New construction: How to prepare a house for the future?

    Posted: 24 May 2020 12:20 PM PDT

Prior to construction, I am guessing a few things to do or plan for:

    • Make sure there is enough networking cables to the far reaches, so that things that might be out of range of wireless can be extended or reached.
    • Make sure there is power available near things that might be automated, such as security cameras, smart blinds, etc. (I am unsure what power requirements, though)
    • Plan for 2 relatively separate networks. One that is high security and not connected to the Internet, and another that contains items that need to be connected to the Internet. (E.g. so security cameras over hot tub are not hackable, but security camera looking down driveway can still be accessed remotely.)

What else? I especially want to make sure that anything that requires poking holes in walls or similar occurs before the sheet rock is put down.

Thoughts? brainstorms? Concerns? Links to resources? Thanks!

    Hobby or chore?

    Posted: 24 May 2020 10:17 AM PDT

I'm really starting to rethink this entire smart home thing.

I have about a hundred smart devices, from approximately 15 vendors, spread out throughout the house.

    Security is 100% automated.
    Lighting is about 95% automated.
    Media is about 95% automated.

Of course, by automated , i mean not needing my interaction in any way.

I woke up today, went in to the bathroom,

    1) Product: SmartTings (ST), Fibaro sensor, Wemo swicth (WE)
    Trigger: Motion
    Expecting: Light to turn on
Outcome: Turned on, but 2 minutes late

    2) Product: Google Home (GH), Wemo switch
Trigger: "I'm done with the shower"
Expecting: Turn off lights, stop playing media on GH speaker
Outcome: GH replies "I'll be here"

    3) Product: ST, WE
Trigger: Switch off 1 bathroom light
Expecting: Turn off 2 bathroom lights
Outcome: Only 1 light turns off

I go downstairs to make breakfast,

    4) Product: GH
    Trigger: "Play the news"
Expecting: Kitchen GH smart display to play the news
Outcome: Plays the news in the adjacent dining room GH speaker

Go to dining room to eat,

    5) Product: GH
Trigger: "play the news about Space X"
Expecting: The news is currently playing on Chromecast on my TV. I'm expecting the topic to change.
Outcome: While the news is still playing on the TV, the GH speaker starts playing the news about Space X.

    6) Product: WE, something else
Issue: Notice that one my GH speaker is off, it is connected to a WE switch.
Expecting: The GH speaker to be on.
Outcome: Some product by some vendor is turning off my GH speaker and I cannot figure out what it is. It is both frustrating and a product of using too many vendors.

    5) Product: GH, Harmony, IFTTT
    Trigger: "Watch TV"
Expecting: Switch input on TV and amplifier
    Outcome: Nothing

I then find out that two of my contact sensors need new batteries and that one of my Arlo camera is disconnected.

Every automation that a mentioned used to work properly.

I have now been awake for 40 minutes.

Aren't hobbies supposed to be fun?

What's the best vacuum robot for a large floor plan?

    Posted: 24 May 2020 07:44 AM PDT

I want it big to vacuum a large floor plan fast. I don't care if it's loud or can go under furniture. On the same note, why are all vacuum robots relatively the same size? No one thought of making a bigger robot with a bigger battery. I'm sure people with large houses will buy it.

    Inexpensive automatic shades/blinds

    Posted: 24 May 2020 05:37 AM PDT

I'm looking for inexpensive automatic shades. I want them to open in the morning and close in the afternoon. The purpose is to keep a room cool for bedtime. Right now that's the hottest room in the house and has a very hot sensitive kid in it.

I figure I can control them with a Shelly 2.5. But what shades should I look at? Even the manual ones are pretty expensive. I know nothing of electric powered shades/blinds.

    Fingerprint Main Door

    Posted: 24 May 2020 11:10 AM PDT

So I would like a smart lock system for my house that is under construction and two of my requirements are:

    1. Support for the traditional Physical Key as backup
    2. Fingerprint unlock

I looked at many vendors but i did not like any for one reason or other. The one that i like most is the Ener-J ( https://www.ener-j.co.uk/products/view/independent-wifi-iot-solutions/wifi-smart-door-lock-silver-body-right-handle/99163 ).

I however am also considering implementing a fingerprint reader connected to an arduino and published on MQTT that when authenticated it will unlock through an electric strike lock.

I am looking for opinions - my main concern if i had to do mine is if the fingerprint reading ends up not working most of the time due to finger having to be exact position etc. Anyone has experience with good, reliable fingerprint readers compatible with Arduino/ESP? Cost is not that much of an issue.

Multi room sound and multi channel receiver.

    Posted: 24 May 2020 08:46 PM PDT

Hi, I was just planning to make multi room audio system in my new house using snapcast. I just went into a question with a receiver.

Example: listening to music over mopidy and my wife wants to turn on TV. How should I solve problem with changing audio input FROM mopidy to TV and change volume without mobile phone, HA, or etc...

Would be best with physical receiver. But also I want to be possible to change input from HA.

Anyone could get me on the way?

Looking for a "pixel free" ledstrip diffusion, will it be enough?

Looking for a "pixel free" ledstrip diffusion, will it be enough?

Hi folks, I've been working on my gaming room for more than a year and I'm starting to buy everything. My stuff is in his place, the arcade machine is on, but, without a good lightning, it doesn't look like in my old school dreams. I already posted sometimes here on Reddit talking about it, and finally took the option, of 6 2 meters LED strips that are going to go from one way to the other of room in some channel diffusers.

But I'm still not sure about one thing... will it be enough to have a neon look? Or will I have lightning points appearing here and there? I was planning to take this type of diffuser

    For below

    ![img](s3mik4g1sr051 "Aaand, up ")

    With 30 ledstrips/m (18 lumen/led)

But I'm starting to think that it won't be enough... Could someone with some experience give an advice to a noob who's spending a lot of money to make his dreams come true? Thanks in advance! By the way, The first picture wuz a 3D test of the project, which is my lightning goal (okay, maybe not everything in this color, but it's just to make an idea of the lightning!)

looking for a thermostat and deadbolt. possibly garage control as well.

    Posted: 24 May 2020 06:04 PM PDT

I'm already planning on setting up wyze cameras and plugs, and the next thing on my list is a thermostat.

I'm thinking of getting a smart deadbolt of some kind, but might just get a normal dumb one with a keypad, if there's still arguments over the security of them. (it's been some years since I've researched it)

also thinking of a garage door remote system ( with the same safety issues in mine).

might be open to a system that just kept history logs for the deadbolt and garage, without actually being able to be opened remotely as well, if that's even a thing.

(at some point I'll be looking into something to help monitor energy used by the whole house or by specific outlets, but that's going to be while before I start to care (if i ever do), but thought I might mention it)

I'm aiming for cheap or nor subscription costs. I don't mind paying more, if it's a one time payment. I'm really thinking about starting to pay for the service wyze offers.

I like the idea of not being tied down to one eco-system, but if there's one setup that makes the most sense for my situation, I'm open to it.

what do you guys think will be the best for me? or even just some good examples of what I should be researching first?

    IKEA Fyrtur Alternatives?

    Posted: 24 May 2020 09:08 AM PDT

I realize this had been asked here before but it gets quite confusing and specific plus I believe it may be outdated at this point.

I'm looking for an affordable, fairly out-of-the-box option of a motorized shade for a single window in my home. Criteria: - connect to SmartThings (preferably Z-Wave but that's not a big deal) - affordable (in the neighborhood of IKEA) - stylish (my wife was disappointed in the great only option of IKEA's offering) - battery or solar operated

I may be dreaming but I thought I'd ask the brain trust before giving up hope.

August Wi-Fi Smart Lock: Can I buy a deadbolt with a keypad?

    Posted: 24 May 2020 06:54 AM PDT

Hi all, I wanted to post this in r/AugustSmartLock but I see that you require mod approval before doing so.

Wife and I bought our first home and we're moving in next week. We'll be replacing all the locks so I thought it would save some $$$ if we bought a deadbolt that has a keypad, and then install the new August Wifi smart lock (the one without the bridge).

Is this possible? Or should I just buy a regular deadbolt, then get the August smart lock + the August keypad?

    Thanks!

My Koogeek light switch won’t turn on and won’t stop flashing green (LED)

    Posted: 24 May 2020 02:24 PM PDT

It no longer turns on the light on my ceiling. It's flashing green rapidly and I've tried to reset it by holding the reset button down and even shutting the breaker off.

Anyone have this happen to them? It won't appear on the HomeKit app nor the Koogeek app. It's the single wall switch

    Thanks!

Is there any open-source community hub for this field, besides this subreddit?

    Posted: 24 May 2020 10:34 AM PDT

I have never been a homeowner and still am not, so I haven't delved into this field as much as it does interest me (and yes, I realize renters can still make some QoL adjustments to their living space but it's not quite the same).

From some very cursory research (I'm admitting it's like 10 min max), I see some communities around the specific software libraries (as you can often find in open source software), and of course this subreddit. But I'm thinking more along the lines of a broad home automation community of its own, with an emphasis on DIY and minimizing commercial/"off-the-shelf" products (thinking of them more as components, where appropriate), but without explicitly endorsing any particular software or software library and rather to unbiasedly compare and contrast their benefits and limitations.

For example re: the commercial products, I did go over the subreddit guide and saw the comment about not being afraid of "dumb" products—I'd be perfectly fine with recommending and buying some of these but am staunchly opposed to putting a commercial spying device like Alexa in my home. Coupled with an overall desire to reduce dependence on such companies, I wonder if there is a community of like-minded people who could help each other out in the process of replacing any advantageous functionality these type of products might offer.

The open-source world doesn't, and shouldn't operate anything like a business, but rather as a knowledge center and tool of mutual cooperation. I totally get the spirit of "don't expect anything to be turnkey in this area", but let's also face the fact that the idea of designing, testing, and implementing a full-featured everything by yourself is extremely daunting. The purpose of helpful sharing of experience and knowledge is invaluable, and almost certainly the greatest gift the Internet has given us. If we could create some easy-to-follow self-guidance, that could be huge.

I look to this community with experience to tell me:

    • What has it found, if anything, in this area already? (Of course, outside this subreddit—and I do like Reddit communities—but Reddit totally sucks for searchability)
    • If there is no resource quite like it, what would you like to see in one and how would you organize it?

I'll say my programming skills are maayyyyybe "intermediate" at best. Perhaps "Advanced Beginner". I've made a few non-professional websites over the years and have dipped my feet in open source and a few projects, but I'm not a software developer by trade and also find it way too overwhelming to keep up with all the developments over the years, since I've been dabbling in and out for at least a decade. But my point here, is I'd be willing to work on it. But I know I'd also need help, as would tons of other people who could be valuable contributors to such a project.
