Suggestions for TV power on/off scheduled 7 days a week

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 02:22 PM PDT

I need a TV or other solution that I need to turn on and off based on a 7 day schedule. Some TVs have a shut down option but not a turn on option. It's hard to find manuals that cover it on line.

Smart plugs don't seem to work since there needs to be a secondary press of a TV button. Suggestions?

    3-way smart switch wiring help.

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 08:52 PM PDT

    3-way smart switch wiring help.

I'm trying to replace 3 dumb switches with 3 smart switches and am stuck on the 3-way switch. All 3 switches are in 1 box with 5 bundles of wires running into the box.

Switch #1 is a 3-way switch that controls my living room light, the other switch without a number on the left is the other end of the 3-way circuit. I'm installing a Minoston Z-wave smart switch MS10Z however neither of the 2 example "regular" wiring diagrams line up with what I'm seeing in the box, so I can't figure out how to re-wire it(I have 2 other 3-way lights hooked up with this same smart switch already). The red wire coming from the top middle bundle to switch #1 is primarily what's throwing me off, and I think it's related to the fan. The light controlled by switch #1 is part of a ceiling fan and switch #2 controls turning the fan on/off. How do I wire in a smart switch for this?

Anyone know how I'd wire up my smart switch to replace switch #1?

Single Pole Smart Switch State vs Physical State

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 02:03 PM PDT

I'm looking at adding some Smart Switches to my house. In fact, I've already bought 5 Innovelli Red switches. If I turn a light on via the physical switch and then shut off via my phone, the paddle switch remains in the on position but the light is off. This doesn't really cause any confusion in a typical 3-way or 4-way configuration since the switches current state won't always match what the light is actually doing. However, in a typical bedroom setup with a single switch, does that cause any confusion or do people naturally adjust to potentially having to flip the switch down to turn on the light?

    Garage Door Solutions

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 02:50 PM PDT

I have a goControl Z-Wave Garage Door opener.

I was previously using wink, but stopped when they announced their new subscription service. I set up Home Assistant, but was surprised to find my device wasn't supported with that. Did a fair amount of tinkering but didn't really make any progress.

Do these work with Hubitat? I'm just not really sure how to proceed. I can buy a new hub or a new garage door opener/sensor? Looking for some insight.

Currently I am using Z-Wave for everything so my current Home Assistant set up is just a Pi and Z-Wave stick. I'm sure I can repurpose the Pi so I'm not really that locked in with it.

    IFTTT Pro?

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 09:36 PM PDT

Just got the email from IFTTT about Pro - can't wait to try it out. Is anyone using complex automations for home automation yet? I use IFTTT for some location-based automations and webhooks connected to Apple Shortcuts for integration with my Homekit setup, but I've been waiting for IFTTT to support more logic like Stringify used to offer.

PC speakers turn on when PC is on - why did I not think about that sooner?

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 02:16 AM PDT

PC speakers turn on when PC is on - why did I not think about that sooner?

I mean.. everything is in the title.

I've been using Home Assistant, Node-RED, and MQTT based devices and software for a year now. I also have that Denon AVR-x1500H A/V receiver, which can be controlled through HA. It has the capability to add a pair of speakers as a "second zone", that plays independently from the main setup (although only analog & internet sources, digital sources one zone 2 can be played on higher Denon models). And I also have this old Philips M390 audio system connected to my PC. I was thinking of buying some solutions like Logitech Harmony to be able to turn on my speakers when my PC is turned on, but the solution was MUCH simpler.

So I've gone and connected my Philips speakers to Denon's zone 2, added a binary sensor to ping my PC in HA and simple flow in Node-RED to turn on/turn off Denon's zone 2 when PC state changes.

I mean. Some things in home automation are so simple to implement, it's the idea that's hard, it's a whole new way of thinking about doing things.

    binary_sensor: - platform: ping host: 192.168.0.2 count: 1 scan_interval: 30

    Node-RED - main flow

Node-RED - PC sound ON/OFF uses media_player service from HA

Twitch / Philips Hue integration? Twitch Live = Hue Red, Twitch Offline = Hue White

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 10:52 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

I know using IFTTT I can set my lights to turn to a particular color when I'm live on twitch, which works great, but I want them to turn to a different color when I'm offline, which IFTTT cannot do.

    Use Case:

I go live on twitch, lamp in front of my door turns Red. Housemates are aware I'm live

I go offline on twitch, lamp in front of my door turns White. Housemates know I am not live.

Does anyone know of a way to do this? I'm sure there would be some API calls and whatnot but I'm not 100% over that stuff or where / how to host it.

Trouble with Alexa and my calendar

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 06:36 PM PDT

I just got an Echo yesterday and I'm new to these voice assistants. I linked up my Google calendar to Alexa and she's able to read it just fine. For example, I have a fridge being delivered tomorrow and I was finally given a time for delivery by the company and wanted to add the time to the existing appointment. So I asked Alexa to "Move Fridge Install to tomorrow at 2:30 in the afternoon." She just replies "Move Fridge Install to what day?" over and over and over again no matter how many different ways I ask. I can easily just change it in my phone, but I'd like to know what to do for the future.

    Thank you for any tips.

Alexa vs Google Assistant w/ iOS & Apple devices?

    Posted: 10 Sep 2020 12:01 AM PDT

    Hi,

We switched from Alexa to Google Assistant when the first Google Home devices were released. At the time, we used Android and Windows but we've slowly switched to using iOS for our primary devices (iPhone/iPad, adding Apple Watch soon). We use SmartThings, Hue, Harmony, Arlo, August, Ecobee, Sensibo, HomeKit, etc for smart home & automation.

I'm curious about how Alexa is at this point and how it works with iOS and Apple devices? Are there ways to make lists, notes or reminders from Alexa into iOS (using the iOS Reminders app, Apple Notes, or something similar)? Is Alexa any better than Google Assistant at this point with any Apple or iOS devices or services? Or am I looking at the same IFTTT integration with either?

I've been kind of disappointed over time with Google Assistant in terms of stagnating and even messing up basic requests that should or often are no trouble. I'm also kind of caught now between multiple ecosystems. We do still have YouTube Premium/YT Music, which I think is only available on Google devices at this point (other than the iPhone app).

If anyone could share any info on the differences that would really help. I can't even figure out the best place to post this between an Alexa, Google Assistant, or iOS subreddit. I hoped this sub would be more "voice assistant agnostic" and therefore could better answer my question since people may have experience with both. Thanks so much. Any help would be wonderful.

    Kichler Fan w/ Factory remote

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 04:11 PM PDT

    Hey,

I have been reading about fan controls being added to smart things... and I'm not 100% sure of what I should do. Welcome any suggestions.

I have a kichler fan to install that had a remote with no pull strings. I also have a room that has 2 switches for the fan (1 light and 1 fan). I really don't need the remote if I can do most controls via switch, app or voice.

Is it as simple as wire the fan with the remote and turn everything on. After that remove it and put in 2 switches that tie into smart things? Should I really remove the remote control unit?

Running My Home Automation Locally and Heres a step in that Direction !!!!

Am currently running my HomeKit Automation Locally. Did a HOOBS Installation videos using my NAS. This time, I am converting the same NAS into a Zigbee gateway. Heres the guide & the following video will be integrating Sonoff, Xiaomi & Aqara Zigbee using a plugin and have them integrate flawlessly to HomeKit.

Need recommendations for a battery operated Decora look-alike rocker. Would prefer Z Wave but Zigbee is good as well.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/homeautomation/comments/9jgss6/can_anyone_recommend_a_wallmounted_batterypowered/

My question is similar to the one above. I have a blank 1 gang area next to my Leviton Switch in my office. I want something that looks as similar to that as possible to control a Zooz Z Wave Applicance outlet. I know there are tons of options for mountable buttons, but I am hoping to find one that will slide neatly into the existing spot for a switch.

My last resort is to pickup a GE Enbrighten Portable but I'd really prefer a rocker style paddle if possible.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

I got some of these sockets from amazon - and I'm using a few of them.

Does anyone know if they have an API or anything that I can access? - given they work with alexa and ifttt I'd assume they have an API of some sort - or are those things just working through the e-family app on my phone?

Challenges Wiring the Inovelli Fan/Light Switch

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 05:11 AM PDT

I have this fan (the link is to a .pdf of the manual). The fan has three wire's coming out of it (from the manual: "The Black wire is hot power for the fan. The White wire is common for the fan and light kit. The Blue wire is hot power for light. The Green wire is the ground wire.")

I'm trying to wire it with the Inovelli Red Series Fan + Light Switch. A .pdf of the installation instructions for the switch is here. I've now installed four of the dimmers throughout my new house and am quite literally obsessed with this company. I don't have much experience with smart switches, but these are awesome.

Anyway, I can't get them to play nicely together. I've tried wiring it as follows, based on my reading of the manual:

Ceiling Black to Canopy Module Black

Ceiling White to Canopy Module White + Fan White

Canopy Module Red to Fan Black

Canopy Module Blue to Fan Blue

Fan Ground to the ceiling bracket (it's how it was wired when I first removed it)

However, there doesn't appear to be any power to either the fan itself or the canopy module (the canopy module won't pair with the switch, which tells me that the canopy module itself is not receiving power). I'm wondering if the fact that the ceiling fan's install instructions call for the Fan Black + Fan Blue to be connected to the Ceiling Black means there's something odd about my fan that might make it incompatible?

EDIT: Here's a link showing a wiring diagram both before and after integrating the canopy

    Automating old apartment intercom/buzzer

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 02:00 PM PDT

Okay so I know there's been quite a few posts on this, but I haven't been able to find anything for my specific setup. I have an old handheld intercom/buzzer in my apartment. This one is a single-button device, which I think is a bit trickier than the 3-button ones i've seen here since it works differently:

1- Guest pushes buzzer button at building entrance

2- Tenant picks up the intercom handheld to talk to guest.

3- Tenant pushes the single button on intercom handheld

I basically want to automate this in order to be able to receive notifications when someone buzzes my apartment while I'm away, and be able to open the door remotely. (ideally also communicating with the guest through my phone, but not necessary)

I did a test by attaching a wifi relay to the terminals of the single button on the handheld, however, when the relay closes the circuit, it only activates the intercom instead of unlocking the door. This is because the handheld MUST be picked up from the base in order for the button to open the door. So the tricky part is making the system think that the handheld has been picked up. From the wiring diagram I think that the system uses a magnetic core inductor to "know" when the handheld has been removed from the base.

The link below shows the wiring and diagram of my intercom system. If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.
