Looking for a specific type of rocker light switch Posted: 06 Feb 2021 04:00 AM PST I'm looking for a Wi-Fi rocker light switch (no hub) that has dedicated positions for on/off. I found a lot of smart switches that have a paddle that only moves in 1 direction to toggle the light, but I'm looking for one that can move in both directions (like a regular rocker light switch). I don't need any dimming capabilities. I've found a couple that do just that, but they're Z-Wave light switches. Since I'm only installing the light switch in 1 room, I don't want to spend extra on a Z-Wave hub. Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks! Here's an example of a Z-Wave switch that does what I'm looking for: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RRBT6W5 I'm looking for a Wi-Fi hubless version of that. [link] [comments]

Need an air sensor/air pressure/air movement thing?? Posted: 07 Feb 2021 12:00 AM PST I'm taping a plastic box over my hvac vent and sticking a small hepa purifier on top so that the mold from the rest of the house that's choking me stops getting into my air (I have a giant air filter in the middle of my room, the hvac system is the problem). I sound like a 30-year 5-pack a day smoker and frequently can't breathe during coughing fits that go all day long. I do have all the medication I can medically be on, it is FAILING this badly. The filth needs to stop, but the pigs won't clean it. SO. The problem with this is that I have no way to know when the hvac is actually ON, which means my purifier has to run all the time, which means even when ac/heat isn't on, I'm still sucking filth out of the vent. This is a huge risk, despite that all the air will be filtered. No filter is perfect and running it when I don't need it--when I'm just poisoning myself--is STUPID. I have a google mini assistant thing. I need some way for the ass. to figure out that the hvac/heat/ac in the house is running, so it can then selectively turn on this specific purifier, and then turn it off when it's not. I would think this is some sort of air sensor? pressure or motion sensor? I need to know what this is called and/or how to rig one that will work with the ass.I cannot swap to a Nest, I do not have control of the house. I need something that can do this from my own room. I *can* put whatever this thing is inside the box that's getting taped over the actual air vent. I cannot remove the grill from over the vent. I checked search on here and there was zero things of this sort; I need something simple, not a whole thermostat system. I looked at temp sensors, but I think that will take far too long to register and so I won't get any of the air, it'll just be essentially blocked like it is now. The filter I have taped to the vent now is blocking all the heat/cooled air, so I'm freezing in winter and boiling in summer. I need that problem fixed, but not at the expense of allowing mold in. The mold has gotten worse with winter, as expected given that's the season for it. My budget is $0 so list whatever you have and I'll figure something out. I do not know what I'm doing with electronics, I can't solder stuff. If there's detailed instructions I can pull things open like you would a computer and poke at it, but beyond that I'm lost. I can't dump money into a "see what happens" kind of thing. I don't know what the flair here is? Apologies if I chose wrong. I can't leave where I am or move due to finances, I'm disabled and get next to nothing from disability. No, the cops and the state and the feds don't give a shit. [link] [comments]
Smart switch to control the light and fan speed? Posted: 06 Feb 2021 07:38 AM PST Hi I have a fan (Harbor Breeze) in my bedroom that is powered by the light switch. It has a remote that can turn on the light and control the fan speed. I like this fan and do not want to replace it. So, is there a smart switch I can buy that will allow me to turn on/off the light and fan speed via voice or Google home? I don't want the switch to turn it all off, just the light if i want it to (and still leave the fan on) or the fan if i want it to (and still leave the light on), etc. I'd prefer it be WiFi. Is there such a switch? Thank you! [link] [comments]
Issues with casting audio from video via Pixel 2 / MacBook Pro. Posted: 06 Feb 2021 10:49 AM PST Hey guys, I'm getting my home automation dialed in with Google Products. I've loved playing music throughout the whole house using Nest minis and Nest audios a nest hub, and Chromecast. I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong with casting, or if there is a workaround. I can cast the audio from a YouTube video to my Nest mini without issue utilizing my MacBook Pro. But when I try to do the same from my Pixel 2, I am only able to cast to the Nest hub and the Chromecast. I can force it by casting my phone audio, but then I can't cast that audio across multiple Nests products. Any suggestions are appreciated! [link] [comments]
Door sensor for toddlers bedroom Posted: 06 Feb 2021 09:36 PM PST Hey all, I'm looking for a good solution to alert me on my google home when my daughter opens her door at night. The upstairs is all baby proofed but don't like the idea of her walking around without us knowing. We have google/nest for all of our automation and home security but the nest detects will set off the house alarm. Really I'm looking for a door sensor that can alert with more than just a smart phone notification that doesn't wake us up and won't scare the shit out of her when she opens her door! (Ideally not one that I have to recharge every few days like the toddlermonitor) [link] [comments]

Question about making ceiling fan smart Posted: 06 Feb 2021 06:15 AM PST I have a ceiling fan which has begun running very slowly even on max speed. I believe it has a faulty capacitor. It is a dumb fan and I would prefer to make it smart. I saw the ifan03 but do not want to have to replace the capacitors to make it compatible with the US. If I just removed the faulty capacitor in the fan housing and wired the cords together, could I replace the wall switch which is dedicated to the fan with something like this: Treatlife Smart Ceiling Fan Control, 4 Speed Fan Switch for Ceiling Fan, Neutral Wire Required, Smart Home Devices that Works with Alexa and Google Assistant, Remote Control, Schedule, No Hub Required https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08P5D3ZKW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_D94J44R3DXFXBQE9MT6B Would that act as the capacitor and allow me to change speed like before? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Building a new house - don’t know where to start Posted: 06 Feb 2021 05:06 PM PST I am building a new house (first time owner) and would like to make the home 'smart'. I am hoping to get this communities ideas / experience on what they have or would like to have incorporated, and to get recommendations. My list so far: - Smart Thermostat (Nest Learning?) - Smart lock for the front door (would still like to have a key entry option...thinking Yale of Schlage) - Doorbell (Ring or Nest?) - Outdoor cameras (Ring?) - Indoor Security...C02/Fire/etc (Ring?) Trying to stay on a budget and looking for recommendations, but from all the research I've done Google / Ring have most of the market for some of these technologies. Also, I am iPhone and Alexa user for compatibility. [link] [comments]
Outdoor window retractable awnings or shades? Posted: 06 Feb 2021 12:56 PM PST Before summer hits, I'd love to find some sort of exterior window coverings that can be tied into a home automation setup. I'm open to whatever system works best, since I only have rudimentary Alexa\Kasa\Home Assistant things going on right now. Though I'm having a tough time finding outdoor shades. Thanks! How to create simple push notifications for custom devices? Posted: 06 Feb 2021 07:50 AM PST Hi guys, I recently built this smart peephole with a Raspberry Pi Zero. https://www.reddit.com/r/homeautomation/comments/l8o09p/looking_for_a_smart_peephole/ It works flawlessly with Motion and Pushbullet sending events to my phone. Now since it works really well, and since Pushbullet has this limitation, I would like to check free options to replace Pushbullet. I have a Google Home Mini device then I was thinking maybe I could integrate this somehow with Google Home. So, my questions are? - What I can use as a free replacement for Pushbullet? - Is it possible to integrate this with any other hub, like Google Home? - How can I do that? Do you have any tutorials to put this running easily? [link] [comments]
7-day thermostat that supports different time periods for heat and cool? Posted: 06 Feb 2021 04:25 PM PST I'm looking for a 7-day thermostat that allows you to set the periods (wake, leave, return, sleep) to different times of day depending on whether the system is in heat or cool mode. For example: Cool: I have tried both an RTH7560E and an RTH2510B, and neither of them support this feature. My RTH6350 does, but it's a 5-2 day. I would prefer a stat that doesn't require a C wire. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Light switches for shallow back-boxes (UK) Posted: 06 Feb 2021 07:03 AM PST All the light switch back-boxes in my house are 16mm. The walls are brick, so I can't use deeper boxes. I'm happy to use a 10mm spacer, but can anyone recommend a light switch that isn't too deep and which will work with Home assistant? Most of the ones I've seen are deeper than 25mm. Also, they need to work without a neutral as every single switch in the house is just a switched live, there's not even an earth in the box. I'd prefer to go down the route of switches, rather than smart bulbs, so that the lights can be operated manually as well as with HA. [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Feb 2021 08:00 PM PST I just bought a home that has ceiling speakers installed throughout the house. I'm looking for a device (ie. Receiver) that I can use to power the speakers and run audio from my phone via Bluetooth or WiFi. Any suggestions? [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Feb 2021 04:01 PM PST We'll be moving in bit and I'm thinking about taking the opportunity to change our alarm system (Honeywell Lyric). Mostly because the total control app is so ridiculous to use, and additional sensors (which I'll need) are pretty pricey. Most of my home automation setup based on z-wave switches, z-wave locks, SkyBell door bell and zigbee temp/humidity sensors are coming along to the new house. Currently using a SmartThings hub (Alexa integrated)to control it all though I'm finding it limited/clunky since the update to the new app. Looking to see if there might be some options for a do it yourself/more cost effective type of setup that still can be monitored by a service. I'm based in Canada. Not opposed to switching hubs as I would be interested in something with more local control, but don't want to go down the path of home assistant (explored it before and don't have the time required for it). Any suggestions would be appreciated [link] [comments]
Has anyone managed to set up remote Wake-on-LAN? Posted: 06 Feb 2021 03:00 PM PST I've enabled WoL on my PC, but then I found that my router (Netgear R6220) does not allow port forwarding to the broadcast address. After some research, I found out most home routers block forwarding to the broadcast address (security concerns I guess). Does anyone know of any workarounds? I think my options are either to just give in and leave my PC awake all the time, or I can set up my Rasbperry Pi to send a magic packet and wake up my PC. (Not sure of the best way to do that. Maybe use ssh to run a script on my Pi.) [link] [comments]
Controlling a console humidifier Posted: 06 Feb 2021 09:53 AM PST I was wondering if there is a way to do this using the ecosystems I already have. I live in an apartment so I cant do any major modifications. The HVAC does not have a humidifier installed, and it gets incredibly dry in here during the winter. So I want to get a console humidifier. I have had them before and the built in humidistats are generally crap, so I want to be able to control it externally. I have just installed an Ecobee 5 with the smart sensors. It has a humidifier output that I could just use a 24V relay with it, except the only place I could put the humidifier (without stringing exposed wire since I cant run anything in-wall) is literally right under the thermostat which would affect the readings. So I was wondering, since I have a bunch of Kasa smart outlets, is there a way to use the humidity reading from the Ecobee to control one of the Kasa outlets? Apparently Alexa can't read the humidity sensors (if I ask "Whats the humidity in the bedroom?" she says "Sorry, thats not supported yet"), but she does report the temperature for any sensor when asked. So I cant create a routine there. Another idea i had would be to use the Ecobee humidifier output to trigger some connected transmitter, which would trigger the Kasa on and off. Except I dont know what I'd need. I have been thinking about OpenHAB for a while, but never had any real reason to dig deeper into it. But now that I have several different ecosystems (Kasa, Hue, Wiz, Ecobee, Alexa), I really want to tie it together because its kind of wonky to use all the different apps to control things. Theres other things I want to add in the future too like automatic blinds. Is this something OpenHAB would be able to do? Any other suggestions? Can it also do things like use Hue Dimmers and Taps to control Wiz or Kasa? The two different Philips ecosystems, and not being able to control them from one app is really starting to annoy me. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Best thermostat, doorbell and smart lock Posted: 06 Feb 2021 06:35 PM PST What do you think is the best thermostat, video doorbell and smart lock? Whether it's a system of all same company or all separate brands. I'm considering the Yale with keyhole, and the ecobee thermostat and then completely lost on a doorbell but my mind is spinning with all the options on all three. [link] [comments]

Would this be possible Lutron+Shelly Posted: 06 Feb 2021 05:12 PM PST I have 12/2 going to a dumb switch. I want to use Lutron on/off so I need a neutral. Would it be possible to, at the fixture swap the switch leg to a neutral. Thus making the switch functional and have the load side connected to a Shelly relay. And then at the fixture put a second relay that will close when it sees the other Shelly has power on its input? My house is all Lutron Caseta and I have a bunch of ones that aren't being used. I can't dim because of the bulb type in the garage so Lutron dimmer switches aren't an option. I also have a bunch of Shelly relays that I've never used. This way there is no out of pocket costs. I might look into running 12/3. [link] [comments] |
