Safely creating an LED strip project

    Posted: 14 Apr 2021 12:03 AM PDT

So after yesterday's scary post I've sort of freaked myself out.

I've just started creating some NodeMCU and led strip 150 led WS2182b projects to integrate into HA, but now I'm worried about how safe they are to use.

I was planning on using just the power via the USB port on the node MCU which seemed to be enough to power the strip I'm using.

Are there any good guides on how to SAFELY create an LED strip project? Last thing I want is an electrical fire!

    Shelly 1 - Wiring 240v Light Switch

    Hi All,

I have a Shelly 1 installed by a licensed AU electrician and am having some issues with it. I believe the sparky wired it up incorrectly so I have put together my diagram of what I believe it should be wired as that I want to suggest to him.

Can anyone see any issue with the wiring diagram of a Shelly 1 switch through a double power point (outlet) with extra switch - its the extra switch thats used for the light.

    Thanks.

Outdoor rope lighting solution that is compatible w/Control4

I'm looking for an outdoor rope lighting solution that will work with Control4. Approx. 75-100lf of lighting (lv or hv) and the moonshot wish would that it syncs with music. Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thank you!

    Dashboard for glorified light switch?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2021 01:06 PM PDT

I currently have a handful of WiFi-enabled light bulbs and switches that I manage with their respective apps and by voice with Alexa. I have gotten to the point that I would like something quasi-physical to control my lights with besides voice so I don't have to ask Alexa to turn on my office lights just to grab something off my desk and then have to ask her to turn them back off again. I don't have any other automation things going on as I do just live in a small apartment, but I do have an old android tablet that I can place in a convenient location for the whole apartment. Is there a way to easily set up some kind of dashboard to control the lights (basic function, but if possible also brightness level and color would be cool) without getting involved in something like setting up a HomeAssistant server or something like that? I am down for setting up a HomeAssistant server if that's the only way of setting up a simple and clean lightswitch dashboard, but if simpler solutions exist, that would be swell.

    Somfy Tahoma & Louvolite blinds

    Posted: 13 Apr 2021 12:37 PM PDT

I'm looking at getting some Louvolite blinds, which can be controlled by their own home hub (looks like a branded Neo Smart Blinds hub).

As I've also got a Velux window that can be controlled by a hub, which I know can also be controlled by the Somfy Tahoma hub. Does anyone know if the Louvolite blinds can be controlled by the Somfy?

I'm not sure the radios match, Neo Smart Blinds hub states 433.92MHz and I can't find a mention of RTS compatibility so I'm assuming not.

Wondered if anyone has managed to connect a different smart hub? I would like to consolidate home hubs for the blinds / windows (they seem to be duplicating all the time)

Single device to drive/dim/remote control LED strips?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2021 03:04 PM PDT

Trying to figure out the easiest/simplest/streamlined way of adding some LED strips to my kitchen cabinets. There is AC power nearby.

It seems like a lot of these need a separate power supply, dimmer, and control method, or at least some pair of devices. Have some lutron stuff, but looks like that would need both a $60 wall dimmer and a $100 led driver. Got all excited about the zooz zen31 but then it still needs a power supply and then it would never fit in a junction box.

Is there a (cheap) all-in-one box that takes AC power, zigbee/zwave/wifi/whatever control, and outputs dimmable/white balance-able LED strip power? Running HA so anything could work.

    Thanks for any ideas!

LED strip light sequence or animation

    Posted: 13 Apr 2021 11:18 AM PDT

I'm looking to set up a couple led strip lights that have a boot up sequence. Think similar to what the newer Audis do.

Unless it's trivial, it's not something I really want to DIY. I would rather purchase a ready to go product or commission a hobbiest to build it out.

What should I be searching for? Is there anything on the market that can do this out of the box or be programmed to do out of the box?

If it makes any difference this would be for an outdoor application powered by a 12V DC source.

I want to start a Smart Home Automation company (new to HA)

    Posted: 13 Apr 2021 02:59 PM PDT

So as the title says, I want to start a Smart Home Automation company. Recently I began reading about smart homes and got hooked up pretty quickly. Turning a regular home into an Intelligent one simply amazes me. I do believe this is a promising thing, as Smart Homes aren't that popular where I live. However, I do not have the proper tech knowledge (none at all) and I am still reading/researching. What are things I need to know and need to stress on?
Also, I see that some companies offering such services have a personal app. Isn't that excessive, as devices can be connected and controlled by already existing?
Any support is more than welcome!

    New Home suggestions

    Posted: 13 Apr 2021 11:10 AM PDT

    Hi all!

I'm currently in the planningphase for a completely new home and would like to integrate home automation from the start.

I'm based in Europe (NL) so my home is going to be constructed in stone and concrete, making cabling difficult after it's done

    What I have in mind:

    • KNX system to control:
      • Lights (In doubt between: DALI and DMX)
        • All with presence detectors ofcourse
      • Heatpump (Modbus)
      • Underfloor heating on a per room basis (0-10v motors with PID)
      • Ventilation (Modbus)
      • Smart Grid
        • Smart EV charging
        • Smart Heating, Cooling. (make optimal use of PV)
        • Some switched outlets: Bathroom towelheater, washingmachine, dryer, dishwasher, light in livingroom, possibily lights next to bed?
    • Ethernet in all rooms, (2x2 in living room to accomodate TV placement change + WiFi AP)
    • Ceiling speakers in the livingroom.
    • WiFi AP on each floor.
    • Conduit to top of all windows for motorized blinds (won't be installing them right now, I think)

    What I'd like to know:

    • DALI, DMX or something else still for lighting?
    • Any suggestions for more switched outlets?
    • Where to wire the ceiling speakers to? Technical room? or to dual wall outlets in livingroom?
    • Any general thing I may be overlooking?
    • Any cool ideas?

Input and constructive critisicm are greatly appreciated!

Go Pro Hero 5 as permanent webcam with home assistant and raspberry pi?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2021 02:39 PM PDT

I have an old Go Pro Hero 5 that's basically useless to me now, but thinking of turning it into a live webcam or something at home with home assistant on the raspberry pi.

Is this possible? I know the Go Pro supports RTMP live streaming.

    zigbee button

    Posted: 13 Apr 2021 02:28 PM PDT

Could someone please recommend reliable zigbee buttons?

I would like a physical switch to attach on the wall to control my zigbee plugs. I see many options online but it's hard to figure out differences.

I'm testing a Homeseer hub (recommended on this sub!).

    Thank you!

SONOFF iFan03 vs Insteon Ceiling Fan and Light Control Module

    Posted: 13 Apr 2021 02:25 PM PDT

I'm looking to make five dumb fans smart, the Bond blaster is too flaky as to whether or not it registers a hit so I keep getting into situations where the on/off is flipped.

I've seen the [Insteon receiver replacement](https://www.smarthome.com/products/fanlinc-insteon-2475f-ceiling-fan-and-light-controller-fixture-module-dual-band?variant=34316515016837) before, but I recently also found the [Sonoff](https://www.itead.cc/sonoff-ifan03-wifi-ceiling-fan-light-controller.html) version. Is there something wrong with the Sonoff? Why is it 20% the price of the Insteon product? Can I buy 5 of these or are they sketchy and going to burn my house down?

    Smartify HRV Controller

    Posted: 13 Apr 2021 12:52 PM PDT

I just moved to a new house and there is only one HRV Controller near the thermostat and none in the bathrooms. As well the controller doesn't have a timer on it. Just wondering if there are any solutions to put a timer on it and or activate it from my phone.

    Thanks!

Hey i am trying to decide which lock would be better for an interior door ( car garage door to inside )

Neither one is rated ansi grade 1.

I will be getting a Schlag encode for my front door. But the garage door will be my primary door used.

Which lock would you go with, Lockly or Ultraloq ??

I am Moving into a new house.

I really want a fingerprint reader that also has a backup physical key slot.

Comcast has installed fiber optic cable through out my neighborhood and I was wondering if in order to take advantage of the huge improvements that fiber optic offers, shouldn't my condo association replace all the old copper based cable that we used now with fiber optic cable?

Robot Vacuum Recommendation (Neato vs Roborock vs Your pick)

    Posted: 13 Apr 2021 03:42 AM PDT

    Hi r/homeautomation

I am looking to purchase my very first robot vacuum for which I hope you can provide me some guidance. I have been watching more Vacuum Wars on Youtube than I would care to admit and currently feel like Roborock and Neato provide good options. I had initially decided to wait for the new Neato D10, but considering the price, depreciation, and constant development within robot vacuums I decided to scale a bit back on budget. Therefore, I am now looking at the Neato D7 and the Roborock S6 MaxV. However, I am unsure of which one to chose and I was hoping some of you could provide more insight and personal experiences. I am also open to other suggestions within the same price range but I am located in Europe so options such as SharkIQ will be unavailable (at least for me).

    • The robot will only be cleaning hard floors and doormats.
    • A mop attachment is NOT a hard requirement but it is nice.
    • I live in a relatively large apartment but see myself moving to a larger place (house) within a few years and would like to be able to bring the robot vacuum along.
    • I currently have no pets or children but this will probably also be coming soon ;)
    • It should integrate with Google Home, and have the ability to do zone cleaning.
    • Must be somewhat intelligent with smart navigation.

Thank you in advance for your inputs :)

    [X-Post] Looking for a solution

    Posted: 13 Apr 2021 09:30 AM PDT

    Cross-Posted with r/smarthome

I want to be able to control the following with a single hub/app (alexa integration is really important, but I could forgo that if the app was good enough):

Vizio TV (2019 model - I don't care about the apps on it, I just want to control on/off, volume and input)

    Philips HUE lights

    August Smart Lock

GE Z-Wave Light Switch (this controls my attic fan)

Nice to be able to control:

    Nest Thermostat

    XBox1

Old Toshiba Regza TV (2010 model)

I have this all running on my Harmony Elite and Alexa, but Harmony is going away, so I need to start making plans to move off of it.

I am still doing research, but I thought I would post here in case anyone already knew of a good solution.

The real tangle in all this is the Z-Wave light switch. That usually disqualifies a lot decent solutions (like Sofabaton). So, any help would be greatly appreciated.
