z-wave controller for CCT LED Strip

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 11:17 PM PDT

Hey guys, I've been looking for a few days now and I can not find a z-wave controller for a CCT LED strip.

I'm looking to install a couple of the FlexFire Tunable White Series LED Strip in my wife's new office for under cabinet lighting and shelf lighting. The rest of my lights and blinds are all z-wave so I was hoping to keep my configuration simple and just use a z-wave controller... problem is the only thing I've come across is a Chinese device from Sunricher (https://www.sunricher.com/zwave-dual-color-led-lighting-device-sr-zv9101fa-cct.html) that I can't find for sale anywhere.

Has anyone come across anything that will work? If not what are my options? I don't want to use an RBGW strip, really want to just go with a high CRI CCT.

Wireless doorbells with local video recording?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 08:35 PM PDT

I don't know if im asking for too much or would be better off going with a seperate camera/ doorbell but im trying to find a wireless doorbell that:

    • either records 24/7 or has decent motion detection activation
    • can view the live video feed from a phone
    • transmit audio or text. preferably with a pre-recorded option.
    • Either rechargeable battery or lasts a decent while on regular triple/double As
    • push notification, google assistant and/or ifTTT/ Tasker support.

Most reliable smart lock for unlocking remotely?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 11:12 PM PDT

I have the August 3rd Gen but lately it's been getting stuck and not locking or unlocking. I know this is likely an alignment issue but my problem is the app tells me that door is unlocked successfully when it isn't. Then we have a guest arrive saying they can't get inside.

I have tried reinstalling that lock many times and it works just fine about 90% of the time. The other times it doesn't and the history log shows that it does. Usually I can get around this problem after an angry text from a guest saying they are locked out and I just lock and unlock the dead bolt remotely over and over until it properly unlocks.

It also misses some of the open/closes/locked/unlocked events in the history section of the app.

Does anyone know of a reliable smart lock that I can count on to unlock remotely and have it actually be unlocked? And have app history event log be accurate too?

    Thanks!!

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 09:55 PM PDT

My backyard has 2 locks one is deadbolt lock and other is regular. I am looking at replacing it with smart lock but wondering if there is two lock solution? Meaning I want to be able to to just open one lock from outside but still having two locks for security or am I going to compromise my home security?

Switching floors with a Eufy G30 Robot Vacuum

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 03:09 AM PDT

    Hello!

I recently purchased the above mentioned vacuum and have so far been loving it. One small qualm is that my kitchen is elevated from the rest of the apartment, and its high enough that the robot cannot get into the kitchen. I was thinking about just moving the robot manually into the kitchen and having it auto clean like that, but I'm not sure what this does to the map and to the rest of the apartment once I move it back down. Has anybody done this?

    HomeKit - Gradually Sunrise/Sunset

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 08:11 PM PDT

    Hello,

I'm new here and I wanted to know if there was a way for the lights to "follow" the sunlight gradually. For exemple right now I have 3 automations :

    1. Lights dims at 50% at 19:00
    2. Half the lights close and the rest dim at 30% at 22:00
    3. Lights open suddently at 75% at 8:00AM

I was wondering if there was a smoother way to dim/augment the light in my room.

I'm using the TRADFRI bulbs (ikea) with the HomeKit.

    Zigbee water level sensor

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 02:08 PM PDT

I'm currently using an Ecolink Z-wave sensor connected to a float switch to monitor the water level in my back yard water feature.

I'd like to switch over to Zigbee instead, although there doesn't seem to be a Zigbee sensor with terminals available. I saw there is a Visonic one that can be soldered, but I'd rather not go that way.

Is there a zigbee float switch, or a good zigbee sensor that has connector terminals like the Ecolink Z-Wave?

Is there a simple way to know if a device is Zigbee 3.0 or another version?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 03:25 PM PDT

My house is mostly made up of Samsung Motion, Contact and Leak sensors and I was curious if they're Zigbee 3.0 or not?

I pretty much rely on my ST hub just for these sensors and I'm looking at the Tuya Zigbee 3.0 hub and wondering if I can ditch ST and use that hub with HomeBridge to connect to my sensors.

Sounds like they need to be Zigbee 3.0 but haven't had any luck confirming if they are 3.0 or not.

    Thanks

Curious about where I am going

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 03:17 PM PDT

    Hello,

I am coming up to a complete home remodel and starting to collect pieces for my smart home setup. Here is what I have:

3 google home minis 4 LIFX bulbs Nest Thermostat 2 Nest Protect

What I have purchased - not installed yet Google Hello doorbell 2 Google door lock (I forget the name) 2 Lutron Caseta fan controls 5 Lutron Caseta standard switch 10 Lutron Caseta Dimming switches 1 Lutron hub 2 Lutron motion detectors

Does this look like a reasonable list? I am considering a hub of some sort, maybe smart things? Not really sure on how to tie it all together.

Really looking mostly at some home and away control of lights, and some automation of bathroom and bedroom lights via the motion sensors. I have dove in way deeper than I expected so starting to get a bit lost. I think I am just looking for re-assurance that I am not way off track. And that I might find some success with the items I listed.

    Thanks for reading all this.

I need help deciding which direction to go with combining some existing systems with a yet to be purchased lighting and blind/shade system.

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 02:52 PM PDT

I would like to add controls for ~20 light switches and ~4 fan switches plus 3 blinds or shades. This is laid out over 3 stories (including basement) for a total of roughly 4500sqft.

Replacing all the switches in my house would total about 50 lights with about 10 switches for fans though a significant number of these could just be timers or motion detectors instead, assuming there is a cost savings.

What I currently have for "home automation":

    • Qolsys IQ2 with service from Alarm.com
    • Chamberlain MyQ garage doors (run through Alarm.com)
    • Schlage Deadbolt (also on alarm.com)
    • Alarm.com Thermostats
    • Sonos

I would like it all to be easily compatible with Google Home/Assistant because I have android devices and it's conveinent. I'm coming up on the end of my contract with alarm.com which I don't love because any time I want to ask it to do something I have to say "Ok Google, ask alarm.com to ..." and at least half the options are cut off for security.

I have looked at the Lutron Caseta and RA2 Select. I like the caseta because I don't have to buy parts through a vendor. I like Lutron's reputation for making solid products. That said, my goal would be that it's easy and convenient not just for me to use, but my wife and eventually our kids to use.

Any help would be greatly apprectaited!

What to know so far as expanding vs rebuilding an existing (Insteon) HA system?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 12:38 PM PDT

TL;DR: Just closed on a new home (Studio/1BR apartment) that is already set up with Insteon lighting (and switches?). Is there anything I should know about this ecosystem?

Long form: Basically the above. I am not new to HA, but I've always rented and mostly just had basic hue bulbs + google home (+ google cast) ecosystem. My new home already has Insteon lights basically everywhere and came with an Insteon hub(? model 2245-222). I don't really have specific questions, just wondering if there is anything important I should be aware of, or things that are worth replacing ASAP? I'm a professional Geek™, so long term my goal is to go all in building various routines and triggers and fun stuff like that so I want to make sure I don't paint myself into any weird corners.

If it matters, all the light switches in the apartment seem to be insteon, and at least a few of the outlets. I'm not super budget constrained, but I try to me mindful of my spending.

Also as an aside, I'll be reading through the "Getting started" and whatnot posts in this sub, but if anyone has any "so you just got an Insteon lighting system" type of articles or videos, I'd love to see them.

Any way to change Google Assistant wake words?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 03:49 PM PDT

I've been using Google Assistant for about 2 years now, but I still can't get past how much I hate the current wake word setup. "Hey Google" never picks up well for me, and "OK Google" just feels unnatural, speech-wise. I REALLY wish I could change the wake word to a name, but I've never really seen any news about changes to that system.

Anyone have a custom solution for this, or know if Google has addressed the issue?

    Eero Pro w/ Zigbee Integration

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 11:36 AM PDT

I'm struggling a bit with how best to network a new house, and looking at the Eero Pro line, it appears to be pretty slick with Zigbee integration. One less device to house, but at what cost?

    Anyone have some insight here?

Alexa will not discover Somfy device

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 11:34 AM PDT

I just got Somfy Mylink interface for my outside screen. The Somfy android app works to control the screen from my phone. My problem is to use it with Amazon Alexa. The Somfy Mylink Smart Home skill is enabled with Alexa, and the Alexa-Mylink accounts are successfully linked. BUT: when I ask Alexa to Discover new device, No new device is found. Same house network for devices; I have disabled/enabled skill, etc. . Alexa service could not help, and Sompfy only puts me on hold forever.

Any suggestions to have Alexa discoverSomfy interface most appreciated.

Need help with choosing security cameras with home automation in mind for the future

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 02:58 PM PDT

    Hello,

I am very new to the world of smart homes and home automation (also to security cameras). Something came up recently that forced me into finally finding and installing a security camera system. As I have been doing my camera research I have also tangentially been reading more about smart homes and automation and all the cool things that can be accomplished.

Long story, short... I would appreciate opinions on the following options:

    1. Reolink RLK8-800B4NVR, 4K POE four camera system + one wireless camera (for where I cannot get an ethernet cable to)

    Pros

    • Cost (~ $560). No reoccuring fees.

    Cons

    • Limited camera support due to NVR ( I don't have the PC hardware for something like Blue Iris)
    • Routing wires to cameras
    • Not as much automation support due to restricted NVR
    1. Blink Outdoor 5 camera kit system

    Pros

    • Easy installation
    • Built in Alexa integration for future automations

    Cons

    • Cost (~ $380 + $120/year for subscription)
    • I would most likely have to expand my wireless via repeaters or mesh network ($200 - $400)

I have a clean slate since I have no smart home devices. My initial impression is that the Blink cameras will be easy to integrate into future home automations, but does that justify the yearly subscription? While I do not currently have the hardware to run software like Blue Iris, my thought is with the yearly subscription savings after a few years I may be able to buy a PC to do so. I think the Reolink cameras would work with Blue Iris.
