washing machine sends notification when it has finished Posted: 27 Jun 2020 01:44 PM PDT In this video you can see how I made a dumb washing machine to send me notifications to my smartphone, when it has finished. I use a TP-Link HS110 smartplug and Microsoft Flow to monitor the power consumption. If the power consumption starts increasing, that means the washing machine has started. If it falls back to a certain level, this means it has finished. When finished, I will receive an e-mail from Microsot Flow and my phone uses the tasker app to react to this event, by sending a broadcast to my Google Home Mini. I don't have a raspberry pi with hassio, that's why I use Microsoft Flow to monitor the power consumption of the smart plug. Maybe some of you have a suggestion for a better/other solution. Do you guys know other great services like Microsoft Flow? Basically I need to make a http call to the tp-link api every few minutes to get the power consumption and then react to it. Samsung SmartThings hub and LifX Posted: 27 Jun 2020 11:46 PM PDT Hi there, I've read many post and stories about how smart hubs really have helped people in the sense of having a single thing that controls every device but I'm kinda curious would a hub really make much of a difference to my internet speed? I'm currently on a gigabit connection using a google nest router and point. I can't really say I've notice any drops in speed but I can't say when I have the entire house turned on I can definitely notice a bit of latency. Would a smartthings hub reduce that latency between devices? I currently have 14 Lifx bulbs and 4 google homes around the place. Have a few IP cameras that I'm installing in a few weeks but I'm not sure if they'll be compatible [link] [comments]
House Fire Home Automation Products Posted: 27 Jun 2020 07:13 AM PDT Life Door installs on your bedroom doors and closes it in the event of a fire. It also illuminates the room and sounds a secondary alarm. Cost is about $143/each if you buy a 3 pack. https://fireavert.com/product/fireavert-electric-stove-automatic-shut-off-shark-tank-special/ https://fireavert.com/product/fireavert-electric-stove-automatic-shut-off-shark-tank-special/ Fire Avert has both an electric stove automatic shut-off and a gas stove automatic shut-off. It syncs to the sound of the smoke alarm and will automatically shut off the gas or electric to your stove when you smok alarm sounds. Cost is about $150 for the electric shut-off and $170 for the gas shut-off. I have no affiliation or financial interest in either of these companies. Got any others? [link] [comments]

Shelly1 switch and plug wiring for Swiss old electric wiring Posted: 27 Jun 2020 06:22 AM PDT I recently bought a Shelly1 and want to use it behind my switch which also has a plug. I live in Switzerland and the cabling is old. I took some pictures and made a mockup drawing. I don't want to mess up neither my Shelly1 nor anything inside or outside the apartment. I am well aware of the dangers of electrocution. My question is which cable to put where? I have 1 live 1 earth 1 neutral and 1 cable for the lamp. In the switch I plugged in the following way: The live goes in the live in the switch. I connected 1 live from the switch to the plug so I have electricity in the plug too. The lamp wire is connected in the lamp socket. Neutral goes in 1 of the 2 neutral sockets. And the earth i plugged in as well. Question is how do I connect the Shelly1 so I can make the lamp switchable through wifi without making any problems to the Shelly1 or any of the wiring and also being able to use the plug under the switch without the this plug being "switchable" just staying active as a normal plug? Thanks a lot in advance for any help! If you have questions feel free to ask! [link] [comments]
Posted: 27 Jun 2020 08:45 PM PDT I'm looking for options for a smart thumb latch turner for mortise locks, such as Sesame from Candy House, Gimdow from Xiaomi, Sherlock and Keymitt. Even though I looked at these, none has all the features I require, which is starting to look like a holy grail. [link] [comments]
Posted: 27 Jun 2020 08:45 PM PDT Hello, I'm looking to make a on air light of sorts. I have been working from home due to Covid like many other people. The main problem I have is that people keep opening the door to talk to me while I'm working which isn't an issues, except for when I am on the phone. I was thinking I could buy a simple smart light bulb that will turn red when I'm on my phone. Is something like this possible? I have no smart products in my house right now, and would like to spend the least amount possible. My phone is a Pixel 3a, and I would like for it to turn on with multiple apps, Facebook messenger/whats app/phone app. Thank you for any advise. [link] [comments]

Ambi Climate 2 - does the AI actually get smarter after a while? Posted: 27 Jun 2020 03:19 PM PDT I've had mine for less than a week now so I'm probably just anxious to see it do a good job, but I feel like my ambi climate is making really dumb decisions to goad me into telling it I'm hot or cold instead of trying to find a plateau of good comfort. Note I'm in the southern hemisphere so it's winter. Also Celsius. The last couple of days it's been deciding to blast 30° in the morning and making a giant sawtooth graph when I wake up and tell it I'm too hot. It never decides to pick a more logical number and let the heat pump's internal thermostat find equilibrium. Then when I tell it I'm too hot it goes to 10°, instead of just down a couple of degrees. Does it get better? [link] [comments]
Is my LED strip too long now? The lights get dimmer and then don't work at all. Posted: 27 Jun 2020 03:03 PM PDT I bought a 16' set of LED strip lights and then cut them so that there is a strip on each shelf. In between the six sections I have six extension wires so that I can connect each shelf out the back and up to the next one. I assume that its too long now so is there an easy solution? Can I buy a stronger power adapter? Edit: I meant 16 feet, not meters. [link] [comments]

Caseta: Control 2 button switch with 3 button Pico Posted: 27 Jun 2020 02:46 PM PDT Is it possible to use this pico: https://www.amazon.com/Lutron-3-Button-Wireless-Lighting-PJ2-3BRL-WH-L01R/dp/B00KLAXFQ0/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=pico&qid=1593294305&sr=8-2 to control this switch? https://www.amazon.com/Lutron-Caseta-Wireless-Lighting-PD-5ANS-WH-R/dp/B07GYBC77S/ref=sr_1_6?dchild=1&keywords=2+button+caseta&qid=1593294332&sr=8-6 Obviously the dimming functionality won't work. Posted: 27 Jun 2020 12:14 PM PDT Hi Friends, I have a brand new SmartThings 2018 (v3) hub sitting in my drawer, unopened. Got it via one of the Samsung promotions. I have Smart Life, Tuya, Globe Suite compatible smart switches and plugs all over the house that I control with my Google Home set up. Question: Is there any way to use my SmartThings hub that is unused now with these Chinese devices? Or is my SmartThings hub practically useless? 😊 Appreciate y'all help! [link] [comments]
Posted: 27 Jun 2020 10:46 AM PDT As said in the title, I've got several IR devices who all respond to the same IR commands differently. Like my IR LED strip will turn on and change color when I try to change nebula speed with the IR remote for my Star projector. Presumably if I got an IR blaster, the same thing would happen when I program that command. What I want to do is convert my IR controlled Star projector to WiFi to control over something like OpenHAB. At the very minimum would like ideas on possibly hooking up a very small and low power internal WiFi controllable IR transmitter inside my Star projector and block it off from being externally controlled with the remote. This way I won't have to alter the device except to add power to the WiFi IR transmitter. Not looking for a multipurpose IR Blaster in this case. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Smart options for Sharp Aquos LC40_46_52_60LE830U TV Posted: 27 Jun 2020 09:36 AM PDT My wife is currently unhappy with the Logitech remote we are using with this TV. She has mentioned that she would like a smart option to control the TV. One example would be "Hey, Alexa, watch Netflix" or turn on the DVD player. My question is what is available for this sort of thing? It doesn't have to be Alexa, it can be HomeKit or google. Any suggestions are appreciated. [link] [comments]
Posted: 27 Jun 2020 09:18 AM PDT I've been collecting Echos, Dots, SmartBulbs, Smart Switches and Smart Plugs for the last few years. The house runs exclusively on Smart lighting at this point. Up until now, I've used exclusively TP-Link devices so I could avoid having to have a hub. Now, I've got 2 Samsung PowerBots and 3 Samsung Smart TVs that aren't integrating with Alexa as well as planned. For instance, triggering my Routine to trigger a clean my room scene with the PowerBots does nothing. The routine starts, the robot beeps, then sits there. The scene works flawlessly from the SmartThings app. The same holds true for some of the routines with the TVs. Work great through the SmartThings app and even through the Alexa app but voice control is rubbish. So I am breaking down and buying a SmartThings Hub. That's where my question comes in. To start I just want my existing devices to work through Alexa and I feel like the ST hub will help with that. Are there any additional items I need to add to make this go smoother? Current Inventory: - 3 Echos (mixed gens)

What kind of switch can I use for a fan/light combo with an external remote? Posted: 27 Jun 2020 07:00 AM PDT Hello, I have multiple fans in my house that I purchased from Costco. These fans have a light and a remote that is used to toggle the light on/off and control the fan on/off & toggle speeds 1,2 or 3. I am not sure what kind of Z-wave switch should I really get for this use case? I would like to just use the existing remote to turn on/off the whole unit but continue to use the remote for the individual controls. Any suggestions on this use case? GT [link] [comments]
How do you qualify what can be added to your system? Posted: 27 Jun 2020 09:58 AM PDT I'm curious if anyone has any sort of process or requirements check-list they go through when considering adding new products to their system. I feel like this would be useful to have so that I don't forget to verify some aspect, getting blinded by hype of something shiny and new but does not adhere to what I want for my system. I feel the main aspects I would want to verify against for anything being added to my system would be:
Each one of those areas would then have a number of specifics to qualify where on the scale of reasonable to unreasonable that element is. Looking for feedback on ways other people do this type of thing, questions they ask themselves, aspects they find important, etc. [link] [comments]
Best robotic vacuum for thicker carpet around £400? Posted: 27 Jun 2020 01:04 AM PDT As title says, looking at getting my first robot vacuum, half the house is hardwood so should be fine but the upstairs is almost entirely carpet, fairly high pile as well. Is there a vacuum that can handle it to a decent degree in my budget? [link] [comments] |
