    Help With Three Way Switches

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 08:12 PM PDT

Looking for some help with smart lighting. I have lighting in my kitchen that is already wired with dumb switches in three places. I would like to add a switch in a fourth location. Any ideas how to make this happen with some sort of smart switch? Thinking maybe a Lutron Pro? Any and all help is appreciated!

Then, I reseat power cable, let it power cycle — and all is well again.

Has anyone else seen this issue? Help!

Trying to decide how to HomeKit

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 06:43 PM PDT

I've started adding automation to my home through HomeKit. Right now, I only have a few switches, but I'd like to make my own accessories. LED strips, water sensors, etc. are some devices I have in mind. I've flipped through the docs for the HomeKit spec, but I'm undecided on which approach I should take. It's probably helpful to say I'm a career software developer.

Should I try to make the Arduinos connect directly to HomeKit or just go through HomeBridge? I don't want to have to update code on all my home-made accessories every time HomeBridge updates or anything. Admittedly, I've never used HomeBridge so I could be off base on that. However, HomeBridge seems like the easiest way to do what I'm trying to do.

Any suggestions or experiences either way would be a great help!

Best robot vacuum for large house (5000 sq ft) with two pugs

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 06:09 PM PDT

Hi all, I'm moving into a 5100 sq ft house across two floors. We have two pugs and a 20-month-old infant, so I'm thinking we should get a robot vacuum (or two). Totally new to this type of product, so would love some recommendations. In particular, am I going to need one for each floor?

The new house has mostly hardwood floors. It was built in 1960 and the layout isn't confusing, exactly, but it's also not super straightforward.

In case it helps, we have a few Alexa-enabled devices, though I'm maybe thinking of switching to google.

Would obviously love not to break the bank, but will spend a little more for something reliable.

    TIA!

    Upgrade Savant or other option

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 01:23 PM PDT

Hi Folks I appreciate any sage advice- When we moved into our house some 10 yrs ago, we had wired speakers as well as a home theater set up with a screen, projector, some speakers and TV, all based on a Savant system. Really nothing too fancy compared to many other setups I see on the posts. And we really don't have any other smart devices or at least none that we need or use.

Our use is pretty simple- to listen to music and watch movies on occasion and we have been using the Savant iPhone app to "watch" or "listen". The challenge is every so often when we have some network issue (eg change WiFi expanders or change network name, all minor stuff that a non tech person can do) we are paralyzed and can't watch or listen to music until we call the original installers and have them remotely login and fix the issues— quite frustrating. Last time after about 2 to 3 hrs of messing with the connections(I think I only disconnected a sound cable), trying to figure out via web pages, I made our system work (and I think by upgrading our Apple TV). Recently, when we asked why is it we can't listen to music anymore after replacing an old airport express with Google WiFi unit, the installers said we need to upgrade the system for $1500 plus labor. Is there no easier/user friendly solution? I don't want to be emailing the dealer/installer on weekends (only time I can) every few months because our system is not working. Our alarm or lights or nothing else is integrated into this- just our Apple TV and cable box, projector, our old Yamaha receiver/tuner (which we never use for radio function- just music off of our iPhones); Is there something we can do/purchase ourselves that is easy to install and use?? Appreciate the suggestions,

Which smart switches for my smart lightbulbs?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 02:23 AM PDT

    Hey,

I own a lot of smart bulbs from different brands (Tuya, Yeelight). I am in the process of converting them all (or most of them) to ESPHome firmware. I am running Home Assistant server, and I also have Sonoff Zigbee Bridge (running Tasmota) connected to the Home Assistant.

The only problem is with my switches. I can control the lights via voice with my Google Home, but when there are visitors, I have a problem because they use the switches to turn off the lights (like normal human beings - duh!) and then I am not able to turn them on via automations / voice, until I flip the switch back on.

My switches also don't have neutral wire, only live wires.

I am searching for some switch that could either

    1. Keep the power to the lights all the time (might be against some electrical codes here in EU?)
    2. Be able to turn on the switch before turning on the lights when I say: "turn on the X light" (might be doable via home assistant automations?)
    3. any other idea that would work with my smart lightbulbs.

I would also like if the switch could:

    1. Dim the smart lightbulbs via holding the button or turning the knob or something (not that important)
    2. Have a LED that will show if that switch is on or off
    3. If it could have some small LED that glows in the dark so I can find the switch better

I have no experience with smart switches so I don't know what to look at.

Thanks a lot for answers and have a great day,

    Mavi

3 Way On/off Inovelli Switch Issue - Weird Behavior or Bad Luck?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 02:29 PM PDT

A little while back, I posted here about exploring 3-way On/Off switches and ended up purchasing 10 Red Series On/Off Switch (Z-Wave).

    Product Link: Inovelli Link

8 got installed as 3-way switches by licensed electricians.

7 of the 8 work perfectly... The dummy switch can instantly turn the lights on/off without tripping the relay in the Inovelli switch. Z-Wave works great in the Inovelli. 10/10 on these.

1 of the 8 is weird... The dummy switch must be in the ON position for the Inovelli switch to work.
The dummy switch turns the lights off immediately but there's a 1-ish second delay for the lights to turn back on. When the dummy is in the off position, nothing from the Inovelli switch works (toggle, z-wave, etc).

I only have one spare switch so I swapped it in the place of the 1 of the 8 which was giving me weird behavior and the spare switch gave me the same exact issue as the one it was replacing.

This house is newer construction and all of the switches are wired up in the recommended way: Inovelli Wiring Diagram

Did I have bad luck and got two bad switches in a row? Or is it possible that I have some kind of wiring mishap in my home?

    Hot tub Automation

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 03:02 AM PDT

We currently have a Bestway Hot Tub, its designed so you turn it on it runs for 72 hours and turns off.

The reality is it tends to be used a Friday/Saturday/Sunday evenings unless the daytime temperature gets above 18 degrees Celsius where it can be used Monday/Thursday/Saturday/Sunday daytime.

My problem is it takes ~24 to get up to temperature so it either has to be run continuously in the summer or we end up not being able to use it. The 72 hour timer means I keep missing when to turn it on.

The system seems to be run by the control pad and connects via a molex connector. I'm hesitant to fiddle incase I break something.

    Coffee Maker Automatic Starter

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 01:01 PM PDT

    Hi all,

Newly getting into the DIY home automation world, been playing around with the Arduino starter projects and decided to step it up! Thought the first fun place for me to start would be making an automatic coffee maker starter.

What I was looking to do was get the coffee maker to start from my phone using an Arduino. When I opened the coffee maker up it turns out that the mechanism to start it is just pushing a literal pushbutton switch.

My questions are: 1) What is the best way for me to replicate what the switch does, can I pull it out and connect the Arduino to start it using digitalWrite to HIGH? 2) Is there something I can buy or install to allow the Arduino to receive a signal from my phone to start it?

(Also any tips to not getting shocked are appreciated)

    Thanks for the help everyone!

New Smart Things: how do you automate home monitor?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 12:12 PM PDT

moving from classic to new app my workflows broke. my goal is to have single command that

1/ turns off all lights (easy)

    2/ locks the door (medium)

3/ arms home monitor to away

it was super easy in classic, now I figured out this works but is it the right way?

1/ I have a routine, lets c all it "numi' that
    — turns off all lights and
    — changes the LOCATION mode to "night (since there is no freaking way to change the monitor status to armed)
    — locks the the door smart lock

2/ I have an automation to set home monitor to away when location mode is "night"

while it works ok, the problem I have is that I can't use google assistant now to activate numi. for whatever reason, google doesn't "see" it. any advice on 1/ am I using smart things routine/automates as intended to get the outcome I need or did I over complicated it? and 2/ why can't I use google to activate numi?

Is there any better (and not too expensive) solution to black out shades than ikea’s?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 11:15 AM PDT

My husband just started graveyard shift, looking for something I can automate to close the shades in the bedroom when he gets home in the morning. Primary concern is ability to actually black out the light

I've seen various solutions ranging into the thousand dollar range, for the price is there anything else I may want to consider besides the ikea smart rollers?

Toasted a GE z-wave dimmer - any way to repair?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 03:37 AM PDT

Didn't realize there was an outlet on the circuit, and it wasn't happy when I plugged a saw into it.

Switch doesn't work at all - hub doesn't see it, no blue light, and doesn't turn on load. I took it apart but didn't see anywhere the magic smoke escaped.

Are these things repairable at all or easier just to pitch it?
