How do water leak sensors work? Posted: 07 Feb 2021 11:38 PM PST My next step in throwing money into this hobby is to add water leak sensors. How do these work? Do I need to be super careful in where they're placed? It seems like I could be off by a half an inch (~1cm) and the sensor wouldn't trigger. What are best practices, etc? [link] [comments]
HomeKit-compatible buttons that my dog can activate? Posted: 07 Feb 2021 05:19 PM PST I have a use-case for a button that my dog can activate. Anybody know of any HomeKit (or HomeBridge) compatible buttons that would be easily modifiable to be triggered with, say, an Easy button or something else my dog could learn to push? Posted: 07 Feb 2021 11:53 AM PST I bought a Roborock S5 2 years ago. While I was impressed with the mapping and navigation, the robot would get stuck on my carpeted apartment with 'Main Brush Error' I would have to press resume and it would work until it would get struck with the same error at a different location. it was frustrating as I had to monitor it always and so I gave it away to my parents who have hardwood floor home and it has been working flawlessly. Has roborock fixed this issue since then? Any recent experience or any other brand recommendations are welcome. [link] [comments]
thermostat and ceiling fan control Posted: 07 Feb 2021 08:22 PM PST hi, my home has high ceilings, 2 stories. its clear the heat doesnt linger on the first floor even though the thermostat on the return is in the return duct, a stud cavity. my reasoning is that if the heat is running i can circ it down by common area ceiling fan. granted i think their is some imbalance in the supply. there are 3 supplies in less than half the area of the top floor by virtue of an undercut door. it might work if the door was normslly opened. i think if i get top floor air moving i could reduce the heater operation, and help to warm the 1st floor a bit longer. is there a thermostat that can remotely control fans? im hoping i could find a fan comtrooler, of not then an outlet that can be linked to thermostat action perhaps over wifi or rf [link] [comments]
Posted: 07 Feb 2021 12:30 PM PST I have one of these types of mounts that can swivel left and right. I was thinking of having a camera track the living room occupants and swivel the TV to the 'average' viewer. So if someone sits on the far left, the TV moves to the far left.
Any suggestions on how you'd do it? [link] [comments]

TP-link HS300 Energy Monitoring Capabilities? Posted: 07 Feb 2021 07:26 PM PST Is anyone experience with TP-link HS300? Specifically for energy monitoring? I'm wondering if I can use it to record and log data, export this data (numerical values of current, voltage, and power) and seconds time intervals? I need to create a dataset that can sample these various measurements for research measurements. [link] [comments]
Zigbee wall mounted remote control that fits EU boxes. Posted: 07 Feb 2021 04:51 AM PST Hello, I've done a lot of googling and I can't seem to find a wall mounted controller (like the philips hue remote, but it doesn't have to be removable) that is reliable. I've seen some talk about the Sunricher ones, but some say they are unreliable, others say they work great. They need to fit the EU standard wall boxes, which are 87x87mm and the screws are 60mm apart centre to centre. They can be powered by either battery or kinetics. They do not need to function as a switch for the lights other than controlling them through a hub. I actually don't want them to control the lights by wire, since we've got pretty strict regulations in Norway regarding that. I could mount the philips hue controllers next to them, but it will look much worse than something that is the same size as the switches. [link] [comments]
How to make a Drive way gate open from anywhere in world? Posted: 07 Feb 2021 08:33 AM PST How do you fit a standard double swing gate opener (mighty mule/ghost brand) that is about 400 ft from house to be able to be controlled from an iPhone (open/close/signal someone is at gate) as well as video? Posted: 07 Feb 2021 05:49 PM PST I am looking to get some smart plugs with power monitoring to my setup. Ideally I would like to find ones that can run Tasmota so that I can keep all control of these local and not rely on any cloud service. I have no problem flashing things myself. My question is this: I found the Sonoff S31 and it seems like the ideal device for me. It has power metering and is easy to flash with whatever firmware I want. But then I read this: https://tinkerman.cat/post/sonoff-s31-now-serious. The parts from the article that scare me is that the device is not registered with UL or any similar agency and according to the blog post the design isn't ideal because the AC traces in the PCB are way too close to the logic level traces. At the same time the article is from 2018. Does anyone know if these issues have since been mitigated? And if not, is there a better device with similar features? [link] [comments]
Reference thermometer recommendation Posted: 07 Feb 2021 08:08 AM PST Does anyone have a recommendation for a reasonably priced thermometer and/or thermo-hygrometer? I have so many temp sensors in the house that all report something slightly different it would be good to put a reliable thermometer at the location for a while and then adjust the reported temp on these devices to read something consistent. Thanks. [link] [comments]
Looking to wire relays in conjunction with existing standing desk buttons Posted: 07 Feb 2021 03:27 PM PST Hi all! I've managed the code and Raspberry Pi-side wiring of some standing desk automation so far. When it comes to actually connecting it to the desk, though, I'm at a bit of a loss. Album link: In the album, there are four photos:
My first attempt was to just wire the Down switch NO to relay NO, and Down switch C to relay C. While this allowed the button to still function (which is my goal), triggering the relay had no effect. I figure I should be able to tack on to the pads on the rear of the microswitches to accomplish my goal as the switches have C/NO/NC contacts the same as the relays, but the exact wiring configuration eludes me. Any input you can offer is greatly appreciated! [link] [comments]
Posted: 07 Feb 2021 06:42 AM PST I need to control an outlet in an un-heated building with no internet. I had a smart plug tethered to an old plugged in iPad with a Google Fi data only sim card, which worked great until the temperature got to around 20F and the iPad stopped charging. Anyone have any ideas? The cheaper the better! [link] [comments]

Conga 7090 IA vs Roborock S6 MaxV (other models?) Posted: 07 Feb 2021 03:39 AM PST I am looking to buy a new vacuum robot to keep my laminate flooring clean. I have a dog with short hair which has his toys laying around the house. Came across the Roborock S6 MaxV (S7 not available yet) and the Conga 7090 IA. Anyone has any feedback regarding these models? They seem quite similar to be honest, and the reviews I've found don't point to any advantage of one over the other. The things I am interested in are:

Posted: 07 Feb 2021 01:29 PM PST Hi everyone, I'll be doing an apartment renovation soon and I'm currently planning my Smart Home electrical network. The apartment will be done in an industrial/loft style, so most of the wires will be running on the surface. The lighting will be done with Philps Hue and Home Assistant. I also wanted to include physical switches on the walls. Since I want to use styled switches, I decided to run twisted pairs to the switches and then sense their states with Raspberry Pi that's hosting the Home Assistant. Is the capacitive coupling from the 230V AC running parallel to the twisted pairs going to cause issues sensing the switch state due to mere 3.3V of the RPi? (I was thinking internal RPi pull-up or pull-down). Do I need to go up to S/FTP or will U/FTP suffice? [link] [comments]
Is there a place to find thread devices? Posted: 07 Feb 2021 06:58 AM PST I am looking to build my entire system on thread devices starting with an iPod mini and nanoleaf lighting. I have always hated the idea of multiple bridges and controllers for home control. So thread makes this simple. Edit: If you answer starts with "I know you said you don't want..." Then just write it in your diary. [link] [comments] |
