How I solved connecting Chamberlin MyQ Garage Door Opener to my Genie 1055b Garage Door Opener

    Posted: 11 Mar 2021 01:48 PM PST

    Trying to keep this short.

I couldn't connect the MyQ garage door opener I bought from Amazon model: MYQ-G0401-ES (the white one) to my Genie 1055b. Spent 2 hours and scoured the net but couldn't find the answer. Turns out after talking to Chamberlin support my Genie 1055b was a 2020 model and required MyQ model MYQ-G0301-E (the black one) with 11/20 manufacturer date and newer. I asked support why the newer motor seemingly requires an older model of MyQ (i.e. MYQ-G03...): "We had the 3, then the 4 and then updated the 3 again". I just got my MyQ model MYQ-G0301-E and it connected to the motor on my first try. Hope this helps someone.

Link to MYQ-G0301-E that worked for me: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Chamberlain-myQ-Smart-Garage-Hub-by-Chamberlain-MYQ-G0301/301951586

My Ecobee thermostat isn't compatible with the previous wiring which uses W, R, and G. Manual says I need C as well. Is it as simple as cutting power to the furnace then connecting the unused blue wire in the pics to C on both ends?

Looking to get in the Smart Home industry

    Posted: 11 Mar 2021 05:07 PM PST

Hello!! Lately I have been very interested on the concept of creating a Smart Home Solution business. I've drafted up a business plan and have been doing research on partner platforms as well as open source platforms to work with.

I'd like to provide services such as: consultation, integration, installation and membership.

Consultation: we will look around your home and hear your story and tell you how our solution can be integrated into your home and lifestyle

Integration: we will turn the smart home devices into a communicating ecosystem, that will be able to be incorporated into one's lifestyle with creating routines/automations (ex: when person X leaves home – close garage, lock doors, and turn lights off) and insights (ex: Air Quality, Energy Usage, Machine Maintenance, Home Monitoring), control (ex. Turn off water sub pump, turn on/off light switches), analytics (ex. Past 30-day chart Avg of bedroom Air Temperature),

Installation: we will provide smart device installation around your home from our skilled contractors

Memberships area are subscription base and optional. Every paying client gets traditional support, but you have the ability to pursue a membership for discounts, priority support, etc.

I'd like to have a platform that provides deep insight value and is privacy focused.

What are your guys' thoughts on platforms for B2B/B2C . I would be targeting custom home builders, AirBnB Home Owners, Property Owners, RE companies, etc.

I am looking at utilizing Savant, SmartThings, Control4 and Home Assistant. I just came across Nymea today and it sparked my interest and made me wonder what platform would be the best for streamlining the entire process from start to finish with the least amount of hassles?

Also, let's say you just bought a new house and you are wanting to have smart technology installed by professionals. How much would you be looking to spend budget wise excluding new appliances? And how much with new appliances?

I am looking for feedback- that this could become a viable and successful business. I appreciate any and all opinions. Thank you!

Robot Vacuum up to £350 (preferred: shipping to EU country included) from Amazon UK

    Posted: 11 Mar 2021 04:42 AM PST

I have £350 in Amazon UK vouchers, so I thought I'd spend them on something I needed. I decided on a Robo Vacuum, but now I'm lost among all the models.

For example the table Products Comparison on this website https://uk.eufylife.com/products/t2251 shows almost no differences between the models... Then why produce so many models?!

    Please help.

    Simple+reliable automatic gate opener

    Posted: 11 Mar 2021 11:13 AM PST

I want to put together a very simple system that would do the following:

When I pull my car up to the gate (which is remote controllable via radio remote) - I want the gate to open.

    Sounds simple, right?

Let's see what I have: The car has an android head unit, so in theory can run Tasker.

The gate can be opened via HomeAssistant action (no idea how to trigger one, and don't really want to, because it's < 100% reliable, but will resort to it in a pinch).

I can attach some sort of battery-powered tag to the gate, but can't pull the power from the gate. So that's kind of have to be passive. And bluetooth tags need to be charged (I think?). So probably not that.

I *sort of* can tell I am near the gate if the headunit in my car gets wifi signal from my house. But this works only in one direction - when I am coming home. When I drive out of my parking and up to the gate the wifi is on and stays on. And the timing is super tricky with this, it seems.

The gate is an ancient dumb type - which means it has only a command to open, and will auto-close on timeout. So if I pull it open too early, it may close before I reach it. Which sucks. Retransmitting the "open" code somehow does not keep it open (no idea why) until it fully closes.

So, ideally, this would be some gadget I can just power on with USB current, that would detect the proximity to the gate, and broadcast it's RF code. Can anyone help me put together the necessary tech to pull this off?

Sidenote: No, there's no real security that the gate actually provides. So I don't really care who can open it etc etc. I just care that it's in my way. Every morning. And every evening.

    Advice for starting out now

    Posted: 11 Mar 2021 11:52 AM PST

I have Nest Audios throughout my house, bought for the audio + assistant (internet searches, etc...) functionality. I picked up some Kasa plugs for cheap to use with a few floor lamps that we have with no wall switch and I'm liking being able to toggle them on my phone/with voice/on a schedule.

I posted on a smaller subreddit and many people recommended using Home Assistant. I set that up on my Raspberry Pi 4 and I'm liking the "power user" functionality that it provides. Being able to set the schedule based on sunset rather than needing to adjust it throughout the year is great, for example. My problem is that every couple days I'm needing to restart the Kasa service on Home Assistant as it will lose one of the plugs. From what I've read the integration of Kasa with third-party systems is hit or miss.

So I want to look for some advice. My goals are:

    • Immediate need is some smart plugs/smart bulbs, as well as a couple outdoor smart plugs
    • Scheduling capability (on at x time, off at x time every day would be fine, but I like the sunset functionality)
    • Works with Google Assistant/Google Home
    • Everything in one app that both my wife and I can keep on our phones

Home Assistant checks all the boxes, but I don't know if the instability is with HA itself or with the Kasa integration. I doubt I will keep the Kasa plugs just because of the "lock-in" to Kasa.

So any suggestions on where to go since I'm starting fresh? I'm in the US if that matters. Either sticking with Home Assistant and using different hardware (go all in on Zigbee? Z-wave? Combination?)? Or going with a different setup like Hubitat?

    Thanks for any recommendations!

Need some advice related to smart fan switch(es)

    Posted: 11 Mar 2021 06:12 PM PST

I am looking for 2 things:

    1. Recommendation for a smart fan switch to operate a fan. Looking for single gang, no bridge required, works with Google Home and/or Alexa, variable speed control. Context - I have 2 fans with on/off switch at wall in a multi gang set up with separate switch for light so this fan switch needs to worry only with the fan.
    2. Recommendation/advice for a smart fan switch setup where a fan/light combination is powered on/off for a single light switch and both fan and light are controlled via pull chains. Would like to control the switch with Google Home and/or Alexa. I'm wondering about set up with a switch to operate the fan and have variable speed and then smart bulbs to replace current bulbs. That way can do on/off for everything from the switch and control the fan speed from the switch as well. And then control the bulbs separately with their smartness (obviously, power would need to be on which means fan is also on, would be nice to have a zero fan speed setting on the fan switch). Not sure if this is possible.

    ...and go.

How can I change my Tradfri lights color WITHOUT turning them on?

    Posted: 11 Mar 2021 11:25 PM PST

    hi

I want my lights to change colors when the sun sets. I tried using google assistant routines, but it woke me up this morning by turning on the light when the sun rose. Is there a way to change the color without turning it on?

also, I sometimes turn a light off by using a normal wall switch. Is there a way to have it use the right color when it's turned on?

    thanks

After years of mulling around back and forth, I finally got Philips Hue lights

    Posted: 11 Mar 2021 10:52 PM PST

I got them for my bedroom but I am so impressed with their features I think I'll outfit my whole house with them. I love the Google Home compatibility. It's my first "smart" appliance if you don't count a wifi camera my friend gave me. I also bought some WiZ lights but was sad to see they aren't compatible.

Phillips Wiz - not following schedule

    Posted: 11 Mar 2021 02:36 PM PST

So I've just setup my new Phillips Wiz light for my bedside table. I've set up a schedule so the light gradually goes from warm to a bedtime colour and then decreasing brightness as the night goes on. It's currently 2230 and the light isn't the colour or brightness that it should be. Do I have to do something to make it follow the schedule I've set?

Flashed Tuya bulbs trying to using python to control individual bulbs with RGB

    Hello-

I have a nonprofit workforce education program (https://www.stacksandjoules.org) and one of the core curriculum projects involves the students using python to control 3 remote RGB light bulbs. We had used an older wifi bulb (Bell LEDS) but their product line seems close to EOL. So I decided to change to Tuya bulbs as another option for better long-term support. I've flashed the Tuya bulbs to Tasmota.

But now I am kind of lost; I want to have a python lib that would allow students to set_color on discreet light bulbs using RGB values. Is this possible with Tasmota? Any and all help is very much appreciated!

Everything I have seen up to now has been for headless systems or for group control (all bulbs at once).

    thank you

Smart lock that doesn't require an account?

    Posted: 11 Mar 2021 08:22 PM PST

I'm using Home Assistant for my hub and I'm eyeing the August 4th gen smart lock. I know they removed Zwave which sucks so I'm curious if the device phones home for auth or ever has data leave the network. Basically I've been trying to keep all my devices purely on my network and not have any data go out. Any suggestions for a smart lock that functions like this is welcome.

LCD chandelier won't dim fully to off (using Lutron dimmer)

    Posted: 11 Mar 2021 02:00 AM PST

Load Bypass/LCDs won't dim to off

I have recently upgraded my kitchen chandelier to have a Lutron Caseta dimmer.

It works as expected, except that the light will not turn completely "off". I haven't noticed any other flickering or other side effects, just the inability to dim to zero.

The total load in the chandelier is quite low since the lights are all LED (5 x 5w).

When I had this problem before, I did some reading that suggested that "smart" devices sometimes have issues with low impedance loads, and replacing one of the bulbs with an incandescent fixed the problem. Long term though that seems like a pain, though: changing the incandescent many times more frequently than the LEDs, matching the color temperatures, etc

I also did reading on "load resistors" and also noticed that Shelly sells a "load bypass", which comes with very limited documentation. Shelly tech support wasn't a whole much better, they described the bypass as a "not so simple device using MOSFET technology."

Anyone experienced these types of "low-load" issues? Is the Bypass unique to Shelly products or is this something we can procure elsewhere?

Is there a standard name for this device (if it exists?)

    Thanks.

That being stated, when I attempt to login to meross through the Google Home app it tells me "No Such User". Is there something I'm missing? Is there a work around?

Need some advice on building a multiroom audio setup.

    Posted: 11 Mar 2021 07:11 PM PST

    Hey everyone.

I've been doing a lot of research on getting myself setup with a multiroom audio setup. I mainly want to put ceiling speakers into my garage, office, front and back porch. My idea was getting the ceiling speakers in each location wired to their own DAC in the attic, and then use Chromecast Audio on each of the DACs to case the music to them. Unfortunately, Chromecast Audios are in short supply since being discontinued, and are going for WAY MORE than I want to pay (between $75 to $100 each).

I currently have a network of sorts going in the house as it is. I have an original Google Home in my office, Nest Hub in the Kitchen, Lenovo Smart Clock in the bedroom, and a Vizio Smartcast Soundbar in the living room. I'd like to keep it going with the use of Chromecast to play the audio in multiple locations in the house.

So I guess my question is, what is everyone doing to get that Chromecast functionality to different zones? Are there any DACs that have WiFi and Chromecast capabilities? I've been thinking about checking out Raspberry Pi, but I've never even used them before. I'd thought about getting Raspberry Pis and turning them into Google Assistants, then using that wired into a DAC. Thoughts?
