Hair tangling: Roborock S5 vs Xiaomi Mop Pro

    Posted: 18 Apr 2021 12:12 AM PDT

I'm in the market for a robot that vacuums and mops at the same time.

I found my two finalist: Roborock S5 and Xiaomi Mop Pro (both below $500).

I will use the robot mainly to collect long human hair (yep, my loved one loses a bunch).

Which of the two will give me less hassle with tangling?

Or, am I perhaps missing better models to tack this issue?

Home security + DIY smart home in Toronto, Canada

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 11:51 PM PDT

Looking into service-agnostic devices and my mind is going crazy. Only thing I found is I could put devices together via smartthings, but now seeing that it's being discontinued.

Came close to Frontpoint security but monitoring is like $50 p/m + their devices might not work with other stuff in future. That'd be the same as my old Rogers smart home devices that are collecting dust lol

Goals: Devices like outdoor camera, touchscreen panels, along with the standard stuff with a professional security monitoring company.

    Would love some help please!

    Smart switch w/ dumb-not-so-dumb fallback

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 10:47 AM PDT

    Hi there!

I'm planning the home automation solution for the house I'm building. I'll wire the whole house with Cat6 and PoE for the various devices that will join the network of appliances that I want to integrate into HomeAssistant.

I'm a little stuck on the lighting & smart switches topic... I searched quite extensively but either I've lost my touch with Google or there are no solutions like the one I'd like.

I'm here pleading for help from the Reddit Sages!! :)

    In brief my requirements:

    • able to be "smart": send the status of the relative light, receive command to switch on/off
    • able to be "dumb": the "clicking" (standard rocker, touch, whatever) should be able to switch on/off the light even if the IT infrastructure managing the "smart home" is down
    • it's electrically wired to the light it operates in the "dumb" mode
    • [very very preferable] "wired" for net communications (wireless add a series of hurdles I'd like to avoid altogether)

The solution I'm searching should be something like this:

    • the switch should have a "smart core" that "listen" to network messages, broadcast the status and can receive the "physical input" from the mechanical switch
    • can be locally programmed to understand what to do when the mechanical switch is operated:
      • can interact with HomeAssistant
      • can switch on/off the electrically wired light
      • both the above

A friend of mine created a solution with KNX: all lights wired to central panel, all switches wired (TP) to central panel, controllers/hubs in the central panel to get imputs from switched and to "operate" the light actuators... it's basically a "star" architecture: I do not like of that mainly that there is no "dumb" fallback.

...I guess that's it... let me know if it's not clear!

EDIT: I notice I forgot to mention I'm in EU... 240V

Inovelli Black Series Switches are sale now for $25/28

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 05:30 PM PDT

Sounds like they are getting rid of the Black series stock to focus on their Red series?

You can pick up their on/off for $25 and the dimmers for $27.50.

I do not have any Inovelli switches, but I've heard good things so thought someone out there might be interested?

    ikea fyrtur battery space requirements

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 09:03 PM PDT

Hi folks, I want to install these in my basement, and want to hide them within a bulkhead (need the bulkhead anyway, and need the height).

Now my question: how much space will I need to be able to open the battery enclosure? If someone has the measurements from wall to open battery, that would be great!

    Thanks!

Can a Lutron Pico remote control multiple Alexa lights?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 08:49 PM PDT

    Hey everyone!

I'm devising a setup for an older house where some of the outlets/lights don't have a neutral wire. There's already a couple Lutron lights set up on the old wiring and a couple Smart Life/Alexa controlled switches/lights around the house where neutral is available.

I was wondering if a Lutron Pico remote can control multiple Alexa/Smart Life outlets or lights?

What is Better, Professional Installation? Or DIY projects

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 08:31 PM PDT

I have the luxury of moving into a new large home, and I came across this video. I am a person who is very tech literate, and I know a lot about home automation considering I have a home assistant raspberry Pi personal setup in my old home. So I have a hard time thinking about if I should hire a professional all round system, are there any advantages and disadvantages of this setup?

Hi, quick motion sensor question pls!

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 07:27 PM PDT

    Hi,

For SmartThings or another platform, I am trying to figure out if I can use a z-wave motion sensor to trigger a light this way:

    • IF [No motion] during [x time]
    • THEN [turn OFF] [Light XYZ]

Is the duration of NO motion a possible trigger?

    Many thanks

What is the state of Smart Homes in Australia?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 07:21 PM PDT

Been doing a bit of Googling about smart homes and found the occasional thread from someone in Australia. But most of them are at least 1-2 years old. So I was wondering if things have changed much since then.

I think I'd like to get Smart Switches instead of replacing individual light bulbs. Are there any companies to avoid/recommend?

Any other tips/tricks I should look into. Currently in the process of building a new house so if there's anything I should ask the builders to do?

Or even if people could just share what they've done what kind of stuff they have made 'smart'. At this point all I really know I want to do is the lights. But I'd be up for getting more ideas.

    Which smart bulbs to use?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 05:08 PM PDT

So I have been diving into smart bulbs over the past year and have about a dozen Phillips hue and I love them for Setting the Mood with dungeons and dragons with the OnSwitch app. However the color bulbs are spendy and I'd like to get more bang for my buck with some extended flexibility.

    My question is twofold.

One. Are there any bulbs out there that work with the Phillips hue bridge so I can keep using my existing hardware?

Two. Are there any smart bulbs that report to a central hub/WiFi so I could program them to respond like Phillips hue from anywhere in the house. I love being able to shut off lights from across the house without having to be within 30 feet

    Thanks in advance.

    DEVICE BUYERS GUIDE

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 10:14 AM PDT

    Dear smart-people

I've been spending the last hours trying to find a guide, but without luck. Therefore I'm writing now - if there already is a thread, please redirect me and delete this one.

OKAY. I'm new in this world. Just got a new (my first actually( house and I've been dying to begin a smart home. BUT. I have no idea where to start - all I know is I want House Assistant (right?).

Starting out, my main focus is not to be "smart" but to be more efficient in the way I spend power. Therefore I want to hear if there is any kind of "buyers guide" or if any of you could tell me what devices are best. I'm thinking thermostats, air quality and what do I know.

Honestly I would just love to hear what are the best devices to save money and create a better indoor climate.

    Hope you can help.

PS. I live in Denmark if that matters.

    Tuya/Smartlife Wifi Door Sensor Setup

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 03:56 PM PDT

    Hi!

It's my first post here, so excuse me if I am missing any rules...

I've just bought this wifi door sensor from Tuya/Smartlife and I can't set it up.

I click add new device -> select contact sensor -> type wifi info -> insert the batteries -> reset -> click to search -> nothing happens :(

I've tried new batteries, reset it a couple of times, tried both ez mode and ap mode... It just doesn't show up when I try to add it to the Smartlife app. Am I missing any steps?

Best WiFi-enabled power receptacle that works with HomeBridge and Home Assistant

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 10:48 AM PDT

I am in need of a WiFi enabled smart power receptacle with USB charging ports. I see many options out there on Amazon but I am not sure which brand is the 'best' (meaning they have integrations with many home automation systems and their mobile apps are cool).

I could of course find a smart-plug and use that, but it looks terrible and requires a three-prong receptacle which I do not have in some of my old outlets. I purchased this home and need to upgrade receptacles so why not go with smart receptacles anyway that will allow me to control the outlets via app and home automation software, set timers, and possibly see the power draw.

I use Home Assistant but now trying out Homebridge.

    My lights are Sengled.

I have WiFi capable of handling the plugs.

Need help with light switch solution

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 09:44 AM PDT

    Hi,

Anyone out there know if i can use or these is a product that i can trigger with a relay to switch the power of a light swith on/off.

Ideally it would be a light switch that can function as regular switch but also be controlled by a relay. If such a thing doesn't exist then a device that can be added to achieve the same result?

    Thanks!
