How do you alert yourself at night? Posted: 07 Sep 2020 09:36 PM PDT If a door opens at 3am, what mechanism, audio or lights or other, do you use to wake yourself up to let you know? Some people I presume use a siren. Some will blink lights. Some will use a speaker to speak an alert. Do one of these work for you, or did you take another path? I don't mean just a deterrent for the person opening the door, but to let you know a little more casually than a blaring siren. [link] [comments]

Activate Switchbot on Hue dimmer switch press Posted: 07 Sep 2020 10:05 PM PDT Hi, I would like some help. I would like to activate a Switchbot on a Hue dimmer press. To be exact, the Switchbot is placed on an old switch than cannot be automated in a different way and I would like to be able to turn it on or off on a Hue dimmer switch press that is already controlling a Hue light placed in the room. Actually I have to press the Switch to have some light then going to press manually the second switch. Do you think this is possible and if yes, do you know how? (I do not find options to link these systems in the Switchbot or Hue apps). Thanks for your help. [link] [comments]

Connectivity Issues With Home Automation Equipment From Router on 2.4 GHz Band Posted: 07 Sep 2020 07:27 AM PDT Hi everyone, I have a question about connectivity of my devices. I have been having a lot of connectivity issues with my smart home items. I have my ISP's 2 in 1 router. It is a Hitron Coda 4582U (I'm with Rogers). It is dual band with MU-MIMO, beamforming, and AC1200. My download speed is 150 Mbps and I can get about 15-20 Mpbs upload. I checked all around the house for 2.4 band connectivity, and there doesnt seem to be any dead spots in the house where the equipment is. My house is about 3000 square feet and is a typical suburban home built about 20 years ago. The following is what is actively connected to the router on the 2.4 GHz band (I cant go to 5GHz in Canada for connecting smart home devices): 5x Yutron Smartlife Smart Plugs 2x Google Nest Mini 1x Google Nest Hub 1x Nest Doorbell (set to lowest setting) 1x Wyze Cam (set to lowest setting) 1x Chromecast 2x laptops 1x LG Smart Fridge All of the devices are wifi enabled, I dont have any Zigbee or Zwave devices. My problem is that my devices keep cutting out and/or randomly getting booted off the router, and I am having to constantly restart my router to get everything back online. Basically, I have intermittent connection issues. It only seems to happen on the 2.4 Ghz band (where all my home automation stuff is connected). Any wired connections (like my desktop) or 5 Ghz connections like my phone are fine. Why am I having these issues? Are my internet speeds high enough? Do I need to get a mesh wifi network? Will this make the random cutting out better? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Yale assure smart lock with Z-wave Posted: 07 Sep 2020 02:17 PM PDT So i have a ring doorbell and want to connect a smart lock to it, and have decided on Yale Assure lock (with keyhole) since the connected by august features make it Betty good. Yale also comes with Z-wave option. Now my question is can I get a yale assure lock connected by august and z-wave in the same time? Or such a combination doesn't exist? [link] [comments]
Controlling mains over Raspberry PI Posted: 07 Sep 2020 10:55 PM PDT Hi Everyone, Tried over at the rpi subreddit but didn't have much success so I was wondering whether anyone here had any ideas I am about to start a project controlling mains power through a pi zero but I would prefer using an out of box solution such as this product. https://www.digikey.com/products/en?mpart=2935&v=1528 Unfortunately, this product seems to be for US type outlet plugs. Can anyone see any potential issue with using a travel converter plug into the wall for power and then an additional converter on the board itself (male to female EU sockets). Don't mind sinking money in and buying quality components, the last thing I want to do is start a fire. The rough chain is remote computer -> LoRa -> pi zero w -> control mains power flow. Or Anyone come across comparable product with EU style plugs? [link] [comments]
Help with Shelly 1pm with no switch? Posted: 07 Sep 2020 02:53 PM PDT I'm attempting to wire up the shelly 1pm I got in place of the switch for the attic fan. I've tried few different configurations I've come across, but none seem to work, including the one in the instructions and a diagram on another sellers site. Maybe it's DOA? [link] [comments]
Homeatic IP or Bosch Smart Home, what you would recommend? Posted: 08 Sep 2020 12:39 AM PDT I try to make my heating smart and also control Smart the shutters. Bosch and Homeatic look for me almost identically. Bosch can control Hue, Homematic is open for 3rd Party Suppliers. I have checked the update frequency of their apps in the App Store where Bowch is doing this more often. But this was more desperation as I cannot decide which solution for my flat. Posted: 07 Sep 2020 05:57 PM PDT So, I recently purchased my 360 C50 vacuum (first robo vac!) off of a recommendation found on this sub and am having troubles connecting it to my phone. I have attempted to connect on both my phone (samsung) and my girlfriends phone (iphone). On my phone, I have trouble shooted by turning off my phones mobile data while connecting, confirming my wifi password, confirming my wifi is 2.4Ghz and not 5g, confirming my location service is on and running with the 360Robot app, and had my robot phone and router close together when trying to connect. I have tried reseting my router, phone, and vacuum to no avail. When connecting, it will get to 99% complete then fail. The vacuum will also say "failed to connect to cloud server." After checking out topics online, I was unable to come up with any other ideas. Any advice for a robo vac noob? [link] [comments]

Posted: 07 Sep 2020 06:52 AM PDT So my unit is fairly old (3 years) and had just come back from service at a certified repair center. I went through the troublesome exercise of re-pairing the unit to the Ecovacs app which took hours for me even with both my phone and the unit literally next to my router. Now it seems to want to take a stroll every couple of days at 3:09 PM on the dot. I have no scheduled runs set, and the unit has been reset by me twice since it's come back from Ecovacs. Their only advice has been pay for another service (close to 1/3 of the price of the unit). EDIT: Setting and deleting a run for each day of the week at the same time, as advised by ifixrobot, Ecovacs out-of-warranty service center, did NOT solve the problem. [link] [comments]
Which z wave hub is the best and easiest to use? I’m beginning to automate my home Posted: 07 Sep 2020 08:20 AM PDT
Posted: 07 Sep 2020 01:12 PM PDT Hey all, Been some time since I've done anything automation wise. I own/have: Google homes, minis, chromecast, nest cameras outdoors, google yale x lock. Philips hue (v1) hub, misc smart lights (zwave? And ?) Smartthings hub IFTTT app It's been about 4 years since I've done anything with it and they've been disconnected for sometime now due to other priorities and network changes. Curious, what's the latest and greatest? I find myself struggling to get all my lights to synch and work through Google assistant. Getting errors that it's not connected to philips hue or smart things (though it is!). What's the best go to hub right now? What's the standard config/protocol? Is zwave the standard? All I want to do is control my lights, cameras and locks with google assistant/google home. Considering a smart thermostat too, I hate getting out of bed to adjust it! Thanks in advance! Posted: 07 Sep 2020 06:35 PM PDT Hi all, I wonder if the experts on this group can help. My apartment is loaded with connected gadgets, from air filters to lights, to robot vacuum, smart lock, air-conditioner and more. Recently I upgraded my router to the Orbi AX6000 Wi-Fi 6 mesh routers, and that's where problems began. It seems like this router has no way to set a permanent 2.4g Wi-Fi network. Instead, it "intelligently" recognises which devices need that network and creates it without direct intervention. Some of my devices are fine with this and others just won't connect at all. Does anyone know a workaround? If not I guess I'll just have to keep my old router running as well. [link] [comments]
A smart ring to control your home using only your hands Posted: 07 Sep 2020 11:01 AM PDT So, I had this idea of a ring, with a gyroscope and a gps inside, that can control your home by only using gestures. For example you could point with your hand at a lifht bulb and rotate it a little bit, and it automatically turns on. Does something like this already exist? And I don't mean these wave rings, that are abviously full of electronics and look aweful on the hands. I mean a ring you could wear all the day, and you can use at home for controlling gadgets, a ring that just blends in. I already researched a bit and found out, that the technic could indeed fit inside a ring. So what do you think about this, and does this kind of smart wearable already exist? [link] [comments]
In-floor heating leaking! Please help! Posted: 07 Sep 2020 09:34 PM PDT In need of desperate help here please! Doing a home renovation in my new house, at the time it was built, it was one of the most energy efficient homes in Saskatchewan, Canada. It has in-floor heating and this is my problem. I pulled the baseboards out to paint my upstairs hallway, and whoever nailed the brads back into the baseboard had accidentally punctured a small hole into the tubing of the in-floor heating. We pulled it out and it immediately started leaking fluid. My dad and I can't figure out what the labelled valves mean, two tubes are labelled in sharpie. One says "A + F" and the other says "H" Any idea what these could possibly mean? [link] [comments]

Electric Kettle Temperature Switch Posted: 07 Sep 2020 12:44 PM PDT I was trying to figure out a way to connect a temperature gauge to the wall plug that my electric kettle plugs into. I've seen some set ups over the years in my interaction with beer brewers. I'm not looking for something simple. Not sure I wanna go digital/apps with this but I'm open to suggestions. Need help setting up a PC and PS4 with my TV and 2 Monitors (HDMI Splitter/Switch?) Posted: 07 Sep 2020 05:53 AM PDT Hi. My brothers are deciding to have a PC setup in our room. So they wanted it in a way that they can display the PC in their respective monitors or the TV as well as display our PS4 console in these output devices too. They want to make sure that they don't have to change the HDMI cables when one of them plan on using the available displays (since the cables would degrade if we keep swapping the currently connected cables). They also want to make sure that the devices are displaying at their highest quality (We have a PS4 Pro. It runs 4k on the tv just to note this). I did a bit of research online and currently, I'm limited to 2-1 Bi-Directional HDMI Switches where I can connect one to the console and it can output to different displays (I don't mind it displaying one at a time). However, since there are 3 display outputs, would connecting 3 HDMI switches to one another do the job? For example, If I hook up one switch input to the PS4, and its outputs are going to be at the TV directly and another switch. The other switch will then connect to two more switches, with each switch leading to a monitor as output. Would the other switches have any difficulty in displaying from the PS4? If so, are there any recommendations on how I can do a better setup? Currently, the setup I calculated (along with buying additional cables) is going to cost around 130 dollars. If there's a cheaper alternative, with result output displaying 4K, then that would be appreciated. [link] [comments]
More reliable smart bulbs and smart plugs? Posted: 07 Sep 2020 06:39 AM PDT Hi all, I live in an apartment that has pretty regular power flickers (often once a week). I also have a bunch of Teckin smart bulbs and two smart plugs, all of which use the Smart Life app. I have Smart Life connected to my two Google Home Minis. Now to the problem - whenever the power flickers, I have to delete my smart plugs in Smart Life, re-add them, and then reconnect the account to the Google Home App. This also happens sometimes with the bulbs, but usually I can use the "Hey Google, sync my devices" command to bring them back online. The two biggest annoyances are this constant dance of resetting all my devices, and also all the lights coming on by default when the power flickers back on (which often happens in the middle of the night). Can anyone suggest bulbs and plugs that don't have this issue. I've heard Phillips Hue has a setting to manage behaviour after an outage, but do they also solve the constant needing reconnecting problem? The plugs are also a big one for me, because fixing them is tedious, and I have to move large furniture to get at them. Thanks for any help, and sorry for the essay. [link] [comments]
