Posted: 05 Sep 2020 04:56 PM PDT After literally months researching video doorbells I'm no closer to deciding. Looks like the Ring Pro and Nest Aware are great tech but the subscription model kill it for me. Eufy 2K looks cool but the expensive base having to be run all the time seems cumbersome. Xiaomi have a 1080p video doorbell that is a one off price and includes a week's worth of recording in the cloud for free (I'm too boring to be worried about China spying on me). But, reliability looks like an issue. Our house is full of Sonos and echo speakers, so something that works within this ecosystem would be ideal. Our mobile phones are all iPhones. Would be cool if one of the video doorbells utilised current cloud storage (OneDrive, Dropbox, google drive, etc). Paying multiple subscriptions for cloud storage doesn't feel right. Seems as thought there's no clear one size fits all solution at this stage. Any ideas are appreciated. TLDR they all seem to be a part of 'walled gardens' to the detriment of usability and one off payment. Thanks :) EDIT: Since I'm after an ecosystem agnostic wireless device, at this stage the Xiaomi seems like the (unlikely) front runner. I have a Xiaomi robovac and other things and they've always been great. Hmm [link] [comments]
Is there anything on the market to control a patio umbrella by phone? Posted: 05 Sep 2020 04:27 AM PDT You know, when a tornado is coming through and you forgot to lower yours. It would allow you to do it from your underground bunker! [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Sep 2020 02:24 PM PDT Them to use in the future and expect them to connect to ST again as other bulbs burned out? Or should I delete them from my ST (but they're so hard to pair)? [link] [comments]
Done with Vivint, who should I look into? Posted: 05 Sep 2020 10:37 PM PDT My wife and I just finished our contract with Vivint and are looking to ditch them for something better, if it exists. We want home security with monitoring + automation, and we want something that does it all in a single platform. Right now we have the Vivint sky panel, three door locks, thermostat, glass break and motion, co and smoke alarms, and about 20 door and window sensors. I know the Vivint stuff talks over zwave and their hub is the controller, so I would ideally like something that supports the existing devices we have. SimpliSafe doesn't support Zwave devices like door locks and window sensors, atleast from what I can find. Ring leaves a lot to want. [link] [comments]

Posted: 05 Sep 2020 05:35 AM PDT But I cant figure it out. How do I get Google assistant to stop yelling her response in the middle of the night. Im usually up later than everyone else and when I ask her to turn off a light, or lock the front door, I always get a "OK LOCKING THE FRONT DOOR!!" So loud. Volume controls do nothing, and I can't find anything in settings... Any help would be appreciated. [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Sep 2020 09:47 AM PDT Hi all I'm wanting to add Shelly Dimmers to multiple ceiling lights so I don't have to (or can't) buy smart bulbs for them all. I've done a fair bit of reading on Shellys and how to wire them, but when I take down my ceiling fittings, all I have is a 3 core wire with Earth, Neutral and Live and I can't find instructions on how to wire the Shelly into this. Can anyone please help? Thanks Gordon [link] [comments]
How to control Hunter Fan SimpleConnnect with switch? Posted: 05 Sep 2020 10:24 AM PDT I have a "smart" Hunter Fan that connects to GA. Mobile app is meh, but works. I'm trying to find a way to control the fan & light with wall switches. Turning the wall switch off now kills the power, which renders the app useless. Has anyone found a way of controlling the fan with a smart hub? [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Sep 2020 12:39 PM PDT evening, I've noticed that Tesco are selling a series of products from Calex. has anyone had any experience of this brand? I was specifically looking at the smart power plugs. They also do light bulbs, switches, and sensors! [link] [comments]
IFTTT generic keypad to connect to a switchbot? Posted: 05 Sep 2020 10:28 AM PDT My new place has an old door buzzer lock system, operated by a little button in the apartment, but no intercom or remote connectivity. My plan is to use a switchbot as a remote way to buzz the door open, and use some kind of wifi connected battery powered keypad at the front door, with a code I give to delivery people They punch in the code, it sends an IFTTT intent, switchbot picks it up and then activates to hold down the door buzzer for like 5 seconds. The August keypad could work but I don't think there's an IFTTT intent for "someone punched in this specific code on the keypad" The alternative is to use a ring doorbell or something and verify people visually on my phone after getting an alert they rung the bell, but that seems like a lot of unnecessary manual steps. So, is there a WiFi connected keypad I can use with IFTTT? Thanks [link] [comments]

Lutron Fan and Light Switch - Single Pole Posted: 05 Sep 2020 08:13 PM PDT Currently using Lutron Caseta switches in the living room and master bedroom, and am really happy with the setup. Both rooms have smart switch for the lights, and another for the fan, so it works out just fine. I have 2 more smaller rooms that only have a single pole switch, and I'd like to setup something similar on the single pole switches. Not interested in having to run wire for another switch, but I'd like to be able to control the rooms with Alexa or even the Lutron Caseta app (preferred). I can't be the only one who's wanted to do this. Any recommendations? [link] [comments]
How to Make Dumb Touch Puck Lights Smart Posted: 05 Sep 2020 08:10 PM PDT I have a headboard with a bookcase built in that I love, and it has 4 led puck lights that plus into a standard 2-prong outlet. The lights have a touch-sensitive "button" that allows the lights to go from high-med-low-off. I'd love to somehow make it smart, but I'm running into issues. Tried a smart plug, but when the lights are turned off, they don't come back on without manually touching the dumb "button" that cycles through the lights. I'd like to be able to tell Alexa "turn the backlights to X percent, but smart bulbs aren't an option due to the unique puck lights. Any tips? [link] [comments]
What's the best way to monitor Power Usage? Whole home system? Individual Sockets? Posted: 05 Sep 2020 08:34 AM PDT Hey Everyone! So currently, I'm in an Alexa Ecosystem - I haven't went down the rabbit hole of Smart Hubs... Yet... Anyways, we're about to (Hopefully!) get a new house, and I want to expand my footprint to include power monitoring. Now, I've spent quite a bit of time looking at the "Whole Home" systems like Sense or Emporia - but it seems their device detection is mediocre at best. I guess I'm trying to achieve two things - one, monitor the overall power usage to detect trends, and two, identify devices that are eating up power on a regular basis. My thinking is - I have two options, or maybe a combination of both. Option 1 being getting a system such as Sense, or option 2, using Smart Outlets that can track power usage. What do y'all recommend? [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Sep 2020 11:01 AM PDT I'm looking for a device that I can plug into a Wemo or Hue Smart Plug that I can activate via IFTTT to make a loud noise to wake me up when I get an emergent text message. Would like something that will turn off after a few minutes as to not drive my neighbors crazy, especially if it goes off when I'm not home. [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Sep 2020 07:11 AM PDT Looking to make my dumb fans smart. Bond or Broadlink? The fans do not have RF or IR so any recommendation on that would help too. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Sep 2020 12:26 PM PDT I just bought and installed the "4-Port USB 3.0 Switch with Remote" (model 202060) by "Cable Matters". One main reason I selected it was because it had a remote. I assumed the remote was IR because it looked like other IR remotes I have for other switches and planned to add it to my RM Mini 3 by Broadlink so I could control it from my Raspberry Pi, but I realized after getting it that it seems to be RF, not IR. I tried recording the remote codes via my 433Mhz receiver, but it doesn't seem to detect it either. Does anyone know how to find out or look up what frequency it operates on or have any knowledge of automating how to switch it? I would like all the things my 4 computers hooked up to to be automated (HDMI switch, stereo connection, and finally my USB peripherals (keyboard & mouse)). The others are all automated. I was psyched when I found this USB switch for 4 computers and it seems to work pretty well. I'm just tripped up by this remote which I'd assumed was IR... Hopefully it doesn't use code jumping and that I have a way to transmit to it. I currently have IR, 433Mhz, and 27Mhz code transmission capabilities... [link] [comments]
Physical button to turn on/off all smart light switches Posted: 05 Sep 2020 01:52 AM PDT Hello, I've installed smart light switches (hooked with in-wall wires) throughout the house and have them set up successfully on Smart Life App. Turning on/off the lights all at once is easy on the phone with just a click of a button on Smart Life App, but I was wondering if there's a physical button + hub(gateway) that can do the same and also purchasable in the States (Amazon, Ebay, etc.) I already have Xiaomi Mijia Gateway along with a physical button as well as some various sensors, but unfortunately these won't link with Smart Life App. Basically, I'm trying to switch from Xiaomi environment to Smart Life since everything I have on Smart Life work with Google Home. Any advice would be appreciated! [link] [comments]
Using PC to control non smart TV and Projectors? Posted: 05 Sep 2020 06:25 AM PDT I few years ago I came across apps for iPhones that do this. They would send a generic infrared signals to TV. It was hit and miss but the iPhone could control the TV just like its remote. I wish to emulate my projectors remote button, standby on/off through my PC. So that with a hotkey I can get it to go into standby mode with my keyboard Are there any tools such as a USB dongle or software that I can buy that would allow for this? Thanks [link] [comments]

Has anyone experienced significant network issues after committing to many wifi smarthome devices? Posted: 05 Sep 2020 11:10 AM PDT Could just be coincidence, but my home network has really gone down the shitter since I introduced my 12 smart speakers, and 20ish smart light switches. Anyone else experience similar issues? More specifically, my issues are all related to packet loss, which is really only noticeable to me on network devices that are latency dependent (gaming PC). Anyone experience this? Any fixes or suggestions? [link] [comments] |
