How do I find devices which I can build my own controls for? Posted: 03 May 2021 05:34 PM PDT I am completely new to HA, and I am looking to replace a lot of the devices in my home (switches, thermostats, etc) but I don't want to be stuck using the proprietary apps for each device. I am shopping on Amazon for something which I can completely build my own interface for (for web, mobile, or both) but I don't know what to look for to know I'm picking the right stuff. How do I know which devices are open enough that I will be able to develop my own interfaces for them? [link] [comments]
Finally making the jump from Indigo to Home Assistant. Posted: 03 May 2021 10:33 PM PDT I have happily used Indigo (indigodomo.com) for almost 7 years.. its been really decent, very reliable, and admittedly poorly supported from an updates perspective.. It really kicked ass at lots of things.. and other things just really kicked my ass…. Almost everything in the app takes a ton of work to implement.. i hated being tied to a mac.. worried about whether i could upgrade.. I have not fully moved to indigo yet.. my home is in parallel at the moment with no home assistant automations yet.. but I can't wait… Anyone have any reason to stay? [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 May 2021 07:45 PM PDT I'm looking for a router for my new apartment, and i'm not sure if the eero 6 is worth it over the eero 5 or not. Its about a 1300 square foot apartment with 3 of us living in it, all using many smart home devices [link] [comments]
PoE Camera for a large property Posted: 03 May 2021 04:22 PM PDT I am looking for recommendations for a good PoE camera to help secure our house my fiancee and I live in. We do already have an AXIS system set up, but the person who set it up is incompetent as all hell and those cameras are not the greatest either (resolution wise). I was wondering if any had any recommendation for a camera system that would be straight forward to install, I was looking into a Swann or an Arlo as they seem to be good; wanted to ask reddit before I take the plunge [link] [comments]
Automating a 5 head ductless a/c and heat pump! Posted: 03 May 2021 07:54 PM PDT I'm looking for some kind of system that will automate these units. The units have to be all set to heat/ fan or ac together. This means if one wants ac, if another is set on heat (even if not heating) it will just blink. What I'm looking for is the best wifi module or IR transponder, mixed with some intelligent programming to work with these issues... Any suggestions?? Fwiw, I was told that each unit Could run heat or ac regardless of what the others were doing, so I'm already pretty bummed out that this isn't possible. [link] [comments]
Looking for cheap zigbee E27 RGB bulbs Posted: 03 May 2021 10:15 PM PDT I'm looking for E27 bulbs in RGB and zigbee. What bulbs do you use and which ones could you recommend? Thank you! [link] [comments]
Too many options - Which platform would best meet my needs? Posted: 03 May 2021 09:53 PM PDT I am trying to figure out which road to take on setting up home automation. I am way behind on current technologies and trying to educate myself but I am getting lost in all the options and having issues keeping all the new info straight. Wants - Devices - existing: Devices - not yet acquired: [link] [comments]
Needing Help -- Universal TV remote / automation for senior citizens Posted: 03 May 2021 05:28 PM PDT Hello, I'm looking for a product that will allow me to program a remote so that my in-laws can simply press one button to watch news, another button to watch something they've recorded on their Motorola DVR. Must be simple for them. I tried the Harmony Elite... but it couldn't manage the Magnavox DVR / Cable Box that Spectrum provides. It would help if the device could memorize the IR signals from the DVR's remote. My in-laws will use an iPad -- so that is one available path. Searching for this has been a challenge. Looking for programable remotes just doesn't do the trick. Thanks to anyone who can help point me in the right direction. Mark [link] [comments]
What hardware can accept an analog audio input and cast it to a Google Home group? Posted: 03 May 2021 02:05 PM PDT I know Bluetooth transmitters can do this, but I'm trying to cast to a Google Home group. I'm open to any ideas - perhaps an old phone or computer could somehow be used to accomplish this? Any ideas or experience doing this is appreciated! [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 May 2021 05:33 PM PDT I've got an unusual home automation problem I'm looking to solve. I want to get a robot vac suitable for a medium-sized shedding dog. Dog only goes on the tiled parts of the house. The unusual problem is that a member of my household believes wifi is harmful to their health. SO I need a device that either works entirely independently, on an alternative protocol (bluetooth, zigbee, ...), or a device which can handle wifi being off most of the time. One option I could work with is to have a wifi robo vac and use a home automation hub to only turn on the wifi and trigger it do do its thing when the person in question leaves the home. My only concern is whether devices might beep or complain or fail to reconnect smoothly if wifi is down for extended periods. These aren't the kind of things a salesperson knows or that is in online reviews ... so hoping someone with first-hand experience as an owner might be able to give me some tips. Please no advice about the person with EMF anxiety. That's a separate issue being addressed. [link] [comments]

Looking for your Serena Lutron Roller Shades Pictures/Experience Posted: 03 May 2021 05:44 AM PDT I recently installed a sliding glass patio door and am looking to add Serena by Lutron roller shades. I'd like to do both an outside mount with blackout fabric and an inside mount with either sheer or translucent fabric, but I'm having trouble deciding which. This will be installed in a bedroom facing the backyard. I have neighbors behind me so I'd like some sort of privacy, but I guess I could use the blackout shade for that. For those with sheer or translucent fabric shades, are you happy with what you chose? Would you choose differently if you did it again? Right now I'm leaning sheer since I can fall back on the blackout fabric for privacy. I'm just curious if you can see inside during the day. Thanks! [link] [comments]

Finding matching light bulb for recessed lighting Posted: 03 May 2021 12:55 PM PDT I'm trying to find a matching smart bulb for a recessed lighting fixture. I want to replace my Current bulb but can't seem to find any covered reflector smart bulbs. I tried this bulb from Amazon & it worked but was too short for the fixture. I've added a picture of the current bulb (left) and the Amazon one I purchased (right). Thanks for any help. [link] [comments]
Looking for outdoor system advice! Posted: 03 May 2021 03:37 PM PDT This isn't a post for me, it's for my dad. He gave me a laundry list of features he wants and I just can't find any reliable ones that fit the bill. The list: Wifi Battery/solar powered (does not want to run cables at all) Has an app Full tilt/swivel/pan Night vision No subscription required for the app Under $600 No need for a NAS or anything like that, possibly SD He really only needs like 2 cameras that move 360, 2 more that can be stationary or with just a tilt/pan Thanks in advance! Looking for a zwave or wifi fan/light combo controller Posted: 03 May 2021 01:06 PM PDT I replaced a light with a fan/light combo. I know to truly have control over both the light and the fan separately, I really need to have a traveler wire (14/3 instead of 14/2 wire). I cant easily pull new wire to the box, and I've seen remote controls that you can install inside the fan itself that I'm assuming uses RF to control it. Is there an easy solution (preferably Z-wave or wifi) that I can have control over the fan speed and light without pulling new wire? [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 May 2021 09:03 AM PDT I am looking for a smart plug to purchase. I currently have no home automation beyond two ecobee thermostats. I would like to program the smart plug with a set schedule, different for each day of the week. I would like it to keep this schedule even if wi-fi becomes unavailable. I would also like this schedule to be overridden by the ecobee thermostat's "occupied" state. (Of course this can not work if wi-fi is lost.) I don't even know enough to know what more information would be helpful. Thank you all for any help. [link] [comments]
Robot Vacuum - Boundaries for Persian Rugs Posted: 03 May 2021 12:32 PM PDT I'm looking to get a robot vacuum, but I'm hesitant because the last one I got started eating up the edges and tassels of my old persian rug. It was an old and cheap iHome vacuum, so I'm hoping that if I spend some more money this time I can avoid those issues. My first question is, what are your thoughts and recommendations for a robot vacuum for persian rugs? Is there a brand/model you recommend? Do the new models not have a problem with getting onto the rugs or eating the edges/tassels? Or should I avoid mixing persian rugs and vacuums altogether? My second question is what do you think about virtual vs magnetic boundaries for the vacuum? I was thinking that this would be a good way to stop the vacuum for eating the edges/tassels, and if I do want it to vacuum the rug I can lift it and place it on the rug while relying on the boundaries to prevent the vacuum from getting close to the edges. The virtual ones, where once the vacuum has mapped the house you can tell it places to avoid, seems better in theory but does it actually work well? The magnetic strips instead seem like they'll work better, but a little more of a hassle. Any recommendations for a robot vacuum that fits my persian rug needs will be welcome. [link] [comments] |
