What is your favorite non-electronic automation?

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 03:11 PM PST

Two examples of what I mean: First : My wife has chickens, so she set-up gravity feeders and waterers to tend to them. Second: I got tired of having to constantly refill the dish soap container mounted on my kitchen sink, so I addressed the issue by replacing the small soap bottle with a line that goes straight into a gallon-sized dish soap container. Now instead of having to refill it once a week, I just swap it out once a year. What sort of mechanical automations – or optimizations – have you put in place?

Looking for a smart lock that fits this type of door. The issue is that from lock to door opening there's only 1cm and the door opens from the inside out.

Multi room audio- zone2 on avr vs seperate device like chromecast audio. which is easier

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 05:15 PM PST

I am wanting to add some speakers to the kitchen so I don't need to blast the living room speakers to hear them. I was thinking about either just hooking them up to zone 2 on the avr, or just getting a seperate device. I want to be able to easily select the speakers via spotify or the HA app. I don't know if that's easy with a denon reciever through HA/ spotify though.

    thanks

Looking for device to use humidity based Alexa Routine

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 07:49 PM PST

I have an indoor greenhouse that I would like to be able to better control the humidity of, instead of relying on me monitoring it and turning on/off the humidifier myself. Essentially all I need to complete this setup is a humidity monitor that can communicate with Alexa. So when humidity drops below X turn on switch, When humidity goes above X turn off. Any suggestions?

Anyone with a recirculating HRV wall controller, a multimeter, and is willing to do some testing?

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 07:15 PM PST

I'm on a mission to integrate my heat recovery ventilator in to home assistant.

There are three modes, the first two - low and high speed - are easy to get working. The third, recirculate, is showing to be challenging.

For the Venmar (and possibly Vanee and Broan, maybe others), the simplest control with recirculate is Simple Touch and it uses three wires.

    https://www.venmar.ca/221-accessories-simple-touch-constructo-wall-control.html

B and G, just shorted runs High Speed, shorted with a resistor runs Low Speed.

Y, appears to just be a power line to run the control itself.

I've connected B & G with a potentiometer and scrolled the power levels between Off thur High but nothing triggered recirculate. I'm at an impasse now without the actual hardware to test.

Anyone able to give me some values as to what the control is doing? Just need to know what's happening on the wires to try and replicate it.

    Thanks.

Which Wifi device supports the most devices?

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 01:47 PM PST

I am currently only using my Comcast Xfinity provided router/modem combo and I have around 70+ devices in 2 bedroom apartment.... I am CONSTANTLY having some of them unresponsive and I believe it's because I've hit the limit of my router/modem combo.

Whether its a single device or some mesh network... I don't know what I need.... can someone point me in the direction of what I can buy to get rid of this problem. I would like to get even more devices on my network but am very hesitant because I know I'm already at my limit.

Whenever I'm doing research on wifi devices it seems this bit of "how many devices can this wifi support" is ALWAYS omitted.... I have probably 30-40 2.4 ghz wifi connecting devices and many more 5ghz devices.... what can I buy to make sure EVERYTHING is always connected with a solid signal.

Would buying something like the 2 pack Amplifi Alien solve this?

    Patio garden moisture monitoring recommendations

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 12:34 PM PST

I am looking to get it so my garden is monitored for moisture and I was hoping to get some advice/recommendations from people who have done it before.

I have a number of different planters but they all seem to dry up around the same time so I was thinking 1 moisture sensor and to automate my hose to water the garden for a fixed time.

Meross garage door opener reversed door status

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 07:06 PM PST

The app shows closed when the door is opened and vice versa. I've already rotated the movable magnet 180 degrees, reversed the magnet sensor wires, and reversed the terminal wires. Those have made no difference. Here is a picture of the setup. As soon as the magnets come close to each other in any direction (front, back, or top) the app shows open. Any help is appreciated.

How can I integrate old GE Security (60-670) door sensors into a new smart hub

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 01:01 PM PST

I recently bought a house that has old (2007) door and window sensors at each of the windows and doors. There is no central alarm security base station in the house.

The sensors are GE Security (60-670) wireless sensors. I am wondering if I should throw these away and start fresh or if I can bring them back to life with a new hub, like a Raspberry PI Home Assistant solution.

It is difficult to tell what wireless protocol they use. Maybe z-wave?

Alexa Routine to Toggle/Enable Another Alexa Routine

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 09:53 AM PST

Has anyone discovered a way to create an Alexa Routine that enables or disables another Alexa Routine? I would like increase the logic capacity of my Alexa Routines.

    Example: Simple security alarm system

    1. Routine A - When Device leaves Home, enable Routine C + Routine D
    2. Routine B - When Device returns Home, disable Routine C + Routine D
    3. Routine C - When motion is detected at "Motion Detector 1," call phone + drop notification "Motion is detected at Motion Detector 1"
    4. Routine D - When motion is detected at "Motion Detector 2," call phone + drop notification "Motion is detected at Motion Detector 2"

It's almost as if I need a relay switch for my Alexa Routines to take logic processing to the next level.

How to setup MariaDB for Home Assistant and Nextcloud

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 01:06 PM PST

    Hey everyone.

I'm running a Debian 10 server with dockerised home assistant. My next plan is to add nextcloud docker container which I want to run with MariaDB. There is a MariaDB addon in home assistant however I don't know if I will be able to access it from my nextcloud container.

So my question is: How do I set up MariaDB so that I can use it with both home assistant and nextcloud?

    Indoor cameras

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 03:24 PM PST

I am seeking some options, my mom has dementia and has been roaming now. My dad is the primary caretaker but sometimes he needs to step outside or around the home, etc.

As a family we agree some indoor cameras and some motion alarms are probably needed now unfortunately.

I was going to go with ring stick up cameras and ring motion. I was wondering if this is the best route?

Wanted to get some ideas from some experts on what they think might be some better options.

Here are some things I'd like: Two way audio, long battery life and rechargeable, decent indoor nightvision.

    Thank you!

EDIT: Awesome never heard of Wyze, watched a couple reviews the V3 looks great for the price. I am going to try these out. Thanks for the suggestions!

I want to replace it with a smart one that support HomeKit. Please advice on some good one, that will not loose connection and be stable. Thanks!

Your experience with HomeKit? I’m considering getting some HomePod Minis

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 10:22 AM PST

Just want to hear from others what their experience has been with HomeKit via HomePods? Mine on my iPhone has been kind of crappy, but it might just be an iPhone HomeKit thing or it might be the bulbs I'm using.

I'm at my wits end with my Nest Minis, they've become complete useless lately (read here: https://www.reddit.com/r/googlehome/comments/m3h1gm/nest_minis_have_been_getting_super_finicky_and/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)

And I am not a fan of Alexa, which naturally leaves HomePods.

    Thanks for any insight.

Controlling RF blinds with Broadlink RM Pro

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 07:45 AM PST

I just setup the Broadlink Pro so I haven't figured out all the options, but I have motorized blinds, and I can only find options for curtains. I am able to link to open, pause, and close the blinds. I don't have any options in the curtains to select up or down to let in more or less light. Is there another device that matches what I need better than Curtains, or do I need to make a customized device with more buttons, or can I add more buttons to curtain?

As a fitting decoration to my comic book collection, I designed this PCB inspired by Spider-Man, which displays comics release lists of this week, next week, and the previous week. It also plays the Spider-Man theme song with a buzzer :)

Smartening up an "dumb" audio system. Audio to IR trigger, does it exist?

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 04:47 AM PST

I have a lovely old Technics mini system (SD-HD501s) from the 90s. Still works great, and sounds fantastic for its size, heck it even has BiAmped speakers.

I am running an HDMI extractor from a chromecast 2 to cast audio to it and that works great, but I wish it had the auto-wake function like my Google Hubs and Minis have.

I figured somewhere out there someone has to make a device to detect audio and trigger something, then it could be tied into a Arduino or simular to send the Power on IR command...or even better all in one....Does it already exist or is it something I am going to have to roll my own circuit/code? it would be an excuse to learn some new skills, but I'm lazy.

Can homekit compatible smart locks be used with Siri without an actual homekit setup?

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 08:26 AM PST

Sorry for the confusing title - currently I'm able to control Philips hue light bulbs through Siri and apple home even though I don't have a homepod or apple tv acting as a bridge if that makes sense.

Can smart locks like the August wifi smart lock be controlled in the same manner, by iphone/Siri without a full on homekit setup requiring a homepod or apple tv/ipad as a bridge/base?

Is there a switch (ideally z-wave) with an extra button?

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 05:53 AM PST

I'm working on setting up Home Assistant so it doesn't need to be z-wave, it would just be ideal as a repeater.

I've found a couple single gang double switches but that isn't quite what I'm looking for. My use case is that I have two floor lamps in the room. One is switched but the other outlet is always on. I was hoping that a smart switch plus a smart outlet would be a good way to get it switched (plus the other advantages like voice control and scheduling).

Does a switch with an extra control that's WiFi only exist? Or is there a better way to handle this?

Inovelli dimmer without neutral software config

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 05:44 AM PST

I've tried installing my Inovelli red series dimmer in a couple different single pole no neutral junction boxes with no luck. No LEDs turn on and the physical switch does not toggle the light. I see that in the instructions, you need to set the AC type to your particular install...in my case "no neutral". They also say this can be done via your hub or using the physical config button on the dimmer. How am I supposed to set the AC type though if the switch will not power on/respond at all?
