    Frustrated with my unreliable switches

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 06:55 AM PDT

I have been slowly adding smart switches to my house -

3 Leviton in wall lights switches4 iDevices switches (wall plug for lamps)2 iDevices outdoor switches

The problem is that every single one of them is unreliable. They'll work fine for several weeks, then one will just stop working... then another. The Leviton switches are the worst because sometimes they require me to cycle power of the wall switch from by breaker box (which Leviton support seems to think is reasonable).

Are all do it yourself smart switches unreliable, or did I just pick two unreliable brands?

    ** EDIT **

Thanks for all of the replies! I just purchased a Lutron Caseta starter set with a couple extra lamp plug ins from Amazon. I'll let you all know how it goes.

Need some help with a better (affordable) smart light setup

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 10:14 PM PDT

Hey guys, need some help with making my lighting set up more streamlined/user friendly.

Right now most of our lights our lights in the house are controlled via Google Home. But it gets really annoying telling Google to turn on the lights, especially because we dont have one in every single room in the house(the way our house is designed it would be stupid to put one in every room) and it has trouble hearing us over the AC or the heater. Also, sometimes is more convenient to just flip a switch,

Which leads me to my next point. I know I could easily buy smart switches for the lights, however I am renting and I'm moving in a year, so I dont feel like having to remove the switches and place the old ones back in and I dont like my landlord enough to gift them to him.(Not like I would get anything out of that anyway)

Some things I thought of would be to buy really cheap used phones. I've seen some for like $15. And use those as multiple switches, but at least to of the areas dont have outlets near by, so it would kind of suck to have to charge the phones every other day.

Ideally what I want, but I'm not sure if something like this exists. Is long before smart lights existed, I had this portable switch I could lay on my night stand so I could turn my lamp on and off remotely. Something like this: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Utilitech-White-Remote-Control-Outlet/1000233911?cm_mmc=shp-_-c-_-prd-_-elc-_-google-_-lia-_-204-_-timersandsurgeprotectors-_-1000233911-_-0&placeholder=null&&ds_a_cid=112741100&gclid=Cj0KCQjw5eX7BRDQARIsAMhYLP9Soxt7xHigEZtXzJVn1Od47o8MYBmM_hDPoVILZD7XolpzQ-OqwxgaAmPTEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

I know they sell smart plugs, but is there a device out there that is a simple wireless on and off switch for my lights that are not connected to outlets?

If not, does anybody else have any suggestions?

    Appreciate the help.

I need a replacement for Smartthings

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 09:00 PM PDT

The latest update to ST has removed the ability to specify which devices to allow Google home to have access to and now I have duplicates of every device and all voice commands give an error. What other drop in replacements are there?

Tool that could make process of terminating network cables easier and faster

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 11:37 AM PDT

    Hi Reddit,

I am aware that this is not the typical post for the r/homeautomation but I believe you'll find it interesting. Most of you, if not all, are familiar with the process of terminating/trimming network cables and it might be something that you do daily. There are multiple ways to do this, many different tools are being used for stripping, crimping, and punch-down part of the termination process. Arguably, it's hard to say what approach is the best. Untwisting, separating, and straightening (if necessary) twisted pair wire was the most time consuming and, to be completely honest, the most painful part of the process, at least for me, especially when I would have more than just a few RJ45's to crimp or keystone jacks to punch-down.

For the past year and a half, I have been designing a tool that could speed up the termination process in general, and save your fingers. When it comes to punching down keystone jacks and blocks, if you follow the best practices, the wires should be twisted up to the last second. Technicians usually use the "half a turn" method or "spudger" to separate the wire just enough so it can fit in the slots, but there are plenty of examples, circling on the web, where the wire is being untwisted almost all the way to the jacket. Tech guys use the methods that work best for them, the results are usually the same.
The tool I designed could be used in both instances.

Please check out the Untwist Tool demo video, and feel free to share your opinion. There are a few more videos on the same YouTube channel that are demoing different ways the tool can be used. Feel free to check them out too, it might give you a better input. Every feedback would be appreciated.

    Thank you!

Is there a definitive choice in smart plugs/power-strips?

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 06:25 PM PDT

Options vary wildly, prices vary wildly, big gaps in quality and reviews.

Is there a definitive winner for 2020? I ask this after extensive personal research and even trying a few plugs out and being disappointed. CNET style reviews aren't really giving me the information I need to make a choice.

    Things that matter to me.

    • Quality/ reliability
    • Cost vs. # of plugs
    • honest surge protection
    • a device that doesn't run super hot when inactive (looking at you INNR brand zigbee plugs)
    • compatibly with all major home automation platforms
    • in-house apps that don't suck
    • energy tracking would be nice

(I guess you could add security in there too if you're worried about it, although I think I'm going to make a separate network for my automation purposes)

HUE Bulbs in a Lutron Smart Home question

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 09:08 PM PDT

Has anybody used hue bulbs integrated into another well-established smart switch lineup?

I'm looking to add about eight exterior lights color changing pot lights and I wanted to know if having them run off my caseta Lutron system is going to screw up the hue bulbs.

specifically I'm wondering if they are programmed to different colors I turn them off with a cassetta switch if turning the cassetta switch back on is going to reset each time.

    Any help is appreciated!

    LED Philips Hue Question

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 08:46 PM PDT

Hello, I have Gotten a Philips Hue Extender From a friend for my birthday. He only gave me the extender. Well I without thinking ordered the Philips Hue starter pack for the LEDs. I got them today to find out the connectors don't match. I keep digging to find that they had made two different 6 pin connecters.

To get to the point. Is there someplace I could buy a power supply for the 6 pin standard and the controller OR an adapter to use the standard size 6 pin?

KwikSet SmartCode 916 not lockable with alexa anymore?

Had to update the Smartthings integration with Alexa the other day, and it seems we can no longer lock the door with Alexa ( like they removed locking on purpose, but unlock with code is still there) Really annoying. Anyone else notice or know why? I was just fully getting into the habit of making Alexa lock the door as i walked out

    LED Question

Looking to make some Halloween and Christmas LED string lights using individually addressable LEDs. Perused this video which seems great, but are there any in depth guides on how to put together a setup like this, specifically addressing how to make the setup (i.e. power supply, ESP8266, connections between LED strips, etc) weatherproof?

    RadioRa2 Setup - Any suggestions?

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 12:09 PM PDT

I've never done this before so I'm looking for feedback. This is a new construction project. 2500 sf with 1400 sf on the first floor. I don't have plans for HA upstairs--at least for now. I plan to take the course and will likely do the programming.

I'd like to hide 12 switches in a coset and use 2 keypads + switches as needed.

Here is my current list and I can add on as I live in the house:

    • 1x Connect Bridge
    • 1x Main Repeater
    • 2x RadioRA2 Wallbox Power Module. I will bury these in a closet to remove 12 switches from the great room.
    • 2x RadioRA2 C•L Hybrid Keypad (6 button). These will act as the main controls. One will be located near the front room and the other in the great room.
    • 5x Lutron RRD Dimmer Switches (or as many switches as needed)

Some questions I can't seem to answer:

To hide switches, is it better to use the Wallbox Power Module or individual switches?

Which model dimmer switches would I buy? There seem to be so many models. Most of the lights are Halo LED 6" can lights, new construction.

How would you expect an electrician to bid the install of the power modules, switches and keypads in comparison to regular switches? Would the bid be higher or lower for Lutron? It seems to be easier to run wires to one closet and a few additional wires to keypad locations as opposed to running wires to 12 wall switches. But again, I'm a newbie and may totally be missing something.

    Thanks for your help!

Cheap Chinese Products and your data.

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 05:29 PM PDT

It seems to me that cheaper smart devices send back information to Chinese companies and by extension China itself.

I'm all but sure American companies are no different.

Does anyone have the low down on this?

How prevalent is this data collection in the industry?

How can you protect yourself against it?

    Should I be worried?

I have some C by GE lights that aren't compatible with Flic or IFTTT, but I'd like to use the Flic buttons to toggle lights on and off if possible. Is it possible for IFTTT to trigger Google Home to turn lights off and on in a room? Like could IFTTT tell Google to turn the lights off/on somehow?

Using relays in 240 circuit with no neutral

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 09:53 AM PDT

    Hi all,

My water supply comes from a pump submerged in a lake, and I have an in-pipe heater wire that keeps the supply line from freezing. It runs at 240v on a two-phase circuit, and the old style mechanical relay went kablooey, so I'm wondering if there's a way to switch this power on/off using a 2 relay module I have.

The relays both say 10 250V AC on them, but I'm wondering how to insert them into the system - do I just use the same spot and put a single relay in, or does having 120V coming from the other direction mean I need to switch both supply lines? Does not having a neutral change how this would work? Is this whole idea just dangerous?

    Bathroom occupancy light

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 05:14 AM PDT

I'm gonna be moving in with some friends in a months time, but we've stumbled upon a little roadblock, which I'm hoping one of you could help me find a solution to:

My room is solely accessible through the bathroom, which I share with one of my friends. Because of that, there is no lock on either door. My first idea was to set up a button to push, to change lights on the outside of both doors to show it is occupied. This is a bit tedious, and is 100% going to be forgotten more than once. So my question is: do you have a good solution to automate this process?

Holiday Wled project solar + batteries

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 09:45 AM PDT

I'm looking to set up some string lights for a tree I have in m front lawn using Wled. The difficult part is I'm trying to do a solar + battery set up so wires aren't ran across my lawn.

Parts I've started to pick but open to changing. Either have this solar panel mounted on top of the enclosure or find a different one and put it on a stake. I also need a reputable brand to buy 18650 batteries. All ears to recommended batteries.

    Replace Vivint doorbell

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 08:03 AM PDT

I bought my first house and moved in last year, the old owners had a Vivint security system with the smart hub, and doorbell camera set up but they took the hub with them to their new house. This left us with just the doorbell camera and no access to it. The doorbell only rings outside and we have no way to access the camera.

My question is how difficult would it be to replace the old door bell with a new one that rings inside our home, also is there a doorbell camera you can buy that doesn't require a subscription of some sort to access the video?

Sorry for any formatting issues on this post.

what do to do with my mp3 collection?

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 03:34 PM PDT

Can anyone recommend a good, not technically complex, solution for how to play my old MP3 collection? They've been sitting on an old iMac forever and are not yet in the cloud.

We are mostly an Apple/Amazon Alexa house however I don't like iTunes/Apple Music. After getting an Apple TV I am starting to sour on Apple as a digital home player so I'm open to different solutions.

Ideally I want my songs in the cloud (so I can play something at the beach, at a friend's place, etc) and easily streamable to devices (the more the better, I'll buy a higher end speaker once I know it will work). If my iPhone can control all of this great, but I'd also like my iMac on my home office desk to be able to access and play songs too.

There is so much vendor-lock still and so little clear guidance on the web it is really hard to figure out what to do.

    Thermostat problem

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 06:42 AM PDT

The person who built my house was smart, they put in two thermostats, one upstairs to control cooling and one downstairs to control heating. The person who built my house was dumb, they ran three-wire cables to both thermostats. Is there any brand of smart thermostat that will let me control both things from both places without re-running the wires? I am fine with having to attach something to my furnace, if it makes things easier/cheaper.

Best z-wave 3 way dimmer with physical dimmer switch for disabled/senior citizen users?

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 08:40 AM PDT

My wife and I moved in with our in-laws to help them out with medical issues. My father-in-law is hemiplegic and has trouble with new technology. We are remodeling our kitchen and adding a new bedroom and I would like to add some Z-Wave switches in the process. We need a three-way dimmer switch that has an easy to use dimmer. A lot of them I look at looks like they are just capacitive and you touch the main button, but I'm looking for something that a senior person will easily be able to use. The Z-Wave switches are important because I'll be putting motion sensors up to turn on Hall lights to function as a night light for them and also for my kids.

What do you think would you recommend? Alternatively, I could go to Wi-Fi switches if necessary.

Edit: the switch will also need to with physically if the z-wave connection isn't working

    Two Leviton Z-Wave Dimmer Failures

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 02:35 PM PDT

I installed a Leviton Z-Wave Dimmer model R51-DZ6HD-1RZ I purchased at Home Depot. After about three weeks it failed and was stuck on and uncontrollable. I returned it for a replacement and now about three weeks later the replacement has failed the same way. Any ideas what could be causing the failures? The same box has two other Z-Wave switches, a ceiling fan controller, and a non-dimming light switch. Both of those are working fine with no issues.
