Excellent experience with Waxman (LeakSmart Water Valve) customer service.

    Posted: 01 May 2021 12:44 PM PDT

I've used a Waxman LeakSmart water valve (v1) to control my water main since sometime in 2015. About a week ago, I had water leak which resulted in the water valve being shut. When I resolved the leak, I was unable to open the valve using Hubitat, the zigbee coordinator I use, or even using the open/close buttons directly on the valve controller.

When I tried to open the valve (via Hubitat or the physical buttons), I could hear the motor grind horribly, so I decided to open it up just to see what it was going on. The LeakSmart has a controller that slides onto a motor assembly, which in turn is bolted on to the brass valve body. The motor assembly comes off with four screws.

The motor is a low-speed, high-torque, DC motor connected a circular nylon gear that rotates to move a nylon gear on the valve body to control the ball valve. Anyway, a single tooth had partly broken off on the circular nylon gear, so it would engage to close the valve, but not open it. And obviously this happened after 5+ years of use, so that's not bad for wear and tear.

I called LeakSmart tech support to see if I could purchase that little gear and what the part number was, The guy I spoke with (Keith) was super-professional; he knew what I was talking about in less than a minute. He said they'd be happy to ship me a entire new motor assembly for free.

And, less than a week later, I received it.

I'm just hugely impressed by the quality of Waxman's support. I sent Keith a note of thanks after receiving the package and in his reply he asked me to put a good review out there somewhere.

So this post is exactly that - first off, that valve worked flawlessly for 5+ years (maybe even 6 years). Either way, it was clearly out of warranty, so I think that Waxman's sending out a replacement part for free after all these years is incredible.

Anyone considering the purchase of a zigbee main water valve should include the Waxman in their consideration. My experience with them has been excellent!

Rehabbing a recently purchased home, how would you do your home automation “from scratch?”

    Posted: 01 May 2021 01:27 PM PDT

I just purchased a home that we will be doing a significant rehab on. It's an older home (1950s) that's, well, stuck in the 50s. No updated wiring/home automation of any kind/etc.

I want a very nice security system, home automation system, etc. My budget is around $5,000 but I would spend more. Security cameras would be limited to outside only.

With limited knowledge, where should I begin?

    Thanks.

    Recommended security camera setup?

    Posted: 01 May 2021 10:17 PM PDT

I've been looking around at home security systems, and it seems to boil down to Ubiquity or Eufy.

I already have an EdgeRouter X and Unifi Access Points, so am a bit familiar with Ubiquity.

I'd like to setup 2 outdoor cameras and 1 indoor camera for now, and have the ability to live stream them on my computer.

For the Unifi setup, it looks like I would need the UniFi Protect Network Video Recorder?

For the Eufy setup, I'm not sure how these would be connected.

Does anyone know of a segmented motion led strip where each segment lights up as you walk past it?

    Posted: 01 May 2021 09:22 PM PDT

I know one solution is to align several independent strips end to end, then try to share power over them. It could get very finicky very quickly for this more diy approach. I wonder if there exist a single strip where every meter or so there is a motion sensor that would tell the next x number of leds to turn on.

Just an idea for hallway illumination, or maybe a runway for an rc plane.

Anybody heard of WebBricks / WebBrick / WeBrick

    Posted: 01 May 2021 09:37 AM PDT

Hi I am looking to move into a home and the owners have mentioned that their heating and lighting is controlled via WebBricks / WebBrick / WeBrick. I've tried googling all of those but can't find a lot of information on this. I'm hoping someone here will have some more information on this. I'm looking to see how automated the system is and how compatible with other systems it is if I want to expand it. Thanks in advance

Bought a home with existing electric/motorized blinds. Motors seem to be Elero, same as the control systems. Installed around 2010. Any way to automate these?

    MyQ Garage Door Hub Disconnected

    Posted: 01 May 2021 02:52 PM PDT

I've had the MyQ Hub in my garage for almost 3 years with no issues and for some reason it just completely crapped out this week. It won't connect to my WiFi anymore. The signal is strong and I haven't changed anything with my security settings, access points or added any devices within the past month that would cause interference. Anyone have any ideas? I've factory reset it about 10 times and it absolutely will not connect to the network anymore.

    Highspeed scanner with printer function?

    Posted: 01 May 2021 02:01 PM PDT

    Hey there,

Since home office I started my journey for home automation, one part that I am still missing is going paperless. I already found a tool to help me look through all my scanned receipts and so on, now all I need is the hardware. For space reasons I´m looking for a fast scanner that can hold atleast a dozen pages, combined with printing (I need printed docs every now and then where I´m from).

I hope I´m in the right community for this question!

Would greatly appreicate ur experience! :)

Turn one light off when another is on?

    Posted: 01 May 2021 12:19 PM PDT

I am newly without a roommate and am expanding my smart bulbs into the rooms I now have access to. I have a combination of Hue and Tuya bulbs that I'm controlling with Alexa (no hub) and I'm wondering if there's a way with IFTTT or Alexa routines that I can set all my other lights to go out when I turn one on? It's a very small place and there is never a need to have more than one room lit at a time now that I'm alone, but I can't get used to remembering to turn off lights when I move around and it's annoying to have to say "Turn off bedroom" whenever I say "turn on living room" or "turn on office, etc." I'm not very good at this and mainly create routines from what other people who are smarter than I am come up with.

Can anyone point me in right direction?

Smart sensor to notify if a door is being opened

    Posted: 01 May 2021 03:08 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

So my friend stays in a rented apartment and she has had some bad experiences with her landlord who is a pervert. She's pretty suspicious the guy is entering her house while she is not there.

Is there some kind of sensor or gadget that can be used to notify her if the door is being opened after she leaves to work during the day?

Any leads or guidance towards something similar will be highly appreciated.

    Thank you
