed test integration with home assistant uses a lot of data over a monthly basis but as I have unlimited gigabit broadband, I'm not too concerned with it but it's something you should consider if you have capped broadband.

    https://preview.redd.it/ew3bpt8eocg61.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=00fecdbe20288c9bdc7f74dc10ef6dd217605360

    Multimedia
This one is pretty straight forward, I wanted a page which showed the media playing in the home but couldn't quite fit it all on the overview dashboard so it got its own page. The three picture entities up the top change to the cover of whatever is playing on them at the time and have their default icons at the default state when they're turned off and the bottom shows the most recent movies and tv shows added to my Plex server along with the Spotify integration.

The only issues I have with this screen is the Xbox integration doesn't pick up the cover image if a game is being played on the Xbox, it only picks up Apps. Hopefully this will be resolved in the integration with a home assistant update. One thing I'd like to add is a tap action on the picture entities so it opens up the media browser like you can do on some of the media player cards. Not sure how to do that though.

    News

Because I don't tend to turn the TV on to watch the national news at night, I figured a quick tab using a website card would work nicely. The issue I quickly ran into was how many news websites do not allow you to connect via a website card. This news site was the only one that allowed it and I decided to switch it to just the national news as the homepage looked a little funky with its layout on the card. Serves its purpose.

    https://preview.redd.it/89dyzkwgocg61.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=c4993ef610e52b1fface125c56ae2a4e51d87bb9

    Sensors

This one is pretty short and sweet, It's a card showing the temperature and humidity statistics in more detail than on the overview screen. I'm using 3 Mi temp sensors which I got for $12 off aliexpress for the job along with a ESP32.

    https://preview.redd.it/1kqainrhocg61.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=3399673536f578fcd4b7e9e5563cc4acc4778712

    Utilities

Upon realizing that having a battery card would be very helpful to keep track of things, I decided to make a utilities screen. I was running out of things to add at this point so I decided to add my home assistant and RP4 statistics along with random sensors. The Fitbit integration which handles the sleep efficiency and resting heartrate doesn't work that well but I'm keeping them there for lack of a better option at this stage.

    https://preview.redd.it/wzey41oiocg61.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=981650cbcc3921e329f1d89726749d9407b49aca

    Weather
This is a quick website card embedding windy.com information and you're able to change what its viewing using the options in the top right hand corner. Quite handy if you're looking for upcoming weather and deciding whether you should go out for a walk or not etc

    Mobile

If you're curious about my mobile dashboard you can find it here: https://imgur.com/a/Pyj4Wlc I tried to make it simple but nice to look at. Unlike the tablet dashboard it includes a remote for my Xbox as sometimes I have my Xbox controller in the office for PC games and I just want to control the Xbox in the bedroom to watch some Netflix. I decided against adding a Fire TV remote to it for my Fire Cube as it would be hard to beat the Fire TVs official mobile app which is quite detailed.

Let me know what you think, especially if you know how to resolve those small issues I'm looking to resolve throughout the post :)

Alternative to Samsung / Contract Sensors

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 09:24 PM PST

So it seems with the new ShartThings app, you cannot get text messages when a contact sensor is triggered (in Australia at least).

Is there another system on the market that has contact sensors for doors that would trigger an SMS when a door is opened or closed?

    Thanks.

    Tracking dogs

    Posted: 09 Feb 2021 12:54 AM PST

I'm curious if could track my dogs within the house. Since I have 1 wifi ap per floor, I think I could get their approximate location (floor) depending which AP a battery powered wifi client device might connect to. I'm wondering if say I could use a Bluetooth dog tag to further get direction/range from some sort of Bluetooth receiver, perhaps with a couple on each floor they could allow me approximately triangulate them a given floor.

This is mainly for fun so just wondering "how precise" it might be able to be with say 2 or 3 Bluetooth receivers in the corners of each floor. Battery life on dog tag would have to be decent so I'm not changing batteries all the time.

    Each floor is roughly 30' x 40'.

Thanks for any and all input!

Best secure wireless setup for Home Automation

    Posted: 09 Feb 2021 12:44 AM PST

I have a largish house (3 finished levels each about 1100 sq ft) with the electrical/ network closet in the bottom layer in one corner.

I have three Ubiquiti WAP's running a single roaming network, with a miscellaneous set of hardwired cables running to spots with fixed devices (like TV, PC, game consoles, printer etc). To date everything this works well with all devices on a single broadcast SSID.

I was planning on setting up an additional SSID, unbroadcast (hidden) that is dedicated to IOT devices, and if possible, use a DHCP server on the Ubiquity security gateway to assign dedicated IP's based on the iot devices' MAC address: in other words, I'd keep a dedicate list of IPs in a single spot (USG security device) rather than assigning statics onto each and every device, but they would all have essentially static IPs for web interfaces. I may also restrict access from this new hidden SSID to the internet , to minimize the amount of ISP bandwidth the devices can consume.

Any downside to this technique? I was also thinking about 2 public SSIDs, one for family and one for guests, and perhaps dividing a single class C subnet across all three SSID's using DHCP but with a handful (20?) addresses for dedicated devices with full internet bandwidth where I expect to need that (laptop or TV or iPad) versus those devices that require no access to "the cloud" (like a printer).

For small clusters of sensors that are physically proximate I've also thought about using old 10/100 access points (non ubiquiti) a small dedicate "branch wireless access point), again hidden SSID only and on the most uncovered part of the 5ghz channel range.

At no part do I plan to run any sort of wireless bridge or "extender", all of the AP's will be hardwired to the main local wired network as a background.

Any thought on this approach? Too complicated? Significant security loophole?

I plan to leave decent documentation "for the next guy" as well as I have an advancing disease such that I know my wife will at some point need help with the networking, so my documentation will cover both basic "how to reset the home Networking" for my wife to "when to call our friend" who is a pro installer of Ubiquiti gear and I will leave him with the most detail levelled documentation.

Thanks in advance and apologies if the is a duplicate, I didn't find anything much describing or critiquing this type of approach (especially using unbroadcasted AP SSID's.

Converting a lamp to smart controls... but retaining switch at lamp?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 02:32 PM PST

So obviously I can use a smart plug or smart bulb... but then the lamp can only be controlled via smart controls.

Does anyone make a conversion socket that allows the ability to use smart controls, but also retains the ability to turn the lamp on and off at the lamp itself?

It seems like this would be a no-brainer type of product... but my searching has turned nothing up.

    Blind Motor start up current

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 12:05 PM PST

I have a Zigbee relay controlling the up and down of the blind. My device is rated at 0.7A with the Blind rated at 0.48A and apparently the blind has a start up current of 1.1A.

Anyone used a device, like a contact relay, to protects a wireless relay from start up current?

    Another GE/Jasco switch died

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 03:19 PM PST

This morning, my hallway light entered the "death strobe" mode. It blinks off/on like a strobe light - if you are prone to seizures, this is probably to be avoided.

I think this switch is about 4-5 years old now. This is at least my 6th failed GE/Jasco z-wave switch to fail. I am very disappointed with the lifespan of these switches - utter crap.

It is now replaced by a Leviton switch. Ok, my rant mode is off. I just feel like I should share when a GE/Jasco switch dies. Seriously, shouldn't we be expecting more life from these?

Can I use a RGBCCT controller with just a white CCT light strip?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 11:33 AM PST

Hi all. I haven't done too much with light strips so am still learning. I have a cct led strip and need a zigbee controller. I see many RGBW and RGBCCT out there. Can I use a RGBCCT one with just a CCT strip? And if so, any special wiring required or will it be straight forward? Thanks. Alan

Turning on an arcade cabinet with a coin

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 09:21 AM PST

I'm trying to come up with a solution where I can connect my arcade cabinet to a smart plug and power it on by inserting a quarter into the coin door. The coin door has normally open contacts that close momentarily when a quarter is dropped in the slot.

I have a smart plug and home assistant all ready to go, but what I need is a standalone battery-powered z-wave (preferably) or zigbee switch that would trigger an event when the contacts on the coin door close. Anyone know of a device that would work in that scenario?

    Best lock for an office

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 11:44 AM PST

We are moving into a new office and want to set up a digital lock (but with key) at the knob. It is replacing a Schlage lock.

Any recommendations? Preferably something that doesn't require Zigbee or Z-Wave as we are not planning to do a smart office right now.

    Recommendation for Smart Thermostat

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 09:39 AM PST

Looking for a smart thermostat for this unit. It is not for HVAC, just a convection heater.

    https://www.rona.ca/en/quiet-wall-convector-2000-w-240-v-200-sq-ft-white-30665004

I don't have zigbee or z-wave, at least yet, but you could add those as options cause I want to get a hub anyway.

Would like to keep it under $100 Canadian.

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 09:36 AM PST

    Hey all!

I just got my new apartment, first time living alone so pretty excited.

The functionality I want is really simple, I want to be able to control lights (phillips hue bulbs?), temperature (nest thermostat), and my tv (google chrome cast)

Are the choices I listed out the easiest for this? I will be using google ecosystem!

    Thanks in advance!

Looking for a sensor that reports a gate's direction of travel as well as start/stop movements

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 02:34 PM PST

I'm not an electronics experts and can't really fiddle with my old electronic gate's internal board.

So, I'm looking for some sort of sensor that I can screw/glue to the gate/rails and connect to my existing zigbee stack. Contact or magnetic sensors might not workout for me because the key thing that I need to monitor is the gate's direction of travel (opening/closing/left/right).

The options that I have considered so far:

    • Camera with image recognition detecting which parts of the gate are visible or not. Canned because it will be too slow and prone to false positive because of the environment/use case.

    • several contact sensors evenly spaced out along the gate/rails + custom script to workout the direction of travel (based on the current sensor triggered and knowing the ID of the previous sensor, the script would determine whether the gate was moving left/right). Huge cons: any small lag between sensors and the server will throw false results & I don't know whether contact sensors would work out if there's no real contact but are just "passing by" between the parts.

    any suggestion is welcome

Line Voltage Fan Coil Thermostat Replacement - MCOHome Experiences?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 09:27 AM PST

I recently purchased an older condo with two pipe fan coil units for heating and cooling. The thermostats are fairly outdated, and I'm investigating replacement options that will integrate with Hubitat/Home Assistant.

The fan coil units are valveless and essentially a heat exchanger coupled to a two speed fan. The thermostats themselves run on line voltage, which complicates replacement by a Nest, Ecobee, or similar smart unit. Some people have reported success using a Nest with the combination of a 24v transformer and relay, but the wiring can be complicated and is more complex than I'd like to take on myself.

I'm curious if anyone has experience with these Z-Wave Thermostats from MCOhome?

They seem to tick all the boxes:

    • run on line voltage, not 24v
    • multi-speed fan control
    • Connects to Hubitat or can be used independent of a hub

but I'm wondering if there are any gotchas I've overlooked.

    Fastest RGBW bulbs

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 09:56 AM PST

I'm in the market for RGBW light bulbs but all of the ones I've tested have a delay when turning on. When I say delay, I'm referring to time for the bulb to illuminate the bulb when flipping a dumb switch to turn on the light fixture. I have multiple bulbs in the fixture and all dumb LED bulbs turn on immediately but the smart bulbs have a short delay. It's very noticeable when used next to dumb bulbs. This is even after flashing to Tasmota and removing from the cloud.

I've tried various wifi bulb (Lohas, Treatlife, LVWIT, Teckin, etc) bulbs and every one of them seems to have some sort of delay, some more significant than others. Is this expected for all smart bulbs? I don't see anyone talking or comparing this as a factor in the many comparison videos out there. Anyone have a good experience with delays? I'm currently looking at wifi because of price but open to zigbee as well if the delay isn't there.

Ceiling Fan Controller with Z-Wave or Zigbee support made for Europe?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 07:44 AM PST

Ceiling Fan Controller with Z-Wave or Zigbee support made for Europe?

Does anyone know of any Z-Wave or Zigbee 3-Speed or 4-Speed fan controller(s) made for Europe?

Looking to make current dumb ceiling fans and kitchen exhaust fan which today no wireless or remote-controlled capabilities at all into smart fans and compatible with Z-Wave or Zigbee controllers.

I would like a universal fan controller module/unit that can be hidden under the ceiling-fan canopy and used with 3-speed AC ceiling fans and a 4-Speed AC kitchen exhaust fan, (please note that by "fan controller" I mean an AC motor speed controller/driver and not just a remote control unit).

The fan controller also needs to be able to handle peak inductive loads of up to 350 Watt / 1.5 Amp. The inclusion of integrated a light dimmer would be a nice bonus as well as otherwise, that would have to be handled separately.

Now there look to be plenty of Z-Wave and Zigbee hidden fan controller receivers and in-wall fan control switches sold for the North American market, but those are made for 110V at 60 Hz AC mains electricity, plus Z-Wave controllers use a different radio frequency too. In the Europe Union (EU) we have 230V at 50 Hz AC mains electricity as standard today, (though all modern AC equipment CE certified for the EU should be able to accept 230V +/-10% i.e. 207-253V at 50 Hz), plus we use a different radio frequency for Z-Wave too.

I would prefer Z-Wave but Zigbee could work in a pinch, (WiFi, Bluetooth, or other RF is not acceptable for my purposes).

Something like Hampton Bay / Home Depot / King Of Fans (KOF) Zigbee Fan Controller in design and function. It is a universal fan controller and lighting dimmer combo receiver device that easily fits under the fan cowl that is wired directly to fan in order to independently control boths fan speeds and LED light dimming.

PS: Really wish that ITead would make a Z-Wave or Zigbee version of their Sonoff iFan03 3-Speed Fan Controller.
