Posted: 12 Dec 2020 10:01 PM PST Hello! New here and first time posting! I'm trying to get smart bulbs in my ceiling fans. they are GU-24. I couldn't find gu-24 smart bulbs (but maybe my google search skills failed me). we bought smart bulbs and an adaptor but that didn't work because the adaptor made the bulbs stick out too far so the bowl wouldn't screw back in. the ceiling fans also don't have a wall switch, just a remote that controls both the light and fan. (can the remote become smart anyway?) the goal is to be able to walk into my dark house through the garage door with hands full of baby/groceries and say "alexa turn on living room lights" any thoughts or recommendations on how to make it so? thank you!! What is the easiest/cheapest way to convert old thermostat to smart -UK Posted: 12 Dec 2020 05:15 AM PST Hi I have an old thermostat which I would like to integrate into my home assistant for automation. To control heating when I leave the apartments, when I'm on vacation etc Is there a unit I can buy that will be a straight swap out. I looked into the nest but it's expensive and requires messing around with combi boiler I have we the heat link. I'm looking for a cheap easy solution that will just swap out my current old Honeywell and reconnecting my wires to a similar smart device. [link] [comments]
Using built in garage door sensors Posted: 12 Dec 2020 07:18 PM PST I have a chamberlain garage opener which I already have setup in home assistant. I can open and close as well as see the state of it. The wall switch has a built in motion sensor that activates the light on the opener. The wall switch also has the ability to auto close after 1,5 or 10 minutes. Also the safely sensors will activate the light. I haven't found any way of integrating these extras but I'm interested if anyone has ideas on how I might accomplish bringing any of this into home assistant. [link] [comments]

Zigbee and Z-Wave still the way to go? Posted: 12 Dec 2020 04:21 PM PST It seems like it is getting harder and harder to find Zigbee or Z-Wave. Everything seems to be WiFi. I typed 'zigbee smart outlet' into Amazon and bought the third one that came up. Turns out they were WiFi only. I also had a hard time finding an outdoor plug. They all seemed to be WiFi. Ended up buying an expensive GE plug because I know it is zigbee. Is everything going WiFi? I don't want to have to install like 13 different apps to control light bulbs! I just want SmartThings. Broadlink RM mini 3 - ihc / Alexa integration with AC Posted: 12 Dec 2020 05:28 PM PST Hi everyone. I saw a couple of old (archieved) posts about problems in using Alexa to turn on/off the air conditioner, through a broadlink mini 3 controller: When Alexa turns on the A/C it's allways cold (eventough I set it to heat mode). I believe Broadlink is the newer app but I can't creates scenes in this app, so I used IHC. Taking the idea from those old posts, I created a scene to turn on the A/C (in IHC) and tell Alexa to turn on the A/C. This works well, but If I tell Alexa to turno off the A/C, "she" does not recognize the device or group. I tried creating another scene to turn off the device, but still Alexa does not recognize. Could anyone help to figure out how to create a scene to turn off a device? Maybe I'm making a mistake in naming the scene? Example, to turn on I named the scene "turn on air contitioner"; to turn off, "turn off the air conditioner". If I tell Alexa: "turn off the air conditioner", it does not work. Any help would be appreciated. [link] [comments]
Posted: 12 Dec 2020 07:38 PM PST I'm currently running lutron in the rooms. I have this long hallway that has over 15 3-ways switches that I want to replace. If I read it correctly, the Caseta pro allows me to control the lights without having to replace all of the light switches? [link] [comments]
Z-Wave or Zigbee virtual three-way switches without a hub Posted: 12 Dec 2020 01:25 PM PST I'm moving into an old house, and we are having the electrical completely redone. To save some time/money, our electrician suggested virtual three-way switches in some areas instead of running the travelers. Specifically, he mentioned Caseta. I have big plans for integrating Home Assistant into our new home, but not necessarily immediately. I'd like to find virtual three-way switches that have either Z-Wave or Zigbee control capabilities, and all that I can find seem to use these methods to achieve the three-way functionality. This makes sense, but it wouldn't be very helpful off-the-bat if a hub is needed. Do any exist that can function as virtual three-way switches without a hub to tell them to, or is that inherently not possible? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]
Controlling all lights from a single unit - looking for suggestions! Posted: 12 Dec 2020 02:42 PM PST Hi everyone! I'm building an office from scratch, and I'm currently setting up wiring for lights, plugs, etc. I want to make the lights smart, but I'm clueless about the switch(es). Most of the topics I found weren't helpful because each tackled a specific scenario, none of which was similar to my own. Right now, the plan is to have 3, maybe 4, different sources of light, each on its own switch (I think it's called a 3-gang switch. English is not my first language). Can I just buy a 3-gang smart switch and install it as I'd install the "dumb" one, or is there more to it? I found different products online like Yoswit or Livolo, which seem simple enough. I also saw Sonoff has a 4-gang switch which, if I'm reading this correctly, works well with existing, "dumb" switches? I'm under the impression I'm missing something key here, it can't be that simple, can it? All help is welcome! P.S. I'm intentionally leaving out links, not sure if I'm allowed to post. Problem with Inovelli LZW36 fan switch Posted: 12 Dec 2020 10:05 PM PST I just installed this switch and I'm having problems with the wireless connection between the wall switch and the remote unit by the fan. The connection doesn't seem reliable. Most of the time i push the on/off buttons and nothing happens at the fan or light. Only once in a while the command actually arrives and they turn on or off. The blue lights on the switch face go on and off every time as expected. The switch is only around 15 feet from the fan. Has anyone had similar problems? [link] [comments]
Globe smart bulb refuses to manual reset Posted: 12 Dec 2020 10:43 AM PST I have a globe smart bulb that has disconnected from our wifi network but the manual reset (turn on 10 sec, then on/off 3 times) isn't working at all. I cant find anything online addressing the problem past this. Any help is greatly appreciated. Edit: Someone switched the bulb on me. I spent an hour switching a normal light on and off. Leviton Decora switches all dying Posted: 12 Dec 2020 12:29 PM PST I have maybe 30 Decora switches. Literally my whole house is online. I have them all installed over the last two years and now one by one every single switch is dying. Leviton has been nice enough to replace the ones that have but it's getting very frustrating to have to call in and report a dead switch and then wait a week for a new one to come in. What system is everybody else using? Does Leviton have any other light systems that are automated? I have a few single pole switches in a few three way switches and even a four-way switch which is why I need a system that has some variety. I think the issue with the current system is that there is an individual Wi-Fi receiver in every single switch and I guess they just don't last and will eventually go off-line after about a year. Under cabinet lighting question Posted: 12 Dec 2020 07:04 PM PST I'm wondering if a cord exists to "skip an area" on a USBc LED strip used for under cabinet lighting. For example I don't want to light the area around my sink but there are cabinets on either side, thanks in advance! [link] [comments]
Occupancy switch for shared room? Posted: 12 Dec 2020 09:19 AM PST I thought this would be a sub where people might have ideas. I have two tenants whose only shared space is a laundry room. Both units have a door from their unit into the laundry room (that they lock from inside their unit). For various reasons, I need a system so that each tenant knows if the laundry room is already in use by the other tenant so they don't enter the laundry room if the other tenant is already there. Any ideas? [link] [comments]

Posted: 12 Dec 2020 05:45 AM PST I have a single gang double switch that I want to make the light that is controlled by the top switch to be controlled by a different smart switch. picture of switch: https://imgur.com/a/mRlmH5s
What options do I have for replacing this switch with something that I can link to the other switch. Any other way to solve this? [link] [comments]

Water sensor that activates a circuit when the sensor detects water Posted: 12 Dec 2020 05:01 AM PST Does anyone know of a water detector switch that when it detects water, it turns on the circuit rather than turn it off? We had a flood in our house due to our furnace in our attic. The stupid hvac company installed the furnace lower than the drain pipe so, since the water couldn't flow up hill, it backed up and flooded my house. I'm planning on putting some drain pan float switches in that, if it detects water, to shut off the furnace. But this doesn't completely help me. What I was thinking of doing was cutting the pvc pipe for the drain and diverting it into a bucket. Then if this sensor im inquiring detects water, engage a sump pump and pump it out of the house. So, this would be my first line of defense. If this fails, then the other switches would shut off the furnace when it fills the drain pan under the furnace. (I was thinking id put it in the drain pan too inside the furnace.) I've already tried to get the hvac company to help me. Since the flood, they've refused to send anyone out to look at it or help me. I did call a few lawyers and one told me it would be much cheaper for me to fix the issue and damage myself instead of paying him to sue the hvaf company. So, I guess I'm on my own. And, I guess it proves the only person I can trust that its done right is myself. [link] [comments]
How to put a Tuya 4 gang switch (zigbee and wireless) into AP mode? Posted: 12 Dec 2020 08:56 AM PST I cannot get it flashed in Ez mode, so thought I'd try it in AP mode. But its powered by a CR battery so I am not entirely sure how I am supposed to power cycle this to get it into AP mode an Tuya's website isn't helping at all. Its a Yagusmart, could be a chance it has thr wrong chip but I'm not backing down yet [link] [comments]
Smart lights programmed for every holiday Posted: 12 Dec 2020 01:01 PM PST Can anyone recommend a brand of smart lights that I can program by date? I'd like to have them be red/green for Christmas, red/white/blue for July 4th, orange for Halloween, etc etc. Program them once and then forget about it. Preferably these would have a native app that I could program them in, but still be compatible with Google Home. [link] [comments] |
