Need break down on wiring setup for hardwired based smoke detectors. Posted: 19 Apr 2021 02:57 PM PDT Im in the process of running new 22 gauge wiring runs for alarm sensors while walls are open that i may or may not use but have hit a snag when it comes to smoke/co detectors. Do the new smart hardwired detectors that i may get from nest or other major brands use 12 or 14 gauge romex? I ask as it seems like there may be some models that use 18 gauge wiring that seem to be meant for use with a traditional paneled security system? I'm willing to run both types if needed so long as i'm covering myself for whatever type of setup i may use in the future. Just want to understand what uses what essentially. [link] [comments]
Replace koubachi sensors - are there any good alternatives? Posted: 19 Apr 2021 10:44 PM PDT Hi. Way back when I used koubachi sensors for my potted plants and it worked like a charm but then I bought a house and forgot about them until I found them again the other day. Turns out they were bought out by gardena and cannot (to my knowledge at least) be configured to work without the app and accompanying cloud service. I would like a replacement that works pretty much like the koubachis used to and the closest thing I've found so far anyway is the mi flora but reviews of the ios app and sensors tell a tale of frequent connection problems. Is anyone using the aforementioned sensors and app combo? Is it as bad as the reviewers make it out to be or is it a thing of the past? Are there other alternatives to consider? I'm pretty heavily invested in apple's eco system so it's a plus if it has homekit integration or can be made to work with it. Keep in mind that I do not have the time to build and maintain something like an arduino solution and truth be told I'm rather new to home automation. [link] [comments]
Question regarding robot vacuum Posted: 19 Apr 2021 07:03 PM PDT Hi I have zero experience about robot vacuum, I'm gonna be moving into a new home in the next couple weeks but the new home will be much larger than my current home . Would like two robots to help clean for my parents one for upstairs and one for downstairs Criteria

Can 5 different light switches be consolidated down to a single panel? Posted: 19 Apr 2021 09:14 PM PDT I live in a small apartment and want to get my lighting hooked up to work with Alexa. All of the ceiling lights in the apt are controlled by 5 separate wall switches. I'm pretty sure I could just buy smart switches, replace them all, and id them individually with Alexa. ... But that's no fun. I'm very new to this stuff, but here's my thought: All of these lights are on the same circuit (One breaker switch controls them all). Does that somehow make it possible to have one panel on the wall that controls all of the lights? Maybe that means I don't need to replace all of the wall switches (expensive), and instead buy just one smart panel or something to control it all? I can't tell if my idea is complete nonsense or not. Please let me know either way :) [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Apr 2021 05:17 PM PDT I have a two story home and my wife and I are busy people with three kids, we don't like to yell across the house to get a kids attention. So we wanted to install some speakers/mics to be able to communicate across the house. I have poe, zwave, and home assistant. I can impliment another solution if these aren't possible, but prefer to use something I already have. I searched for some possible speakers or PA systems to use, but came up dry. I may not be searching the right things though. Any help is appreciated. [link] [comments]
In-wall dimmer and remote with same form factor? Posted: 19 Apr 2021 02:13 PM PDT Struggling to come up with a seamless solution for my house. It's old, so there are not a lot of wall switches in convenient places, and lots of double-switch-in-single-gang, so I plan to add some scene remotes in places. My struggle is nothing I've found are similar. I'm trying a Caseta dimmer and a couple Pico remotes. I like the picos, I can read their state directly in home assistant. But the wall dimmer can't read the button state.... so if I wanted one control like the kitchen ceiling wall dimmer to turn on extra lights under cabinet, I need an extra remote there anyway. And then even for Caseta the dimmer and pico don't match, pico has the extra button. And they're hard to flip on with your hands full. I like the Inovelli red and could come up with lots of ideas for the LED... but those won't fit in half the spots so I need a remote, such as adding a 3-way where no wiring exists, or scene remote that would control both a wall switch and plug in dimmer. Got super excited when I found Inovelli project BFF, but looks like indefinite hold. Aeotec nano is great in a couple spots, but again linking any sort of remote will not match the switches there. Other remotes like ikea or aqara or phillips are ok, but stand out as definitely-not-a-decora-rocker and low on WAF if every control in the house has a different set of buttons. Am I missing any other decora-replacement remotes? Have HA with zwave+zigbee. Cheers friends! [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Apr 2021 02:05 PM PDT I've been using Govee RGB led strips but I'm doing some remodeling and need to have multiple 5-6 ft strips that are alexa compatible in office. What options do I have that done break the bank and don't leave 10 ft of strip left over that I cut off (can I reuse it with another controller and connector kit?) Ideas are welcome [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Apr 2021 11:45 PM PDT Hi, Would be appreciative of your help. There's another post where some poor person has been researching doorbells for months but getting nowhere... Same issue with me. I'm based in the UK, my property has no wiring so POE is key as am getting that put in near the door and going to mount other cameras nearby. I am looking for a decent poe smart doorbell that plays nicely with HA, as well as other security cameras round the house. Is doorbird the only option? Would someone kindly provide some options for both the doorbell and the cameras? Thanks in advance [link] [comments]

Smart door lock recommendations Posted: 19 Apr 2021 11:40 AM PDT Hey guys I am from India. I am new to home automation, just got a home mini and a few smart lights. I used to have a remote controlled door lock for our front door but that stopped working properly about a few months ago. [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Apr 2021 07:01 PM PDT My fiancee and I both have iPhones and we are moving into a new house where we'd like to set up a multiple room wireless speaker system. I'm leaning towards using Google Nest products with a Nest Hub for the rest of my home automation. What would you recommend as far as other hardware, speakers, or software to have the most seamless experience of streaming music for each of us? [link] [comments]
Smart sockets and multi plugs? Posted: 19 Apr 2021 02:27 PM PDT I have a variety of zigbee and zwave devices but have observed that for some reason sockets/plugs seem to die when being plugged into multi-plugs - does anyone know if there are any issues with this in general? I mainly use them as relays without having anything plugged in - had issues with Ikea tradfri, aeontec, & tkb - I even swapped out the multi plugs to eliminate them being potentially faulty but after around 3-9 months the sockets are just dead. I was wondering if anyone else experienced similar behaviour or if there is anything known about this? [link] [comments]
Control garage and gate Wifi wirefree (rf 433 rolling codes)? Posted: 19 Apr 2021 08:28 AM PDT I would like to control both my gate and garage door via the internet (e.g Google home). I bought a sonoff rf bridge thinking (naively perhaps) this would work. On further reading garage/gate remotes are more complex than I realised, using rolling codes and 64 bit encryption. And for good reason naturally. What puzzles me is if a cheap "universal remote" can learn these keys, can you buy/make something internet connected that does. The lowest tech solution would be a Wallace and gromit style motorised internet connected finger pushy thing to hit the button of a cloned key in the house. OR working backwards trigger that switch on a circuit. Or integrate it all into one device. Does this make sense? Does it exist? If not, why? And can we build one (raspberry pi etc?) (Context: I have a big slow gate that takes 45 seconds to open. I'm not in Thunderbirds but still, life's short. I want to open it from further than the remote range and do garage at the same time using a routine. I don't want a wired option as I'm trying to control two devices, one outside. Plus also, wired? When it works by remote? We can do better) [link] [comments]
Interaction of motion/presence sensors and explicitly set modes/scenes Posted: 19 Apr 2021 11:00 AM PDT If I have lights set to trigger based on motion sensors, then change the lighting manually using a voice command, am I going to end up in a state where the motion sensors and manual scene end up fighting each other? Can I setup the system so the motion tracker does different things depending on what scene is active? Like "if lights off, set lights to normal. If lights in "mood", do not change lights" etc. [link] [comments]
Best LED strips that wont break on me? Posted: 19 Apr 2021 04:23 PM PDT I got the govee led strips and i knew they weren't gonna be too good as soon as i got them. They felt super thin and didn't feel like they were gonna hold up at all but i used them anyway. Fast forward a few months to today where sure enough, they died on me. Any recommendations for a good quality, reliable, bright LED strip that isn't too expensive? Edit: I want them to be RGB and i don't mind if you can control them via phone or remote [link] [comments]
Alternate between 2 devices with a simple WiFi-switch? Posted: 19 Apr 2021 09:26 AM PDT Since I'm a total noob concerning home automation I thought I'd ask you guys: I have device1 that is running (230V). I want to activate a switch which turns device1 off and turns device2 on at the same moment. So a simple switch that switches between two devices. I'm looking for an easy way to solve this and the switch must be triggered by wifi. The needed software should run on a Windows computer. What is the easiest way to achieve this? I have no idea about the different systems and manufacturers. Thx in advance! [link] [comments]
Spring loaded tube blind conversion to motor? Posted: 19 Apr 2021 02:58 PM PDT My new house came with a very nice looking blackout roller blind (shade) in the family room window. I've build a home theater in there with automations handling turning the projector and sound system on, drop down the screen, putting lights into scenes over time etc and I'd like to automate closing the blind as well. Its the spring loaded style of pull down blind compatible with tube motors if I remove the locking pawl/spring mechanism? Hoping someone has gone down this road before me, as I tend to be short on time for projects. I'd like to get a basic RF controlled tube motor and tie it into the Broadlink that I have doing my IR/RF right now for the rest of the automations. [link] [comments]
Issue with Aeotec Door/Window Sensor 7 (ZWA008-A) Posted: 19 Apr 2021 10:32 AM PDT Has anyone else experienced an issue with these sensors where they don't "wake up" to register that they've been closed after being open for several minutes or more? I installed these sensors on my doors this winter and only noticed this problem when the weather warmed up and I started leaving my patio door open. After leaving the door open for a while and closing the door, the sensor doesn't register that the magnet is right next to it (the LED on the sensor doesn't even blink). I have to open and close the door again for it to register. I thought maybe I just had a defective sensor, but this morning I left my front door open for several minutes to test that sensor. It did the exact same thing. Sensor right next to the magnet and nothing happened. I had to open/close the door again for it to wake up and update. Any suggestions on a fix? [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Apr 2021 12:57 PM PDT I bought a house with a heating system that does not support room thermostats. It has underfloor heating with an internal thermostat that keeps the water temperature at 45 degrees Centigrade. I wanted proper heat regulation as the house was getting too hot (the previous owners were elderly and didn't seem to mind) so I currently have a Nest thermostat linked to a Philips Hue smart plug with two IFTTT triggers, but I'm not happy with this situation as it relies on internet which can be an issue here. What I'd like is a relay that I can hook up to the Nest Heatlink (this is European Nest, mind you) that delivers 220v to the burner as soon as the Nest Heatlink closes the circuit. Does anyone have reccommendations for this type of relay? [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Apr 2021 12:49 PM PDT https://i.imgur.com/IY7EQwm.jpg Any smart locks compatible with this type of gate lock? It doesn't even really need full smart capabilities. I need it to not be locked during the day time and then at some time I set in the evening to become locked. And I also need it to not open from the inside when locked so someone can't just slip their hand behind the door and open it when its locked. I tried some googling but not really finding any good options. [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Apr 2021 11:50 AM PDT I'm looking for the speed setting for "medium_high" I'm able to set:
But there's an additional value inside the Lutron app, that is Medium-High. When I query the state after setting it via the Lutron app they both have the same data, even though the fan speed does actually change. [link] [comments]
