Curating a list of actually useful home automation ideas, including tutorials (~100 so far)

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 02:17 PM PDT

I've started curating a list of home automation ideas. Most of it so far is based upon the things I've actually built around the house, or want to build soon. And I just put these first ~100 ideas together this morning, so it's still growing/being refined.

There are tutorials for many of the ideas, though not all. But this means it has weaknesses in areas I've not yet tackled (automated gardening, for example). I'd happily add any additions you might have (via comments or DMs).

So you don't have to click the link, I'll paste the list here. But this is still pretty rough, and I won't be editing this post to keep it up to date with the above link.

    Lights and Lighting

    • Beginner
      • Install smart lights (Philips Hue, Lutron, or similar).
      • Use smart switches (Philips or Lutron) so power is never cut to the bulbs.
      • Turn on/off lights at certain times of the day.
      • Turn on hallway lights for a period of time after motion is detected.
      • Create different light scenes, like party or relax.
      • Create a kiosk for controlling lights and scenes with Home Assistant (or similar).
    • Intermediate
      • Turn on/off lights based upon who's home (see: Presence and Motion detection).
      • Add ambient lighting to a home theater (see: Movies and TV).
      • Make light fade in/out rather than switching on/off.
    • Advanced
      • Create "status lights" that change color to indicate when something important has happened, like when a guest arrives (see: Security and CCTV) or the garage door is left open.

    Sound and Music

    Movies and TV

    • Beginner
    • Intermediate
      • Store movies/TV on a DIY NAS.
      • Use ambilight to add a colorful pop behind the TV/screen.
      • Raise/lower a projector screen with a custom IR controller or wired connection.
      • Build a RetroPi (DIY video game system).
    • Advanced
      • Automatically open/close blinds/drapes when the TV turns on/off to improve lighting.

    Presence and Motion Detection

    Security and CCTV

    • Beginner
      • Integrate a security system like Nest or Arlo with Home Assistant.
      • Automatically re-lock doors after they are closed.
      • View all your cameras, regardless of brand, from anywhere in the world using MotionEye.
    • Intermediate
    • Advanced
      • Build your own DIY smart doorbell.
      • Use machine learning (DOODS/TensorFlow) to detect people, pets, cars, etc.
      • Add facial recognition to distinguish between guests.

    Temperature and Climate

    • Beginner
      • Automate smart thermostat (Nest, EcoBee, HoneyWell) with Home Assistant.
      • Save money by turning off heat/AC when nobody is home (see: Presence Detection).
      • Turn heat/AC back on before someone arrives home (see: Presence Detection).
    • Intermediate
    • Advanced
      • Build a DIY 3-zone thermostat.
      • Automatically open/close blinds/drapes.
      • Automate (de)humidifiers to control humidity levels.

    Family and Home-Care

    Internet and Home Networking

    Cars and Travel

    Appliances and Misc.

    • Beginner
      • Create morning/night automations for coffee pots,
      • Use the Harmony Home Hub (or similar) to control anything that uses a remote.
      • Turn on/off appliances automatically (see: Presence and Motion detection).
    • Intermediate
      • Monitor power usage with Grafana and Prometheus dashboards.
      • Conserve power by automatically shutting off unnecessary appliances.
      • Use IRC on a Raspberry Pi or Arduino to control anything that uses a remote.
      • Create a relay box for turning on/off power outlets.
    • Advanced

Has anyone successfully exposed their IKEA Fyrtur blinds to Alexa using node red? Absolute beginner looking for help.

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 06:27 PM PDT

I've integrated all my Fyrtur blinds into Home Assistant easy enough. I've also exposed all my lights to Alexa through Node Red. I'm an absolute beginner so all I've been able to do is copy paste my way to success using function nodes. I've also been able to automate the lights and shades using wyze sensors through node red.

I just can't figure out how to get Alexa to control my blinds. Which is to say, I haven't found any code to copy.

    I would appreciate any help.

Is there such thing as a simple HDMI Switch for 2 inputs & 2 outputs?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 08:04 PM PDT

And i dont mean a Matrix switch that'll display 1 source onto 2 displays at once. What I'm after feels a little unorthodox.

    I have a 55" tv, a 27" Computer Screen + a PC & a PS4.

All id ever want the switch to do is switch the output of the PC or PS4 to the tv or computer screen (essentially removing the HDMI from the back of either and switching them around but that's a pain in the ass to do frequently)

    is there such device?

    Irrigation controllers?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 10:35 PM PDT

I've been looking at various irrigation controllers, and have basically boiled it down to 3 (although I'm open to any and all suggestions otherwise)

    Rain8

    http://www.wgldesigns.com/rain8pc.html

This one looks like one of the older connected systems. Pretty interesting, but has a few downsides (that I can see)

    • Hardware control support (i.e. remotes) is minimal, with only Crestron really supporting it
    • Requires a connected computer to control it
    • Built atop RS232, which is a pro and a con. Debugging is easy (can use a buspirate) but also has to implement its own weird topology for daisy-chaining.
    • IRQ-like address system

It has integration with my HA package (homeseer), so it could work.

    EitherRain

    http://www.quicksmart.com/qs_etherrain.html

A newer offering, eithernet and IP based.

    • Again, minimal hardware control support
    • Unclear if requires connected computer, says scheduler sends to controller, but doesn't describe if controller is fully independent or only partially
    • Built atop eithernet and IP. Much easier to integrate into my existing system because of this

    Rachio

This one seems to be the most successful. Their product is glossy and support and service for it is likely to be readily available, should it fail.

    • Wide support, makes fixing/servicing/troubleshooting easier
    • Decent API, loads of plugins already exist and the API is simple enough to work with
    • No local control, forum post indicates it probably won't ever be coming

    Orbit B-Hive

Looks really slick, and its from a brand thats been doing irrigation stuff for a very long time. But there is no api, so its out of the running.

I'm currently torn between the EitherRain and Rachio. I like the local control EitherRain offers, but I also like the "big mover" advantage Rachio has.

New Contruction: Panelized vs. Wireless Smart Lighting questions

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 01:11 PM PDT

Hello everyone! We are planning our future smart home (1-2 years down the road, ~3000 sqft main house with a pair of separate ~1800 sqft workshop buildings, based in USA) and doing a ton of research into what features we would like to have and how best to go about getting there. This is the first of probably numerous questions I will ask over the coming months, so thanks in advance for any and all constructive feedback!

Background - I am an electrical engineer by degree, programmer by trade, and just general DIY, woodworking, electronics, design and do everything myself person.

Up front, if I can't install and manage my system myself, that is a total deal-breaker, period. So to my knowledge and understanding from pretty extensive research, that eliminates Control4 as an option (which is really a shame, I love the looks of their ecosystem).

Panelized vs. Wireless, not a new question, done a bunch of digging through this sub-reddit and several different manufacturer's available documentation and still come away with more questions than answers.

So for panelized solutions, the only other ones I know of are Lutron's HomeWorks/QS system and Vantage's systems.

For wireless solutions there seem to be a lot more options out there, but the more 'pro' level solutions seem to be Lutron's wireless QS or Radio RA2 and HomeSeer's system.

Questions I am having a hard time finding straight answers to:

1.) What other panalized systems are out there?

2.) How can you determine whether or not you can buy and install their products yourself or if they REQUIRE you to go through a dealer/installer (like Control4)?

3.) How can you get a price list for their componenets?

4.) I have seen a few people post comments on other threads here saying that panelized control boxes will die after 5-10 years and need to be replaced to the tune of many thousands of dollars. Is there any data to back this up? It seems to me like these 'pro' level systems should just work, pretty much indefinitely, just like you would expect a properly installed $0.75 light switch to just work.

5.) Anyone have experience with these other companies' programming interfaces for setting everything up? It seems like Control4's interface is pretty much drag-and-drop, but I haven't been able to find any kind of screenshots or documentation of for instance Lutron's programming interface.

6.) Anyone have recommendations for other high reliability wireless systems?

7.) What is the actual range on these wireless lighting systems? For instance if our main controller box is in the middle of the main house and we need it to also run light switches in the workshop buildings ~200 feet away and through several walls, will it be able to reach? If not, do you need separate controllers for each location it can't reach or can you get wired 'repeaters' to run underground between the buildings?

I think that's a good starting point. Thanks in advance! V

    Orbit BHyve: whats the trick?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 06:54 PM PDT

Have factory reset and re-seated ribbon cable several times, put it in pairing mode, my phone see's (via the app) bhyve's wireless network and connects to it, and I have turned off the "automatically connect to mobile networks if wifi has no internet connection"on my phone:

but no matter what I do I can't get the app to see any available wireless network (and yes, I have also put the home's wireless router close to the unit), and I also can't manually connect it to the home's wifi network by entering in the SSID, etc.

    Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

    Possible to detect cat meow?

Does anyone have a stand-alone alarm system integrated into Home Assistant?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 03:39 PM PDT

(yes i know r/homesecurity is generally better for this a but im specifically looking for something with good Home Assistant integration - im hoping others have gone down this path before me)

I'm looking for a home security system that will be standalone with its own keypad, etc (a traditional alarm system) but have the ability to be armed and disarmed and possibly pass motion and door contact sensor information onto Home Assistant.

I have (inherited with my house) a Concord 4 system that needs some work. (I have a dead motion sensor and need to buy the programming keypad) I have 12 wireless sensors (doors/windows/smokes) and 2 wired (a door and a window that were too far from the panel to be wireless i guess)

When I was on adt with the pulse system i was able to use the alarm system sensors to drive HA tasks through their Pulse Gateway. Im looking to do something similar.

    Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks

LA400 Gate Opener keypads and other automation options?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 02:59 PM PDT

I just got a new automatic gate with the LA400 opener

The gate works great, and I can use the app

But I'm wondering if there is anything I can do to shoehorn in a Z-Wave piece so I can control it however I want? There is a ton of contacts and stuff on the inside. Its GOT TO be possible

House full of cree connected bulbs, new hub?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 02:12 PM PDT

Hi all. I've had a v1 hue hub for about 5 years now. My life has been chaos so I had no idea it was being discontinued, but as of a couple of days ago, my Google home has no ability to work with the hub. I actually only have 3 Phillips bulbs; the rest are cree connected. The only other smart items in my house are the Google home, a smart things enabled tv, and some smart life plugs.

My preference is going to be minimizing the amount of time I have to put into setting everything back up; do any of you have recommendations on what the best solution would be, between the hue v2, wemo, wink, and smart things?

Can't seem to decide what to do

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 02:45 AM PDT

I'm moving out to my first own home and in my current room (which is my bedroom and home office) I have Hue lights & Chromecast devices.

However I'm unsure on what the best option / most used option is for home automation. Filling my whole house with Hue lights seems not right? Do people actually do it?

Also, if you commit to Hue and use other smart lightning as well you have different kind of apps and stuff and that makes it a nightmare to control. Can't see myself putting Hue remotes on the wall everywhere, next to the standard light switches.

I've read about openHAB and Hass.io but it seems that using Google Home you can achieve mostly the same things without having to setup a local server at home. But again, unsure on what the best thing is to start with... If Google drops support on this, you're screwed...

Would love to have a centralized interconnected system and I'm really into simplicity & minimalism. I know home automation requires a lot of effort and I'm willing to put it in..

    Lutron solar powered shades?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 12:31 PM PDT

I've been stocking up onCasetas for a new house. Currently 30 deep with another ~15 Caseta switches to go.

Originally I crossed off expensive motorized blinds. But there's going to be 3 windows roughly 30ft up. I'm willing to exclusively eat ramen for 6 months in order to buy luxury blinds.

    1) Does Lutron offer solar powered shades? If so what hub is required? If a different hub is required from the one I already have is that hub compatible with my Caseta smart switches?

    2) Obviously I want to keep the different hubs to a minimum, but if I have to go outside Lutron Casetas ecosystem, what's the recommended brand for solar blinds?

    Thanks!

Shelly prices differences between usa and eu store

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 11:37 AM PDT

I've just bough 1 shelly 1 and 1 shelly 2.5 plus shipping to usa from the eu store for 37$ total (10.17$+18.66$+8ish$ repectively) . While i've tried to do the same in the usa store and the prices just become insane $16.79+ $22.39 +$15ish from shipping ( around 54$ total). More than a question is to raise this issue and for you to become aware of the price difference because i almost went to itead instead. But i also wonder why the hell does the usa shop is more expensive in the usa lol
