Smart bulb or Smart bulb socket adapter... Posted: 16 Apr 2021 07:43 PM PDT I tried to look for a post with this question, but I'm very new to Reddit so please let me know if something's wrong. I rent a house built in 1910, so besides not wanting to pay for smart switches, I doubt there are any neutral wires. Everything in the house is obviously old which makes me think smart light bulbs aren't the answer. Leaving the switches "On" doesn't sound very good to me. Do you think I'm better off buying smart lightbulb socket adapters instead of switches or bulbs? Any suggestions on a certain brand? I'm using Google assistant and running everything through that or my phone using a smart IR device. I'm not tech savvy at all. I really do appreciate any time, help or advice you can share! Thanks [link] [comments]
Humidity fan for shower (anyone else have this problem?) Posted: 16 Apr 2021 07:19 PM PDT I always forget to turn on my bathroom fan when I take a shower and it ends up heating up the bathroom and the bedroom. I want to automate my bathroom fan to start when the humidity level increases from the shower. I need a device that monitors humidity and can trigger the switch to turn on the fan. I plan on replacing the fan switch with a Lutron switch (all my smart switches are Lutron). The problem is I can't seem to find a reliable humidity sensor that works with SmartThings. Any suggestions? [link] [comments]
Budget smart blinds with variable settings. Posted: 16 Apr 2021 10:27 PM PDT So I live in an apartment with my own room and the window is massive, which is great. But the shade cord is behind a dresser and the shades themselves are super heavy and annoying. I'd like to install some kind of smart blinds, but I feel like I'm looking for a number of requirements that I don't really see a ton of. Not super expensive. I'm not going to put a price limit, but I'm hoping to not blow my budget [good bot for spotting that]. Variable lighting control. What I mean by this is that I want it to be possible to totally black out the room for sleeping, open it completely, or have an in-between setting. The two possibilities I'm aware of are zebra blinds (strongly considering getting one with a beaded chain and automating it) or sheer shades. I think the latter would be harder to automate myself, but I see some options online. The reason I need this is because I love natural light, but right in the middle of the afternoon, the sun just blasts through my window as I'm working at my desk. These factors preclude things like roller shades, which is annoying because they're the most affordable looking. Allows automation of some kind (I use homebridge, node red, and will probably start homeassistant at some point). Nice to have: would love it to be easy to uninstall for if/when I inevitably move apartments. Anyone have thoughts on this? [link] [comments]
MimoLite as garage door opener Posted: 16 Apr 2021 03:19 PM PDT Does anyone have any experiences using a Fortrezz MimoLite to control a Chamberlain LiftMaster Elite Series garage door opener? This garage door opener works with myQ but I don't want to expose my home automation to the internet, so using the myQ app is out of the question. Having followed the wiring diagram, I can hear a solenoid being flipped inside the garage door opener when the MimoLite switch is activated, but this doesn't then cause the door opener to operate. So I'm thinking it must be something to do with the programming of the LiftMaster opener. This Liftmaster comes with a fancy "Smart Control Panel" in place of a standard dumb momentary switch, which I'm happy to toss out if necessary, but disconnecting this seems to make no difference to the MimoLite interaction with the door opener. Options for AC motor/Fan control Posted: 16 Apr 2021 02:48 PM PDT I've been looking for some input and help to figure out if I can automate a kitchen range hood fan. There are 3 speeds and what appears to be 6 wires coming out of the motor. I included a few pics of the wiring diagram for the whole hood, the model number of the hood, and some info on the motor. Ideally I would like to control the 3 fan speeds plus on/off over WiFi with HomeKit/Homebridge support. Any ideas and suggestions would be appreciated. https://imgur.com/a/Hy8bG39/ [link] [comments]

Door/Window sensor with wire to magnet sensor Posted: 16 Apr 2021 05:45 PM PDT I'm in the process of updating my system, and am replacing the old X10 DS10A Door/Window sensors. I have a couple of places (like garage doors) where I have upgraded the sensor/magnet combination and connected it to the wire coming from the DS10-A. Are there any z-wave or zigbee contact sensors that I can wire my already installed sensor/magnet to? [link] [comments]
Two light switches one smart switch Posted: 16 Apr 2021 05:18 PM PDT Fairly new to home automation so hoping you guys can help. Bought a smart switch just to dip my toes in a little but just realized that the hallway lights that I want to control , have switches on both ends of the hallway. I understand these are fairly cheap and I could buy another but am I likely to encounter any issues if I only use one smart switch? Will someone using the other switch mess things up? Logitech Harmony Hub and Google Home Mini hacking Posted: 16 Apr 2021 03:21 AM PDT Hi, I just received a Logitech Harmony Hub. It looks useful for getting rid of my IR remotes, but it doesn't fulfill my requirements for an iot device. Namely, it requires an account and internet connection, also, though I haven't tested it much yet, the app has horrible ratings. Is there any hacking that can be done or has been done to use it in an offline mode or similar? Anything helps. It seems in the past they were very poorly secured (blank root pw, ssh server...) but were updated since. I'm also using several Google Home Minis and their successor. I quite like it, but would prefer having more control over it. Have there been any hacking attempts recently? [link] [comments]
Does anyone have the 360 S7 Pro vacuum/mop combo? Posted: 16 Apr 2021 11:48 AM PDT I was looking at the Roborock S7 but unfortunately it's just out of my budget (and not available anyway). Does anyone have the 360 S7 Pro or another vacuum/mop combo in the $300 range? What are your thoughts? I am thinking of buying the extra 3-year $60 warranty from BestBuy to go with it... I never buy extended warranties, but i'm considering it in this case. I don't need to connect to any other systems or smart speakers, just plan to use it independently with the app. [link] [comments]
Posted: 16 Apr 2021 11:37 AM PDT I got the rm mini for my grandmas house so my family would be able to control her tv, sound and cable from their phones without having to be there. She has Alzheimer's and isn't able to work her remotes anymore but still enjoys watching TV. I saw this device recommended on a thread about Alzheimer's so I bought it. I got everything hooked up easy enough and functioning properly but then the TV became unresponsive shortly after. I disconnected everything and reinstalled it. It all functioned properly again so I left but by the next morning, the TV wasn't responding again. Cable and sound bar have never had an issue. Any ideas what is going on? [link] [comments]
Smart switch to control like 11 outside roller blinds sections? Posted: 16 Apr 2021 03:11 AM PDT So turns out I'll have to put 11 different sections of motorized outside roller blinds in my living room. While there is option the motor to be controlled by remotes (max 4 sections per remote, so it's not ideal) I would like to have a place on the wall for easy access, ideally to control all of them from 1 smart switch or something. The roller blinds smart switches I've found so far can control max of 2 blinds each, so placing 6 of those in a row is kinda ugly. So, is there a way to control all of them from just 1 switch? I'm aware I'll be able to control them by voice with google assistant but the idea is everything to be able to be controlled from a switch as well as a back-up and quick access, and also to be more guests friendly :) [link] [comments]
Mini D1 Garage Door Opener Issues Posted: 16 Apr 2021 02:39 PM PDT I just installed an ESP8266 Mini D1 garage door opener relay. Everything is working flawlessly with Home Assistant, but my physical buttons on my wall do not work anymore. I used to have a similar setup with an RPI and a relay and had no issues like this. Conceptually it doesn't make any sense to me why adding a relay would cause the wall switches to not work anymore. I have set it up on 2 different openers and have the same issues with both. Neither wall switches work. Any help would be greatly appreciated on what might be causing this, or even better yet how I can fix it so the wall switches work again. I followed this physical setup. https://raw.githubusercontent.com/johnboiles/esp-garage-opener/assets/images/fritzing.png [link] [comments]

Insteon, LEDs, no neutral wire Posted: 16 Apr 2021 02:03 PM PDT I started putting together an Insteon system because I liked the dual powerline/wireless aspect and (to a lesser extent) the X10 support. (I still have a few X10 devices, but ideally I would replace those too) I'd rather avoid 2.4Ghz-based things because that band is ridiculously crowded in this urban environment. My building was built in the 1920s and had electrical wiring updated in the 1970s. I thought I had some wall switches with no neutral but it turns out NONE of them have a neutral. :( I bought a 2474DWH switch as an initial wallswitch test, which works without neutral but I didn't realize it's not supposed to be used with LEDs at all. I was planning to use this with a fixture currently containing 3 - 17 watt modern, dimmable Cree A19 LEDs, so perhaps this will be OK because of the higher wattage? It dims fine with my X10 dimmer switch. But now I don't know what to do with the rest of the house that uses lower power LEDs. Can I try using a bypass capacitor as some switch vendors seem to recommend? Thanks for your ideas. [link] [comments]
Best wired 4k security camera system for at least 16 cameras with live HDMI view + recording? Posted: 16 Apr 2021 12:45 AM PDT I want a great security camera system around my house. 4k, decent low light, decent ability to playback, 16+ cameras, live HDMI view (very important). I'm willing to pay for a quality long-term solution that gives me everything I want. Right now I have a mix of wired analog running over hair-thin crap wires that came with an old DVR, a few medium resolution cams running via PoE, and a few 4k Amcrests. The Amcrest quality is super nice so far and even maintains showing color even when it's super dark so that's kind of my benchmark for quality I like. I like dome cams since I think they look nicer on the house. I'm willing to run all new ethernet all over the place since that seems like the best solution and more long-term. I have giant screens around my house that show the live feed of the security cameras. I LOVE that and have to have that ability. I've thought about getting the highest powered 16 channel Amcrest NVR and lots of those but not sure if there's something out there better, especially in terms of things like playback. My current old security DVR is a nightmare to try and find footage on and has even failed to record some stuff. Some of the PoE units I have are "okay" in that regard. I _LOVE_ the video scrubbing feature for my Nest Doorbell. It's smooth like butter and makes finding events SO easy. I'd pay a premium for that kind of video searching capability! Unifi stuff looks really cool, including super fast video scrubbing, but the cameras are not only expensive but always out of stock and have some bad reviews. Most importantly it doesn't have a GOOD way to live view the cameras over HDMI. Blue Iris seems powerful and I'm a tech pro BUT at the same time it sounds like a pain to deal with. Even trying to figure out the specs to build a PC to run it optimally has been annoying. Reolink NVRs and cameras seem to get good Amazon reviews too but there's more proprietary stuff. I don't have much upload bandwidth so I can't do all-cloud solutions. Thanks so much in advance for thoughts! [link] [comments]
Posted: 16 Apr 2021 09:14 AM PDT Update and additional question, so I don't litter with new thread: I was recommended Remotec Z-Wave Plus to IR Extender for AC Conditioners – ZXT-600 on another forum. Did anyone ever use this one? Pair it with any home automation hub, particularly HomeSeer? It's pricey so I'd like to know if someone used it before I buy. Thank you! I'm easily finding IR "universal remotes" and blasters that are WiFi, but I can't seem to find much on a Zigbee or Z-Wave one. Could someone please recommend one? I'm looking to control AC and ceiling fan. I found info about Somfy brand and Open Park brand IR blasters, but both appear to be discontinued (or nowhere on sale in the US). Thank you. Tuya local key post Mar 24 2021 without Android root? Posted: 16 Apr 2021 02:11 AM PDT Hi all, I'm trying to get my local key for some plugs and annoyingly just missed the 24 March change! I don't have access to a rooted Android phone and this seems to be the only way I can see that remains to do it at this time? Seems like the other ways I can find (Ucomen/Charles, Tuya IoT account) have dried up... Am I missing something? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Motion detector with outlet through glass? Posted: 16 Apr 2021 12:26 PM PDT I'm looking for the solution to a silly problem. I'd like a motion detector like this to work through glass, it does not have to reach far, even 2-3 feet would be fine- anyone know of a possible solution? I'd like a reliable 'someone is standing there' outlet to power some toys when a customer is outside the shop [link] [comments] |
