Our house has this Home Pro Networx security system, but we don't really care about the security monitoring. Since every door/window is hardwired sensors, can we just pull the signal from this system into HA or something else?

    Noisemaker/Alarm for IFTTT

    Posted: 12 Apr 2021 07:06 PM PDT

I'm looking for a device that I can plug into a Wemo or Hue Smart Plug that I can activate via IFTTT to make a loud noise to wake me up when I get an emergent text message. Would like something that will turn off after a few minutes as to not drive my neighbors crazy, especially if it goes off when I'm not home.

Need a remote battery/solar camera with USB recommendation for watching catching mailbox thief.

    Posted: 12 Apr 2021 12:03 PM PDT

The mailboxes for my community are on a dirt road kind of away from all the houses. There's no WiFi or power at the mailboxes. Every two weeks or so someone breaks into the mailboxes at night. I need a camera recommendation that I can place somewhere near the mailboxes to get the thief on camera

Digital photo frame that can displayed shared Google photo albums not created by frame owner? Considering Nixplay Seed / Nixplay Smart.

    Posted: 12 Apr 2021 10:43 AM PDT

Looking for a digital photo frame that can do the following:

    • Display the contents of a Google photo album that is *not* owned by the frame owner; the album is just shared with the frame owner.
      • (In my case, I have a google album with pictures of my kid; the album is shared with the child's grandparents. I regularly share photos of my kid to a shared google album that I own so that the grandparents can view the photos on their phones. I do not want to duplicate the effort to also share the same photos to a second google album owned by the grandparents to get photos on the digital picture frame. I would like the grandparents to own a digital frame that can display the contents of the album that I'm already sharing with them.)

    • No smart assistant capabilities (anything like Alexa or Siri) due to recipients' privacy concerns. I am willing to pay more for this. This rules out Google Home Hub (yes, I am aware that there is a switch to disable the microphone but it appears the physical switch links to a software switch and not a hardware switch).

I am currently looking at the Nixplay Seed / Nixplay Smart photo frames but it is unclear if the albums that it displays from need to be Google albums owned by the frame owner or if they can be Google albums that are shared with the frame owner but owned by someone else.

Can any Nixplay owners comment on whether the Google albums that are displayed must be also owned by the frame owner?

I am open to other options as long as they fulfill the two requirements listed above.

How to save temperature and humidity history automatically

    Posted: 12 Apr 2021 08:36 PM PDT

I have the HTS2 temperature and humidity sensor and the broadlink app shows the last 24 hours of the readings.

I was wondering how i can keep a permanent history of this data.
Is is possible to automate this from the broadlink app or through google home?

Harmony hub - still worth a buy?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2021 11:32 AM PDT

As in the title, is it still worth buying the hub to integrate it with home assistant considering Logitech's recent announcement? If Logitech completely stops supporting the device does it become a paper weight or local access is possible/enough?

2-wire heat only thermostat to HA?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2021 10:18 AM PDT

I'd love to be able to control my heat-only 2-wire thermostat (R, W) from Home Assistant. I'm happy to connect via wifi or any local protocol. Any suggestions (besides install a c-wire)?

Is it possible to have 2 BAF synched?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2021 10:47 AM PDT

Long time reader, first time poster.

I recently bought Haiku L series smart Fran from BAF for my kitchen and wanted to update the fans of my home's vaulted ceiling. Is it possible to connect two BAF to the same electrical circuit, like the "dumb" fans I have now, or even connect it to the same BAF controller? I haven't been able to find much info on this, and my previous experience with the manufacturer makes me believe this may be a better way about getting an answer.

What is the most modular/bare bones automation system UI?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2021 06:15 PM PDT

Hello all. I am going to soon be a home owner and I wanted to know about a few customizable automation systems. I don't want to really deal with amazon echo or google home as (no offense at all) it seems very "consumer" level. My dad currently uses Alexa in their home and it feels a bit gimmicky. I just want something that I have complete control of the inputs (voice, scheduled, gesture) and outputs(outlets, switches, etc). I've done an unsafe version in my apartment during college years using microcontrollers, but my knowledge is limited when it comes to an interactive UI. I would really like to have touch screen control panels throughout the house .

    Smart whole home fan?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2021 05:38 PM PDT

I have one of those big whole home fans in my attic. What could I use for to make it smart? It has 4 speeds and I've heard that because it's a big fan like that I can't use a normal switch because it takes more energy to start it or something like that and I'd burn out a normal smart switch.

Aqara cube only compatible with certain Aqara hubs?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2021 10:49 AM PDT

I'm sure you all know the cube. I purchased one not realising it required a hub.

I'd like to use it to control a few Xiaomi smart light bulbs I purchased, but I didn't realise a hub would be necessary.

So I went shopping and noticed two Aqara hubs were available at roughly the same price:

This one with a smart sensor set included.

This one without any other accessories.

They looked the same so I figured they must be the same, yet when I installed the former (the smart sensor set) and set up my cube, the Xiaomi app tells me the cube isn't compatible with the hub.

My question is is this correct or have I made a mistake somewhere, and will the other hub I've linked to do the job? Why are they different whilst looking identical?

Open door sensor for beverage fridge

    Posted: 12 Apr 2021 11:10 AM PDT

I am trying to find a sensor that I can use to monitor when the door on my beverage cooler has been left open. I have a number of universal sensors but they are all fairly large. Has anyone here had any luck doing this?

Any idea for a smart doorbell that stores to a local storage device?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2021 10:53 AM PDT

I currently have a UniFi Dream Machine Pro, so it made sense to pick up the G3 doorbell. It stores locally to the device and works well with the ecosystem. The issue is that my house is pretty old and doesn't have wiring for a doorbell. Well after trying to wire it up, I just couldn't get it to work. I was looking to see if there are any smart doorbell manufactures that store locally (to something like a FreeNas machine) that can also be wireless?

I know this is asking a lot, but might as well throw it out there.

Best smart plates for a big room?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2021 08:40 AM PDT

My fiance and I just bought our first home and it has beautiful recessed lighting. I don't want to have individual smart bulbs (like we had in our apartments) but instead have plates on the switches to control the whole room/group of lights. What brand would be best to connect with Alexa (downstairs) and Google Home (upstairs)?

Can anyone recommend a short E26 that won't buzz when dimming?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2021 08:31 AM PDT

I added some Inovelli Red Dimmers and I've got a couple bulbs that are buzzing now. They did not buzz with the old dimmer, but apparently the problem is due to Inovelli using a Mosfet type switch. The old dimmer was likely Triac. I don't understand the difference and bulbs don't seem to be labeled that way, but I need a few bulbs and they need to be low profile to fit into the ceiling fan housing.

    Options for smart driveway arm?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2021 07:52 AM PDT

I want to discourage delivery vehicles from pulling up our driveway. The plan is to put a parcel box at bottom of driveway, but I need to discourage drivers from pulling in or they might not notice the box.

I am hoping to avoid a full on driveway gate and just have an arm that pops down like a toll gate. The only info I have found on barrier arms seem to be for high volume commercial hardware.

Are there simple and cost effective options to rig up an arm that could be triggered by a sensor and/or buttons?

    Thanks!

Health and meta-monitoring of home automation networks.

    Posted: 12 Apr 2021 07:47 AM PDT

I have a "smart" home. It's 90% custom firmware devices and self hosted infrastructure. Circa 20-30 devices/sensors, ESP32/8266, SOnOff, Shelly, MQTT, Zigbee2Mqtt, HTTP, Python scripting, docker and so on. Hue bulbs <spit, spit>

I have the pretty bells and whistles like using HA for UI and Influx/Grafana for graphing and visualisation of states/schedules etc.

The system is fairly solid with a few known bugs, but it's "Fault tolerant" is an odd way. It just doesn't care, it's completely tolerant of faults and just lets them be, shrugs and carries on.

    "Can't turn the heating on?"
    "Nope :("
"Aww well, try again next time, eh?"

And it will happily exist like that carrying on all day hoping to turn the heating on at some point.

Similarly if the living room temperature sensor goes offline, my system just forgets the living room even exists. When the sensor comes back online it's like it's found a whole new room and zone, it's very exciting.

All this is great and all for continued operation, even if reduced, but I would actually LIKE to know that the temperature sensor in the livingroom has not published to it's topic in more than 5 minutes. I would like to know the heating switch said "400 - Bad Request" because I have a bug in the controller. I would also like to know when these devices disappear offline and when they just stop sending data. etc. etc. etc.

So I am looking for ideas around some auto-discovery style, network health, heatmap, status list, alerting system. I don't need data collection or visualisation, I already can pull up the CPU graph and see it was pinned at 100% for 4 hours, what I am after is the thing that watches the CPU stats live and sends me a quick email or SMS (depending on the alert).

Kapacitor jumps out, but would force me to do everything "in-band" as it only supports time series database queries. I think it would also have limited support for alerts like, "Device last reported state ON 4 hours ago" when tracking state transitions and hung devices.

I'm going to end up writing it myself, aren't I?

I think writing custom plugins for an existing montioring solution which be better though, I just can't find one that can allow me to do everything from an "nmap port scan" to an MQTT stale message trigger and display me a "heatmap" view and fire out alerts.

What are other peoples ideas on what I'm calling "Meta-monitoring". Sure we all have device monitoring our homes, I meant the system monitoring them.

Lets talk about ceiling fans... AC vs DC motors and smart capability

    Posted: 12 Apr 2021 08:56 AM PDT

Okay, I've got a new construction house I've been in for a few months and I'm getting around to putting ceiling fans in places where currently there is just pre-wiring (with blocking), so I'm starting from scratch by purchasing a fan and getting it integrated with my smart home (SmartThings, Amazon Alexa).

I was really set on converting my house to Inovelli switches everywhere, but their fan control switch only supports AC motors. Most of the new trendy fans appear to be DC motors, which is the style I'm leaning towards (this fan specifically) because AC motor ceiling fans tend to be pull string and a little bulky and outdated looking.

Are there any smart switch solutions for DC motor fans? Or am I stuck with whatever the manufacturer provides (usually a remote and a wall plate/switch, maybe <yet another> phone app that usually isn't integrated to SmartThings or Alexa). I really would like something I can integrate with my SmartThings or directly with my Amazon ecosystem, so I can control it with the Alexa voice assistant and put it in scenes and routines. I had this in my previous house and used it frequently.

Also, just to get an idea of what /r/homeautomation is doing for ceiling fans, if you have a smart fan, I'd love to hear the model fan you're using and the smart solution you're using with it.
