Posted: 20 Apr 2021 07:36 PM PDT I am a pretty tech-savvy person and I like the freedom that comes with DIY. At the same time, I recognize that I do not know nearly enough about the smarthome space to be able to foresee everything that I may want in a newly renovated apartment - how many ethernet wires to run to different places, what technologies work the best together, what underlying system I should use to integrate it all, etc. I would ideally want a smarthome integrator who I can talk things through with, have set up my initial smarthome stuff, and then take over from there. I don't think that exists though. In your opinion, should I use a smarthome integrator and just figure out what I need/want and get that stuff installed all properly and easily working together, or should I try to DIY everything and potentially never actually get around to fully integrating things and making an easy user experience? Any personal experience or anecdotes are welcome. Also suggestions for things I might want to include in my smartapartment would be very cool [link] [comments]

Posted: 20 Apr 2021 06:41 PM PDT Hi all I have a Savant system installed in my (new) house. It's connected to basically everything (audio included obviously) but I can't find an Intercom option. Is there a hidden feature for this or do I have a bad case of wishful thinking? [link] [comments]

How safe is my Chinese Water Leak Sensor (Tuya re-branded)? Posted: 20 Apr 2021 04:16 PM PDT I have a Tuya water leak sensor (Kerui branded, FWIW) that runs off 2xAAA batteries, wifi and the Tuya app. How safe is this device to use? It seems to work really well based on the testing I've done, but I'm worried about security since I'm running this through my home network. The app runs through my iPhone, so I assume my data is safe there? Am I being paranoid? [link] [comments]

WiFi control of an entry gate in a creative way, needing input Posted: 20 Apr 2021 03:08 PM PDT A client of mine has a large entry gate in their driveway that utilizes an FAAC in ground hydraulic opening system, so there are no arms to see externally. Just two large gates that open horizontally. If it had moving arms or anything that went from vertical to horizontal we'd just tie it in to the existing Genie garage door system, but that requires a sensor that reports back vertical or horizontal position (it's used for a garage door that moves up and down). I suppose I could rig up some sort of elaborate system to physically move this sensor but that's far from ideal, I'd have to block it from the elements too. The gate manufacturer doesn't make any form of 'wifi kit', but the controller has a relatively simple board that is wired into the garage to a basic light switch that will open/close the gate, so it's just a normally open/closed relay. It also has generic lift master openers for cars. Now it wouldn't be all that hard to buy a simple "wifi gate opener kit" off amazon, but the goal here is to have specific privilages for users. It's a large property and there will likely be many individuals with access to the app for specific purposes (gardeners, workers etc). The homeowner would like a way to "lock" the gate if he chooses to, maybe for a night at home with his family or whatever the scenario may be. I'd also like to leave something similar to the light switch in place, some physical way to open/close the gate when you're in the house. I don't know of a permissions based solution off the shelf, I've considered a basic wifi light switch and having the output trigger a relay, this would solve most of the issues but I don't know of any that have specific user accounts etc. So before I research the day away, any ideas? Currently it's connected to an old Elan system and that works, but again there are too many people with access to this and no way to eliminate access when required. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Is there a smart plug that can be managed by bluetooth if wifi fails? Posted: 20 Apr 2021 12:42 PM PDT Scenario: Resort has cabins have a mesh wifi system. There are access points (APs) in each cabin. APs are on POE injectors (ugh, I know). An AP starts acting up and the wifi drops. Renters call management and complain. Manager/maintenance person wants to drive by the cabin and connect via bluetooth to the plug without stepping inside the cabin and disturbing the renters. Is there a smart plug that allows this? A lot of the plugs out there don't necessarily say this is possible. [link] [comments]
HomeKit inconsistent humidity automation Posted: 20 Apr 2021 12:20 PM PDT Hello everyone, I've been to using HomKit for a few months now and everything is great. However I haven't one singles issue that I cannot overcome. I have an automation to turn on/off the bathroom fan based on humidity. Basically if humidity is >= 76%, turn fan on and if humidity is <= 75%, turn fan off. The problem is that this works 2-3 times after I create the automation (not always) and then suddenly stops. I can see the proper value in the Home app, but still the automation wasn't triggered. I've even configured a push notification in the sensor's manufacturer app and it gets triggered. I've tried to create the automation in several apps with similar results:
I've also tried setting a trigger with "any" value and then set the value using condition, but it didn't help either.. Did anyone have similar issues or have suggestions what else to try as I am clueless already? Thanks [link] [comments]

Inovelli: buy Black or wait for Red? Posted: 20 Apr 2021 10:25 AM PDT I've got a new house that needs...let's just say lots of switches. We're not moving in for a while while we do some fix-up, and I'd like to start working on smartening up the house while that's going on; I'll be putting in a HomeAssistant hub. My current place has a grab-bag of various smart switches that work good 'nuf with the Smartthings hub I've got now. It sounds like everyone agrees that Invoelli dimmers are the best, but the Reds are out of stock and apparently will be until at least July due to the chip shortage. Should I snap up some Blacks because I can and they're on sale? What will I miss? I don't care that much about energy monitoring, and I think I can do a lot of scene-control type stuff just by using Siri/Hass/some diy scripting. I do really like that I can double-tap to go to 100% on my current dimmers, though, and I guess that won't work with the Blacks? Is that right? Can I make Hass register two presses or do I need the scene-control support in the dimmer for that? [link] [comments]
Posted: 20 Apr 2021 02:36 AM PDT Long time lurker and big fan of the sub. Just wondering if anyone has advise or recommendations for a single light switch (1 gang/1 way) in the UK that doesn't require natural wire. I have Philips hue bulbs\hub and main reason I want to fit one is just to stop people using the main light switch in my front room. I've found this one on Amazon as a start but thought I'd ask you pros first. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]
Motion sensor that doesn't send false positives? Posted: 20 Apr 2021 09:55 AM PDT I've seen people recommending the Aeotec Trisensor, but I have one and I get multiple false positives per night. Does anyone have a good one they can recommend? [link] [comments]
Posted: 20 Apr 2021 09:40 AM PDT Can you connect just one or a pair of sonos one SL (no mic) to smartthings? I would like to have a speaker that will make announcements on events, e.g. front door open, garage door open, etc and play music. Dont want a mic connected to google or alexa. Was looking at the nest mini but it appears if you switch the mic off it keeps reminding you that it is muted [link] [comments]
Posted: 20 Apr 2021 09:06 AM PDT Heyo everybody! I have a server in my home and I'd like to monitor its power draw. Is there a device and/or (diy) tutorial on how to do that? Having it integrated as a sensor in HomeAssistant would be ideal, but just having the device send data to an InfluxDB or a REST API would also be great. I don't seem to find anything online... Thanks for your help :) [link] [comments] |
