    Starting from scratch set up

    Posted: 05 Feb 2021 01:05 PM PST

Hi everyone, I'm moving house next week and see it as a great opportunity to start to build a smart home. The problem I have is there seems to be so much choice out there and I'm not entirely sure what will best fit my needs. I'd be massively grateful if anybody could point me towards a guide they found useful or even better give some of their own advice. My requirements are relatively simple for the moment:

    • I'll be setting up security cameras as the property comes with land, Reolink seems to best suit my needs from the research I've done
    • I would like to install smart bulbs and build routines/controls via my iPhone
    • Eventually I would like to build and integrate a Sonos set up (beam and Ones to begin with)

Is there a brand or set up approach that would be good to start with? I'm UK based. Many thanks

I wish there were more tablet wall mounts with in wall power access.

    Posted: 05 Feb 2021 07:52 PM PST

I have a velcro mounted Kindle 8 on my fridge withe the power cable off to the right. My new house has 2 spots with plenty of space fore a Kindle 7-10" but I want the power cable to be internal, in the case into the wall where it would access power.

I see a lot of humdrum options that route the power down the wall, in full view, and into a wall wort. I just wish more tablet holders could accommodate a wall mount where the power is routed inside.

Does anyone have any options? Seems like an opportunity for a 3d engineer to work on.

How do I reconnect my direct connect smart bulbs ( c by ge) to the home app on my iphone using C-reach (smart bridge)?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2021 11:09 PM PST

I know it must at least be possible because I was able to do it before (hence the "reconnect"), but then I reset the smart bridge, which disconnected my lights from both the c by ge app and the home app. I am not able to connect the smart bulbs to the home app the same way that I did before.

I may have also updated the home or c by ge app?

How to get something to check in when it receives a 12v signal?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2021 09:33 AM PST

I apologize in advance because I don't know the terminology enough to be able to google it, but what I'm looking to do:

My projector, like most, has a 12v out to trigger a motorized projector screen. Projector turns on, 12v asserted, projector turns off, 12v deasserts.

I don't care about a projector screen, but all I want is something to detect that 12v and update SmartThings, or SmartLife, or Alexa that it has a signal so I can trigger a routine off it..ie, When the projector turns on, turn off the poster lights in the theater room.

Basically, send a Power=true or false signal that I can use. The wiring for the poster lights wouldn't be tied to this device, but they're already controllable in my automation platform.

I'm not sure if it would be something that gets power and checks in, and stays offline most of the time, or runs off of a watch battery and stays on. If it ran off of a battery, i could trigger when the projectors turned off too..since i don't think you can automate based on a device state of OFFLINE.

I think this would be a Sonoff or a Shelly..but i get really confused when I start seeing all of the inching and locking modes. I've found a lot of demonstrations of "Provide 12v when I send the signal in SmartLife, but not "Tell SmartLife I have a signal."

Any ideas of how to accomplish? Thanks in advance.

    'Locked' Savant Home Automation

    Posted: 05 Feb 2021 01:17 PM PST

Hey all - I bought a house couple years ago that came with a 'locked' savant system. It controls my lighting, security cameras, ceiling audios and security system. I have been looking into what 'locked' means, and now I know 'locked' means as an end user, you don't have the ability to do anything with it other than "using" the system.

If I want to add a new device, I need to contact the 'Professional Installer', if I want upgrade, I need to contact the 'professional installer', the worst part is I cannot change simply change out my modem because somehow my Savant system is tied to an IP (as I was told by the low voltage guy) , if I disconnect or replace the modem, the whole system will have to be re-configured. I do not know how much it will cost every time I want something done, but when I reached out to the 'Professional Installer', I get no response.

Recently I am thinking of upgrading my modem by getting my current ISP to swap out the old one (or change ISP entirely). But the problem is my Savant system will pretty much become useless unless I get a hold of the 'Professional Installer' to set up. Who knows how much this is going to cost me?

I am hoping to hear some thoughts on this. Also any idea if there is a way to make this a user version so I can do things myself?

    Thanks.

How have you guys detected occupancy in a room?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2021 09:32 PM PST

I want to detect if someone is in a room and turn the light off when no one is in the room. At the moment I am thinking of putting 2 motion sensors a few inches apart. Then count in what order the motion sensors are triggered to see if someone is walking in/out. But this system would fail when there are 2 people in the room. What do you guys think?

Is there not a one-app solution? (For my Nest cams, Hue lights, Gosund outlets, etc.)

    Posted: 05 Feb 2021 08:38 PM PST

We have a bunch of devices running lots of things in our house:

    • 35ish Hue lights
    • 2 iRobot vacuums
    • 5 Gosund wifi outlet switches
    • 5 Nest cameras
    • 1 Kevo door lock
    • Samsung TV
    • wifi-enabled heat pump / AC
    • 1 Mysa thermostat

Is there no single app that can integrate all these together? We use Apple phones.

Apple's Home app is a nightmare. Crashes trying to set up a Good Night scene... doesn't recognize the door lock or wifi outlets... etc.

I just want an app that I can tap a button to:

    • Lock the door
    • turn off the lights
    • turn off the TV
    • turn down the thermostat
    • turn off two of the wifi wall outlets.

I know they all have their own separate apps, but I want ONE app.

I mean, the TV commercials sure make it seem like I can do this.

Is there a magical app I'm missing? I'd pay handsomely for an app that can integrate all devices.

Aqara Door Sensor, Goove LED Strip and Home Assistant Automation

    Posted: 05 Feb 2021 07:52 PM PST

I have been using Home Assistant for a bit under a year and I am hooked! I have added water tank pressure sensors (to measure water level), Aqara temperature sensors, Sensibo Air Con controller, Synology health data, printer status and much more.

I wanted to explore automation much more, so as a start I got a Govee LED strip, an Aqara door sensor and used it to turn the strip red or white when opening my "server cupboard", depending on the temperature in the cupboard. A bit of fun, but a really good learning journey.

I made a little video of the project and am keen to hear people's thoughts. What else could I have done, any other unusual uses for lights, sensors etc. I have a second LED strip for another project too, and I am thinking it could have a lot more "modes" for different events. So many opportunities for activities. 🤓

    Homeseer and wifi direct devices...

    Posted: 05 Feb 2021 07:15 AM PST

I just purchased a Homeseer hub because I want to integrate some non-neutral wire smart switches. Up until now, I have been using 100% direct wifi connect devices (outlets, bulbs, cameras, led strips, and a few switches where I do have neutral wires).

I know that with Google Assistant integration, I will be able to have my existing wifi devices control z-wave devices. But, I am wondering if that will work both ways. For example, if I get a z-wave motion detector, can I have it so that it will automatically turn on/off a wifi bulb? Or, will I need to replace it with a z-wave bulb for that to work.

    Thanks!

Smart plugs that support 230v/20a Perpendicular plugs?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2021 09:35 AM PST

I rent an apartment in NYC and until now have been running my window units through smartAC plugs made by thinkeco. Those have stopped working, and I need to buy new ones, preferably from a better brand. The trouble is, the window units use weird plugs and I cannot find a single smart plug that supports them. It's the Perpendicular type here: https://products.geappliances.com/appliance/gea-support-search-content?contentId=22030. I've googled around with no success.

Since I rent the apartment, I can't change AC units or wiring or anything.

Has anyone successfully found a smart plug for an appliance that uses this plug type?

    C by GE

    Posted: 05 Feb 2021 05:49 PM PST

Any ideas on how to get GE's smart bulbs and switches to work with Google Home/nest again? The last 2 firmware updates have all but crippled mine. I've factory reset all 4 of my bulbs and switches and all of my Google devices several times, all at the same time and separately. Still nothing.

Alexa will not discover my Lutron lamp dimmer?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2021 05:45 PM PST

I have installed a bunch of Lutron dimmer and on/off (for non dimmable LED lights like outdoor floods) all over my house and not had a single issue integrating with Alexa. However, I recently purchased a plug in lamp dimmer to control two floor lamps in the living room. No matter what I do Alexa will not discover it. I've deleted the dimmer from the Lutron app and reinstalled it multiple times, etc... Anyone else have this issue? I just want to add it to my "Family Room" group so that I can just say "Alexa, turn on Family Room" and have the wall sconces and floor lamps all come on.

Send myself arbritrary notifications to phone? (sms, push notification, etc?)

    Posted: 05 Feb 2021 05:41 PM PST

Hi guys, what's wondering what would be the best way to send myself arbitrary notifications for whatever automation trigger I like.

EG: temperature hit a certain, someone turn off a certain light, camera detected X, etc.

I mean something decoupled that I can just stick in my code, for example in the past I've used Sendgrid for email notifications, but was wondering if there was a notification mobile app that works by hitting up and http endpoint or something similar?

I don't know if it exists, but ideally there would be a mobile app, you hit up an endpoint with your user token, and it pushes a notification to your phone with an arbitrary message you sent in the endpoint.

Ideally something on my phone since I always have that with me.

    Thanks!

How to turn off Google's Shopping List in Google Home/ Google Assistant?

Advice to make new (to me) home a little smarter?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2021 08:44 AM PST

    Hey all,

I recently bought a 1,752 sqft, 100-year-old, two-story brick house that I'd like to integrate a few smart devices into. I currently have a couple Xiaomi robo-vacs (an older and newer model for both floors), and a 2019 Nvidia Shield, and that's it. I'd like to add some smart bulbs, a thermostat (based on reviews, leaning towards an Ecobee), a video doorbell of some sort, and...I guess that's about it for now (unless you all have some suggestions).

I have an AC1750 Archer C7 router in an upstairs computer room that seems to be reaching most of the house relatively well at 2.4GHz for devices like my phone and the vacuums, though I'm at about half signal strength at 5GHz for the Sheild in my living room.

I keep reading about mesh networks, and hubs, and whatnot, and it all sounds helpful, but I'm not sure if I need all of that, or if I do what to get/where to begin.

Any advice on where to begin, what to get, and the like would be very helpful.

Oh, this is kinda dumb, but I do have a side question... I have a light switch that turns on both my front porch light as well as a front yard lamp. I'd like to put the lamp on a timer instead of manually flicking it on/off every day. Is it possible to get a durable smart bulb that will be ok for the outdoors that will work on a timer (I live in the Midwest where we have standard 4 seasons)?

    Alright, thanks!

Suggestions for monitoring salt level in water softener

    Posted: 05 Feb 2021 08:42 AM PST

I usually need to refill my water softener's salt tank only once every couple months and because it is so infrequent and I'm rarely down in the basement I forget to check it. I'm wondering if anyone has an idea of how I could monitor the level of salt in the tank to remind me to refill it.

If it was liquid, I could use a float gauge like this https://www.amazon.ca/Marine-Sensor-Sending-240-33-Stainless/dp/B082NLQ4DB to measure the liquid level... but a salt tank isn't liquid, it's big grains of salt and I'm not sure how to measure that. I don't mind DIYing something with an Arduino and Tasmoto if necessary.

    Spotify Control with Hubitat/Lutron Pico

    Posted: 05 Feb 2021 05:51 AM PST

My current multi-zone audio is handled via Spotify -> Chromecast Audio -> class D amp on each zone -> wired speakers. I've considered adding a multi-zone amp but the current setup is working fine so I haven't.

I have 1-zone on a screened-in porch where my wife would like me to install a physical volume control so she and/or guests don't have to dig out phones to control the volume and ideally she has the ability to forward tracks, pause, etc. as well.

One option I've considered was just installing a Google Nest Hub at this location but although it is covered, it is still an "outdoor" area and I'm not sure how well it would hold up. I think the most desirable option would be a Lutron Audio Pico and I have the Lutron Radio Ra2 system installed so the main repeater can handle communication with the Hubitat. The problem is I can't seem to find a good off-the-shelf way of even controlling amp volume much less track control via Spotify and wanted to solicit some input here.

The only option I've sort of sketched out is some sort of Raspberry Pi device that could replace the CCA in the chain and run Spotify. I'm sure that could interface with the Hubitat via z-wave or some other protocol and give me full control via the Lutron Pico and I know there are even Class-D amps for the Raspberry Pi as well. Any other ideas?
